aim of sport administrator
What does your involvement
with The Star City2Surf with
Mike Pero Real Estate involve?
Sport Canterbury has been a
sponsor of the 6km run/walk
for the last two years. And so as
part of our activation we had a
conversation with Star Media
about how we could activate
sponsorship. Last year we did
that around the Green Prescription
programme, which was
providing support to adults who
wanted to engage. This year
because we had the Healthy
Families New Zealand contract
we saw that as a way to have a
different conversation and Star
Media were incredibly supportive
and looked at how it could make
healthier choices more acceptable.
It was really open to looking
at getting fresh fruit at the finish
line and we’ve been looking at
every opportunity we could find
through that to promote healthy
lifestyles. New Zealand’s rates of
preventable chronic diseases is
unsustainable. Here’s a chance to
do things differently.
Will you be taking part?
I will at minimum walk. I’ll be
there for sure.
Has sport always been a big
part of your life?
Absolutely. I came from a
sporting Southland family and I
don’t think it was ever an option
I wouldn’t do sport. My father
was in athletics, rowing and rugby,
and my mother was a talented
dancer and came from horse
racing family and did marching.
I started my physical activity
journey in dancing before I could
walk, and then that morphed
into figure skating. I’ve played
netball and softball. My uncles
and cousins all played rugby for
Southland Stags.
HELPFUL:
When Jill
Borland isn’t
working, she
spends time
competing
with her Kia
Kaha figure
skating team.
Can you tell me about the
figure skating?
I skated competitively and I
was selected to represent New
Zealand and compete overseas,
but I didn’t because back then
it was expensive. I did compete
at one Australian competition,
but then I fell into coaching. I
coached for many years, and
then got back into skating after
the earthquakes. I’ve been doing
masters figure skating and I’m in
a team called Kia Kaha, which
was born out of the quakes.
We competed at the Australian
National Champs last year and
we came fifth out of 12. But we’re
hoping for bigger and better
things this year. Age is no barrier!
Where have you coached?
In New Zealand and India.
I’m excited because my husband,
Darryn Ward, and I went to
northern India to coach about
10 years ago. He coaches ice
hockey and the young girls I
worked with had last year started
India’s first ice hockey team.
They are in Bangkok competing
against the New Zealand under18
team. They just had their first
international win and I feel really
excited because on the India
team there are five ex-students of
mine, and on the New Zealand
team there are five of my exstudents.
Wow, that’s impressive. How
did you end up going over there
to coach?
My husband was on an ice
hockey development camp in
northern Europe and he met
this gentleman from India who
asked if he wanted to go over
and coach. He’s not very good
at saying no and the guy later
emailed him and said when are
you coming? He deferred it, but
then when he eventually did go,
he said my new girlfriend is a
figure skating coach, so we both
went over. It was a life changing
experience. We were there for
about two months.
Have you had any injuries
while skating?
Yes. Sometimes I go to the
physio and they say have you ever
fallen before? And you say yes,
thousands of times (laughs). But
I’ve just had wear and tear injuries
like to my knees and my hips. I’ve
had a couple of concussions.
And back to the City2Surf,
what would you say to people
who are thinking about taking
part?
Give it a go, anybody can. It’s a
great way to spend a Sunday, even
if you just walk with friends.
