Nissan launches all-new Navara
THE launch of the all-new 4x4
Navara is the first step in an
ambitious plan to underline
Nissan’s long-standing reputation
as the leading pick-up
brand in Africa.
“The introduction of three 4x4
double cab models marks the
start of an aggressive expansion
programme that will later
introduce a wide range of 4x2
double cab models and other
body types of the Navara in
the medium term,” says Mike
Whitfield, managing director
of Nissan Group of Africa.
The Nissan Navara lands in
South Africa as part of
Nissan’s on-going worldwide
introduction of this truly global
pick-up.
The model succeeds the previous
generation Navara, which
was sold in South Africa
alongside its sibling – the Nissan
Hardbody.
The Hardbody remains in production
in Nissan’s Rosslyn
plant. The new Navara is, or
will soon be, on sale in virtually
all parts of the world, including
North America (Canada
and Mexico), South America,
Europe, the Middle East and
Australasia.
Ahead of its introduction, the
all-new Navara endured over
40 000 different quality and
endurance tests and 1 million
test kilometres, including demanding
terrain in Africa.
In South Africa, the rigorous
local testing informed specific
model changes and improvements
for the South African
models, while also allowing
for the development and testing
of a comprehensive range
of vehicle accessories. This
means that the new Navara
not only arrives ready for an
overland adventure in African
conditions, but buyers have
access to one of the most
comprehensive accessory option
lists ever to be launched
with a new pick-up.
“The new Navara is as much a
new generation of a globally
popular pick-up as it is a platform
to introduce new technologies
to this market segment,”
says Xavier Gobille, Director
for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales
at Nissan Group of Africa.
The range of new technologies
to the segment includes
an independent rear suspension
on the ‘top of the range’
double cab models and new
manufacturing techniques
that have seen the latest Navara
drop up to 176kg over its
predecessor, including 20 kg
in the rear suspension alone.
The all-new Navara engine is
another technical first in its
segment. It features two turbo
chargers, a new heat management
system and the ability to
utilise urea for a Euro 6 clean
fuels rating in countries where
the fuel quality allows it.
“The new Navara has proven
incredibly popular with both
leisure and commercial vehicle
buyers in Europe, where
the vehicle was first launched.
It has been just as impressive
in South African testing,
where our team of technical
engineers has made sure the
vehicle is ‘Africa-ready’ in all
respects,” says Gobille.
Amongst its many accolades,
the Navara was selected as
the Best Pick-Up at the Fleet
World Awards in London and
the Pick-Up of the Year and
Innovation of the Year in the
Vans A2Z Competition. In
these awards, as in the International
Pick-Up of the Year
competition, the Navara was
singled out for its innovative
new engine, the option of an
independent rear suspension
and the SUV-style interior design
and on-road manners.

New Tiguan gets diesel engine added to model line-up
VW has added three diesel
engines and one petrol engine
into the new Tiguan
model line-up. At launch, the
new Tiguan was only available
in two 1.4 TSI engines
(92kW and 110kW).
The new engines that have
been added are 2.0 TDI with
power output that ranges
from 81kw to 130kW as well
as the model range topper,
2.0 TSI petrol engine with
162kW power output.
The high powered engines,
2.0 TDI with 105kW, 2.0 TDI
with 130kW and 2.0 TSI with
162kW are offered with the
improved 4MOTION allwheel
system.
All-wheel drive is a key feature
for many Tiguan customers.
The new high efficient
4MOTION all-wheel drive
system has enhanced the
off-road capabilities of the
new Tiguan.
4MOTION constantly monitors
driving conditions and
reacts to the slightest wheel
slip, delivering extra traction
to the wheels with the most
grip.
All this happens in milliseconds,
through control units
linked to the car’s dynamic
sensors, engine management
system and gearbox.
At the heart of the system is
an inter-axle differential – a
fifth generation Haldex coupling
– which shares power
between the front and rear
axle, sending it where it’s
most needed. At the same
time, the smaller differences
in rotational speed when cornering
or manoeuvring have
to be balanced to stop torsional
stresses in the drive
train.
The differential is designed
to work with the car’s other
active safety systems such
as the anti-lock braking system
(ABS) and the electronic
stability programme (ESP).
Ground clearance is increased
by 10 mm higher
and in addition, the Tiguan
can be ordered with an‘Offroad’
package with a special
off-road front end.
New to the range is the highspec
4MOTION Active Control.
The intuitively operated
rotary/push-button switch is
located on the centre console
and allows the driver to
activate one of four driving
modes. When the driver
turns the switch to the left
one of the two road profiles:

