OUR NEWS...
Next stop -
Singapore!
by Selina Boyd & Louise Courtenay
SELINA & LOUISE OUTSIDE
DULWICH COLLEGE, SINGAPORE
E
ducating your child outside of the
UK will either make you shudder
(why on EARTH would you do
this?!) or ignite intrigue as to what is on
offer and whether the level of education
will be the same as that offered in Blighty.
The education sector within Asia
continues to be an area of rapid
growth with more schools opening
each year due to high demand.
With help from our recent successful
crowdfunding, School Notices hopes to
make Asia one of the starting points in
which to expand internationally. Where
better then than to start our foray into
the global arena than Singapore?
Singapore has wrongly been branded as
a humid backwater in South East Asia with
below par options for schooling. The island,
affectionately known as the ‘little red dot’,
is making waves in the education world
with many international schools making
their mark within the city. The schools
cover a wide range of options to meet the
specific needs of expatriate children, which
now reads like a restaurant menu, catering
for most nationalities and demands.
At only 27km long by 50km wide (that’s
17 miles versus 31 miles for those of you who
are not working to metric conversions) and a
"...the island is home to a staggering
63 international schools with an
average of 2,000 pupils per school!"
total population of 5.7million (1.43 million
of which are non-residents) the island is
home to a staggering 63 international schools
with an average of 2,000 pupils per school!
An incredible feat when you think of the
amount of space you need to have in order to
house this number of pupils on a small island
without even accounting for local institutions.
Co-founder of School Notices, Gordon
Dawson, along with Selina Boyd and Louise
Courtenay, braved the Lion City in January
and all it had to offer in order to get the ball
rolling for School Notices in the region.
Together they targeted the first tier of top
schools and were met with an enthusiastic
reception. "The schools out in Singapore get
the concept instantly", said Gordon, "they are
incredibly technologically savvy and dynamic".
Not surprising, considering the transient
life of an expat is a fast moving one.
The trip was a huge success and there was
a great buzz about School Notices, with one
leading school having already agreed to enrol.
School Notices Asia is well set for launch
this summer and the expansion is underway!
HEALTH &
WELLBEING
by Leonora Bamford, founder of My Baba
"...a healthy gut
makes a
healthy body"
Health and wellbeing is something all parents want for their children.
From the moment they are conceived all you wish for is a healthy baby
and when you start weaning it’s something one thinks about even more.
People can, in this age, get overly
obsessed with what’s healthy and
what's not and although I think it’s
important we teach our children about the
food they eat and where it comes from, I
cringe when I hear my daughter talking
about ‘gluten free’ and 'intolerances'. I
found out very early on that my daughter
had a strong intolerance to lactose but I
can’t help but feel that we’re projecting
our food obsessions onto our children.
More than ever I feel my father’s
view ‘everything in moderation’ is key.
I don’t agree with eating Nutella for
breakfast, something I believe to have zero
nutritional value and laden with nasties,
however, we eat it on pancakes pretty
much every Saturday as a family ritual
and I don’t think that’s a bad thing!
I like to cook with fresh ingredients
and am extremely lucky to have a butcher,
fishmonger and greengrocer within walking
distance and on the weekends we live on
a farm. I know it’s not always easy, but as
a family we love cooking and we try to
eat sensible balanced meals using seasonal
ingredients where possible. I love nothing
more than digging out recipe books and
letting the children pick new recipes to try.
I don’t eat meat at every meal and if
we cook a chicken, we use every bit of it
and would never dream of throwing the
carcass before making a delicious stock
for soup later in the week. Something
I learnt from my grandmother.
I’m also a huge believer in the great
outdoors and my children have always
loved playing outside come rain or shine.
I remember one Easter holiday they pretty
much spent every day in the garden digging
for worms and planting seeds; they grew
so much that holiday and seemed to bond
as siblings, it was very special to watch.
"I can’t help but feel that we’re projecting
our food obsessions onto our children"
Another thing I’ve been interested
in is mindfulness and meditation for a
healthy mind. My son loves meditation
and every year I make a promise to
spend just 10 minutes a day practicing
myself. Mindfulness is a topic we get
asked about a lot at My Baba and we
have some great articles on the subject.
The last thing I would like to touch on is
vitamins and probiotics for children. People
often ask me why, if I’m so healthy and feed
my children the right thing, would they need them? When
my son was little, he was on antibiotics and I hated the idea. I
went to Zita, whose supplements I had taken throughout my
pregnancy and asked her which brand was best to give my son.
