I’m not old i’m
Check out my very
own fashion website
imnotoldimretro.co.uk
Well hello there! I’m back with my monthly column… Ok so firstly a reminder
about me. I’m Zena (Zee for short) I’m 43, a mother and a grandmother.
Oh hello April and hello
you! April is a good
month for me as it’s my
Birthday!
I shall be 44 no less!
Dressing for women over
forty has never been
better. There is so much
out there no matter what
your style is.
This month my favourite
new find is JOANIE
Clothing. I’m totally in
love with their slogan
tops.
If like me you can’t stretch to $280
for a Bella Fraud slogan jumper then
take a look.
I’ve also had a good shop
around for some key pieces
that are really on trend for
this spring. Gingham isn’t
going anywhere soon, and
pastels are still so very
Spring. But my top item
this month is DUNGREES!
Yes that’s right. They’re not
just for pregnant ladies
or painters! Take some
inspiration
from these
examples and
of course I can
often be found
rocking a pair
of denims!
Being over forty, can make you
become more aware of your
skin and more inclined to try out
different skin care ranges.
Fear not ladies (and gents,) I have
found the holy grail of skin care!
The Body Shop has a new range
called “drops of youth,” I’m a
seasoned professional when it comes to
trying out new products and this blew
me away.
The ladies are so helpful and friend in
the Bury St Edmunds store, take a look
and purchase the skincare system. You
can thank me later!
Finally I’ve always been fond of a
good Mac and there are some lovely
variations of the classic.
My top finds are Marks and Spencer,
Tesco F and F range and Zara.
I will have more outfit inspiration over
on my blog as well as more skincare
advice.
I’d like to end by dedicating this months
column to my amazing grandmother
Elsie Lillian Fell, she was one of the
most glamorous women I’ve ever know.
Stationery & Favour Ideas
BY CATHERINE STARLING-GUNFIELD
As a wedding stationer
with nearly 10 years’
experience I have seen
most ideas and creative
touches. In my opinion
wedding stationery falls
into two categories, the
‘Must Haves’ and the
‘Splurges’.
The ‘Must Haves’ are
invitations, table plan, place
settings, table numbers and
order of service (religious
ceremony) and some form of
guest book.
The ‘splurges’ are items not needed necessarily but can add
that personal touch and include, Save the dates, information
packs, RSVP cards, menu cards, post box, order of ceremony
and favours.
Save the dates are great for those having midweek or high
season weddings, this allows guests to plan holidays or time off
work, usually sent 9-12 months before the big day.
Invitation info packs and RSVP’s are a great way to provide your
guests with all the information they need, directions, hotels,
taxi’s etc, and they can eliminate too many calls and questions
from guests.
Menu cards are a nice touch providing guests with details of the
food they are enjoying and accompanying wine.
Post Boxes are a great place for guests to pop cards, money
and vouchers upon arrival and safely.
Order of ceremony, usually consists of a list of the bridal party,
music, readings and order of the day with rough timings, a
lovely keepsake.
WEDDING
APRIL 2017 APRIL | 2017 ISSUE | ISSUE #54 | #54 WEDDING
Favours are small gifts given to
guests and I have seen many
ideas over the years, below are
some I have come across; Sugared
almonds representing Fertility,
Longevity, Wealth, Health and
Happiness.
Food is a great choice: Pop cakes,
gingerbread, biscuits, cupcakes,
macaroons, wrapped in cellophane
or clear boxes perhaps double
them as place settings with cute
tags.
Give to your favourite charity,
making a donation and giving pin
badges.
Lottery tickets and scratch cards;
I’ve been commissioned to make
quite a few cute wallets in the
past, they could also house drinks
tokens and casino tokens.
Perhaps lay on a treat so everyone
can help themselves; candy buffet,
photo booth, flip flops for the
ladies, chocolate fountain, DJ/
dance floor props and glow sticks.
Have fun choosing your stationery
and favours, they will provide
some lovely keepsakes from your
big day.
The Milsom
Wedding Show...
Last month I popped
along to The Milsom
Wedding Show to
get some ideas for
my own big day...
I haven’t been to many
wedding shows (this was my
second), so I was eager to find
out what was in store... I wasn’t
disappointed.
Upon arrival my partner Sam
and I were greeted by the
Milsoms team with a goody
bag full of information to help
us on our wedding quest.
After a browse around the
exhibitor’s circuit, (with a
complimentary glass of fizz),
we enjoyed talking to suppliers
about honeymoons, wedding
dresses, cakes and even
photo booths, (check out our
souvenir from the day)!
The venue itself was at The
Hanger, at Milsoms Kesgrave
Hall, but also on offer from
Milsoms is the stunning venue
at Le Talbooth, in Dedham, where you can even arrive
at your wedding venue up the river on
a boat.
To keep my partner happy, as they
always say the way to a man’s heart
is through his stomach, there were
canapés circulating the floor, plus there
was even a ‘men’s den’ full of casino
tables, cocktail samples and grooms
attire, which was a lovely to touch.
I lost Sam there whilst I enjoyed a
complimentary manicure from The
Treatment Rooms at Maison Talbooth
and found out all about Milsoms Hen Packages at
Maison Talbooth! Yes girls, that’s what I’m talking
about!
APRIL APRIL 2017 | 2017 ISSUE | ISSUE #54 | #54 WEDDING
BY KIRSTY WOOLNOUGH
BRIDE TO BE
Hair and Make-Up Advice
PART2
Following last month’s column, Kirsty Woolnough, wedding hair
stylist and beauty expert, shares here expert advice on what to do to
prepare on the build up and during your wedding day.
The Day Before...
On the day before your wedding,
when washing your hair, make
sure you thoroughly shampoo
and use the tiniest amount of
conditioner on your ends. My
worst challenge is slippery hair
that won’t hold!
When drying your hair (or letting it dry naturally), make
sure it’s not combed or brushed into a specific parting! Hair
sets in place from wet to dry so it’s very hard as a stylist to
manipulate hair in a different direction once set. Brushing
your hair back and not applying a parting is usually a safe
option, unless asked otherwise.
With all this preparation in mind you should be set to
achieve the look you have dreamed of!
WEDDING
APRIL APRIL 2017 2017 | ISSUE | ISSUE #54 #54 | WEDDING
On The Big Day...
Firstly, it’s important the atmosphere is as
calm and happy as possible!
Get some music on as its sets the mood!
Obviously you will want your loved ones
around, but from experience, it’s best to keep
guests to a minimum and wow at that grand
reveal!
If you have too many people in a bridal suite
at the venue it can feel manic, stressful -
especially when you have all the professionals
in one room too, including a photographer, a
videographer, stylist and make-up artist!
I usually organize an itinerary with the bride
as to who has what done, when, so everyone
in the bridal party knows where they will fit in.
Hiring a professional isn’t for everyone, but
when you choose to include this service into
your day, your stylist can build not only a
professional relationship, but a personal one
too, this is why it’s so important to feel a
rapport with them.
joy, but what ever the situation
I’m always there to share the load and provide
the Kleenex tissue!
May these tips be helpful to making the
preparation and running of your special day
run smoothly. Good luck!
They will share with you your most dearest
memories and intimate moments from
exchanging and receiving gifts and card
between bride and groom, the first sighting
of your bouquet, and not to mention that
moment your father/mother or special person
that may give you away sees you for the first
time!
There will be tears of laughter, feelings of
sadness for lost loved ones and happiness and
THE JACKSONS...
The Jockey Club Live are excited to announce the next act to join the
Newmarket Nights season – Mowtown legends THE JACKSONS.
The Jacksons, originally formed as The
Jackson 5, will be visiting Newmarket as they
celebrate an incredible 50 hit-making years.
Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael,
five brothers from Gary, Indiana, known
originally as the Jackson 5 and later The
Jacksons, rose to fame for their combination
of extraordinary musical talent and
spectacular choreography.
