Miss KHS Junior and Senior crowned at Gala occasion
RECENTLY Miss KHS 2017
was chosen at a gala occasion
held in the school hall.
The evening was hosted and
organised by the KHS Dance
Committee under the efficient
guidance of Ms Christelle
Frauenstein.
The theme of the show was
'YOU CAN DO IT! WOMAN
UP! The show was designed
to celebrate and honour the
understated power of women.
It must be pointed out that
the Miss KHS show is not a
beauty pageant.
It is about choosing the girls
who truly represent the KHS
ethos. Miss KHS must be
upright in body, mind and soul.
She must participate with
enthusiasm in school activities
and at all times be an
ambassador for the school.
The judges for the evening
were a cross-section of learners
and adults, thus ensuring
a true reflection of the merits
of each candidate.
smoked pork fillet
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 200°C. In
a bowl, combine 20g roughly
chopped hazelnuts, 70g basil
pesto and 4 roughly chopped
figs. Season the mixture well
with salt and freshly ground
black pepper. Place a 600g
smoked pork fillet on a chopping
board and cut a slit
down the length of the fillet,
taking care not to cut through
the whole fillet. Open the fillet
up like a book and place the
fig-and-pesto mixture down
the middle with a few sprigs
of fresh rosemary. Using
kitchen string, tie the fillet up
at 4cm intervals to secure.
Place the pork on a roasting
tray and dot with butter.
Roast in the preheated oven
for 30 minutes until almost
cooked through. Add a little
extra freshly ground black
pepper and fresh rosemary
sprigs and slice up to serve

KWTCYCC vehicle 'grounded' after tyres and rims stolen
NO WHEELS: Thieves stole the tyres and
rims of a KWTCYCC minibus that transports
learners to various schools
LAST Monday morning at around
6:15 am as one of the KWYCYCC
child care workers a driver were preparing
to take kids to school when
they noticed that the wheels of there
Toyota Quantum were missing.
'They alerted me and on inspecting
the area we noticed that all four tyres
and rims were stolen and the Quantum
was left standing on bricks,' said
KWTCYCC spokesperson Zeally Genade.
'A concrete slab of the wall was
removed and the security fence was
lifted in the corner to gain entrance
into the yard.
'Two of the Quantum's wheel caps
were lying on the outside of the yard
at the entrance the thieves had created.
'I contacted the police and they told
me that they would send a police
vehicle over shortly. We made alternative
plans to transport our kids to
school.
'I went to the police station around
8:00 am to report the matter and
opened a case.
'On Tuesday the police came to
the Centre and took finger prints from
the Quantum and later on a police
detective also came,' said Zeally.He
said the home was very troubled by
this act and saddened that people
Amathole Museum gives support to The Young Patriots Programme
OPPURTUNITY: Museum educator Gcina Vani in the foreground and young patriots in background Sive
(Right) and Olwethu (Left) holding the National Flag.
DURING the previous week
Amathole Museum gave two
young patriots the
opportunity to work with the
museum educator on a
nation building event which
forms part of the museum’s
programmes.
The museum educator Gcina
Vani and two young patriots
Sive Sauli and Olwethu
Mpaku visited Qaukeni
Lower Higher Primary School
some 20 km out of King
William’s Town on the line to
Peddie where the school had
a special programme for
hosting of the National flag.
This programme was
attended by SAPS,
Provincial Department of
Education, members of the
community and educators
from several surrounding
schools. The team from the
museum presented a lesson
on the importance of the
National flag elaborating on
the significance and meaning
of the various colours in the
flag. They also talked about
the dos and don’ts such as
the flag cannot be used as a
table cloth, should not touch
the ground, no logos and
slogans are printed on the
flag etc. They also told their
audience that the National
flag at all times has to be
treated with respect and
dignity. They explained
circumstances when the flag
is flown at half mast. Further
on they said that when the
flag is being raised people
around are expected to
accord due respect by
standing still.
Amathole Museum Director
Fred Kigozi said that, the two
young patriots are part of a
team of 32 Eastern Cape
youth for The Young Patriots
Programme (TYPP) who
were selected, trained and
thereafter posted in all the
EC Provincial districts to
promote social cohesion and
nation building. Sive and
Olwethu report to Amathole
Museum but spend most of
their time in the surrounding
schools conducting TYPP
business.
