► dining ║ restaurant review THE SUNDY HOUSE Food Fit For Royalty By Diane Feen { The Sundy House is food for the Gods in both an aesthetic and culinary sense. 112 April 2017 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com Where else can you sit under luscious tropical plants and trees and eat food that is divinely ordained? Add that to twinkling lanterns and tiny lights and you have a meal (and an experience) that is part ethereal wonderment and part culinary genius. We have no doubt that The Sundy House is more precious than a coveted turn-of-thecentury gemstone as it was voted in 2016 by diners of OpenTable.com as a one of the “100 Best Outdoor Dining Restaurants in America.” We also realize that many people don’t know that dinner is served at this historic Victorian masterpiece every Tuesday to Sunday starting at 6pm. “People don’t understand that we serve dinner during the week. They know about our brunch, but many people don’t realize that you can dine in a quiet beautiful restaurant right off the avenue,” said Travis Culver, Executive Chef at the Sundy House. Culver is right. Dining at The Sundy House is akin to being on a deserted island without a life boat (that you wouldn’t want even if you had one). The outstanding tangible is that they are just minutes from the Avenue, yet millions of ethereal miles from civilization. You can almost throw a stone from Atlantic Avenue and Swinton and hit a Royal Poinciana tree on the premises of this majestic space. There is one difference between this historic landmark and most restaurants with a pretty face – the food is equally as spectacular as the surroundings. Yes, we expected the food to be good and yes we thought they would have a well storied chef. But the menu is far superior to most; and the marinades, fish dishes, vegetables and salads are

some of the best you will find in the realm of five-star restaurants. But the best part is that the prices are on par with most restaurants of this ilk. Their Fig Salad is one of the best of breed with baby arugula that is startlingly fresh, spiced walnuts, figs, Manchego cheese and serrano ham in a sweet sherry vinaigrette. From this jumping off point there was no turning back. Dish after dish came out of the kitchen with as much fanfare as a Victoria Secret supermodel. The Roasted Black Cod was a winner in a miso glaze with caramelized bok choy and forbidden black rice. The Seared Grouper was served in an orange thyme butter sauce with butternut squash puree and haricot verts (French for green beans). Also noteworthy is the Seared Sea Scallops with celery root puree and roasted mushrooms in a Madeira jus. If you’re cravings are more on a meatier pathway we suggest the Seared Duck Breast roasted in salsify with cipollini onions in a morello cherry sauce. The dishes at the Sundy House are so good it’s hard not to want to eat the paper they are printed on. Executive Chef Culver has been holding court here for nine years and his passion for excellence and flavor flapping goodness is beyond mere verbal description. One example of creative wizardry that would bring Julia Child to tears is the Maple Bacon Brussels Sprouts. But we digress. The Braised Pork Shank is also superb - made with creamy polenta and mirepoix (diced) vegetables in a flavor-filled wine sauce. The fish – which is often sourced locally – was a favorite of local Delray fundraiser Paul Ellenbogen. “The Seared Grouper was so thick and tender – it was an explosive combination of flavors. I feel like I’ve been beamed away by a starship transporter and dropped into a tropical paradise.” He is right. The Sundy House is a tropical paradise. With over 5000 plants derived from 500 foliage types from all over the world, this outdoor setting has everything one needs to dream big while being seduced by flavors and texture of unlimited delight. Combine that with Savannah-style gazebos, serene waterfalls, benches and streams and you have an evening to remember forever. While the dinner is nothing short of spectacular, their Sunday Brunch is world class. Situated on the historic grounds with the sparkling goodness of Mother Nature’s sidekick, the Sundy House Sunday Brunch was voted by diners of Open Table in 2016 as a top 100 best brunch spots in the country (there were only three in Florida). Their whirlwind of food stations range from a carving station, pasta station, seafood bar (with everything imaginable), charcuterie and salad bar, omelet station, French toast, waffles, side dishes and a veritable sweet tooth fantasy station. Also included in this feast-of-the-fortunate are unlimited Mimosas and Bloody Marys. Saturday Brunch is a bit tamer with an a la carte menu that includes omelets with gourmet ingredients, avocado toast, eggs Benedict, Cobb salad, lobster tacos, beer batter fish and chips and other dishes. If you’re looking for an idyllic wedding location The Sundy House is the perfect venue. The tranquil one-acre botanical garden, guest rooms, award-winning restaurant, fresh water streams, charming gazebos and mood altering lighting is as romantic as a celeb-fueled private island. That is precisely the reason The Sundy House hosts over 75 weddings a year. The Sundy House was built in 1902 and is known for its historic grandiosity and original owner – the first Mayor of Delray Beach, John Sundy. The beautifully restored Sundy House could calm an energizer bunny and ignite romance among a semblance of strangers, but its natural order is truly a great testament to its current owners and historical heritage. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the most divine restaurants to grace our city limits. To dine at Sundy House is to dine among kings. It’s truly a memorable experience. Come along for the ride. THE SUNDY HOUSE 106 S.
