While many of us take part in
celebrating St Patrick's Day,
there are probably few
New Zealand's who know much
about the Patron Saint of Ireland
KNOWN as the ‘Apostle of Ireland’, St
Patrick is one of the world’s most popular
saints.
Enslaved as a young teen by pagans and
Druids, he turned to God while in captivity.
Escaping at age 20, he returned to his
family and began studying for the
priesthood.
He preached throughout Ireland
converting many for 40 years. During his
teachings he often used shamrocks to
explain the Holy Trinity - Father, Son, Holy
Spirit.
He died at Saul, the site of the first
church he built, on March 17.
St Patrick’s Day commemorates his
death.
