fine food fast Mrs Dentons is much more than meets the eye. A café, delicatessen, bakery, takeaway and gift shop, the delicious treats in store are just what we need in the lead-up to Christmas. WOrDS viCtoriA tAit PHOTOGrAPHY ChArlie JACkson Delwyn Denton-Lanauze added a good helping of unique flavour when she took over Pierce’s Bakery 18 months ago, turning the bakery into a café-style delicatessen, known as Mrs Denton’s. With a background in farming and many years spent in the Chatham Islands – where creative cooking skills were a necessity – Delwyn has enjoyed working with food most of her life. She creates seasonal chutneys, pesto and relishes for customers to savour at home, and has produced a tasty new range for Christmas. Thai tomato relish makes for a delicious accompaniment to Christmas Day leftovers, as well as home-made burgers and barbecued meats. A rich raspberry fruit chutney is the perfect addition to picnic hampers. The top of our list, though, is the cherry, beetroot and pinot noir chutney – an ideal partner to antipasto platters and one that will impress your summer guests. You will also be pleased to know Mrs Denton has produced a scrumptious range of Christmas cakes that are offered in a sugar-free and gluten-free variety and are available now. Lasagne, scalloped potato, tortilla stacks and salads are among the extensive range of deli options available for both lunch and dinner. However, it's the range of homemade pies for which Mrs Dentons has become famous. Delwyn has continued to offer Pierce’s popular pie range alongside Lieber Pies made in Fairlie by Austrian chef, Franz Lieber. All six hearty varieties of Lieber pies are hand-filled, completely free of any nasty additives or preservatives, and, in Christchurch, can only be found at Mrs Dentons. On top of delicious pie fillings like salmon and bacon and pork belly with crackle, Delwyn often produces her own creative concoctions that include the unique kangaroo, cheese and blueberry pies. “I often bring back kangaroo from my regular visits to Australia, which I just love. We also make 'boil up' pies with mutton, potato and watercress, which are a big hit with customers.” A talented artist, Delwyn will have a new range of her vibrant mixed media artworks on show in store, as well as giftware that includes jewellery by Carole House.
