We are delighted to present our 2017 edition
of “Welcome to Shelby County,”
your guide to our little slice of East
Texas heaven.
On behalf of The Light and Champion family,
we hope you will find this magazine, and the online
version at www.lightandchampion.com, a
handy resource over the next 12 months.
We’ve aimed to mix the county’s history with
useful information about the county’s communities,
businesses, government entities and elected
officials, recreational offerings and more.
It is interesting to ponder what Shelby County’s
namesake, Revolutionary War veteran Isaac
Shelby, might think of the county some 180 year
later. Agriculture, oil and natural gas make up a
big part of the economy.
Would Mr. Shelby enter the seed-spitting contest
during the WHAT-A-Melon Festival, or test
his skills at the Clucking contest during the East
Texas Poultry Festival? Which of the county’s five
public high schools would he root for?
To be sure, much has changed here since 1837.
What hasn’t changed is the kindness, work ethic,
and faith of its residents.
We’ve included a directory on this page of businesses
that advertised in this section. We hope you
will take time to check out their ads as, without
their support, we could not produce this section.

Shelby County
Shelby County is the 100th largest of the
254 counties in Texas; with an estimated
population of 22,658 in 1991 and more than
26,019 according to the 2012 Census.
The county seat is Center and the
next-largest city is Timpson. Shelby County
is a rural county, which lies within the Deep
East Texas JTPA service delivery area and
the Deep East Texas Quality Workforce
Planning Region, administered by the Deep
East QWFPR.
Within state and federal elected representation,
Shelby County falls within the 1st U.S
Congressional District, the 3rd Texas Senate
District and the 9th Texas House District.
The county consists of 795.58 square
miles with a 2010 population density of 32.0
residents per square mile. The average
density in Texas is 96.3 persons per square
mile. The average annual total precipitation
is about 53.07 inches. Of this, about 34.2
inches, or 64 percent, usually falls in March
through October.

THE FACTS ABOUT SHELBY COUNTY
within this period. The heaviest 1-day rainfall
during the period of record was 9.66 inches
at Center on Nov. 23, 1940. Thunderstorms
occur on about 56 days each year, and most
occur between April and August.
The infrastructure in Shelby County continues
to have new growth with the addition
of new businesses in each city and with the
growth of current businesses.
The main industries in the area continue
to be involved with poultry, lumber and oil
and gas.

SHELBY COUNTY
COURTHOUSE
Located on the historic Center
square the courthouse was constructed
by J.J.E., Gibson, architect and
builder, who designed the courthouse
to resemble an Irish castle. The style
is, in part, “Romanesque Revival.” Gibson
completed the construction of the
courthouse in 1885.

