The city became Edwin<strong>to</strong>n, May 1872. On July 17,<br />

1873, it was renamed Bismarck for <strong>the</strong> Chancellor <strong>of</strong><br />

Germany, Prince Ot<strong>to</strong> Eduard Leopold von Bismarck-<br />

Schonhausen. This was <strong>to</strong> please him and try <strong>to</strong> get<br />

him <strong>to</strong> invest in <strong>the</strong> railroad. He never invested in<br />

<strong>the</strong> railroad.<br />

Statehood<br />

Admitted <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> union November 2, 1889, as <strong>the</strong><br />

explored <strong>the</strong> boundaries <strong>of</strong> land and culture. A young<br />

man named Theodore Roosevelt gained respect in<br />

<strong>the</strong> West before becoming a United States President.<br />

An American Indian girl named Sakakawea joined<br />

<strong>the</strong> Corps <strong>of</strong> Discovery and provided valuable<br />

interpretation and guidance. Here, <strong>the</strong> “yellowhaired”<br />

General George Armstrong Custer<br />

commanded <strong>the</strong> 7th Cavalry before meeting his fate<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Little Big Horn. Custer’s rival in<br />

that battle, Sitting Bull, rode from here as well —<br />

<strong>North</strong> Dakota was <strong>the</strong> home <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hunkpapa Lakota<br />

Awards<br />

The award recognizes present or former <strong>North</strong><br />

Dakotans who have achieved national recognition<br />

in <strong>the</strong>ir fields <strong>of</strong> endeavor. Recipients <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award<br />

are chosen by <strong>the</strong> Governor, with concurrence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Secretary <strong>of</strong> State and Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> State His<strong>to</strong>rical<br />

Society. As <strong>of</strong> May 2008, 36 <strong>North</strong> Dakotans have<br />

received <strong>the</strong> award. Their portraits are on display in<br />

<strong>the</strong> lower level <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> capi<strong>to</strong>l building. To name just a<br />