TYPP is a partnership
between the National Youth
Development Agency,
NYDA and the National
Department of Arts and
Culture. This 12 month
programme has the main
objective of educating the
youth about history and
heritage through practical
Kuselo appeals to community
to support winter drive
KUSELO is busy collecting
blankets, bedding and warm
clothing towards their "lets
help for winter" drive currently
underway in support of children
and adults who will feel
the cold this coming winter.
'It is a sad reality that many
children and adults are homeless
and for those that do
have homes they are unable
to afford or obtain warm clothing
and bedding,' said Kuselo
director, Amanda Coetzee.
'With your help we will be able
to keep some persons warm
this winter.'She asked that all
unwanted clothing items that
you may are donated towards
the winter drive as people
are desperately in need of
help.
'Our biggest age range is 5 to
12 and 17 to 25 years. We
also have adults who are in
our care, therefore any adult
sizes are most welcome.
'A big appeal is also for any
shoes - all sizes, as most of
the children who we serve in
the community do not have
any shoes to wear.
'We also appeal to the
community for any food items
such as canned foods or dry
condiments so that we can
start preparing food parcels
that we can hand out,' said
Amanda.Kuselo is also a
distribution centre and 'we
will collaborate with
community
charity
organisations closer to June
to donate items to them if we
have collected a large
amount to ensure that
individuals in all areas benefit
this coming winter as it is our
wish that most individuals
have a warm winter this year,'
concluded Amanda.If you
wish to donate please contact
Amanda on 0725127227,
thank you for your support.
Adopting a pet
SPCAs do not give away
animals nor do they sell
animals – animals are
ADOPTED from SPCAs.
This may seem like we are
playing word games but
there is a big difference. Let
us explain.
All cats and dogs that are
adopted from an SPCA will
be sterilised to prevent them
from either having (or siring)
any unwanted litters; they
will be vaccinated to
safeguard them from
contracting diseases such
as distemper or parvovirus;
they will be dewormed to
assist in the elimination of
internal parasites, they may
also be dipped to ensure
that there are no external
parasites; and they will
receive some form of
identification (either a
microchip or a collar bearing
an ID disc). This is what
prospective owners are
paying for whenever they
adopt an animal from an
SPCA. The actual animal is
for free!!
If you take into
consideration that simply to
sterilise a dog at your local
veterinarian can cost
anything between R1,150
and R1,350 and that a
vaccination and deworming
can cost R350 and upwards
it quickly becomes apparent
that the R450 to R500
adoption fee that SPCAs
charge to adopt an animal,
covering all of these
expenses – and more, is not
expensive at all.
Certainly if we start to look at
the prices charged by
‘back–yard' breeders who
sell animals through
classified advertisements, at
pet shops, flea markets or
over the Internet, it again
becomes very clear what
good value is offered by
SPCAs. It is very important
to remember that the backyard
breeder is generally not
concerned where their
puppies or kittens end up,
nor do they usually ensure
that the animal has a clean
bill of health – we only have
to count the number of times
SPCAs are contacted by
broken hearted owners who
have bought an animal only
to have it fall ill (and even
die) a short time after the
purchase due to illness or
disease. Owners have been –
known to run up high
veterinary bills trying to treat
a sick pup or kitten that they
have only just bought.
SPCAs on the other hand do
their utmost to only home
healthy animals – and if the
animal does fall ill within the
first 7 days of adoption they
will treat the animal at their
own cost. This does not
unfortunately cover an
animal that has been injured
through the new owner's
neglect – such as an animal
that is run over due to the
gate being left open for
example.
The public may argue that to
purchase a puppy or kitten
from the local pet shop does
not cost anything like the
cost of adopting an animal
from an SPCA. Again, it
should be reiterated that the
animal does not cost
anything when adopting an
animal from the SPCA – the
fee charged merely
subsidises and does not
even cover the cost of the
care and treatment provided
to the animal and we would
hope that anyone
purchasing an animal from a
pet shop would have the
animal sterilised, vaccinated
and dewormed – to not do
so would be irresponsible
and would not be putting the
welfare of the animal first.
Paying a private
veterinarian to carry out
these procedures will
FRIDAY 17 MARCH 2017 THE BUGLE 9
from an SPCA
definitely cost much more
than the SPCA adoption fee.
