Idols desecrated at two temples in Sirajganj

Miscreants have desecrated three
idols of Hindu goddesses at two
temples in Belkuchi upazila of Sirajganj.
They decapitated the idol at
Baroari Kali Temple and vandalised
a Kali idol and a Sarashwati
idol at one Kalipada Sarker’s family
temple in Khidra Joknala village of
Bhangabari union of the upazila in
the dead of night on Monday, according
to locals.
A team of police have already
visited the area.
Belkuchi police station Officerin-Charge
Sazzad Hossain said the
miscreants had broken into the
temples sometime in the night and
vandalised the idols.
Upazila Puja Udjapon Committee’s
General Secretary Baidyanath
Ray condemned the incident and
demanded the speedy arrest of the
culprits.
A case is yet to be filed regarding
the matter.
Police are also investigating
whether the desecration of the
idols has any link to a recent brawl
over the student elections at a local
primary school. •
Three killed
in Bagerhat
trawler capsize

At least three women drowned
and 20 people went missing as a
trawler, carrying 60-70 passengers,
capsized in the Panguchi River in
Moralganj upazila of the district
yesterday.
The deceased were Beauty, 38,
resident of Kalikabari, Peyara, 50,
resident of Guyabaria and Sufiya,
75, resident of Chingrigat area, police
said.
Morrelganj OC Rasedul Kabir
said the trawler sank in the river
around 10:30am while heading
towards Purano Thanaghat from
Srombariaghat. •
One gets life-term for
killing wife

A court in the district sentenced
a man to life term imprisonment
for killing his wife
in Sadar upazila of the district.
District and Session Judge
Md Mizanur Rahman pronounced
the verdict convicting
Roman Mian, son of Farid
Mian of village Beutha in the
upazila, for killing his wife
Urmi Akter in 2014.
According to the prosecution,
on April 19 in 2014,
Roman Mian went to his father-in-law’s
house at Gilando
village in the district to bring
back his wife. But his mother-in-law
did not allow him
to bring his wife back, which
made him furious.
At one stage, he attacked
his wife with sharp knife, leaving
her seriously wounded.
Urmi was first admitted to
Manikganj Sadar Hospital in
a critical condition. Later she
was shifted to Dhaka Madical
College hospital where she
died on April 21 in 2014.
The next day (April 22), Abul
Kalam Azad, father of the victim,
filed a case with Manikganj
Police Station against Roman,
his two friends and his parents.
Police after investigation
submitted a charge-sheet to
the court.
The judge after examining
the witnesses and evidences
handed down the verdict today.

Man gets life for raping
handicapped teen girl

A 37-year-old man has been
sentenced to life term rigorous
imprisonment and fined Tk
50,000 for raping a physically
challenged teenage girl in
Sherpur.
Judge Md Mosleh Uddin of
the district’s Women Children
Repression Prevention Tribunal
yesterday pronounced the
verdict against Mofiz Uddin, a
resident of Nalitabari upazila’s
Sidhuli village.
The judge also ordered the
authorities concerned to realise
the fine and give it to the victim’s
family as compensation.
Public Prosecutor Golam
Kibria Bulu said that Mofiz
picked up the girl, who was
just 14 then, from her house,
where she was living with her
grandmother Firoza Begum,
to a nearby bamboo grove,
raping her there on April 25
evening last year.
After she started screaming,
Firoza came to her rescue,
though Mofiz, an irrigation
machine operator, managed
to flee the scene in the meantime,
the PP added.
Later a case was filed
against Mofiz as the lone suspect,
in which saw nine prosecution
witnesses testified.
The victim’s parents are
apparel workers in Dhaka,
where they were during the
incident. •
