The different types of vials
Horizontal vial
Horizontal measurements
The aluminium spirit level profile
Smooth rectangular
profile
Classic design for all
applications up to the
moderately difficult.
Vertical vial
Vertical measurements
Rectangular profile with
ribs to strengthen the
profile and for improved
handling.
Angle vial
Measurement of a
range of slopes
Cast T profile
A very rigid cast
aluminium profile with
one measuring surface.
45° angle vial
Fixed slope measurement
Extra-strong cast double
T profile
An ultra-strong double T
profile made from cast
aluminium with gripping
holes and two measuring
surfaces.
Six ring vial
Rapid slope measurement
The profile constitutes an
extension of the vial and
must therefore be made of a
lasting and stable material.
This material combines great
practicality, low weight and
optimum handling.
Coated measuring surface
Milled measuring surface
Measuring surface with bridging
plates – for bridging uneven
areas of wood or masonry.
Milled measuring surface with
super-powerful rare earth magnet
system – the optimum system for
steel construction work.
Milled measuring surface with
a V-shaped groove – for extra
secure adhesion to pipes and
other steel items.
The measuring surfaces
The measuring surfaces on
spirit levels can be designed in
various ways. In most cases, the
complete body of the spirit level,
including the measuring surface,
is powder-coated, painted or
anodised, but on some spirit
levels the measuring surface is
also milled flat after the coating
process.
In every case, it is important
that the surface be completely
smooth. For this reason, not
every side of a spirit level can
be used as a measuring surface.
The end caps
Permanent impact-resistant
plastic end caps are used to
protect the measuring
surfaces.
The upright height of the
level’s hollow profile must be
appropriately dimensioned to
provide good shock-absorption.
STABILA also provides end
caps with practical additional
functions.
1 Standard end caps: Impact
and shock-resistant.
2 End caps with patented
anti-slip stopper: Holds firm
even when laid with just one
hand. Convenient for marking
out. Greater security.
3 Removable end caps: Mark
right into corners – lay on
narrow edges.
4 Shock-absorbing end caps:
Two-component material mix
ensures effective energy
absorption upon impact.
