Lasers Spirit levels Rules Measuring tapes Levelling boards Accessories

Everyone must measure.
Whether you are a professional or a DIY
enthusiast. Day in day out. The best
known measuring implement is the
folding rule which was invented in 1865
by the Ullrich brothers. The individual
rules were joined together in 1886 by
spring joints which click into place. This
invention is still proving its worth today
and every day. In 1889 the Ullrich family
formed a company that now is called
STABILA and is known the whole world
over for quality measuring instruments.
Accurate measuring is
all about technology.
Experienced craftsmen know that the
quality of the measurements they take
determines the quality of their work.
Therefore, whatever the project,
measuring is the most frequent task.
This places stringent demands on
the measuring instrument. 1. It must
measure precisely. Only then can you
be sure that the result is right. 2. It must
be robust – so that it can stand up to the
knocks of the working day without a
problem. 3. It must be reliable. Over
many years. 4. It must be easy to work
with, whatever the use and whatever
the weather conditions. Four crucial
attributes which every STABILA measuring
instrument possesses. And therefore the
best starting point for successful work.
Safety advice:
The double safety system that
we use ensures that the laser’s
power in our systems does not
exceed that for laser Class 2
(under 1 milliwatt). Nevertheless,
you should strictly avoid looking
directly into the laser beam!
Tripods
Tripods are one of the most
important tools when working with
lasers. With the aid of a laser
mounted on a tripod (depending
on the type and height of the tripod)
virtually every height from 50 cm to
285 cm can be levelled horizontally.
Modern tripods are made from
aluminium and are therefore
very light but also very sturdy.
The different designs of the leg
extension and locking mechanisms
also enable the tripod to be erected
quickly on uneven surfaces.
The measuring surfaces
The measuring surfaces on
spirit levels can be designed in
various ways. In most cases, the
complete body of the spirit level,
including the measuring surface,
is powder-coated, painted or
anodised, but on some spirit
levels the measuring surface is
also milled flat after the coating
process.
In every case, it is important
that the surface be completely
smooth. For this reason, not
every side of a spirit level can
be used as a measuring surface.
The end caps
Permanent impact-resistant
plastic end caps are used to
protect the measuring
surfaces.
The upright height of the
level’s hollow profile must be
appropriately dimensioned to
provide good shock-absorption.
STABILA also provides end
caps with practical additional
functions.
1 Standard end caps: Impact
and shock-resistant.
2 End caps with patented
anti-slip stopper: Holds firm
even when laid with just one
hand. Convenient for marking
out. Greater security.
3 Removable end caps: Mark
right into corners – lay on
narrow edges.
4 Shock-absorbing end caps:
Two-component material mix
ensures effective energy
absorption upon impact.
The professional mini-format spirit
level – ideal for every craftsman
who is proud of his work. A robust
case with an aluminium core, a
rectangular aluminium frame with
two precisely milled measuring
surfaces – on the side and the
Special spirit levels
At last, a spirit level especially for
electrical and installation work. The
STABILA solution: Marking holes at
standardised distances, with each
hole located perfectly! Now you can
measure and mark out horizontals
or verticals and the distance
between sockets or switches in a
single operation. That demonstrably
saves time and money. On the one
hand, it saves on mental arithmetic
and having to juggle with several
measuring instruments – while, on
the other hand, you save money
on retouching the plaster.
In accordance with DIN 49075,
the distance for combinations of
drill holes is 71 mm.
the country-specific installation
standards.
1
Materials and coating
For wooden rules, the most
important factor for optimum
unbreakability is to use choice,
well stored, highly elastic
woods as the primarymaterial.
For plastic rules, glass fibrereinforced
plastic provides
the greatest durability.
The coating on the wooden
rules must be able to handle
every adversity. They are
protected against damp,
sun and mechanical abrasion.
This is the only way to
ensure the scale’s good,
long-term legibility.
Their quality is recognisable by:
STABILA has a long tradition of
only using choice, high-quality
beech as the base material for
its wooden rules. This makes the
rules especially hard-wearing.
