Tim Peake space capsule made of
LEGO and hydrogen-powered car
arrive at Techniquest
A replica of Tim Peake’s space capsule built using 150,000 LEGO bricks has gone on
display at Cardiff’s Techniquest. The replica of the Russian Soyuz Space Capsule, created
by the UK Space Agency and LEGO building company Bright Bricks, is set to be exhibited
at the science discovery centre from this month. The
design, which is two-thirds the size of the original
and took 650 hours to build, is modelled on the craft
which transported Major Peake to the International
Space Station (ISS) in 2015. Techniquest CEO Lesley
Kirkpatrick said: “I’m sure all our visitors will enjoy
seeing this and getting a sense of Major Peake’s
journey into space.”
Techniquest is also exhibiting a vehicle powered
almost entirely by hydrogen from this month
onwards. The Rasa model, which has been designed by
Llandrindod Wells company Riversimple, runs from an
8.5kw hydrogen fuel cell, and can drive for up to 300
miles. Ms Kirkpatrick said: “This is really impressive in
terms of what it can achieve by utilising innovation,
ingenuity and scientific thinking.”
Have a
Night-Out
with Casanova
If there’s ever a reason to leave your
little-ones at home and have a nightout
with friends, Northern Ballet’s
Casanova is probably it. Decadent and
sensual, Casanova is their brandnew
production about the man who
lived every minute in a whirlwind of scandal and excess. But there’s so much
more to him than you might have thought – and the ballet exposes a story
so sensational, you won’t believe it’s real. Make time for this spine-tingling
spectacle – it performs at the New Theatre from Tuesday 25 to Saturday 29
April. And look out for a ticket competition on our Facebook page later in April.
TOP TIPS
Exploring nature in #WildCardiff
Cardiff may be the capital city of Wales, but it’s also one of the richest cities for wildlife in
the UK. From the amazing Bute Park with over 3,000 trees to Grangemoor Park studded
with wildflowers and butterflies. St Fagan’s is a hotspot for bats. Peregrines nest on
City Hall and the rivers that flow through the city are home to otters, water voles and
thousands of migrating salmon. Sadly, we now know that lots of children and families are
unaware of and increasingly disconnected from Cardiff’s amazing urban wildlife; in Wales
only 1 child in every 8 is reasonably connected with the natural environment.
RSPB Cymru in partnership with the City of Cardiff Council and Buglife Cymru is working
to change this through Giving Nature a Home in Cardiff; a project that’s already enabled
over 20,000 children across Cardiff to spend more time with nature. Now funded by the Big
Lottery Fund, the project aims to engage a further 50,000 children and their families with
nature in the city.
The project has provided free outreach sessions to over 60% of Cardiff primary schools,
helping over 14,000 children discover and learn more about the nature in their school
grounds and identify how they can make their school more nature-friendly. It’s helped
communities in over 90% of Cardiff wards to spend more time with wildlife in their local
parks & greenspaces through free family events and our Cardiff Wildlife Detectives group;
meeting each month to head outdoors and get up-close with wildlife all year round. Across
the city a fantastic team of local volunteers have also been busy donating over 4000 hours
of their time to help engage communities with our urban wildlife.
But there’s still plenty of work to do to enable more children & their families to discover the
nature on their doorstep and take action to look after it. No matter how small the action,
with 1 in every 14 species in Wales now facing extinction giving nature a home in Cardiff
has never been so important.
If you’d like more information about the project, to arrange a free outreach session in your
school or find out more about our Cardiff Wildlife Detectives group for families please
Beauty and the Beast
Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” is a live-action
adaptation of the studio’s animated classic which
refashions the classic characters from the tale as
old as time for a contemporary audience, staying
true to the original music while updating the score
with several new songs. “Beauty and the Beast” is
the fantastic journey of Belle, a bright, beautiful and
independent young woman who is taken prisoner
by a beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she
befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to
look beyond the Beast’s hideous exterior and realize
the kind heart and soul of the true Prince within.
“Beauty and the Beast” is released in the UK and
Ireland on 17 March.
The Boss Baby
Meet a most unusual baby. He wears a suit and speaks with the voice and wit of Alec
Baldwin. ‘The Boss Baby’ is a hilarious story about how a new baby’s arrival impacts a family,
old named Tim. Tim is jealous of his fast-talking, briefcase-carrying baby brother. When he
embarks on a mission to win back the affections of his parents, he stumbles upon a secret
ploy by the CEO of Puppy Co.
that threatens to destroy the
balance of love in the world.
Tim and his brother must come
together to stop the dastardly
scheme. With a sly, heart-filled
message about the importance
of family, The Boss Baby is an
authentic and broadly appealing
original comedy for all ages. DreamWorks Animation’s ‘The Boss Baby’ will be released in
cinemas on 7 April.
and form ‘The Marble Gang’ with
the aim to wreak havoc around
the school by creating mischief
and playing pranks whilst everyone
I would recommend this book to my friends because
I thought it was funny and clever. I think both boys
Does your
child keep
catching
head lice?
The truth is they probably aren’t.
More likely it’s the same infestation you don’t
quite clear.
The fact is 80% of the time the products fail
you. What’s missed hatches, grows up, lays
more eggs & the struggle goes on.
We stop that. 100%. We clear it all out and
shut it all down. No more wasted
time, energy, & money down the
drain on useless product - and
importantly a healthier, happier
child.
‘Foster Carers Providing stable and Nurturing Placements
Which Enable Children and Young People to Thrive’
Foster Care Fortnight Monday 8th to Sunday 21st May 2017
Foster care continues to transform
children/young people’s lives. In the
Vale we are very privileged to work
alongside a great many longstanding,
and skilled foster carers who care
for children/young people from
diverse backgrounds with
wide-ranging needs. We need to
recruit more foster carers so as to
ensure that children and young people
can continue to be placed within their
community of origin. Thereby, enabling
them to maintain contact with their
families, and also minimising disruption
to education and other support systems
such as peer friendship groups. Foster
carers care for children/young people
of different ages. It could be for short
periods such as respite or emergency
placements lasting days or weeks, or
short and long term arrangements lasting
months to years. The greatest need
for foster placements currently being
sought by our Placements &
Permanency Team includes:
• Sibling groups
[preventing separation of siblings]
• Children/young people with learning
& physical disabilities and Autistic
Spectrum Disorder
• Young people 12+
• Parent & Child
So what do we look for in foster carers?
• Foster carers come from diverse
backgrounds but you will need:
• A spare bedroom
• Safe and stable environment
• Enough time to care
• Patience and a sense of humour
• Energy and motivation
• Commitment/stickability - to help
the child/young person through
challenging times in their lives.
• Ability to be open and honest
• Be willing to learn new skills
The Vale of Glamorgan will be organising
a number of events during Foster Care
Fortnight, the details of which will be
published on our website shortly.
Are you interested in becoming a foster
carer for our authority? Do you have an
hour to spare? Would you be willing to
invest this time alongside us in order to
support the children/young people in our
community? If you have answered yes to
either of these questions then please call
us on 01446 729600, email at