I’ve always believed that a healthy gut makes a healthy body,
and she said we ought to make our own; a product made in
England that we could trust and one I would be happy giving
to my children. The process took longer than anticipated but
we launched our 'magic powder' (as my kids call it) last year,
which is loaded with 14 essential vitamins and both strains of
probiotics. We get wonderful messages of support from our
clients who all use them in different ways, from sprinkling
over porridge to blending in their morning smoothies.
While I can't profess to keeping all lurgies at bay,
research shows that children who take a daily supplement
like ours, spend more days at school and less days
off sick and that’s good enough reason for me.
HEAD
START
Lynne Sanders, cosmetic scientist
and founder of bespoke British
beauty brand Cosmetics à La Carte,
discusses teenage make-up.
I
believe make-up is about confidence
and feeling good about ourselves
no matter what our age. Teenagers
are so naturally beautiful, but a careful
skincare regime should always be the
first step to give their complexion an
advantage into their 20s and beyond.
1. Choose cleansing lotions, or micellar
waters, which remove impurities but also
moisturise, followed by a hydrating and
soothing rinse such as our Rosewater Tonic.
2. Exfoliate gently two to three
times a week to guard against breakouts.
Unless recommended by a doctor,
choose natural over acid-based facial
scrubs as these can cause sensitivity.
3. I recommend the same cleansing
routine for boys, though they may prefer
a different fragrance. It is also crucial
to keep razors sharp, and phone screens
clean to prevent bacteria entering pores.
4. Eyebrows are a key feature of anyone’s
face and it is often what teenagers experiment
with first. Experiencing professional eyebrow
maintenance early on, such as threading or
shaping, is a superb way to learn without
risking over-plucking. It is hugely helpful
for fair-haired teens to learn how to draw in
otherwise invisible eyebrows with a pencil or
ink, such as our award-winning Brow Ink.
5. Experimenting with make-up is
tremendous fun, but there are some basic
principles which we can teach from the
outset. Knowing these skills enables
young people to choose when to make
a statement or to perfect a natural look.
This generates valuable confidence as they
go on into higher education and work.
6. Young complexions benefit from
light, oil-free products to minimise blocked
pores. An oil-free tinted moisturiser such
as Sheer Tint balances redness, hydrates and
protects the skin with mineral SPF. Using a
foundation brush or sponge will ensure light
application and the most natural appearance.
7. A light-reflective, sheer concealer
such as Secret Light downplays the
dark circles caused by exams. A higher
pigment concealer like Undercover
can tackle breakouts on the face.
8. For persistent problems like acne,
always go to a dermatologist. Wearing
make-up is still possible, but choose
oil and preservative-free formulas like
"Keep phone screens
clean to prevent
bacteria entering pores"
Cover Tint Flawless Touch Foundation.
9. For a polished yet age-appropriate
look, try a wash of colour across the eyelid,
offset with a statement line along the lashes.
Light pastels with a subtle shimmer such
as our Shimmer Outliner in Shell or Breeze,
paired with a dark grey or brown pencil,
work well for both brown and blue eyes.
Sheer Balm lipsticks are ideal pairings, which
enhance features without ageing the look.
10. At other times, be adventurous with
a bright liner such as Shimmer Outliner
in Dragonfly. Or wear a dark grey or
black flick mascara with a pretty pink
gloss such as Lip Lacquer in Lychee.
What make-up to wear, for teens and
adults alike, is ultimately a choice for
the individual, which is why we offer a
Spring into
Summer
by Rebecca Caplan, co-founder of Fitique -
The independent womens' fitness boutique
Spring is around the corner. Are you
creeping out of winter hibernation and
wondering how to prepare your body for
that holiday bikini? Here are my top tips for
achieving a healthier and fitter you…
1Set yourself a goal. Enter
an event that’s just beyond
your reach. Tell people you’re
doing it. Fear of failure and
not wanting to let people
down is very real and will
make you stick to your guns.
2Never say never! How
many times do friends say
“I just can’t run"? Well, let me
tell you, just about anyone
can run! The popular couch
to 5k running apps (there
are a few) take you through
every step. Alternatively,
try a discipline you haven’t
done before – pilates, barre,
yoga, a fitness bootcamp
and keep trying until you
find something you like.
3Buy some good kit. Those
old tracksuit bottoms
and a cotton t-shirt are
not going to help - in fact
they will positively hinder
you. Exercise kit now is
functional, attractive,
comfortable and technical.