HISTORICAL MARKERS AND SITES
SHELBY COUNTY
COURTHOUSE GROUNDS
Shelby County was part of the neutral
ground from 1803 to 1819 and was
settled by Anglo-Americans between
1824 and 1836. In 1833, a District of
the Municipality of Nacogdoches,
Tenehaw, became the Municipality of
Tenehaw in 1835, with Nashville as the
county seat. The name was changed to
Shelby in 1836 in honor of Isaac Shelby
(1750-1826), a gallant officer in the Continental
Army Revolutionary War. The
county was created on March 17, 1836,
and was organized with Shelbyville as
county seat in 1837. Center became the
county seat of Shelby County in 1866.
In 2000, a historical marker was placed
on the courthouse grounds in memory
of J.J.E. Gibson, the Irish architect and
builder of the Shelby County Courthouse.
His portrait and other Gibson
artifacts are in the Gibson Room of the
historic courthouse.
EVA LANE TAYLOR HOME
The Eva Lane Taylor home is located
at 212 Houston Street; 1 block
south of Square on Hwy 7 West; then
left on Houston Street.
CONFEDERATE STATES
OF AMERICA – TEXAS MUSTER
Held on the spot of the historical
marker, April 4, 1964, to honor Texans
who made up the greater part of
forces fighting in the Civil War Red
River Campaign of 1864-1865, that
prevented a federal invasion of Texas.
Descendants answering to roll call for
soldiers of 100 years ago included 37
sons and daughters of those fighters.
Grandchildren, great-grandchildren
and other kinsmen represented such
leaders as the Trans-Mississippi Commander
General E. Kirby Smith, and
Generals, A.P. Bagby, John R. Baylor,
August Buchel, X.B. DeBray, Tom
Green, Walter P. Lane, Henry E. Mc-
Culloch, James Major, Horace Randal,
William R. Scurry, W.W. Steele, John
G. Walker, Thomas Waul, and Colonels
Henry Gray, Philip N. Luckett and
P.C. Woods.
Friends and descendants of the
Valverde Battery restored a century-old
gun and brought it from Freestone
County to ride in an 8 mile long
parade that moved 36 miles northeastward
from here to the Mansfield Battleground.
There the cannon shook
the earth as it did April 9, 1864, and
the assemblage unveiled the first outof-state
marker of the Texas Civil War
Centennial, commemorating the Battle
of Mansfield. Located on the south side
of the square in Center 1864-1964.
TRUITT CEMETERY
James Truitt (1795-1870) and his
wife Sarah Hall Truitt (1796-1848),
left North Carolina for Texas in 1838,
settling near this site in 1840. Truitt
was a congressman in the Republic
of Texas, 1843-45; a representative,
1846-48; and served four terms as
a senator in the Texas state legislature.
The Truitts had five sons and
five daughters. Two sons fought in
the Regulator-Moderator War, three
in the Mexican War, five in the Civil
War. Descendants continue to be
prominent in Texas history. Founded
at the death of Sarah Hall Truitt, several
generations rest in this cemetery.
The cemetery is located 11 miles East
of Center on Highway 7; then 2 miles
West on county road 3173.
SARDIS SCHOOL
AND MILTON IRISH
The school is located on Hwy 414
off 87 South approximately 1.5-2 miles
on left. Hwy 138 to split in road, go
straight 2 miles down FM2974 (Upper
Arcadia Rd). Cemetery is on the right
next to the church.
HISTORICAL
SHELBY COUNTY JAIL
The Historic Shelby County Jail
was designed and built in 1884 by Irish
born architect John Joseph Emmett
Gibson. It was one of the first of two
brick buildings built in Center, possibly
even in Shelby County. It is the
epitome of an 1880’s small-town Texas
county jail. It compliments the Historic
Shelby County Courthouse, also design
and built by J.J.E. Gibson. It is now
the home of the Shelby County Chamber
of Commerce. The jail sits on the
grounds of the historic Shelby County
Courthouse on the historic downtown
square.
B.F. MORRIS
AND TOWN OF JOAQUIN
Alabama born Benjamin Franklin
Morris (1827-1900) came to Texas
in 1838 and settled in the area that
became the pioneer village of Sarat.
A prosperous farmer and rancher, he
gave right of way through 500 acres of
his land to the Houston, East and West
Texas Railroad in 1884. He also provided
a 100 acre town site to be named
for his grandson Joaquin (1878-1898).
Morris, a Confederate veteran, requested
that a depot be built in Joaquin
and that passenger trains stop daily.
Later, Morris donated a building site
for the First Baptist Church of Joaquin.
Joaquin is located over the river from
Louisiana on U.S. Hwy. 84.
TOWN SITE OF SPIVEY
The town site of Spivey was
founded by Civil War veteran James
Jackson Spivey. Brothers Elisha P.
and Georve W. Spivey lived nearby.
Houston East and West Texas Railroad
crossed the founder’s land, and Spivey
Station was founded in 1886.
During the late 1880’s, Hick’s
Lumber Mill and workers’ houses
were erected. A U.S. Post Office was
established in 1891, and Isaac W.
Spivey was its postmaster. Friendship
Baptist Church was organized during
the 1890’s and James M. Spivey was
pastor. After 1900, the town gradually
moved over to Paxton Switch. Friendship
Cemetery, with 33 graves, marks
the old site. The town site of Spivey
is located 1.5 miles east of Paxton on
Hwy. 84 between Tenaha and Joaquin.
INTERNATIONAL
BOUNDARY MARKER
The only marker of international
boundary known to exist within the

