Theodore Roosevelt
Legends of North Dakota
Stories of great legends live on through our culture
and heritage. Come closer and share in North
Dakota’s, we have plenty. Here, Lewis and Clark
explored the boundaries of land and culture. A young
man named Theodore Roosevelt gained respect in
the West before becoming a United States President.
An American Indian girl named Sakakawea joined
the Corps of Discovery and provided valuable
interpretation and guidance. Here, the “yellowhaired”
General George Armstrong Custer
commanded the 7th Cavalry before meeting his fate
at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Custer’s rival in
that battle, Sitting Bull, rode from here as well —
North Dakota was the home of the Hunkpapa Lakota
Sioux chief.
Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider
Awards
The award recognizes present or former North
Dakotans who have achieved national recognition
in their fields of endeavor. Recipients of the award
are chosen by the Governor, with concurrence of the
Secretary of State and Director of State Historical
Society. As of May 2008, 36 North Dakotans have
received the award. Their portraits are on display in
the lower level of the capitol building. To name just a
few:
• Phil Jackson, world champion pro basketball
coach
• Louis L’Amour, acclaimed western writer
• Lawrence Welk, musician and TV entertainer
• Roger Maris, pro baseball legend
• Angie Dickinson, TV and movie actress
