A Message of Thanks
Dear Friends,
Lee Trevino, regarded as one of the top golfers of our time, once said, “There are two things you
can do with your head down – play golf and pray.” This charity event, the Paulines Golf
for a Cause, merges the game of golf and spirituality. Through your generous support and participation
today, you are contributing to the mission of the Daughters of Saint Paul by helping the Sisters
in Singapore build a new convent for their residence and their apostolate of evangelization with the
media.
The following pages in this souvenir magazine illustrate the life and the mission of the Daughters
of Saint Paul, locally and around the world. Our heartfelt thanks to you for your kind support in
helping us continue our media ministry by putting a roof over our heads as we seek new ways to
nourish the faith and spiritual life of the people in Singapore, and beyond.
In the ever evolving field of the media, our mission today includes both new media (digital,
social and multi-media) and traditional media (publication and distribution of bibles, books and
audiovisuals on spirituality, faith formation, family life etc.). Besides writing and publishing, we also
serve the church and society through audiovisual production, media literacy, religious education,
adult faith formation and spiritual development.
Through your support, you become our mission partners as you
indirectly participate in our call to bring the Gospel message of joy
and love in the media of today and consequently, build up the
body of Christ here in Singapore.
As you bowed your heads to play golf today, we
gratefully bowed our heads to God and prayed for all
of you.
May God bless each of you and be assured of our continual

A Message of Thanks
Dear Friends,
Once again, you have willingly and generously responded to the
call to help our religious brothers and sisters.
The Religious Communities have been active in Singapore for
over 100 years and even with little material help, they have been
primarily responsible for establishing and running schools, hospitals,
homes for the aged and sick as well as training centres.
Today, we are called to help the Daughters of
Saint Paul in their efforts to establish a permanent
convent in Singapore and the monies raised
today will go some way to help them to realise
their dreams.

OUR HISTORY

It all began at the turn of the century,
when 16 year old James Alberione,
a seminarian in Alba, Italy spent the
night of 31st December 1900 in Eucharistic
Adoration at the Cathedral of Alba. There, he
received a particular enlightenment from the
Lord, the initial inspiration for a mission "to
do something for God and the people of the
new (20th) century."
Inspired by the universal spirit of St Paul,
Alberione recognised that the media was a
gift of God that could be used to reach the
whole world with the message of the Gospel.
He founded the Daughters of Saint Paul
in 1915 (and one year prior, the Society
of Saint Paul for priests and brothers) and
eventually, a total of 10 Institutes called the
Pauline Family.
Bringing the Good News to all.
He envisioned a community of priests,
brothers, sisters, lay men and women all
committed to evangelising through every
form of communication. In the Daughters
of St Paul he saw women participating in
the priestly mission of preaching, not from
a pulpit but from writing desks and printing
presses. ‘Woman is on the move,’ Alberione
had written, ‘and it is a marvellous thing!’

In today’s culture of modern communications and new challenges in society,
our central mission is to communicate Christ, in the media languages familiar
to the masses but first and foremost, through the witness of our lives,
consecrated to God and dedicated to the Gospel.
Our community in
Singapore was established
in 1994 as part of the
missionary project on the birth
centenary of our co-Foundress
Venerable Thecla Merlo. Over
the past two decades, we have
written and produced books,
videos, and CDs.
We run a small Media Centre
at Church of the Risen Christ
(Toa Payoh) and on a regular
basis, conduct media outreaches
in parishes and schools. Part
of our ministry also includes
Media Spirituality and Literacy
formation for youth and adults.
Over the Advent-Christmas
seasons, we carry out our
apostolate in Jurong Point Mall
in an effort to bring Christ
to the marketplace with a
selection of Bibles, spiritual
books and media items. We
have also participated in the
Cana Film Festival, as a way
of sharing the Church’s social
teachings through film.

Singapore in 1994, the
Archdiocese has generously
provided us with a convent
in Jurong West but due to
circumstances, we are now
tasked with the challenge
of building our own mission
house in Singapore. We
appeal to all who would like
to support our ministry to
help us build our convent
so that we can remain here
to serve the local Church of
Singapore.