Continental United States is located
west of Joaquin, Texas. The marker is
located on the Texas-Louisiana border
about fifty yards north of Texas Farm
Road 31. The site was once the boundary
between the United States and the
Republic of Texas in 1840. Vandalism
has been a ongoing issue with this historic
site.
ELDER BRITTAIN
& ROSANNA WRIGHT
North Carolina native William
Brittain (1774-1850) became a
preacher in his home state at the age
of 25. In 1802 he married Rosanna
(Wright) (1784-1856), the daughter
of Revolutionary War veteran John
Wright, III. Inspired by missionary
possibilities in the frontier regions
to the west, William and Rosanna left
North Carolina in 1824. After living
in Alabama and Arkansas, they migrated
to the Republic of Texas in
1837 and constructed a log cabin at
this site. One room of the structure
served as a classroom and church
sanctuary for the pioneer settlers of
the Sabine River steamboat port of
Hamilton, later known as East Hamilton.
A pioneer leader of the Baptist
faith in East Texas, Elder Brittain was
instrumental in the formation of several
Shelby County congregations,
including the Hamilton Church in
1846. Originally aligned with the
Predestinarian movement of Daniel
Parker, he later joined Missionary
Baptists of the Sabine Association
and served as moderator of the organization
in 1847.
The marker is located in Brittain
Cemetery in East Hamilton. 7 miles
East of Patroon on FM 2261, then left
on County Road 126, then right on
County Road 106.
FIRST COUNTY SEAT
OF SHELBY COUNTY
Shelbyville, once known as Nashville,
was the first county seat of government
for the District of Tenaha, or
Shelby County. The first courthouse
stood on this site. The settlement
began before 1825. It became headquarters
for the “Regulator-Moderator
War.” Troops were raised here to
fight the Indians for the Texas Army,
and Confederate forces were organized
here. The marker is located at
the intersection of FM 417 and Hwy
87 in Shelbyville.
MOSES FISK ROBERTS
Moses Fisk Roberts was a highly
regarded public servant and farmer
Shelby County
of Shelby County. His ever-present
pack of fox hounds earned him the
nickname “Dog” Roberts. Born in
Tennessee, he moved to Texas in
1836 and lost his right eye while
serving as a soldier in the Texas
Militia. He served in the Congress
of the Republic (1839-42) and Texas
State Legislature (1853-54, 1857-58).
He was also Justice of the Peace and
County Judge. His first wife was
Amanda Grant, and his second wife
was Nancy Murray. The marker is
located in the Shelbyville Cemetery.
SIDNEY O. PENNINGTON
Born in 1809 in Kentucky, Pennington
came to Texas in 1834 and
participated in the capture of San Antonio
if 1835. In 1836 he fought at San
Jacinto and signed the Texas Declaration
of Independence. He died in
Shelby County in 1838. The marker
is located in Shelbyville Cemetery.
FIRST METHODIST CHURCH
OF SHELBYVILLE
The First Methodist Church of
Shelbyville with its New England
style steeple claims that its organization
as a congregation took place
in the year 1825. Tradition holds
that the first church service held by
Brother James English, a local Methodist
preacher who settled in Shelby
County that same year.
The church building was destroyed
by a storm but was rebuilt
in 1897. The men of the church cut
cypress trees in the Sabine River bottoms
and hauled them to the present
churchyard in mule drawn wagons.
The roof and steeple were braced
with enough timber, it was said, to
build a house. The floor was laid of
hand-hewn planks from ash, hickory,
maple, oak, persimmon, sassafras,
and walnut timbers. The finial on the
steeple was made from the end of a
large timber, which extends downward
into the steeple some eight to
ten feet. The pews are hand made
by architect, Mr. J.M. Pigg. The colorful
Victorian glass windows are in
vibrant shades of green and amber.
Entering the church there is a
room dedicated to the history of
the church. There are photographs
of former pastors who served the
church and the community, many interesting
artifacts and objects of the
church’s history.
SHELBY COUNTY
REGULATOR-MODERATOR
WAR
In Shelby County, an unorganized
feud known as the Regulator-Moderator
War was initially started because a
slave was purchased with a fraudulent
land certificate.The marker is located
1/2 mile northwest of Shelbyville on
Highway 87.
FIRST BATTLE
The Regulators, whose leaders
were Charles W. Jackson, Charles
W. Moorman, and Wyatt Norman,
claimed their purpose was to suppress
crime. The Moderators were
led by Edward Merchant and John
M. Bradley. The marker is located
2 miles northwest of Shelbyville on
Highway 87.
LAST BATTLE
The last battle of the Regulator-Moderator
War was held on
August 14, 1844. There was heavy
sacrifice of life and property before
General James Smith and Texas
troops restored order. The marker is
located 1 mile south of Shelbyville on
Highway 87.
ROBERTS’ HILL
Roberts’ Hill is a home-site of Col.
Oran Milo Roberts, “Old Alcalde.” He
rose from district attorney to chief Justice
Texas Supreme Court; President
Texas Secession Convention; Col.
Confederate Infantry Regiment; U.S.
Senator; Governor of Texas; author,
First President Texas Historical Association;
law professor University of
Texas. The marker is located 6 miles
south on Hwy 147 from intersection of
Hwy 87 and Hwy 147.
THE BICKHAM HOUSE
The Bickham house is located
where originally, the J.M. Crawford
Home was built. Finished in 1850,
the J.M Crawford Home was razed
by fire in 1885. The Bickham House
was built by Crawford’s stepson,
Frederick Lee Bickham (1866-1907),
who was a prominent landowner and
rancher from 1885 to 1888. He and his
wife, Nevada Levonia Moon, brought
up their children and Bickham’s stepsisters
and stepbrothers at their residence.
Timber (cedar, cypress and
heart pine) for the house was cut on
the property. In 1972, N.O. Thomas,
Jr. bought, restored and renamed the
house “Welcome Hall.” In 1973, Welcome
Hall was recorded as a Texas
Historic Landmark. The house is located
2 miles East on FM 2694 from
Shelbyville, visible from roadway only.
MYRICK’S FERRY LOG HOME
The log home is located 14
miles East of Shelbyville. Take FM
2694 then right on FM 3172, then
left on Forest Road 100 to Stillwater
Marina. Visible from roadway.
WILLIAM HARRISON WALL
HOMESTEAD
William Harrison Wall founded
Tenaha by opening a store in 1885
with a relative, who helped Houston
East and West Texas Railroads.
In 1886, he and his wife, Nancy,
built their home, a smaller copy
of his old home in North Carolina.
The family was sociable, and with
the first piano in town, they had a
“preacher’s room” for circuit riders.
A son and friends originated a
noted drill cadence “Tenaha, Timpson,
Bobo and Blair.” W.H. Wall,
II ran a drugstore in Tenaha for
50 years. Three generations have
occupied the house, which was remodeled
in 1976. Located 1 block
south of intersection of Loop 157
and Hwy 59 in Tenaha. The marker
has been removed from the house.
TIMPSON – TOWN SQUARE
In 1884, Houston businessman
Paul Bremond (1810-1885) and
other investors began planning for
a new railroad to connect Houston
and Shreveport, Louisiana. Surveys
soon began along the proposed
route, and in 1885 the town of Timpson
was founded, named for Paul C.
Timpson, the railroad official who
laid out the town. The Houston East
and West Texas Railroad, a narrow
gauge system, was soon a reality
and the first passenger train arrived
in the new town on August 1, 1885.
The first businesses in the new
town were two stores, separated by
a pine thicket which would later be
cleared for use as the town square.
Within a year, the population had
grown to 1000.
Within the first year of Timpson’s
founding, a school was
started and churches and fraternal
organizations were organized.
Many businesses were established,
including a newspaper; grocery,
drug and other retail stores; an
ice company; factories; and banks.
The town became an important resource
of East Texas lumber and
cotton, especially since Timpson
had an established rail center. Railroads
continued their important
role in Timpson until the 1940’s,
when development of state roads
and highways decreased the use of
rail shipments. Timpson is located
on Highway 84.