In 1976, the group, except for Jermaine, left
Motown for Epic Records where, they
added their brother Randy and changed their
name to The Jacksons. They released
five albums between 1976 and 1981, including
the hit albums, Destiny (1978) and Triumph
(1980) from which they produced the smash
singles, “Enjoy Yourself”, “Shake Your Body
(Down to the Ground)” and “Can You
Feel It.”
They soon earned the
status of pop royalty in the
music world, providing the
launching pad for what
would become Michael
Jackson’s legendary
solo career.
Known for hits including ‘ABC’,
‘The Love You Save’, ‘I Want You Back’ and
‘I’ll Be There’, the group sold more than 200
million records during their time with the
legendary Motown label.
Building a reputation for their combination
of music and brilliant choreography, they
went on to score 17 Top 40 singles on the Hot
100 – together with 22 UK Top 40 singles –
including Never Can Say Goodbye, Show You
The Way To Go and Dancing Machine.
In 1983, the band, along
with Jermaine performed
on Motown 25: Yesterday,
Today, Forever and
subsequently released the
Victory album the following
year. When the brothers
united for The Victory Tour in
1984, it became the highestgrossing
concert series ever staged in the
United States.
Tito Jackson said:
‘We had the privilege of performing for Her
Majesty The Queen when we first came to the
UK in 1972 and we’re always excited to return.
The British audiences love their music and we
can’t wait to share ours with them when we
bring our show to Newmarket Racecourse this
summer!’
Amy Starkey, Regional Director East of Jockey Club
Racecourses, said:
‘We can’t wait to welcome The Jacksons to Newmarket
Nights for the first time this summer. With The Jacksons’
celebrating their 50th anniversary year, we’re delighted to
be sharing their celebrations with them and am sure they’ll
be performing a set to remember, packed full of some of
their biggest hits.’
The Jockey Club Live are leading promoters on the UK
live scene, delivering spectacular line-ups of some of the
hottest chart talent and legendary household names to
some of the world’s most famous racecourses. The events
are renowned for combining a fun filled evening at the
races with a spectacular evening concert in the informal
and relaxed open-air setting of the hallowed turf.
The group can be said to find many of its music
inspirations in groups like The Temptations, The Supremes,
James Brown and Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers and, in
turn, came to eventually serve as the inspiration for several
generations of boy bands, including Backstreet Boys, New
Edition, N*SYNC, New Kids on the Block, and of more
recent vintage, the Jonas Brothers, One Direction, and
many more.
In 1980, The Jacksons were honoured with a star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame. They were inducted into The
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Vocal Group
Hall of Fame in 1999 as The Jackson 5. Listed among The
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s “500 Songs that Shaped Rock
and Roll” are two of the group’s songs “I Want You Back”
and “ABC”. At the annual BMI Urban Awards on September
8, 2008, The Jacksons were honoured as BMI Icons. In
2016, “ABC” joined “I Want You Back” as the group’s
second recording to be inducted into the Recording
Academy’s Grammy Hall of Fame.
Having welcomed over 200,000 fans of live music to their
events in 2016, this year is set to continue the incredible
success. The Jockey Club venues welcome over 2million
people a year for some of the UKs biggest racing events so
you can be sure a fantastic evening.
DECORATE YOUR HOME
Our interiors are made up of layers,
and paint is perhaps the easiest of
them all to change, with relative
ease and little cost.
Colour on our walls along with new textiles
come together to give a room an entirely new
look without necessarily needing to replace
furniture. At Neptune, one of our favourite
times to redecorate our homes is at the turn
of a new season. Be it one room, two, or
even just your front door, you can completely
rethink a space in as little time as one weekend
afternoon, ready to welcome in and savour the
season.
In SS17, the colour on everybody’s lips is green.
As part of our new collection, we’ve blended
a new shade of green – Sage – that sits
beautifully with our softer white, Snow, or with
our deeper green, Cactus. It works wonders
on walls or, why not sand back any existing
Neptune timber furniture and paint it anew?
SUNSHINE AND SHOWERS
BY KATE LINES
Kates Top Tip : Take cuttings of your
favourite conifers.
Spring is finally in evidence as
daffodils and flowering trees start
to bloom.
Expect the inevitable April showers this month
but with sunny days too, when you can turn your
attention to the lawn.
It’s an exciting month, with indoor-sown seeds
well into growth, and it’s also time to start sowing
outdoors. Just watch out for frosts...
Deadhead daffodils and narcissi; give them a liquid
feed or a sprinkling of bonemeal and then let them
die down. Don’t cut off the leaves as they are
necessary to replenish the bulb for next year.
Keep deadheading spring bedding to keep it looking
neat, and to encourage new flowers.
Now the soil is warming up and things are starting to
grow, add general purpose fertiliser before covering
with mulch especially in borders, the fruit and
vegetable patch and containers.
Carry on removing moss and weeds from paths,
terraces and drives.
Make new beds and borders - mark the shape with
sand trickled from a bottle, remove the top layer
of growing vegetation and dig the ground over,
incorporating as much organic matter as possible. If
you are making a bed in the lawn, remove the turf – if
you dig it in the buried grass will regrow.
Spring means re-birth a great time
to do a spring clean leaving your
home, elegant and beautiful. Now is
time to check your soft furnishings!
The first step to welcome in spring is to get the
paintbrushes out. Choose pale hues like pale
pinks, pastel greens and yellows mixed with
creams, whites and pale greys.
Feature walls are still a big interior must; choose
designs with a botanical or floral theme with
slightly stronger colours to compliment those soft
wall colours.
Don’t forget to make a feature of your windows.
We recommend the use of some of the stunning
fabrics that have been launched this year so
far from design houses like Osborne & Little ,
Sanderson, Designers Guild etc.
APRIL APRIL 2017 2017 | ISSUE | ISSUE #54 #54 | EASTER
Where did it come from?
All about Easter
Chocolate, coloured eggs, cute little
bunnies. These fun activities are
just some of the things that usually
come to mind when we think of
Easter, but there’s more! These
things aren’t really the reason we
celebrate Easter every year.
Why do we celebrate Easter?
Christians celebrate Easter for entirely
different reasons than most people do. The
New Testament states that the resurrection of
Jesus, which Easter celebrates, is a foundation
of the Christian faith. The resurrection
established Jesus as the powerful Son of God
and is cited as proof that God will judge the
world in righteousness.
Why do they call it Easter?
The exact origins of this religious feast day’s
name are unknown. Some sources claim the
word Easter is derived from Eostre, a Teutonic
goddess of spring and fertility.
Why is it important for Christians to
celebrate Easter?
Easter Sunday is the culmination of Holy
Week. It commemorates the resurrection
of Jesus. It is the most important Christian
festival, and the one celebrated with joy.
Why do we get Easter eggs?
The custom of giving eggs at Easter
celebrates new life. Christians remember that
Jesus, after dying on the cross, rose from the
dead. This miracle showed that life could win
over death. For Christians the egg is a symbol
of Jesus’ resurrection, as when they are
cracked open they stand for the empty tomb.
What does the rabbit have to do with
Easter?
The story of the Easter Bunny is thought to
have become common in the 19th century.
Rabbits usually give birth to a big litter of
babies (called kittens), so they became a
symbol of new life. Legend has it that the
Easter bunny lays, decorates and hides eggs
as they are also a symbol of new life.
What happened on the days of Easter?
Easter Sunday, also known as Resurrection
Sunday, is a Christian festival, celebrating the
resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
which happened on the third day after his
crucifixion by the Romans. The week previous
to this is known as the Holy Week, and it
contains Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and
Holy Saturday.
So when you find yourself indulging in Easter
Eggs, surrounded by Easter Bunnies, now
you know where it all came from.
hour of exercise every day . Eating well and
keeping active are the health gifts that keep
on giving. If you get into these habits now, the
benefits will last a lifetime.
