Harewood amateur in
New Zealand Open
• By Gordon Findlater
MATT MCLEAN has claimed
one of only six spots out of
172 players who attempted to
qualify for the New Zealand
Open.
McLean, 21, will be one of
only four amateurs to tee off
in today’s New Zealand Open
being played at The Hills
and Millbrook golf clubs in
Queenstown. The open finishes
on Sunday.
To qualify, the Harewood
club amateur finished
second in the regional
qualifying tournament at the
Christchurch Golf Club. Then
McLean sealed his spot in the
open by finishing tied for first
in the last stage of qualifying
in Cromwell on Monday.
“I’ve tried to qualify a few
times in the past and haven’t
made it past the first stage in
Christchurch. I was quietly
confident going into Cromwell
because I’ve played there quite
a few times, so I was pretty
proud of myself to get it done,”
said McLean.
He will not only get to play
alongside some of Australasia’s
top golfers but also some of
“I got to see some of them
Warne congratulated me on
qualifying and he was really
nice to talk to,” said McLean.
The amateur is in his fourth
year at Lincoln University on
a golfing scholarship. He also
works part time in the pro
shop and as a greenkeeper at
the Harewood Golf Club.
McLean’s aim at the open is
to make the cut for the final
two rounds at the weekend and
to finish as the top amateur.
Strike bowler’s 10-wicket bag
• By Gordon Findlater
SUMNER’S groundsman rolled
the pitch at St Leonards Square
on Saturday morning before
rolling New Brighton’s batting
line-up in the afternoon.
It was the perfect day at the
office for Brendon Wellington
who picked up a 10-wicket haul
in the first day of a two-day
match in the Metro senior A
competition.
Sumner were asked to bat and
scored a first innings total of
294/8 before it became the Wellington
show. The groundsman
come left-arm strike bowler had
career best figures of 7-30 as
New Brighton were dismissed
for 151 in just the 22nd over.
“It helps knowing where the
juicy parts in the pitch are,” said
Wellington.
The home side then enforced
the follow on, allowing Wellington
to complete his 10-wicket
haul before the day was done as
he picked up 3-28 prior to the
close of play.
“I did some pretty good celebratory
moves . . . I even pulled
out a special celebration, the
chainsaw.”
New Brighton will resume on
88/4 in the second day of the
match on Saturday, still 55 runs
behind Sumner.
