that has a comparatively narrow transverse section, the delay between the precipitation<br />
<strong>and</strong> the discharge of the river is short (Tossini 1959).<br />
The climatic characteristics of the basin determine the possibility of occurrence<br />
of floods in any time of the year. As the slope is pronounced, floods caused<br />
as consequence of intense rains are rapid <strong>and</strong> concentrated on small areas.<br />
Figure 4.4 shows mean flows of the Uruguay River at different sections. The<br />
hydrological regime presents large discharges in Winter <strong>and</strong> lower waters in<br />
Summer.<br />
