Tighten Your
Turkey Neck
By Thomas C. Balshi, M.D.
{
“The aging face”…that’s how many of my articles seem to start. Not
today. Let’s talk about the neck. Our passion for the perfect face
often neglects the equally visible neck, a part of our anatomy that
bespeaks age just as much as our facial contours.
The neck is just as prone to wrinkling
and sagging as the skin on the face, and if
ignored, can be the giveaway to real age
for men and women alike.
For those who dream to tighten skin and
eliminate wrinkles without the fear of surgery,
technology is a steadfast friend. New
treatment modalities can improve the aging
neck using a technique that harnesses
the power of radio frequency without any
incisions. It’s called ThermiTight.
ThermiTight is a non-surgical, minimally
invasive alternative to surgery for
skin tightening. The treatment uses radio
frequency (a heat energy) to stimulate
collagen production beneath the skin,
which improves sagging and texture
and decreases wrinkling.
How Does ThermiTight
Work?
ThermiTight is formally
described as “thermistorcontrolled
subdermal skin
tightening,” which basically
means that controlled
heat is targeted
at the collagen layer of
the skin. To get under
the skin, the ThermiRF
system is used along with a
tiny probe called the SmartTip
probe, which is inserted just below the
surface. It functions like an injection but
without a needle. Don’t worry, before any
of this happens, the treated area will be
numbed with a small amount of local
anesthetic solution, ensuring patient
comfort through the duration of the
procedure.
The physician delivers the radio frequency
energy into the area through gentle
movements that heat the subdermal
tissue (collagen layer) to a specific internal
temperature. The physician uses the
Thermal Image Guidance to monitor external
temperatures and ensure the safety
of the skin, both inside and outside. Most
procedures last less than an hour and are
followed up with a gentle wrap.
Downtime following this procedure is
minimal, with most patients resuming
normal activities as early as the next day
without any discomfort or bruising.
Results can be noted immediately but
can take up to three months to see maximum
improvement. Generally, most patients
only need a single treatment, but if
warranted, a second treatment could
be administered a few months
after the first treatment.
These treatments are
not meant to replace
a traditional
face or neck lift
for cases where
more comprehensive
care is
required, but
if one is trying
to avoid surgery,
radio frequency
technology
can offer
marked esthetic
improvement, not
only to the neck, but
to other parts of
the body where excess
flab and wrinkling
diminish one’s
self-satisfaction.