2. Work on your relationship - with your
doctor, that is...
Get to know your doctor and let your doctor
get to know you. Things to ask now are: What
can you do to keep your body and heart
strong? How can you best prevent STIs
(sexually transmitted infections)?
3. Know your family health history...
Does heart disease run in your family?
What about diabetes? These are important
questions to ask your parents and
grandparents while you still can. Why
not construct a family medicalhistory
tree?
4. Don’t forget key screening tests...
Make sure you carry out monthly selfexaminations
for testicular cancer, which is
the most common form of cancer in young
men. Also, talk to your doctor about screening
for high blood pressure, high cholesterol
and diabetes. It’s never too early to start
protecting your heart and circulation.
5. De-stress your life...
Mid-life is often a very stressful time for
many men, with career, financial and family
pressures. And stress is a known risk factor for
cardiovascular disease, which hits men at a
younger age than women.
6. Check your head...
Mental health is really, really important. Think
about several things: Are you drinking too
much? Are you paying attention to signs of
depression or bipolar disorder, which often
get missed? If you have a family history of
mental illness, suicide, and/or substance
abuse, you really need someone to help you
review the signs and symptoms
LOTUS
POSE
(pod-MAHS
-anna)
Benefits
Strengthens the spine
Stretches chest and lungs, shoulders, and
abdomen
Calms the brain
Stimulates the pelvis, spine, abdomen, and
bladder
Stretches the ankles and knees
Eases menstrual discomfort and sciatica
Consistent practice of this pose until late into
pregnancy is said to help ease childbirth.
Cautions:
Ankle injury, Knee injury.
How to try the pose:
1. Sit on the floor with your legs straight in
front. Bend your right knee and bring the
lower leg up into a cradle: The outer edge of
the foot is notched into the crook of the left
elbow, the knee is wedged into the crook of
the right elbow, and the hands are clasped
(if possible) outside the shin. Lift the front
torso toward the inner right leg so the spine
lengthens (and the lower back does not
round). Rock your leg back and forth a few
times, exploring the full range of movement of
the hip joint.
2. Bend the left knee and turn the leg out.
Rock your right leg far out to the right, then
lock the knee tight by pressing the back
of the thigh to the calf. Next swing the leg
across in front of your torso, swiveling from
the hip and not the knee, and nestle the
outside edge of the foot into the inner left
groin. Be sure to bring the right knee as close
to the left as possible, and press the right heel
into the left lower belly. Ideally the sole of the
foot is perpendicular to the floor, not parallel.
3. Now lean back slightly, pick the right leg up
off the floor, and lift the left leg in front of the
right. To do this hold the underside of the left
shin in your hands. Carefully slide the left leg
over the right, snuggling the edge of the left
foot deep into the right groin. Again swivel
into position from the hip joint, pressing the
heel against the lower belly, and arrange the
sole perpendicular to the floor. Draw the
knees as close together as possible. Use the
edges of the feet to press the groins toward
the floor and lift through the top of the
sternum. If you wish, you can place the hands
palms up in jnana mudra, with the thumbs and
first fingers touching.
Beginner’s Tip:
During the cradle warm-up the outer ankle is
often overstretched.
With thanks to www.yogajournal.com/poses.
Please take care in all poses, if unsure please
attend a class or ask for a private lesson.
JEM
MACE
Jem Mace was the first
Heavyweight Champion of the
World, and arguably the greatest
of all Britain’s boxing champions.
Born 8 April 1831 in the village of Beeston, near
Swaffham, he spent the first 26 years of his life in
Norfolk where he worked as a horse dealer and
from time to time put on the gloves in boxing
contests against all-comers. In 1857 Mace and his
wife Mary Ann became the Landlords of the Swan
Inn, Swan Lane, Norwich.
His first fights took place whilst living in Norwich
when he beat John [Slasher] Slack on 2 October
1855 and Bill Thorpe on 17 February 1857, but his
local popularity waned as a result of two fights
which he forfeited against Mike Madden and a
loss to Bob Brettle from Birmingham.
Jem put the record straight against Bob Brettle
who he beat for £200 aside in just 20 minutes
in 11 rounds on September 1860. He then won
the championship of England on 13 June 1861 by
beating reigning champion Sam Hurst for £200 a
side in 8 rounds 40 minutes. On 28 January 1862
he beat Tom King, but lost to him later in the year.
King took a terrible punishment in the match,
announced his retirement and Mace automatically
regained the English championship.
Jem later worked with the Marquis of Queensbury
and helped to introduce new boxing rules
with their requirement of gloved contests.
On 15 September 1869 Mace arrived in New York
intending to give exhibitions, but was enticed
by the American fraternity and, on 10 May 1870,
he beat Tom Allen, the champion of America for
$5000 [$2500 a side] for the championship of
the World. In Kenner, Louisiana a suburb of New
Orleans on the site where the championship fight
took place, there now stands a life-size bronze of
Jem Mace and Tom Allen.
In 1877 Jem arrived in Australia and after giving
exhibitions in New South Wales, he moved to
Melbourne where he managed the VCR Hotel in
Flemington and established a successful boxing
academy.
Mace spent the remaining years of his life giving
exhibitions in Britain and America. In 1890, aged
60 he boxed with Charlie Mitchell in Glasgow and
after four 2 minute rounds Mitchell won at which
time the contest was interrupted by the police.
He returned to Norwich in March 1888 appearing
at the Theatre Royal in a series of exhibitions.
He died on 30 November 1910 and a huge crowd
attended his burial in Liverpool and he was
interred alongside the MacMillan plot in a pauper’s
grave unmarked save for the number 594.
On 31 November 2002. Jem’s remains were given
due respect and moved from plot 594 and laid to
rest alongside the remains of his daughter Amelia,
her husband and three children, in the MacMillan
family plot at Anfield cemetery.
Martine Crepy. Primarily a restaurant, it’s five
boutique bedrooms, of differing sizes, are
comfortably fitted with stylish contemporary
furnishings, juxtaposing original beams and
inglenook fireplaces.
We stayed in a luxurious suite with a four
poster bed, overlooking the village square and
its charmingly crooked buildings.
There’s a complimentary decanter of Sherry
and a Nespresso machine tucked out of the
way in the wardrobe, and a shower room in
the corner. Everything you need for a restful
break away.
After a short rest and a quick change for
dinner, we made our way down to the
restaurant. The dining room is separated in
two so it feels private but not empty.
It’s been called ‘one of the best
restaurants in England’ by The Sunday
Times; has won the 2016 AA Inspectors
Choice Gold awards; is a Sawday’s
British 2015 Food award winner
and one of only two 3 AA rosette
restaurants in Suffolk. Little wonder
– the team recently celebrated 30
years of ownership by head chef-cumcookery-writer
Regis Crepy – with three
decades to refine its offering.
As we ventured into the main
dining area white, crisp tablecloths
hung over evenly spaced tables,
which were completed with
gleaming wine glasses, simply
beckoning us to try some of the
French wine on offer, all with the
added touch of candlelight, creating
a warm and romantic ambience.
Shortly after taking our seats to our surprise,
a selection of amuse-bouche’s arrived along
with a freshly cooked bread, (with the most
scrumptious butter).
Last month, Bounce Magazine were delighted
to be invited along for dinner, bed and
breakfast, here is what we thought.
‘The building dates back to the 14 th and 15 th
centuries, built by a wealthy family. Since
1985 it has been owned by Regis and
The serving staff were friendly well-trained,
attentive and efficient, in fact we left it
down to them to select a wine which would
accompany our dishes.