‘Onroad’ or ‘Snow’ is activated.
When the switch is
turned to the right, the driver
selects one of the two offroad
profiles: ‘Offroad’
(automatic setting of off-road
parameters) or ‘Offroad Individual’
(variable settings).
When driving off-road,
4MOTION Active Control lets
drivers switch the assistance
systems in seconds with a
single manual operation.
The electronic accelerator
pedal can be metered precisely
as the intelligence of
the dual clutch gearbox allows
it to upshift later.
The driver can avoid mandatory
shifts by changing gears
via the tip gate (+/-); this also
facilitates engine braking. In
this case “automatic freewheeling”
is deactivated,
which is decoupling of the
engine to make use of the
kinetic energy of coasting.
Traction control (ASR) governs
engine speed and simultaneously
manages traction
and driving stability. In parallel,
the steering system and
adaptive damper control
switch over to a suitable driving
profile. Electronic Stability
Control (ESC) activates
the Offroad characteristic,
and the driver assistance
systems for hill ascent and
descent come into play. In
addition, the dynamic cornering
lights open up a brighter
and wider light pattern near
the car.
The 2.0 TDI with 81kW power
output is the base engine
of the diesel range. The fourcylinder
common rail diesel
engine has 280 Nm of torque
that is available between
3000 and 4500 rpm.
The next diesel engine in the
line-up is the 2.0 TDI that
delivers 105kW of power output.
It has 340 Nm of torque
that is available from 1750
up to 2750 rpm. The classic
0-100km/h sprint is achieved
in 9.5 seconds and has top
speed of 197km/h. The combined
fuel consumption is 6.1
litres per 100 kilometres. The
105kW engine is available
with a 7-speed DSG transmission.
The most powerful engine in
the diesel range is the 2.0
TDI with 130kW power output.
The four cylinder common
rail diesel engine has
380 Nm of torque that is delivered
from 1750 to 3000
rpm. It sprints from 0-100
km/h in 8.3 seconds and its
top speed is at 207km/h. The
130kW engine is mated to a
7-speed DSG transmission.
The range topping 162kW

Power is rated at 162kW engine
withjhas a maximum
torque of 350 Nm available
from a low 1500 rpm. The
0-100km/h sprint is achieved
in 6.5 seconds and it has a
top speed of 220km/h. It is
available with 7-speed DSG
transmission. The engine is
fitted with BlueMotion Technology
which includes
Stop/Start and battery regeneration
systems to enhance
fuel economy.
The new Tiguan can be customised
with a number of
optional convenience features.
The new Tiguan comes
standard with a 5 year/90
000km Service Plan, 3
year/120 000km warranty
and a 12 year anti-corrosion
warranty. Service Interval is
15 000km.

Polo Vivo revives the Freedom of the
Citi
VOLKSWAGEN is paying homage
to its venerable and legendary,
Citi Golf model with the
introduction of the limited edition
Citi Vivo.
Citi Vivo is bringing back the
ubiquitous three colours of Red,
Yellow and Blue which were
used to launch the original Citi
Golf in 1984.
The production of the iconic
Citi Golf at the Volkswagen
manufacturing factory in Uitenhage
ended in 2009 after 25
years of giving mobility freedom
to many South African customers.
Over that time, the Uitenhage
plant produced over 377 000
units many of which are still
used on our roads for the daily
commute.