PARADE – This nighttime
parade takes place in
downtown Center each

HISTORIC SHELBY
COUNTY COURTHOUSE
– Built in 1885 by J. J. E.
Gibson, the Historic Shelby
County Courthouse is on the
National Register of Historic
Places in Texas. This
courthouse is last remaining
Irish castle style courthouse
in the United States. Tours
are offered Monday through
Friday from 10 a.m. to 12
p.m. and 1 p.m. to 2p.m.

WHAT-A-MELON
FESTIVAL – The WHAT-A-
Melon Festival held on the
Historic Downtown Center
Square each July. The event
features a pet show, Miss
WHAT-A-Melon Pageant,

carnival rides, arts and
crafts, food vendors and live
entertainment. The Center
Rotary Club hosts this event.

BOOTH MEMORIAL
LIBRARY – The library
houses over 13,000 volumes
and offers an electronic
library, wireless internet
connection, and computer
access. Staff hosts various
reading programs and a
furnished meeting room
is available. The public is
welcome to visit the library
during their business hours,
Tuesday through Friday
from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and
Saturday from 9 a.m. to

EAST TEXAS POULTRY
FESTIVAL – Celebrating
the leading industry in
Shelby County, the East
Texas Poultry Festival is
currently in its 40th year.
Held annually in October,
the festival events include a
Chicken Clucking Contest,
East Texas Poultry Festival
Pageant, arts and crafts, live
entertainment, food vendors,
a photography and quilt
show, creative arts, poultry
judging and auction, chicken
cooking contest, and more.
The East Texas Poultry
Festival is hosted by the
Shelby County Chamber of
Commerce.
PRINCESS BALL – A
local favorite, the Princess
Ball is annually held at the
John D. Windham Civic
Center and features a night
of glamor, dancing, star
status and fun for little
girls escorted by their
dads. A buffet and photo
opportunities lie just past the
red carpet of this event. The
ball is hosted by the Shelby
County Children’s Advocacy
Center each February.

SHERIFF’S POSSE PRCA
RODEO – This rodeo takes
place each year in June and
features bronco and bull
riding, calf roping, barrel
racing, live entertainment
and more. Gates open
nightly at 7:30 p.m. and

in advance or at the gate.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s
Posse PRCA Rodeo is held
at the Shelby County Rodeo
Arena on Highway 7 East
and sponsored by Wright
Chrysler Dodge Jeep.
TIMPSON FRONTIER
DAYS – Hosted in July in
downtown Timpson, the
frontier days festival events
include live demonstrations,
folklore, entertainment,
arts and crafts, a parade,
pageant, rides, laser light
show and more. Admission
to Timpson Frontier Days is
free.