The menu is mostly classical in style, and our
well-paced meal began. To start, I opted for
the ‘Isle of Man half shell Queen Scallops -
Baked Baby Scallops, Buffalo Mozzarella
Cheese, Fennel and Leek Concassé with a
Hazelnut Butter Sauce’. It was incredibly
flavoursome with a hint of fennel running
through the dish balanced by creamy
mozzarella and rich butter sauce. One of my
favourite starters to date, I have to confess!
My partner chose the ‘Home Smoked Trout
Fillet, Red Beetroot, Dill Caviar, Pickled
Radishes, Glazed Baby Beetroot and Ginger
Emulsion’. It was served like a piece of artwork
you didn’t want to see destroyed. The trout
was a great consistency whilst the other
flavours balanced the dish to complete It.
Following the starter, I selected the ‘Flat iron
“Red Pool” Beef with “Le Puy” Letils Cream,
Parsely Espuma and a Black peppercorn
Sauce’. The beef simply melted in my mouth
and was simply delicious, just thinking about
it now makes my mouth water all over again!
My partner selected the ‘Shimpling Park Farm
Lamb Cutlet with Rocket Salad Gel, Garlic
Cream and Lamb Jus Reduction’. I am not
a huge Lamb fan, but he commented it was
packed full of flavour, tender to eat.
It would have been rude to dine in
a French Restaurant without trying
the cheese selection!
We selected the milder range of cheeses,
straight from the cheese trolley, which came
complete with grapes, crackers and bread.
Paired with an amazing, full-bodied French
red wine, I can see now why people love a
cheese course!
Then, finally onto dessert. I selected
something a little different to what I
normally would and selected the ‘Pinapple
and Chocolate, with Vanilla Gluten Free
Sponge Cake and Tonka Bean and Vanilla
Sorbet’. It really didn’t last long! The best
part, of this dish was the fruity Pineapple,
which cleansed the palette and gave my
mouth a sweet hit at the same time.
Overall, we loved our stay at The Great House,
Regis team were very welcoming and we
certainly can’t wait to visit again in the near
future’.
My chocoholic partner could only have
selected the ‘Chocolate Marquise; Dark
Chocolate Praline Gateau and Speculoos Ice
Cream’. Doesn’t that sound impressive! The
image below speaks for itself I think!
The Wines
of Provence
Provence lies in the south east of France. The name ‘Provence ‘
comes from the Romans calling it ‘Our Provence’ (Provincia Nostra)
and French traditional grape varieties.
Today it is mostly famous for Rosé wines but it
also has full bodied spicy red wine as well as some
good quality white.
BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER
It stretches from Avignon to Nice and wine has
been made here for about 2600 years, ever since
the Ancient Greeks founded Marseilles in 600
BC. Archaeological evidence proves this and
fragmented Amphorae, the Roman earthenware
wine containers, have been found in the area. The
Romans arrived in 125 BC leading to higher quality
wine being produced.
Many winemakers have influenced the area,
Ancient Greeks, Romans and Italians, who brought
many new varieties with them and also Spanish
The Phylloxera bug arrived towards the end of the
19th Century and to recover their economy after
this, they planted the high yielding low quality
Carignan grape. During the 20th Century the area
became popular with tourists, and it was found
that cheap Rosé wines were popular.
Climate and Geography
Provence has a classic Mediterranean climate with
mild winters and warm hot summers. It is very
sunny with about 3000 hours per year. There is a
danger of grapes becoming too ripe too quickly
but some protection is provided by the Mistral
68

FOOD & DRINK
APRIL 2017 APRIL | ISSUE 2017 #54 | ISSUE | FOOD #54 & DRINK
wind from the north and proximity to the sea.
Vineyards facing north need grape varieties that
can cope with the cooler climate, while those
facing south, receiving the most sunshine, require
grapes that can survive the heat.
Soils vary, some are composed of shale and
others of limestone. Some coastal areas have
schist and quartz, while others more inland, have
clay and sandstone.
Regions
There are 8 main regions with AOC classification.
Cotes de Provence the largest followed by
Coteaux D’Aix en Provence.
Other important areas consist of Cassis,
Bandol, Cote Varais and Bellet.
Cote de Provence AOC
75% of all Provence wine
comes from here and covers
85 communes. It stretches
from the Southern Rhone to
Saint-Tropez. Rosé accounts for
about 75% of the production but
red wine, about 15%, is becoming
increasingly popular and white,
about 5%, gaining popularity too. Whilst
the Carignan Grape was the most common there
are now numerous others being used. These
include the Grenache, Cinsault and Mourvedre.
These are from the Rhone Valley and account
for about 60% of production. New generations
of winemakers are incorporating new methods
including the use of oak and temperature
controlled fermentation
Much of the Rosé is still sold in the Amphorae
bottle shapes, much loved by the Romans.
Coteaux D’Aix en Provence
This area is concentrated to the west and north
west of Provence and includes the town of Aixen-Provence.
60% red wine, 35% Rosé and 5%
white wines are produced here. The major grapes
for the red are Grenache, Cinsault and Mourvedre
but now includes the Cabernet Sauvignon,
cuttings of which come from Bordeaux. White
grapes include Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache
Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and
Semillon.
Bandol
Located near Marseilles and Cassis and west of
Toulon. Silicon and limestone soils and the warm
coastal climate work magic for the Mourvedre
grape. While Grenache and Cinsault usually
add to the blend, Syrah and Carignan are
restricted.
Red Bandol is a rich, dark and highly
flavoured wine which usually
requires 10 years ageing before
tackling. It has 18 months in oak.
White and Rosé wines are also
produced in the area.
Cassis
Not to be confused with the Blackcurrant
liqueur, also called Cassis, this area lies between
Marseilles and Bandol. 75% production is white
from Clairette, Marsanne, Sauvignon Blanc and
Ugni Blanc ( the grape used in cognac).
Bellet AOC
North of and near Nice this small region has a
significant Italian influence with the Vermentino
grape. It produces Red , white and Rosé wines.
Grapes include Chardonnay, Clairette, Muscat and
Roussanne.
Conclusions...
From the vast quantity of Rosé produced it is worth comparing Provence Rosé with Tavel a Rosé
from The Rhone Valley. Compare also red Bandol with it’s Mourvedre grape with a New World
Mourvedre wine. The contrast should be very interesting. Often the name Mourvedre is on the label.
Celebrate Easter...
Speckled egg chocolates sit on the bottom
of this blackberry-flavored drink, making
it a unique and festive cocktail for
Easter.
Method
1. To assemble the mimosas, place three
speckled eggs in the bottom of each glass.
2. Top each glass with about 2 ounces (or
one shot) of blackberry simple syrup.
3. Fill the remaining portion of the glass
with champagne and then top with edible
flowers!
Ingredients
• 1/2 cup sugar
• 2 cup water
• 8 blackberries
• 1 bottle of champagne
• 1 bag of speckled egg chocolates
• 1 handful of edible flowers
for garnish
TIP: You can create your blackberry simple syrup
up to 5 days prior to using, so no need to wait
until the big day when you have a dozen other
things on your to-do list.
Bring the water to a boil and add sugar. As soon
as the sugar has begun to dissolve, add the black
berries and muddle to break them up and release
the colour.
Shaken Udder...
THE NEW MILKSHAKE IN TOWN
Based in Essex, owners of Shaken
Udder Jodie and Howie met
at agricultural university, both
sharing a passion for music and
outdoor life.
Whilst dancing away at V Festival,
Howie had a sudden craving for
milkshake.
He visualized a funky cow, loads of fresh
fruit, chucks of chocolate and lashings
of fresh milk.
Shortly after, Howie called Jodie and
told her about his idea. Soon after they
found themselves in the kitchen, with a
blender and 100’s of ingredients.
Hours later, full but smiling, the pair had
a list of fab flavours and a company
name.
The Bounce Magazine team were sent
a few samples, not only were the health
benefits really positive but we enjoyed
all of the delicious flavours.
