HOUSE OF THE MONTH 1. 1. Garden Quest Maggie Alderson hunts down the best hiding places for Easter eggs Like many great British annual traditions, we imported the Easter Bunny from America. That great nation of marketing geniuses has long done a fine trade in converting slightly creepy figures of ancient European folklore into adorable cuddly characters perfect for flogging product while cheering everyone up. Win win. It was in this spirt that Santa Claus as we know and love him – jolly, tubby, red of cheek – was invented by Coca-Cola in the 1930s. Earlier Christmas present deliverers Saint Nicholas, the Nordic god Wotan and Britain’s original Father Christmas, weren’t nearly so affable. The Easter Bunny in its original European incarnation of an egg-hiding mammal fertility symbol was actually a hare, an animal perfect for conveying the idea of spring’s fecundity, because lady hares can actually get pregnant again while they are still carrying a litter. It’s an impressive feat of breeding (if a nightmarish prospect…), but bunnies won, because they’re cuter and have fluffy tails and we’ve all cuddled one. There’s a reason Beatrix Potter wrote Peter Rabbit rather than Harold Hare. The Easter Hare is also a less attractive prospect to the modern child, because on his arrival in America with 18th century German immigrants to Pennsylvania, he hid real eggs, albeit painted ones. As the fluffy egg-concealing white rabbit took on across the United States the eggs became chocolate, which required attractive baskets to be collected in and the Easter Egg Hunt as we now know it had arrived. And what a lovely thing it is, to watch over-excited children – some of them nearly of university age, in my experience – running around a garden searching for tiny foilcoloured treats, with a larger chocolate rabbit or chicken the ultimate prize. Also fun for parents, is the concealing of the eggs, while a grandparent distracts the small ones inside – nearly as thrilling as tiptoeing in with a Christmas stocking. The key thing is to have the right garden to do it in, with lots of different areas for hiding and hunting. 1. White Ladyes Where?