The right kit will make
you feel good and you
will want to exercise.
your fitness
4Plan activities and write
them in your diary. This
avoids other things creeping
in and taking over.
5Join a group e.g. a run
club or a swim group.
There are numerous clubs
catering for all disciplines
and abilities. Fitique’s
weekly run club welcomes
all abilities and a qualified
coach leads and motivates
runners. New friendships are
made and the camaraderie,
especially when running in
bad weather, is priceless!
A number of the group
have even decided to enter
a 10k race this summer
having never run before!
6Find a friend with a
similar goal and agree
to do it together. You are
less likely to let someone
else down if you’ve
agreed on something.
7Put on your exercise
kit when you get up!
Whilst it’s easy to wear
this comfy kit all day (such
is the advancement in
modern fabrics), you are not
going to want to go to bed
having done no exercise.
8Get fitted for a good
pair of trainers and a
sportsbra designed with
your specific discipline
in mind.
in a fitness
9Invest watch or tracker. These
are great for staying focused
on your exercise, weight,
bodymass, steps taken etc.
10
www.fitique.co.uk
Always have bananas
in your house and
workplace - they fill you
up and are a great pre or
post exercise snack.
CLEAN
DRIVING
by Ryder Ryan of
RyderCar.com
"Range anxiety -
sweaty palms and
increased heart rate
when you only have
a few miles left
of charge..."
I’d hazard a guess that if you asked most
people on the street when the first
electric car was produced, they might
guess at twenty years ago. But should they
tell you that it was around 1890 thanks
to a certain American chemist called
William Morrison, kidnap them, and take
them straight to your next pub quiz!
In fact, by 1900, electric cars were in
their heyday, accounting for around a third
of all vehicles on the road. However by
1935 due to high prices, electric vehicles
had all but disappeared. Fast forward to
1997 and Toyota launch the Prius; the first,
mass-produced hybrid electric vehicle.
Now, all the mainstream car makers are
offering high-quality electric models, either
battery only, electric or plug-in hybrids.
Personally, I’m not convinced that the
hybrid vehicle has a long term future. It
still currently costs more to purchase than
its fossil fuelled equivalent and the running
costs are not significantly better compared to
"You could buy a Renault
Zoe from £14,000
right up to a £130,000
Tesla P100D"
a petrol engine vehicle in regular use. Given
the speed at which the efficiency of electric
car batteries are improving, I believe that
the need to have a petrol engine combined
with an electric one will soon be redundant.
However, the hybrid option has proved to
be a gentle introduction to electric based
transport and I suspect a large part of its
success is because it overcomes many of the
current negatives of the full EV (Electric
Vehicle). These are (a) poor mileage range
resulting in ‘range anxiety’, sweaty palms and
increased heart rate when you only have a few
miles left of charge just as you pass the last
exit for 12 miles on the motorway!) (b) it
is a significantly more expensive option
compared to its fossil fuelled equivalent
(even with the current government
subsidy) and (c) a convenient charging
point is required at home because finding
one when out can be very frustrating.
Despite all this, there is still a positive
environmental argument for having an
EV in the family. Clearly this argument is
stronger if you live in a city or town with
excellent public transport facilities should
you run out of juice! But even for those who
live in the countryside, provided you have a
second car for longer journeys, then an EV
should easily cope with driving habits that
are within its working capacity parameters.
Today you can buy a Renault Zoe from
£14,000 right up to a £130,000 Tesla P100D.
Tesla currently dominate the premium end
of the market and have demonstrated how
to produce a terrific EV albeit at a cost.
With technology improving at its usual
breakneck speed, most manufacturers
seem to be launching yet another updated
version of the EV almost annually.
Lastly, for any prospective EV purchaser,
my advice would be that given the speed at
which the EV world is changing, you should
carefully consider the choice of purchase
method. For example if you went down the
contract hire/rental route, you could change
the vehicle every two years and benefit not
only from the upgraded model but most
importantly, from the latest battery range.
I’m sure if William Morrison was alive
today he would be astounded by how things
have changed in the hybrid/electric car
world since his first attempt and probably
even more astounded at the cost of a pint
of beer at your local pub on quiz night!
A CHILD'S
BEST
FRIEND
by Marina Fogle,
co-founder of The Bump Class
"With dogs around, you
are exposing your child
to bacteria, dust and
dirt that they benefit
from in the long term"
I’d been warned that best friends change
for seven-year-olds on a weekly basis. But
whenever I ask my son, Ludo, who his
best friend is, the answer is always the same
- Storm. Not a trendily named Siren in his
class, but our slobbery, smelly, hair shedding,
abundantly loving two-year-old Labrador.