WHAT’S
your number?
Fruit & Veg that is… I like to
think I eat relatively healthy,
and manage to stay on top of
my five a day.
BY RUBY REED
But then the news
broke that we
should be having
closer to 10 portions
of fruit and veg
daily… wait what?
Don’t get me wrong I like my
vegetables. But even for a
vegetable lover this new figure
seems hard to hit!
Doing the simple maths, even if I
have 3 for breakfast, 3 for lunch
and 3 for dinner- I’m still short!
Well, let’s think of a few ideas to
help fit in as many portions as
possible throughout our day.
For breakfast try having a glass of fruit juice/smoothie (this
could contain more than one portion).
Then whatever you would normally have, with a handful of
grapes or maybe an apple to go? That’s at least 2 down.
Now for your morning snack, pack that banana or what
about some carrot sticks with hummus?
Lunch time is a chance to get ahead. If you buy your lunch
daily, look out for the ready-made lunch pots and salads
that proudly display they contain 2 of your 5 a day. That
could be 5 portions by lunch! If you’d rather stick to your
trusty sandwich for lunch don’t skimp on the salad inside!
Take a leaf out of Subways book- lettuce, sweetcorn, onionthe
works. By the way, Subway do offer a good salad!
If you tend to have a side at lunch, there are lots of fruit
bars available, or how about a handful of raisins. You could
76

APRIL 2017 APRIL | 2017 ISSUE | #54 ISSUE | #54 LIFESTYLE
even have prepared a small
fruit salad (remember to add
some lemon juice to your
sliced fruit to keep them fresh
until lunch!) another way of
boosting your portion count.
One way of packing a lot of
portions into one sitting is
soup. You can pick a healthy
one up from most places but
you could also try homemade.
Morphy Richards currently do
a soup maker, which is a new
obsession of mine.
Making at home means trying
out any recipe you fancy. Your
soups can be ridiculously
healthy and quickly bring up
your portion count.
It’s up to you how many
carrots you blend! Look online for recipe
ideas. The choice is endless; potato and leek,
beetroot and onion, pea and ham. You could
add lentils too. Best invest in your soup carrier
now! 7 down?
Lastly, dinner time meals are easy to add
vegetable portions to. Whether you fancy
a side of mushrooms or side salad, there’s
something to go with every meal. Options
that are very easy to throw lots of vegetables
in the mix are stir fry’s and stews.
You could also try replacing some of your
staple ingredients such as spaghetti with
vegetable noodles. Carrots, courgettes or
anything else you want to try can be made
using a spiralizer- or straight noodles with an
ordinary peeler.
Dessert - Fruit & meringue? Ooh apple
crumble has got to count too.
So yes, I guess it is possible to hit the target
of 10, but probably not something we manage
every time! However hopefully some of those
ideas can form new habits for us.
THE PHANTOM OF THE
photograph...
Charlotte James Photography - Exist in Photos...
Mum walks to the top of the stairs
and to the airing cupboard. She
reaches to the back of one of the
shelves and pulls an old tattered
shoebox from the back.
Bringing it down to the living room she
opens the lid to what seems like hundreds of
Polaroid’s and prints of family, us as children,
holidays, weddings and birthdays.
The room lights up, full of smiles. Each of us taking
turns to recall the memories each photograph was
bringing back. Yet after a few moments, smiles
slowly dropped. Our eyes canvassed each image,
looking in more detail…something was missing.
No, not something… some one!. Mother.
All those happy memories and glimpses of the
past were all being captured with Mum being
on the other side of the lens. Shying away from
having her own image taken, simply saying, “ No
no, I’m not very photogenic” which soon led to her
no longer being asked.
The result? This amazing lady now missing, a
phantom if you will, from each photograph of
our life events together. With Mother’s day still
fresh in our minds, reminding us each year just
how important this special lady is in our lives. Be
sure this Easter to grab a camera phone, a point
and shoot or Polaroid camera and capture each
smile, each laugh and each happy tear. So that
the incredible lady you know and love, can be
remembered by
future generations
for many years to
come.
One day your
family will
look back for
photographs and
memories of your
time together…
What will they find?
Hayseed
Dixie
We interview lead singer, John Wheeler, about the
band’s new album out April 14 th 2017.
82

APRIL 2017 | ISSUE #54
INTERVIEW WITH JOHN WHEELER
Hayseed Dixie began one day in 2000 when John Wheeler and Mike Daly
drank roughly enough whiskey to float a battleship from the Florida Coast
over to Portugal and back and decided to play around in John’s studio.
Now, 17 years and 14 albums later, with global
physical sales in excess of half a million and
over 1,200 live shows in 31 different countries
under their belts, Hayseed Dixie are the
undisputed creators of the musical genre,
Rockgrass.
There are many copycats,
converts, and disciples out
there. Accept no imitations.
Free Your Mind And
Your Grass Will Follow’ is
released worldwide on
April 14 th on Hayseed Dixie
Records.
You’re style of music has
been called Rockgrass,
can you explain that to us?
Talking about music is rather like dancing
about architecture, but instead of trying to
explain to somebody what kind of music we
play, the term was coined. Probably very
late at night. I can’t honestly remember. But
I do remember saying it on a radio show in
Birmingham, Alabama in 2001 and it’s been
in circulation ever since. I reckon we think of
ourselves as a rock band playing on bluegrass
instruments, as opposed to a bluegrass band
playing rock material. There’s a fundamental
difference. But neither one will likely fix the
pot holes in the road!
Having played well over 1000 shows across
the world, is there anything youve learned
that needs to be passed
onto our readers?
Oh... That would take several
volumes! But I think the
most important things I’’ve
learned is that once you
get past language barriers,
people are pretty much the
same everywhere you go.
Everybody feels the same
emotions, the same fears,
desires, hopes. And that
most of the differences we’re taught to think
are national, cultural, ethnic, whatever... are
artificial. Somebody is just making all this s**t
up.
What has been the most unusual place you
have played?
There have been a few! A huge cave with 600
people under a mountain in East Tennessee
was a pretty interesting one. On the castle
mound for the 2005 Edinburgh Hogmanay
For more information go to www.hayseed-dixie.com
83

APRIL 2017 | ISSUE #54
was another unusual place for a band like us.
Hell, singing harmony with Joss Stone, William
Bell, Ronnie Spector, Paloma Faith, and Boz
Scaggs while Jools Holland played piano
and sang “Hit the Road, Jack” on the 2015
Hootenanny show was pretty surreal.
14 albums, festival appearances, opening the
Glastonbury main stage, Top Of The Pops
and Jools Holland’s Hootenanny what gives
you the motivation to keep going?
I’m 47. After doing music with an allconsuming,
bloody-minded obsessive passion
for about 40 of those 47 years, and doing
Hayseed Dixie for 17 of those years, it’s a
bit too late to reasonably consider doing
anything else really. I wouldn’t want to either.
And I’m sincerely appreciative that there are
enough people out there who want to hire us
to entertain them buying tickets to the shows
and records and such that I can make a living
doing this. Because otherwise, I’d probably
go do something really destructive... like
inventing a more refined version of sweetener
than corn syrup, or maybe running for office.
Your new album ‘Free Your Mind and Your
Grass Will Follow’ features a mix of covers
and originals, why did you decide to shake
up the format? How do you choose the
covers you want to do?
Most of our 14 previous albums are mixtures
of original songs and reinterpretations of
known standards, usually based loosely
around a theme. That’s essentially what most
jazz, folk and bluegrass albums are too. This
album is a bit of a departure for the band in
theme more than in design or presentation.
I think it sounds musically very much like we
sound, and have always sounded. If you’ve
always hated Hayseed Dixie, this record is
definitely not going to change your mind.