MUSEUM - The Museum
Building, located at 230
Pecan Street in Center, is
the former Weaver-Oates
house, circa 1900. There

expansion, provides fun and

CELEBRATION – The
celebration takes place in
Tenaha at Tiger Football

industry is the
largest agricultural
business in
Shelby County, bringing in
approximately $242,000,000
annually. Tyson Foods and
Pilgrim’s Pride are the two
poultry companies present
in Shelby County. Tyson
employs 1,300 residents in
its processing plants and
feed mill.
Tyson has 64 contract
growers with 295 houses in
the county alone. The Tyson
processing plant in Center
processes 1.25 to 1.3 million
birds per week.
Cattle are the second

JOAQUIN
B. F. Morris
and Town of Joaquin
Alabama-born Benjamin
Franklin Morris (1827-1900)
came to Texas in 1838 and
settled in the area that became
the pioneer village of
Sarat. A prosperous farmer
and rancher, he gave right
of way through 500 acres of
his land to the Houston, East
and West Texas Railroad in
1884. He also provided a 100-
acre townsite to be named for
his grandson Joaquin (1878-
1898). Later, Morris donated
a building site for the First
Baptist Church of Joaquin.
Location: In Joaquin on
U.S. Hwy. 84.
Townsite of Spivey
The townsite of Spivey was
founded by Civil War veteran
James Jackson Spivey. Brothers
Elisha P. and George W.
Spivey lived nearby. Houston
East and West Texas Railroad
crossed the founder’s
land, and Spivey Station was
founded in 1886.
During the late 1880s,
Hick’s Lumber Mill and workers’
houses were erected. A
U.S. Post Office was established
in 1891, and Isaac W.
Spivey was its postmaster.
Friendship Baptist Church
was organized during the
1890s and James M. Spivey
was pastor. After 1900, the
town gradually moved over
to Paxton Switch. Friendship
Cemetery, with 33 graves,
marks the old site.
Location: 1.5 miles east of
Paxton on Hwy. 84 between
Tenaha and Joaquin.
Fellowship Baptist
Church
One of the oldest Baptist
churches in Texas, Fellowship
Baptist Church was
founded by settlers who
came by ferry across the Sabine
River as early as 1818. It
is recorded that this church
ministered to spiritual needs
in the Republic of Texas Era.
The original log building had
split log benches and was
heated by an eight-foot fireplace
with a mud chimney.
The windows, without glass,
had shutters on wooden
hinges.

SHELBYVILLE
First County Seat
of Shelby County
Shelbyville, once known as
Nashville, was the first county
seat of government for the
District of Tenaha, or Shelby
County. The first courthouse
stood on this site. The settlement
began before 1825. It
became headquarters for the
“Regulator-Moderator War.”
Location: Marker is located
at the intersection of FM 417
and Hwy 87 in Shelbyville.
Moses Fisk Roberts
Moses Fisk Roberts was a
highly regarded public servant
and farmer of Shelby
County. His ever-present pack
of foxhounds earned him the
nickname “Dog” Roberts.
Born in Tennessee, he moved
to Texas in 1836 and lost his
right eye while serving as a
soldier in the Texas Militia.
He served in the Congress
of the Republic (1839-42) and
Texas State Legislature (1853-
54, 1857-58). He was also Justice
of the Peace and County
Judge.
His first wife was Amanda
Grant, and his second wife
was Nancy Murray.
Location: Marker is located
in the Shelbyville Cemetery.
Shelby County Regulator-Moderator
War
In Shelby County, an unorganized
feud known as the
County. He surveyed
and marked the boundary
line between Shelby
and Panola Counties
(a distance of 43-1/2
miles).

Methodist Church
This Methodist church
was one of the first institutions
established in Tenaha
after its founding in 1886.
The congregation was established
by Methodists from
the Woods Post Office and
Ramah communities who had
come to help develop a railhead
town for the Houston
East and West Texas Railroad.
The members constructed
their first sanctuary in 1890
during the pastorate of the
Reverend W.L. Pate of the
Woods circuit.

founded Tenaha by opening a
store in 1885 with a relative,
who helped Houston East
and West Texas Railroads.
In 1886, he and his wife,
Nancy, built their home, a
smaller copy of his old home
in North Carolina. The family
was sociable, and with the
first piano in town, they had a
“preacher’s room” for circuit
riders.
A son and friends originated
a noted drill cadence
“Tenaha, Timpson, Bobo
and Blair.” W. H. Wall II ran
a drugstore in Tenaha for
50 years. Three generations
have occupied the house,
which was remodeled in
1976.

TIMPSON
Town Square
In 1884, Houston businessman
Paul Bremond (1810-1885)
and other investors began planning
for a new railroad to connect
Houston and Shreveport,
Louisiana. Surveys soon began
along the proposed route, and in
1885 the town of Timpson was
founded, named for Paul C. Timpson,
the railroad official who laid
out the town. The Houston East
and West Texas Railroad was
soon a reality and the first passenger
train arrived in the new town
on August 1, 1885.
The first businesses in the
new town were two stores, separated
by a pine thicket, which
would later be cleared for use as
the town square. Within a year,
the population had grown to 1000.
Railroads continued their important
role in Timpson until the
1940s, when development of state
roads and highways decreased
the use of rail shipments.