My husband Ben and I met and fell
in love over our dogs. A meeting while
walking our Labradors in Hyde Park
quickly developed into romance and
when we married, our wedding cake
was adorned with sugar figures of our
beloved Maggi and Inca. When children
came into our lives, we were adamant
that the dogs would still sleep on our
bed; they would continue to come
first, not the little human intruders.
Nearly a decade on, I can wholeheartedly
say that bringing up our children with dogs
has been one of the best things we could have
done. There is plenty of research to show
how beneficial a childhood punctuated by
pets is and I’ve seen this first hand. All of us
new mothers reach for the Dettol too quickly.
Terrified of illness making an already chaotic
situation untenable, we try our best to keep
bugs at bay. But with dogs around, you are
exposing your child to bacteria, dust and
dirt that they will benefit from in the long
term. We know that children who have
dogs at home not only visit the doctor less
than their pet-less counterparts but also have
fewer allergies and less incidence of asthma.
But it’s as they grow older that the real
benefits start. Having a dog teaches small
children empathy, something that they need
to learn and many struggle with. Children
naturally behave like little despots, used to
barking orders at their addled parents and
having them fulfilled for fear of a tantrum.
It’s exhausting for us mothers. But recent
research has suggested dog-owning children
are less self-centred at an age where most
children have only thought of themselves.
Having a canine dependent that they
love forces children to assume responsibility.
As I watched my children gleefully build
camps in the pouring rain this weekend,
I wondered whether our insistence that
we take our dogs for a walk whatever the
weather had fostered a toughness that
they might otherwise have lacked.
Ultimately dogs make us happy. Their
presence releases endorphins that make us
feel good. The fact that dogs are considered
therapeutic in hospitals and schools is
testament to this – and it’s a lot cheaper and
more ‘on tap’ than other kinds of therapy.
It’s probably the companionship, the fact
that a dog never gets bored of playing or
sitting patiently, not questioning tears
or irrational behaviour that makes these
animals such popular pets for families.
We spent this Christmas relaxing in the
Bahamian sunshine, indulging in the need
for no shoes and, most of the time, not many
clothes either. Cavorting on deserted white
beaches, retrieving interesting shells from the
sea bed and ice cream every day was heaven
for Ludo and Iona. But around week two the
tears started, “I just miss my Storm so much”,
wailed my little boy. We were seemingly in
paradise, but for us, no paradise is complete
without the company our beloved dog.
I
t is difficult to envisage a circumstance
more tragic than one’s son or daughter
ending their own life. Sadly, today
suicide is the number one cause of
death of people under 35 in the UK.
In 1997 one young man, Charlie
Waller, took his own life after suffering
from depression. He was 28 and, for
whatever reason, had not felt able to
talk to anyone about his struggles.
His friends and family were, obviously,
devastated. What do you do in the face of
such unimaginable tragedy? The Wallers
chose to set up the Charlie Waller Memorial
Trust, to help others avoid going through
what they had experienced. They have worked
tirelessly ever since to help young people
identify the signs of depression in themselves
and others and to take action that will help,
including talking about how they feel.
EMORIAL TRUST
Today, the Trust reaches thousands of
children and young people through its work
in schools, offering free training to teachers,
pupils and parents. It also offers a free mental
health book club, online learning for staff,
posters, leaflets and booklets, including
‘A parent’s guide to depression’ and a new
Wellbeing Action Plan, designed to help
young people keep themselves mentally well.
Every suicide is like a rock thrown
in water. Its sorrowful effects ripple
far and wide, touching hundreds of
lives. When Charlie died, the love of
his family ensured that in the wake of
the sorrow there followed hope.
Although depression is a reality for
many young people, research shows that
it is eminently treatable. Learning how to
recognise and talk about it is the first step.
Employers don’t just focus on academic performance.
Tinker Tailor founder, Bella Eccles, shares how employers assess potential.
SELF-AWA RENESS
How would you describe yourself? How
would others describe you? What have
you learnt about yourself through your
experiences?
What they’re assessing: Whether you
will continue to develop your strengths
and address any weaknesses. How well
you respond to feedback.
LEARNING AGILITY
Aside from your academic studies, can
you grasp a process, a system, a concept
or a skill?
What they’re assessing: Whether
you’re ready to listen, learn and take
some responsibility for your professional
development.