If you’ve .liked what we’ve done in the past,
you will probably like this record too. But the
theme this time is a bit heavier. The world is
currently a more interesting, uncertain and
transitioning place than it was when the band
started 17 years ago, and as we all live and
84

APRIL 2017 | ISSUE #54
move and think in the context of the world, I
guess the subject matter of the album reflects
that. But we aren’t trying to bash anybody
over the head with a message. It’s there if you
want it and it’s so obvious that I don’t need
to spell it out. But if you just want to dance,
that’s cool too. Music should get to your brain
by way of your gut, not the other way around.
You are playing all over the country and
specifically Norwich and Cambridge, any
past experiences at both towns you can tell
us about?
Norwich is a lovely little city. It reminds me
quite a bit of Nashville, where I’m from, in
vibe, probably because they’re both regional
capitals, markets for farm products and big
insurance towns. It doesn’t look anything like
Nashville, but the attitudes of the people feel
the same to me. I met my wife in Cambridge,
laying at the Cambridge Folks Festival. The
organiser of the festival at the time was
notoriously cheap and he only gave us half the
beer we asked for on the rider (at that time, it
was a case of ale and a case of lager - that’s
all). He only gave us half the beer! So I had to
call for the artist rep... And down she came,
like an angelic Viking incarnation of Jeremy
Paxman’s mind and attitude in the body of
“An American Werewolf in London” era Jenny
Agutur: flaming red hair, clipboard firmly in
hand, big green eyes, Jane Austin accent
and delivery: “Is there a problem?!?” And so
I had to tell HER that if we only got half our
beer they were going to get half a set. Which
I dutifully did. And after some discussion,
which went to and fro and here and there
(you really should’ve been there), we got our
beer. And now I’ve got a wife and 2 lovely
daughters... Which I suppose also answers the
next question.
Hayseed Dixie will be playing
locally on 21st April at The
Junction in Cambridge and on 24th
April at the Waterfront in Norwich.
Clinical Negligence APRIL – 2017 When | ISSUE #54 and how to claim
In these modern times, doctors, nurses and healthcare
professionals can generally be relied upon to provide
an excellent standard of service for their patients.
However, if you, your spouse or child have been
injured, or if tragically you are the dependent or a
child of a patient who has died as a result of medical
treatment, you are entitled to receive an explanation
from your treatment provider.
Where the injury or death has been caused or contributed
to by the breach of a duty of care, you and/or
your child may be entitled to financial compensation
for what is now called ‘clinical negligence’, but which
has in the past been referred as ‘medical negligence’.
Such claims are not just limited to being brought
against the National Health Service. If you have been
treated as a private patient and paid the doctor either
personally or through your private health insurance,
you may also be able to make a claim if your treatment
is found to be below the standard that would normally
be expected.
negligence claim, you must prove through independent
medical expert evidence that firstly there were serious
errors in the medical treatment that you received which
no competent doctor would have made; and that those
errors caused or substantially contributed to the injury
you are complaining of. With the independent
medical expert often being required to put forward
technical medical evidence, for that reason clinical
negligence claims can take longer to pursue, sometimes
lasting for years before even reaching Court should the
medical professional or body in question choose to
oppose the claim.
If you are considering bringing a claim, generally the
first stage would be to submit a letter of complaint to the
proposed defendant. This gives you an opportunity to
put forward your grievances and to consider the
response that they provide. If you then remain
dissatisfied with the response, it may be that you have
a claim for clinical negligence and may be entitled to
compensation for pain, suffering, loss of amenity and
any past or future financial losses.
Shortcomings in standards of care can occur when a
failed or delayed diagnosis is given, there is a failure
to warn of risk in treatment or to obtain proper consent
to treatment, there are errors in medication, when
surgical procedures are carried out carelessly or when
there are delayed referrals to specialists.
There are differences in principles and procedures
when making a claim for clinical negligence rather
than a claim for personal injuries caused by, for
example, a road traffic accident. In the latter, it is more
straightforward to establish whether or not someone
was at fault and whether any injuries were suffered as
a result. However, in order to bring a successful clinical
The Duchess of Cornwall formally unveils statue of King
Charles II at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile Racecourse
Newmarket Racecourses were delighted to welcome
Her Royal Highness The Duchess Of
Cornwall to the Rowley Mile Racecourse
on 22nd March, as part of an official
visit to Newmarket, to formally unveil a
specially commissioned statue of King
Charles II.
The town of Newmarket celebrated a
landmark anniversary of 350 years of
the Home of Horseracing throughout
2016 and is lucky enough to boast
a rich history and heritage, much of
which includes key influences from the
Royal Family over the years, especially during the
reign of King Charles II.
Known as a keen horseman, King Charles II was
pivotal to the establishment and evolution of
Newmarket as the Home of Horseracing, and this
specially commissioned statue was created to mark
and honour his contribution to the Sport of Kings.
200 guests, from the local community
and racing fraternity, witnessed Her
Royal Highness unveiling the King
Charles II statue, with the ceremony
also including two Mounted Dutymen
from the Household Cavalry, as well as
a fanfare from two trumpeters of the
Regiment. Their presence was again
to honour King Charles II, who actually
founded the Household Cavalry in 1660.
Following the unveiling, Her Royal
Highness received Sheikh Fahad Al Thani, the 2016
Sheikh Fahad through QIPCO, and its subsidiary
There is now an unprecedented demand for treatments
This is what I was saying in the 1990’s when I invested in
my first micro-current device from one of the originators
of Micro Current Stimulation in the U.S.A. and it remains
true today.
The original technology is still recognised as highly
believe the patented features of Suzuki Sequencing by
Rosacea Awareness Month at SK...
BY LIANNE ROBINSON
April has been designated as Rosacea
Awareness Month by the National Rosacea
Society (NRS) to raise awareness and
educate the public of the signs of this
serious but treatable skin condition.
Rosacea is a skin condition that is often
misunderstood and misdiagnosed and has been
called ‘the great pretender’ as the early symptoms
can often be confused with acne, mild sensitivity
and even sunburn. Now, however, the condition
is becoming more common so it’s important to
recognise both the signs of its development and
what steps can be taken to help to control it.
SK are hosting a Rosacea Awareness event on
Wednesday 5th April from 5:30pm to 7:30pm - join
us and enjoy a rose wine or green tea with liquorice
sweets, take part in our raffle to win a Pevonia gift
basket of products worth over £100, with further
offers available on the night.
alleviating thermal clay mask, used within
the facial, provides soothing relief and visible
results to dilated capillaries, congestion,
blotchiness, and irritability. Comforting and
healing ingredients such as Rose, Green Tea,
Chamomile and Liquorice combine to properly
decongest and calm your skin for an even,
healthy appearance.
In other news, OPI has launched the New Fiji
Collection – say goodbye to those winter blues
with a splash of colour! The collection features
12 new shades in both Nail Lacquer and Infinite
Shine formulas as well as salon-exclusive Gel
Colours, from sunset orange and yellow hues to
sandy beiges and tonal neutrals and rich ocean
blues - there’s bound to be a shade for every
occasion.
Also throughout the whole of April receive the
Rosacea Facial for £55 and save £10, plus a Free RS2
Cleanser & RS2 Lotion (Trial Size 50ml) when you
buy the RS2 Care Cream (50ml).
SK’s Pevonia Rosacea Facial has proven to be
capable of delivering exceptional results desired
by those suffering from severe sensitivity, broken
capillaries, Rosacea and Acne Rosacea. The
HAIR & BEAUTY
APRIL 2017 | ISSUE #54
At Easter we think of new
beginnings, spring cleaning and
warmer weather.
What better way to spring clean your skin than
with the new range of skin care from Dior.
They are made up of 84% natural products,
paraben free and have 30% less impact on the
environment… just to name a few of the great
components of the new range.
Micellar water now containing soothing
echinacea, is a simple easy way to cleanse and
take off your make-up.