Timpson.
First Baptist Church
of Timpson
Area Baptists had established
a church at Buena Vista when
the railroad bypassed that community
and founded Timpson
in 1885. The Houston East and
West Texas Railroad dedicated
church sites for the new town in
1886, and the Baptists were given
this land. Twenty members chartered
First Baptist that year, with
the Rev. W. F. Alford as pastor.
Many families moved from
Buena Vista to the new town, including
that of Dr. J. B. Bussey,
trustee of First Baptist. M.D.
Blankenship and his family built
a log house in Timpson and became
leaders in the community
and First Baptist Church.
By 1939 the church listed 485
members. Musical traditions
begun during the ’30s, including
special cantatas at Christmas and
Easter, have continued through
the years.

Since 1960, Center Fixture Operations
has played on the team of the number
one greeting card company in the world,
Hallmark Cards, Inc. CFO manufactures
and assembles many of the fixture
displays that are seen in your local Walmart,
Walgreen’s, CVS, Brookshire,
Kroger and of course, the Hallmark
Gold Crown stores.
Currently CFO sits on 14 acres, operates
under 170,000 sq ft and produces
between $10-$20M in fixture shipments
per year, with less than 70 fulltime employees.

Shelby County has many
old cemeteries of historic significance,
some of which have
been designated by the Texas
Historic Commission as Texas
Historic Cemeteries. Some of
the Shelby County Texas Historic
Cemeteries dedicated are
Truitt, Strong, Tennessee, Shady
Grove, Patroon, Price, Sample,
King-Oates, Ramah, Buena Vista,
Lone Cedar, McWilliams, Sholar,
Corinth, John Buckley, Duncan,
John May, Bounds-Estes, Pleasant
Hill, Eddins-Anderson, Wimberly,
Brookland and Mull.
There are more cemeteries
in Shelby County, which meet
the qualifications for being designatied
as historic. All that is
needed is for a descendant or
descendants to do the necessary
research and application to the
Texas Historical Commission to
secure the historic designation
for their family’s cemetery.

Shelby County History
Important notes in county history
• Shelby County, one of the
original counties of Texas was
organized in 1837. It was named
for Isaac Shelby, a Revolutionary
soldier from Kentucky.
• Shelbyville, created in 1824,
was once called Nashville. Its
name was changed to Shelbyville
when it became the county seat.
• Center, the area once called
White Cottage, later became the
county seat in 1866.
• J.J.E. Gibson, a native of
Ireland, built the Shelby County
Courthouse in 1883-85.
• The courthouse is today one
of the five oldest courthouses in
Texas of the original design.
• The Shelby County courthouse
is the only
Irish castle style
courthouse remaining
in the United
States.
• Two Shelby
County residents,
Sydney O. Pennington
and William
Crawford, were
signers of the Texas
Declaration of Independence.
Pennington is buried
in Shelbyville. Crawford was a
Methodist preacher, and is said to
have held the first service in the
Methodist Church at Shelbyville.

• The first bottling works for
soda water in Texas was in Timpson.
• R.L. “Bob” Parker was considered
the “Father of Center”
because he upheld the state’s
ruling about locating county seats
and moved the records from Shelbyville
to Center.
• Coal was mined not far from
the Center square in 1910.
• Tobacco was once grown as
a crop in Shelby County.
• John Moosberg initiated the
broiler industry in Shelby County.
• Oil and gas exploration returned
to Shelby County with discovery
of the Haynesville Shale.

Center’s economy
is a history
of cycles and
transitions. The
first major industry was
cotton, which gave way
to timber, which evolved
into poultry, and then
manufacturing was introduced.
Until recently,
the local economy was
primarily agriculture
based. A transition
began in 2007 with the
introduction of activity
from the energy industry.

In 2011, Tyson Foods
completed a multi-million
dollar expansion of
their Center processing
plant. This project created
an additional 200
jobs, bringing their total
employment to 1,400.
In 2014, Tyson planned
yet another large investment
for capital
maintenance projects.
The City was able to
help Portacool break
ground on a new global
headquarters and make
major plant equipment
purchases. This project
means that Portacool
is staying in Center
and they will create
additional jobs. Nacogdoches
Medical saw
a need in our market
and built a state-of-theart
ER facility. Center
Motors relocated from
the downtown square to
Hurst Street in a heavy
commercial corridor. In
some form, the City of
Center and the CEDC
assisted each of these
businesses to close the
deal.
Center’s economic
future looks bright. The
City and EDC continue
to seek investors for
commercial, residential,
and industrial development.
The return of the
energy industry activity
will create a wealth of
opportunity for entrepreneurs
and existing businesses.
The Loop 500
extension, completed
in 2015, will open hundreds
of acres for new
development and relieve
traffic congestion inside
the City.
This is an exciting
time to be a part of Center’s
future and we are
always seeking those
wanting to partner in
this developing story.