2
The printing
A quality rule can be immediately recognised
by the marking on its first section. Look for
four important pointers: 1. the nominal
length 2. the rule’s accuracy classification
which is indicated in Roman numerals
3. EU type approval certification 4. the CE
and metrology marks. And last but not least,
the manufacturer’s name, in other words the
1
The environmentally-
friendlylacquer to the
company’s own
formulation, provides
unsurpassed weather
and abrasion resistance.
brand which confirms the rule’s origin and
construction. The graduation scale, the most
important feature, must be printed clearly
and show an obvious distinction between
units and tens. A double millimetre scale (on
the upper and lower edge) increases the rule’s
usefulness.
2
3
3
The joints
STABILA predominantly uses joints made from hardened
spring steel, which ensure precise engagement and good
spring action long-term. Catches and end cams provide
strong retention, guaranteeing accuracy. Its special
construction makes the joint operate smoothly over a
long period. Highly durable glass fibre-reinforced
polyamide joints are used on some models.
STABILA rules 78–79

The unique advantage of a
measuring tape is that it can
provide measurements up
to 100m long in a compact
form. There are different
types of measuring tapes
to suit different applications
and different measurement
distances
Pocket tape measures:
Usable anywhere, small,
light and easy to carry, on
your belt or in your pocket,
and ideal for measurements
up to approx. 10 m.
Cased measuring tapes:
For measuring distances
up to 30 m.
Open-frame measuring
tapes: For measuring
distances up to 100 m,
as commonly required in
road construction and
landscaping work.
All about measuring tapes
Particular features indicating
the quality of the measuring
tape are:
1. The accuracy. The following
details are marked at the
beginning of high-quality
measuring tapes: nominal
length, the CE and metrology
mark, the accuracy class and
the manufacturer’s brand.
2. The tape’s composition.
• For pocket tape measures,
the tape’s durability is an
important factor: for this
reason, most steel tapes
are concave and have a
resistant coating to protect
the graduated scale from
abrasion by particles of dirt.
• Cased and open frame
measuring tapes with steel
or fibreglass tapes. Steel
measuring tapes suffer from
more significant changes in
length, depending on the
temperature but require less
traction force for precise
measurements than fibreglass
tapes. The design and the
material protect the steel tape
against friction and breaking.
3.The tape end.
The STABILA spikes hook:
many STABILA pocket
measuring tapes have the
spikes hook which prevents
the tape from slipping on
smooth surfaces.
The STABILA universal hook:
ideal for long tape measures.
A special hook with a spike
coating. Also with an eyelet
for quick-release fixing.
Standard designs for the
beginning of the tape:
For cased measuring tapes,
a pull ring. For open-frame
measuring tapes, a particularly
large pull-ring with notches for
vertical measurement. Different
tape beginnings available.
4. The casing.
Different materials are used to
provide protection and easy,
long-term safe handling.
For cased and open frame
measuring tapes, this is
usually ABS plastic but
metal is also used for some
individual casings and
frames. The mechanical parts
of open frame measuring
tapes are made from steel,
aluminium or high-quality
plastic. On pocket tape
measures, the gripping area is
often covered with soft rubber.
5. Useful additional functions
increase the measuring tape’s
practicality: for instance,
buffers on the tape mouth, a
tape return brake, a blade lock
and a variety of end hooks.
Almost all STABILA pocket tape
measures without exception
are equipped with the STABILA
spikes hook which prevents
the tape from slipping on
smooth surfaces.
All about levelling boards, wedge shape darbies and
feather edges
Levelling boards, wedge shape
darbies and feather edges are
simple but effective tools used
as an aid in producing large,
smooth surfaces.
To ensure that these tools
last and remain accurate for
a long time, they are made
from drawn aluminium profile.
The distinction between the
individual categories comes
from their area of application,
which dictates the shape of
their cross-section.
A level’s quality can be determined by the following characteristics:
1
1 The material | 2 The design | 3 The shape of the profile
2
2
2
• Profiled shapes for
producing finished surfaces
are feather edges.
•Profiles for skimming
and levelling materials are
wedge shape darbies.
• Rectangular aluminium
profiles for checking the
evenness of a surface are
levelling boards.
3
It is much easier to work with
levels if they are equipped
with additional components.
In the first place, this involves
horizontal and vertical vials.
To improve handling, a
handhold is often integrated
into the profile. For rapid
and accurate results, these
products are available in
different lengths, giving you
the opportunity to have the
appropriate length of tool
for your particular working
surface.
In all cases, as with all tools,
you should pay attention to the
trademark. With a good brand,
you can be sure that you have a
good quality tool.