COOKING
THEM
HEALTHY
The Cooking them Healthy girls, Georgie Soskin
and Jo Saunders (with 6 children under 7
between them) are passionate about providing
simple, delicious and nutritious recipes that
work in the context of busy family life.
The gorgeous Spring sunshine is helping
to lift our spirits and finally the days
are gradually getting longer and
warmer. We are enjoying an abundance of
new life with tulips and daffodils exploding
into colour and the trees are starting to bud.
A shift to warmer weather can however
trigger pollen allergies and hayfever leading
to a rise in respiratory issues. It can be helpful
to avoid or reduce intake of dairy products if
excess mucus is a problem and our yummy
tagine is both dairy and gluten free.
We have chosen a combination of deeply
nourishing ingredients in our fragrant
Chicken, Almond and Apricot Tagine,
making it a perfect dish for this time of
year. The warming spices have both antiinflammatory
and antioxidant benefits,
with the apricots and raisins providing both
natural sweetness and a rich source of fibre.
Garlic and ginger are helpful natural
anti-microbials to help support immune
health and we love using homemade chicken
stock where possible for its benefits for
digestive health. The almonds add a helpful
protein hit as well as adding depth and a
creaminess to the dish so it feels substantial
and indulgent. This recipe works brilliantly
for both younger family members as well as
for a grown-up dinner party too. We hope
you enjoy it as much as our families do.
IMMUNE BOOSTING
CHICKEN, ALMOND
& APRICOT TAGINE
RECIPE
SERVES 4
INGREDIENTS
400g left over roasted chicken or 2 chicken
breasts cut into mouthful chunks
½ tsp turmeric
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1½ tsp ground cumin
80g ground almonds
80g dried apricots (chopped or whole
depending on your family ages)
60g raisins
500ml chicken stock
(preferably homemade)
1 small white onion, sliced
1 clove garlic, pasted
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Start off by sweating the onions
gently in a large frying pan until
softened and translucent.
2. Next add your garlic paste and spices
and cook out for about 20 seconds,
making sure not to burn either.
3. Add your roasted chicken to the pan and
mix together. If you are using chicken
breasts, simply remove the onions and
spice mix and pan fry your chicken pieces
to colour and cook them all the way
through. Then add the onions and spices
back to the pan and mix all together.
4. Next add ¾ of the chicken
stock into the pan.
5. Sprinkle in the ground almonds and you
will see the dish transform and thicken.
Add the rest of the stock to loosen, along
side adding the raisins and dried apricots.
6. Taste and season if necessary. If too
thick just add a splash more water.
7. Enjoy with either a bowl of fluffy
brown rice or roasted sweet potato.
HEALTH
IN TWO
HALVES
Dr Stephen Adams-Langley,
Senior Clinical Consultant
at a Place2Be, discusses the
pressures of growing up.
Our lives are constantly shaped by our
physical and mental health. Moreover,
the two affect one another – stress
may cause physical illness and vice versa.
Diet, exercise, sleep, time with friends
and relaxation are good for the body and
mind. Improving your physical health by
swimming or playing rugby in the park
can make you feel happy. Feeling happy
when you listen to music or bake can relieve
tension in your body. Yet communicating
this to our children, especially in today’s
busy world where young people face so
many pressures, can be challenging.
It’s important to teach our children (and
remind ourselves) that health encompasses
all the ways we look after ourselves.
Nearly two thirds of 10-12 year olds in
a Place2Be’s recent survey worry “all the
time” about at least one thing to do with
school, home or themselves, which is
hardly surprising given the pressure to excel
academically and flourish socially, both
online and offline. Moreover, we know how
easily our pressures – work, relationships,
finances – can filter down to them.
Yet while supporting their mental health
sounds far more demanding than keeping
them physically active, many of the best
techniques are familiar and easy to slot
into everyday life. Finding a shared hobby,
encouraging independent interests, setting
aside time for unstructured play, supporting
them with school work, acknowledging
their positive and negative feelings and
picking the right unpressurised moment to
do so – can all help. Equally, parents need
to make sure that they carve out some time
for themselves by having regular nights off.
The more we look at physical and
mental health as two halves of a whole,
the better equipped our children will be to
deal with the pressures of growing up.
Place2Be is the UK's leading children's
mental health charity providing in-school
support and expert training to improve the
emotional wellbeing of pupils, families,
teachers and school staff. Our work
enhances the wellbeing and prospects of
children and their families by providing
access to therapeutic and emotional
support in schools, using a proven model
backed up by research and training.