Economic Development
Center has only
plane factory in
entire state (1935)
Center boasts the only
factory for building of airplanes
in the State of Texas.
The States Aircraft Corporation
of which J.B. Sanders is
president builds the States
monoplane and does every
variety of airplane repair
work.
Mr. Sanders, becoming
airminded, bought a Travelair
monocoupe in 1933. It
was piloted to Center from
Chicago by “Buddy” Downs
and landed in a muddy field.
Upon trying to take off the
muddy condition of the field
caused the plane to take a
nose dive and sustain considerable
damage.
Downs remained in Center
until it was repaired. He
mentioned to Mr. Sanders
the fact that a fried, Adam
Bialorski, was coming to
Texas to establish a repair
plant for airplanes. Sanders
suggested Center as a location.
Center was chosen and
thus was born the States
Aircraft Corporation. It now
has a Government approved
repair department and has
built several planes for commercial
use.

Center Independent School
District (CISD) is a K-12 public
education school system located
in the heart of the Piney Woods
of East Texas. Positioned at the
geographical middle of Shelby
County, Center is the county
seat and home of the largest
school district in the County.
Center ISD is committed to

Excelsior ISD
prepares students well
Excelsior ISD is located in
the Aiken community. It offers
classes for pre-kindergarten
through eighth grade.
With its various educational
programs, Excelsior prepares
students for the journey ahead
to high school.
Walnut Grove School No.
47 was in existence in 1895
when there were more than 90
Shelby County school districts.
It was later changed to Excelsior
No. 47 and remains that
today.
R. Wheeler was one of the
first trustees of this school
and in 1910 the trustees were
W.E. Chandler, J.M. Windham,
and J.H. Beck. The teachers
that year were Weldon Simpson
Wheeler and Thomas
Covington.
Several of Excelsior ISD’s
students are seen pictured at
left. With its smaller class sizes,
Excelsior teachers are able to
give their students more individualized
instruction, which
can result in higher test scores.
Students who graduate from
Excelsior ISD in the eighth
grade complete their education
at either Martinsville ISD High
School or Center High School.

825. The water supply comes
from a brand new Reverse Osmosis
plant recently opened within
the city limits. Joaquin has its own
sewer department and a local contractor

Joaquin also has a fine Volunteer
Fire Department, with Perry
Pugh as Fire Chief. Joaquin’s Fire
Marshall is Jeremy Boyett.
Joaquin’s greatest attractions
are the nearby Toledo Bend Reservoir
and the Sabine National
Forest, which lies just south of
town. The attractive Toledo Bend
offers miles of lovely forested
shores for exploring, boating,
excellent fishing, and full recreational
facilities.
In addition, the Sabine National
Forest offers deer hunting
in season. Within the forest is
Boles Field, one of the few federally
sanctioned resting places for
famous foxhounds.

Welcome to SHELBYVILLE, TEXAS
Shelbyville is at the junction of Farm Road 417 and
Hwy 87, seven miles southeast of Center in east
central Shelby County.
The area was settled in the 1820s by people who
came from Tennessee.
The community was originally called Nashville, and
was the county seat of Shelby County.
The Congress of the Republic of Texas changed its
name to Shelbyville in 1837.
Isaac Shelby was the hero of the American Revolution
and governor of Kentucky. Shelbyville was where
the Regulator-Moderator War started, and most of the
major battles of the feud were fought in its vicinity.
The town had a Republic of Texas post office established
by 1843.
In 1866, the county records were moved to the center
of the county by night and hidden there. This led to
a new county-seat designation that same year.

Shelbyville History
A long tradition
of education
The earliest data available for Shelbyville School shows
that there was a school in existence as early as 1868. At
that time, Professor W. C. Huntington and his wife, Mary S.
Huntington, had charge of the Shelbyville School.
The school at that time may have been a prep-type school
with boarders. Reportedly, a little building to the right of the
Huntington home, known as “the library,” was where the
teaching was accomplished. Mary Huntington continued the
school after her husband died in 1884 until 1888.
In about 1888, M. M. Dupre moved to East Texas from
Sarepta, Miss. to assume the position of superintendent of
schools in Shelbyville. According to some older Shelbyville
residents, the school was located near the Shelbyville
Methodist Church in a two-story building. Until 1903,
the schools in Shelbyville were called common schools
and were under the control of the Shelby County School
Superintendent.
In February of 1903, W. D. Ellington petitioned the
commissioner’s court for an election to establish a free
school and an independent school district. The election,
held in March of 1903, carried in favor of the independent
school. In June 1903, Shelbyville Independent School
District was officially established. At that time, W. C. Hurst
was superintendent of the school.
The school buildings have undergone many changes
through the years. In 1924, the school was known as the
“Little White Schoolhouse” and was located near the
Shelbyville Methodist Church. In 1927, the land across the
road was purchased and the school moved to its current
location. Frank Pigg built the original brick high school
building in 1927. In the late 1930s, the W. P. A. built the
Rock Building and the old wooden gym, which burned in
1971. In 1954, the section of the school plant known as the
“Haley Building” was built and later dedicated in memory of
Reeves Haley who had taught and served as superintendent
of schools for many years.
In 1965, the issue of segregation brought a turning point
when parents of black and white children were given the
right to choose which school to attend. This was first
granted to elementary students, and five black elementary
students enrolled at Shelbyville. In 1966, freedom of choice
was extended to both elementary and high school students,
and six black students attended Shelbyville that year. Then,
in the fall of 1970, total integration was implemented when
the entire East Liberty School began to attending school at
the Shelbyville campus. To accommodate this integration,