They have reformulated the Hydra Life Serum and
Moisturiser, delivering even better results that
before, hydrating from deep in the skin to the
surface.
I am very excited about the three new masks, the
Jelly Mask; giving instant radiance and energises,
containing fruit acids and exfoliating apricot
kernels.
Pores away Mask, this is gentle pink clay mask
containing rose, clearing the pores, purifying and
refining the skins texture.
Smooth Balm Mask, plumping the skin to refine
lines, with repairing white pine it nourishes and
softens your skin.
All masks are easy to remove, with water/micellar
water or cotton pad.
A good gentle exfoliator is hard to find, but Dior
have done it again with the exfoliating powder,
containing polishing lotus flower. Just mix the
powder with a small amount of water to create a
paste and rinse off.
Of course there are more new products all in the
new range, if you pop to the boots counter to
find out more and which products would be best
suited for you skin.
TOP HAIR &
BEAUTY HACKS
They say mum knows best – and
in terms of hair and beauty, this is
certainly true...
Top tips include following a good skin care
regime, not washing your hair too often and
wearing sunscreen. Others which featured were
drinking lots of water, taking make-up off before
you go to bed and ‘less is more’. These are the
site’s top beauty hacks which we learnt from
mum:
1. PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM UV RAYS
Whilst you may have hated wearing sunscreen
and sun hats in your teen years, protecting your
skin is incredibly important. As well as protecting
you from harmful rays, it also slows downs the
signs of aging. Never leave the house without it.
2. DON’T WASH YOUR HAIR EVERYDAY
Washing your hair too much can cause dandruff
and it can strip your hair of its natural oils.
102

HAIR & BEAUTY
APRIL 2017 APRIL | ISSUE 2017 #54 | ISSUE | HAIR #54& BEAUTY
3. FOLLOW A GOOD SKIN CARE REGIME...
Who else remembers the day your mum bought
you your first ever moisturiser? Taking care of
your skin is a must. From cleansing, exfoliating,
toning and moisturising, it’s important to follow
that routine mum told you all about.
4. DON’T USE TOO MANY PRODUCTS...
Remember wanting to slap on every product you
could get your hands on? If your mum stopped
you, then she was right. Keep it simple is the right
motto when it comes to everyday make up.
5. BLEND FOUNDATION AND CONCEALER...
Ever had a line running across your face from
where your foundation and concealer weren’t
blended properly? We all did growing up. No
doubt mum pointed it out and taught you how to
blend too.
10. DON’T DYE YOUR HAIR TOO EARLY...
One of the most important tips we learnt our
mums, is to avoid dying our hair until absolutely
necessary. Virgin hair is often the key to the
healthiest hair possible. Once you start dying your
hair it’s almost impossible to stop. Growing out
hair dye or highlights takes a long time.
For bookings or advice call
Cabello on 01986 875007 or pop
in and see us at 3 London Road,
Halesworth, IP19 8LH.
6. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER...
Water is the most important thing to get healthy
skin and hair. We all know this, but who was the
first person that told us to drink plenty? Mum of
course.
7. TAKE YOUR MAKEUP OFF BEFORE BED...
Never go to bed with your make up on is number
one in every beauty rule book. And who taught
you that rule?
8. INVEST IN A GOOD FOUNDATION...
If you’re acne-prone or suffer from oily skin, a
good foundation can solve all your problems. We
learnt from our mums that it’s important to invest
in an expensive foundation that can give you
coverage but not encourage your spots.
9. PURCHASE AN EYE CREAM...
As well as moisturiser, an eye cream is a beauty
bag essential. Great if eyes feel a little dehydrated.
APRIL 2017 APRIL | ISSUE 2017 | #54 ISSUE | HAIR #54 & BEAUTY
BY CHARLIE LONG
MY TOP
Make-up artist tricks...
You have probably always wondered how professional
makeup artists work their magic.
No matter how hard we try, our
makeup never turns out the
same. So here are my top 5 tricks
that I use regularly that will help
you achieve makeup like the
professionals.
1.) GET RID OF REDNESS WITH EYE DROPS
Eye drops contain ingredients that constrict
the blood vessels in your eyes alleviating
redness.
The same principle applies to pimples of
redness on the face.
Take a cotton pad and saturate it with
some eye drops and apply it to the specific
area. Within a few minutes, the redness will
disappear.
2.) BRIGHTEN UP YOUR SKIN WITH PEACH
OR APRICOT TONED PRIMERS
Peach and apricot toned primers are
brilliant for brightening up dull and
tired skin, especially for those with
darker complexions.
104 104

HAIR & BEAUTY
APRIL 2017 APRIL | ISSUE 2017 #54 | ISSUE | HAIR #54& BEAUTY
The coloured tone in the primer helps
to correct hyper-pigmentation as
well as counteracting blue/purple toned dark
circles.
3.) USE A BEAUTY BLENDER FOR
FOUNDATION APPLICATION
Every makeup artist owns one; the make-up
sponges shape allows you to access every
contour of your face.
The ideal way to use it is to ensure that
the sponge is damp; this will enable you to
achieve a flawless application.
4.) BLOT AND USE POWDER TO MAKE
LIPSTICK LAST
The key to making lipstick last is to layer.
Begin with lining and filling in your lip with a
liner that matches your lipstick.
5.) USE A LIPSTICK TO CONTOUR
Then apply a light layer of lipstick using a lip
brush.
Take a piece of tissue and blot the colour then
dust a light layer of translucent powder over
the top. Repeat this process 1-2 more times.
Simply try using a brown lipstick
to contour instead of powder or
foundation.
Draw a line use your cheek bones and
buff out with a brush.
The lipstick will leave the skin looking
dewy as opposed to a flat matt finish.
SPORT
owner would realise attendances had been
falling in the thousands and acted. Make tickets
cheaper, get Portman Road full or at least fuller
again. I appreciate this might be a risky strategy
but surely one worth trying.
RIGHT NOW, I’D TAKE MID-TABLE
MEDIOCRITY. IPSWICH TOWN SIMPLY
CAN’T GET RELEGATED...
For a long time now, I have
been apathetic about events
along IP1.
I have reported on too many turgid
matches at Portman Road,
too many 90 minutes of
truly forgettable football
that I care to name.
I love football, always
have, always will. Whether
it is seeing my five-yearold
just simply smiling as
he plays or my nine-yearold
develop with every
passing match.
I love Barcelona
comebacks, Andy Carroll overheads,
Lincoln cup shocks and everything in
between.
But Ipswich Town, my club for nearly 25
years, I had fallen out of love with. Apathy
rather than anger, that was me.
But something has stirred of late.
It started, perversely, with the controversial
ticket increases for next season – despite
not knowing whether we are going to
Cardiff or Charlton next season.
Prior to the announcement, I had hoped
Marcus Evans would see sense, that the
What I didn’t expect was a very different
strategy which appeared to affect the youngest
family, some of Town’s oldest and therefore most
loyal fans and many in between.
It was a spectacular own goal at a time Mick
McCarthy needs all the support he can get.
After two days of deserved social media sniping,
Ipswich took to the field against Cardiff where it
suddenly dawned on me that my club was in a
relegation fight. The odds remain in our favour,
even after a 3-1 defeat to the
Bluebirds, with Ipswich five
points clear and in a pack of
around seven fighting against
one final relegation place.
But form and confidence are
against us and now there is
mutiny on the terraces to go
along with the uncertainty around
the manager. This is quite clearly
a recipe for disaster. And while I
think we will just about be safe,
who can say the same about next season or the
season after that? All of this has got me thinking
– and caring – more about my club. The time for
apathy is over. Ipswich Town simply can’t get
relegated. Because I fear they may not return.
PEDDLE-OH!
