G-H Girls Drop
Pair of Games
It’s been a challenging season to date for
the Garner-Hayfield softball team and
the weather has not helped the Cardinals’
cause. Garner managed to complete
only two of five games last week as wet
weather interfered with games on Monday,
Thursday and Friday.
The rain stopped long enough on Tuesday
for G-H to host Algona in a non-conference
match up. The Bulldogs scored
two runs in the first inning to take an early
lead, but Garner answered with a run
in their half of the first to keep the game
close. Algona then scored multiple runs
in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings
while holding the Cardinals scoreless
to post an 11 - 1 victory.
G-H finished the night with six hits but
were unable to string them together and
produce runs. Jasmine Doble hit a pair
of singles to lead the Cards while Taylor
Nelson, Jenna Wellik, Karah Huinker
and Megan Waddingham all added base
hits. Doble surrendered 11 hits and four
walks on the mound for Garner while
picking up four strikeouts.
“When our number of hits match our
number of errors, its hard to win,” remarked
coach Anita Smith. “It was a
positive for us to have lots of base runners
tonight, but we stranded many of
them. We just couldn’t come up with that
big hit when it was really needed.”
G-H resumed North Iowa conference
play on Wednesday with a home game
with Forest City. After two scoreless innings,
the Indians gained the lead with
three runs in the top of the third. Forest
City then added lone insurance runs in
the fifth and seventh inning on the way
to a 5 - 0 win.
Again, the Cardinals were able to produce
hits at the plate but the inability to
put the ball in play with runners in scoring
position kept G-H scoreless. Jasmine
Doble had another two-hit night for the
Cards and Chelsey Formanek added
a pair of singles to the offense. Megan
Waddingham’s third-inning single was
the other offensive bright spot for Garner.
Jasmine Doble again went the distance
on the mound for Garner, allowing a
dozen hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Cardinals Crush Forest City
Wet, stormy weather led to an abbreviated
week of baseball action for the Garner-Hayfield
Cardinals. Games at Osage
on Monday and Belmond on Friday were
both postponed due to the wet conditions
while Thursday’s game at West Fork
was called off in the fifth inning when a
heavy thunderstorm arrived. The Cards
hosted Algona on Tuesday, dropping
a 10-run decision to the Bulldogs but
bounced back with a big win over Forest
City on Wednesday.
Algona scored five runs in the first inning
and three more in the second on the
way to a 12 - 2 win over the Cardinals.
Algona then stretched the lead to 9 - 0
in the fourth inning when the Cardinals
plated two runs to keep the game interesting.
Three Bulldog runs in the fifth
inning led to an early end to the game.
G-H managed only two hits in the
game, with Tom Legge picking up two
RBI’s on a single. Nick Svare’s single
was the only other hit of the game for
Garner. Tim Molencamp started on the
mound, allowing 11 hits and four walks
with a strikeout. Zach Buseman relieved
Molencamp in the fifth, holding the
Bulldogs to no hits with two walks.
G-H got back into the win column in a
big way against Forest City on Wednesday.
After giving the Indians a run in
the top of the first, the Cardinals took
advantage of some Forest City pitching
trouble to score seven runs in their half
of the first. Four walks, three hits and
two Indian errors allowed the Cardinals
to send a dozen batters to the plate in that
inning. The Garner bats remained hot in
the second, bringing home three runs in
that inning followed by a four-run fourth
that resulted in an early end to the game.
Aaron Babcock had a big night at the
plate for Garner, finishing the night with
three RBI’s on two hits. Joe Ermer added
a single and a double to the offense followed
by Nick Svare and Blake Risius
with two hits apiece. Tom Legge and
Zach Buseman completed the offensive
effort with a single each.
Nick Svare tossed a one-hitter for
the Cards while earning the win. Svare
Coach Smith stated, “The game was a
step in the right direction for us. Overall,
it was a decent game. We made some
base running mistakes and just couldn’t
get the hits grouped together to score,
but we had some base runners on.”
In the first game of the season, an untimely
storm cost the Cardinals what
would have likely been a victory. That
was the case again on Thursday as Garner-Hayfield
traveled to Northwood, In
just three innings the Cards had already
collected 10 hits and were ahead 5 - 1
when the clouds opened up and halted
the game.
G-H is now 2 - 10 overall and 1 - 3
in North Iowa Conference play and will
have a full week of action, providing
the weather cooperates. The Cardinals
are scheduled to play at North Iowa on
Monday before hosting Clear Lake and
West Hancock on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Garner will then travel to Newman
on Friday before hosting the Cardinal
Invitational Tournament on Saturday.
Cardinal coach Bill Awtry commented,
“This was a good win for us. Forest City
has been playing good ball and we knew
we would have to play well to win. We
had great at-bats and were very patient.
Once we got runners on base we were
able to do a lot of things. We ran well
and put some pressure on their defense
which made them do some things that
were out of character. Aaron Babcock
got his first varsity start and did a nice
job at the plate going two-for-three with
three RBI’s. He had been swinging the
bal well at the JV level and continued
to do so tonight. Nick Svare did a very
good job on the mound. He had good
control of his pitches and hit his spots
pretty well.”
Stormy weather on Thursday turned
a very close game at West Fork into a
disappointing Cardinal loss. West Fork
scored once in the third inning to take
an early lead, but G-H knotted the score
with a run in the fourth. West Fork answered
with a run in their half of the
fourth and then Mother Nature decided
to send everyone home.
G-H finished the night with four hits
as Nathan Hrubes, Blake Risius, Damon
Quandt and Keith Schwickerath all singled.
Blake Risius allowed four hits and
a walk on the mound for Garner while
fanning two Warhawks.
The Cardinals are now 3 - 11 on the
year and 2 - 2 in North Iowa Conference
play. They will spend plenty of time on
the road this week, traveling to North
Iowa on Monday, Garrigan on Tuesday,
Central Springs on Thursday and Newman
on Friday. The Cards will have one
home game this week, hosting West
Hancock on Wednesday.