the old, red brick high school
was torn down and new
classrooms were built.
Shelbyville has continued
to change over the years.
In 1971, the East Liberty
gym was relocated to the
Shelbyville campus to replace
the old wooden gymnasium.
Sometime between 1986 and
1987 the field house/small
gym was added. In 1988,
the cafetorium and football
stadium were completed.
The S. W. Carter Elementary
building was opened for
classes early in 1989. In
1992, middle school students
found a new home in a single
building located between
the elementary school and
football stadium. The Haley
building was removed in
1995 and the high school
wing built in 1971 was
encompassed by a new high
school that was completed
in 1996. Since then, SISD
has completed a renovated
cafetorium and stage, a
new gymnasium, baseball/
softball fields, a new prekindergarten/Kindergarten
building, new science
facilities/labs at the Middle
School and High School,
and a new practice gym.

to expand and grow for the
future

District Championships and
individual Champions. The

athletic programs with 2 state
champions in powerlifting in

Timpson Area Chamber of Commerce meets on the 3rd Thursday
each month at the Timpson Public Library. The members and
offi cers enjoy the opportunity to welcome new businesses and
members to the organization.
Timpson is located
in the northwest
corner of Shelby
County, six miles
east of Nacogdoches County
and six miles south of Panola
County. Timpson is twenty-five
miles west of the Sabine River,
which is the state line and thirty-one
miles north of Nacogdoches,
the oldest town in Texas.
The town takes its name
from a son-in-law of one of the
heavy railroad stockholders,
a Mr. Timpson, who lived in
New York. Like all railroad
towns, Timpson was laid out
with the railroad, not north
and south like most towns are.
Therefore, the streets run at an
angle of 43 degrees ‘off.’ The
railroad surveyor for this section
was named Charlie Noblet.
After laying out the railroad, he
surveyed the town. He made it
one-mile square then divided
it into ordinary lots and blocks
and named the streets.
Traveling the streets of
Timpson, you will find Jacob
and Bremond, and streets
named after residents are Todd
and McLaughlin. The town site
was located in an old-time field,

Timpson, Bobo, and Blair.”

World War I soldiers spread it
far and wide.
Whether you are travelling
Hwy 84, Hwy 87 or Hwy 59 you
stand a good chance of passing
through Timpson. The good
folks of Timpson will always
make you feel welcome, so stop
in and check out the parks,
nearby lakes or one of the local
diners. Major businesses include
two local sawmills, Cobb
Hatchery and of course Timpson
High School, the home of
the fighting Timpson Bears
and renowned marching band.
The Timpson Area Chamber
of Commerce in conjunction
with the City holds the
annual Frontier Days on the
first weekend of July. People
from near and far enjoy the
parade, the many activities
there are to participate in and,
of course, the street dance. In
2015, the local paper added the
announcement of the Cowboy
of the Year to the festivities.
Timpson and other surrounding
towns paid tribute to their
“outstanding cowboys” which
hopefully will be an annual tradition.

the bond election.

“Today marks a milestone
and a new beginning
for our school district. Our
vision, with God’s blessings,
is to become the best school
district in the State of Texas.
Therefore, we are set to construct
a new state of the art
Collegiate and Career Center
and event center. The
primary construction will
consist of a 55,000 square
foot facility that includes a
Collegiate Center, Event
Center, and Agriculture Science
Facility.

are placed marks the far
end of the new facility which
will span to where the field
house is located now or at
least partially located now.
In this new facility, students
will be offered the chance
to gain many college and
career hours as they prepare
for a successful career.
They will have the chance to
earn associates degrees, college
hours, and certificates
preparing them for a greater
chance of success in college
or for the workplace.
“To our knowledge, this
type of facility is a new conceptual
model that demonstrates
a passion toward
preparing students for their
futures. We are very proud
that our community wishes
to invest so freely into the
lives of children and we
hope this is the beginning
of something great that will
endure the test of time and
make these children’s lives
richer. In other projects
across the campus, we are
renovating and expanding
the current band hall, building
a new softball field and
complex, building a new
playground, a new bus barn

entire campus. As we look
into the future, let us learn
from where we have been