SPIN IPSWICH
BY ROSS “ACTION MAN” WISHART
Spinning is a great form of high
intense low impact exercise and
I’ve always been a big fan.
I actually used to ‘Spin’ twice a week however
when my gym closed I struggled to find a
suitable alternative to my regular peddle
powered sweat fest.
Many facilities now only offer a DVD guided
class but there’s usually a diminished level of
effort and motivation from the group when an
unenthusiastic fitness model with a full face of
makeup and painted nails is leisurely cycling
past a CGI background. You’ll get a far better
workout and more enjoyable experience only
when there’s an actual instructor just in front
of you barking instructions and keeping a
close eye on your resistance dial all to the
tune of some deafen drum n bass. (Reading
this back it doesn’t sound so good but trust
me it’s better!)
Fret not, there is an answer, step forward
our regions only spin specific studio in the
shape of the all new Spin Ipswich, located
within the grounds of Gresham sports
centre, Tuddenham Road, Ipswich and I was
honoured to attend their launch night.
The studio is fitted with 20 brand new top of
the range Bodymax B200 indoor cycling bikes
but you don’t need any specialist equipment,
standard gym attire will suffice, do take a
towel because you will sweat and take a
day including early morning, lunch time and
evenings to fit around you working schedule
and the classes do vary with some working on
overall fitness or for those new to spin, there’s
also some high intense and muscle group
specific classes for those more experienced.
The beauty about the exercise of spinning is
that it can tick any and all the boxes for
those looking to add to or kick start their
fitness regimes.
A single spin class can burn up to 500 calories
so it’s ideal for weight loss, it’s also great for
improvements to your cardio vascular health.
Stronger, leaner and more defined legs, core
and glutes also get a big tick. All delivered
via the means of impact free movement
avoiding other joint punishing tarmac
pounding exercises.
The warm and friendly studio, staff and
patrons also deliver a team spirit and
camaraderie that certainly isn’t from
your DVD.
Booking cannot be easier, generate an
account via the website spinipswich.co.uk and
book your classes, arrive 5 minutes early to
give you enough time to set up your bike for
the perfect fit. Then if you fancy something
more sedate then book one of the Pilates
or Yoga classes also available at the studio.
Further details can also be found on the Spin
Ipswich Facebook and instagram feeds.
THEATRE
ROYAL
April opens with Theatre Royal Bury
St Edmund’s very own Youth Theatre
production of Arabian Nights.
This classic tale, with original music, is on our
stage Thursday 6 and Friday 7 April and is a
great way to kick off the Easter holidays.
On Saturday 8 April we welcome the stage
adaptation of Eric Carl’s famous children’s
book The Very Hungry Caterpillar which will
be a huge treat for the kids (and adults) in
the audience.
We then have Noël & Gertie, a love story
which looks at the tempestuous relationship
between two of the 20th Century’s best
loved performers, Noël Coward and Gertrude
Lawrence on Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12.
We have another children’s book adaptation,
Julia Donaldson’s Room on the Broom over
the Easter break on Fri 14 and Sat 15 April.
This has been so popular that we have had
to programme in another show and we now
have a waiting list!
There’s cracking drama in the form of Just
an Ordinary Lawyer on Thursday 20 April.
The story follows Nigerian Tunji Sowande
and discovers how he broke through multiple
barriers to become Britain’s first black judge.
He was also a concert performer and huge
cricket lover.
For anyone who enjoys the music of Frankie
Valli and the Four Seasons we can make
your Friday night with Big Girls Don’t Cry,
celebrating the music of one of America’s top
bands on 21 April.
Adding a slice of spice to your Saturday night
we welcome Tangomotion on Saturday 22
April with their stunning display of traditional
tango dances.
Finishing off a busy April we welcome the
stars of the future when the London Academy
of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) visit
Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds with a double
bill of shows. First up is William Shakespeare’s
As You Like It which will be performed
between Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27
April, followed by Bury Fair by Thomas
Shadwell, specifically chosen to be played in
Bury St Edmunds by LAMDA, this 1689 play
is an affectionate satire of Shadwell’s home
town and will be performed between Friday
28 and Saturday 29 April.
#21
BY JACK STEVENS
MUSIC
This month, I review the new
album ‘Country Sober,’ by local
artist Jay Ducker... (yes, he is the
brother of the editor).
Country Sober’, in its entirety, echoes
what’s fundamentally important about the
art of songwriting. It’s about space.
Minimal arrangements bring a reminder
that music is truly gripping when it’s given
the opportunity to flourish in the lightest
of ways. With tracks like ‘North Sea Blues’
and ‘Wild Life’, it proves that songs should
be structured thoughtfully, with a natural
crescendo. Instruments that fold into each
other’s sound with grace and elegance;
that’s what gives music its emotive quality,
when it captures an organic process like a
building, emotional turmoil.
Vocally, it matches in it’s hereditary
delivery. Ducker’s voice soothes, with
emotion being the intrinsic value.
It washes neatly into the wake of
reverberated sound. Similes in the lyrics
‘like a flower, like a bird’ display a delicate
and transparent image that personifies
Ducker’s approach to songwriting as a
solo artist.
There are certain moments where you can
wince at cliché; the opening line of ‘New
To Me’ (“With my last cigarette / I hold my
gaze towards the moon”) can give you an
inward shudder, in the same way as you
may recall early teenage poetry whilst in
your late twenties. But it comes from an
honest place, an honest voice. And it can
be forgiven.
Influence is hard to draw from this record
(which is a good thing). In parts, it has
the roots of folk and country (perhaps
an obvious observation, with it’s title)
embedded into it’s storytelling. Gods and
Demons emerge in ‘The Day We Threw It
All Away’, with a heart on the sleeve, of a
man wise behind his years, being shown
bare.
Elsewhere, there are traces of electronic
lean, with London Grammar-esque
sequences bleeding into tracks like ‘The
Painter Of The Sky’ and ‘I’m Gonna Lose’.
Without announcement, ‘Geyser’ creeps in
with its gentile post-rock sound, calling to
mind bands like Mogwai or Explosions In
The Sky.
Ultimately, it has the impression of a record
that’s been weaved together from different
periods of this artist’s creative life, who’s
daring enough to draw the songs in an
order that works, despite the cyclone of
different sentiments that inspire each
composition.
When the dust settles, there is space. And
that is what’s fundamentally important
about the art of songwriting. Ducker
achieves that rudimentary principle in a
collection of deep songs.
Archie’s
Adventures
DID ANYONE SEE CRUFTS?...
Last month, we saw the return of
Crufts, the Oscars of the dog world
and the annual showcase for the UK’s
most pampered pooches to show
what they’re made of in front of a
worldwide audience.
I was going to trot along and strut my stuff, but
the sofa sounded a much more comfortable
option to me.
The event this year took place 9th – 12th March
at Birmingham’s NEC with Best In Show, the
most popular event, taking place on the Sunday
afternoon.
As the event celebrates its 126 th year, I wanted
to bring you five lesser-known facts about this
fabulous canine competition.
There really was a Mr Cruft…
Charles Cruft was a dog biscuit salesman before
founding the now infamous dog show in 1886.
It was originally limited to toy dogs and terriers
and then opened up to all breeds five years after
its launch creating the event we know and love
today.
It’s a world record holder...
Crufts was recognised by the Guinness Book of
Records as the world’s largest dog show in 1991
with 27,000 dogs taking part.
There’s a version for mongrels...
Scruffts is the crossbreed version of Crufts that
began in 2000. Titles include: Most Handsome
Dog, Prettiest Bitch, Child’s Best Friend, Golden
Oldie.
Bag yourself a winner...
Statistically speaking, Cocker Spaniels are the
most likely breed to win the Best in Show crown.
And finally…
350kg or 55 stone of dog fur will be cleared from
the NEC after the event!
Might get myself in training for next year’s event,
if I start now you never know.
