Am I Really a Christian? 1
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?
CONGRATULATIONS!
You have made the best choice of your life!
Now What?
WORKBOOK
Welcome...
This workbook has been designed to
help you get the most out of your experience
as we come together to learn
God’s Word, and to encourage you in
your Christian walk. It is our desire to
assist you in your Christian walk by
providing a comfortable level of basic
understanding and remove any doubt
or ambiguity that you may be struggling
with.
We will meet weekly for a total of 6
sessions. The modules are designed to
be intimate in nature and provide a
place of sharing and healing for the
participants. You will hear exciting
stories from the Bible and share the
testimonies of the participants so that
you can hear real life practical applications
to the Scriptures. You will get to
work through Bible verses with the help
of your buddy and have discussions to
keep every lesson relevant. This is a
place where you can feel free to express
questions or concerns in a non-threatening
environment.
We may assist all of the participants to
establish a healthy buddy system for
accountability. We will also utilize journaling
as a positive method of personal
growth. We have observed that new
believers are more successful in walking
out a victorious life when they have
been well-equipped and encouraged
through these modules.
...Now that I am a Christian,
In between the weekly meeting times, we
hope that you will communicate with
your buddy for friendly encouragement
and uplifting interaction. You can also
journal your progress and write down
your thoughts so that you can fondly
look back on your experiences as a new
or re-committed Christian in the years to
come!
Assurance of Salvation
Period 1: Warming Up
Congratulations and welcome to your
new life as a Christian. You are on an
exciting journey with your Lord and Savior
– Jesus Christ. The Bible says you are a
new creature, a royal priesthood - transformed
into the Kingdom of Light. The
Bible goes on to say that all things have
been become new. You have a new
relationship with God the Father!
You might feel really good on some days,
and on other days, you might wonder
whether or not Jesus really is in your
heart. The fact is, you asked Jesus into
your life and He responded by sitting on
the throne of your heart. This week we
will go over your salvation story and find
out what the Bible has to say regarding
the assurance of salvation.
Facilitator:
After introductions, start off the session with a personal story about your salvation and the doubts that followed
in the short and long term. Then use either the story of Thomas (John 20:24-29) or the story of the Emmausʼ
walk (Luke 24:13-35) to illustrate that doubts are not new. Ask the group to discuss how the doubt was resolved
in each instance by Godʼs grace. You may also use appropriate texts such as John 1:12; John 20.29; and John
6:47 as backup. Have the participants examine their doubts against the background of the Word of
Period 2: Group Discussion
Now, there will be some thought
provoking questions that will lead into
our study. We encourage you to participate
in the discussion times and to feel
free to share openly in order to get the
fullest benefit.
Facilitator:
Ask 2 - 3 participants in the group to share their
salvation story and any doubts they might have.
Compare and contrast the Thomas on the road to
Emmaus experience to the personal stories given
by the participants. Write down the participantsʼ
concerns on the board or wall
Have you ever doubted your salvation
experience?
How do you know that you are truly
a Christian?
How are you sure you are really
forgiven?
Do you feel weak on some days?
How do you cope on such days?
How do you know that you have
been given eternal life?
What happens if you feel unworthy?
What are the assurances that you
need on a daily basis?
You may want to note down your insights and those shared by others
in your group below:
Period 3: Buddy Time
Facilitator:
Take time to explain the “Buddy System” at the beginning of this period. Refer to the rationale of the Study if
necessary. Dependent on the groupʼs dynamics, the buddy should not be more than two or three people. Refer
participants to the Bible and allow the participants 20 minutes to fill in the blanks in Period 3 with their buddy.
We will now begin to work with a buddy.
The group leader will facilitate this. Your
buddy ideally should be a new friend,
not your spouse. The idea is to grow in
friendship and accountability with someone
who is also growing by learning
and applying more about God to their
lives. This is someone that you can
communicate with during the week as
well as when you meet for the weekly
studies.
Once you have determined who your
buddy is going to be, then you can
begin working through the discussion
questions together.
Discussion Questions:
Describe your salvation experience to your buddy
How do you know that Jesus is in your life?
Your Assurances:
You have an assurance of:
Salvation - 1Timothy 1:15
God’s love - John 3.16; Jeremiah 31:3
Forgiveness - Ephesians 1:7-8; Acts13:38
Strength for each day - Psalm 121;
1Corinthians 15:57
Eternal Life - I John 2.25;
1Corinthians 15:21-22; Romans 6:23
Help - 1John 4:4; Nahum 1:7;
Psalm 32:7; John 16:33
God’s true Word - Ps 119:89;
Matthew 24:35; I Peter 1:25; Isaiah 40:8
Describe in your own words how you feel when you know that you
have acknowledged your sins, God has forgiven you, and you have a
good relationship with Him
2 Corinthians 5:17
Facilitator:
Review a few of the answers together with focus on the facts during each salvation experience. Use the
referenced texts. Encourage each participant to read the Bible. State that the fact is that the participant asked
Jesus to come into his/her heart. Also encourage participants to air their thoughts.
Period 4: Wrap Up
Facilitator:
Show a video. Be prepared to explain why it is important to memorize Scripture. Encourage everyone that it is
important to write the Word of God on their heart. Conclude by asking everyone to memorize John 1:12 and 1John
4:4 and fill out their reflective journal during the week. The weekʼs entries should focus on the assurance of
salvation. Allow time for questions. Ask for prayer requests and take time to pray together.
Finally, think about what would happen
if you truly believe all you have read and
heard during this study? Regardless of
what others may say or think about you,
how confident would you be in your
Christian walk? Don’t be suprised if
some of the criticism comes from some
people that profess to be Christian.
Meditate on John 1:12 and 1John 4:4
Page 6
Write these scriptures in your journal
and read them out loud at least once
during the day and at bedtime.
In your journal this week, write a few
comments on your new experience in
Christ. Write how you know that you are
indeed assured of your salvation and
also take some time to reflect on your
previous lifestyle against the background
of the Word of God. What has
already changed for you? How do you
feel about the changes?
Next week we shall be considering the
question, “Who is God?”
Quote:
“If our greatest need had been information God would have sent an educator. If our greatest need had been
technology God would have sent us a scientist. If our greatest need had been money God would have sent us an
economist. But since our greatest need was forgiveness, God sent us a Savior”
Unknown
“My trust in God flows out of the experience of his loving me, day in and day out, whether the day is stormy or
fair, whether I'm sick or in good health, whether I'm in a state of grace or disgrace. He comes to me where I live
and loves me as I am.”