The officially adopted
Statement of Policy of the
SPCA movement is to
"discourage the keeping of
domestic animals by those
who do not have the
facilities, time, financial
means or level of interest
necessary to ensure a
satisfactory standard of care
and husbandry for their pets”
domestic animals deserve
to be loved, cared for, taken
to the vet when necessary,
played with, taken for walks
and so on. SPCAs are
careful to ensure that these
qualities are available in all
prospective homes. This is
why we do not home dogs
just for security – and rather
advise people to contact a
security firm and hire a
guard if they are concerned
about safety. Our animals
are homed as PETS and of
course, if these animals
bond with their owners, they
will express natural
behaviour, becoming
protective of their new home
and family and raise the
alarm by barking at intruders
that come onto their property.
Members of the public have
asked the question "If
SPCAs have so many
animals – why do they not
give them away for free?”
Whilst this question has
already been answered, it
should be added that if a
prospective owner cannot
afford to pay the modest
adoption fee, how would
they be able to pay for
quality food, veterinary fees
and the other costs that
arise in providing the best
level of care for your pets.
SPCAs home animals
responsibly as we intend for
homed animals to remain in
that same home for the rest
of their lives which may be in
excess of 10 years. In an
attempt to ensure this, all
properties are inspected
before an SPCA animal is
adopted. This is to establish
that the property is large
enough for the species of
animal being homed, that
any animals already living
on the property are in good
condition and will accept the
animal being adopted, that
the walls and gates are high
enough to keep the animal
in (obviously this particular
concern would not strictly
apply to cats but they would
still require a safe
environment) and to ensure
that there is some form of
suitable shelter for the
animal. No animal will be
homed if it is going to be put
onto a chain – not even a
running chain, as this is no
life for any animal. It may
seem that the criteria for
adopting an animal are
stringent, but they are
entirely in the best interests
of the animal.
The SPCA has a saying that
goes – ‘owning an animal is
a privilege and not a right'
and the animals that come
into our care are either
strays that have become
lost or been abandoned as
well as cats and dogs that
are unwanted and are
handed over to SPCAs; and
of course animals that have
been neglected and illtreated
and removed by
SPCA Inspectors in order to
find new loving homes
where they will never again
be subjected to any form of
ill-treatment. We take this
onerous responsibility very
seriously and Societies for
the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals cannot permit any
of these animals to go to any
homes where they will be
anything else but loved and
cared for – we cannot be
part of letting these animals
down.
Possible fuel drop wiped
out by tax increases
ALTHOUGH fuel prices are
predicted to drop in April,
most of the benefit of the
decreases will be wiped out
by the increases to the
general fuel, and Road Accident
Fund (RAF) levies.
This is according to the Automobile
Association (AA),
which was commenting on
unaudited mid-month fuel
price data released by the
Central Energy Fund (CEF).
The general fuel levy will
increase by 30 cents, and the
RAF levy by nine cents, on 1
April. Based on the current
data, the AA is predicting that
petrol will decrease by 51
cents litre, diesel by about 27
cents a litre, and illuminating
paraffin by 32 cents.
“This means that while motorists
may have expected the
current price per litre of petrol
to drop substantially, they will
now only see it going down
by around 12 cents a litre.
Diesel users, on the other
hand, will see an increase of
12 cents a litre, with the levies
eating up any gains,” the AA
said.
First Class Seat
A blonde gets on an airplane and
sits down in the first class section of
the plane. The stewardess rushes
over to her and tells her she must
move to coach because she doesn't
have a first class ticket. The blonde
replies, "I'm blonde, I'm smart, I
have a good job, and I'm staying in
first class until we reach Jamaica."
The disgusted stewardess gets the
head stewardess who asks the
blonde to leave. The blonde yet
again repeats "I'm blonde, I'm smart,
I have a good job and I'm staying in
first class until we reach Jamaica."
The head stewardesses doesn't
The Association noted international
petroleum prices have
continued to decline leading
to the expected drops at the
end of the month.
"OPEC's reduction in its crude
oil output targets has been
countered by increasing global
oil stocks held by non-
OPEC nations," the AA said.
"This has gradually pushed
the oil price down to near the
levels it was maintaining
before OPEC's output targets
were adjusted, which is good
news for South Africans."
The Association said that the
Rand / US dollar exchange
rate had remained nearly flat
since the end of the month,
meaning South Africans were
likely to see the most of the
benefit of the oil price drops.
"The Rand has shed around
four cents against the dollar
since the start of March. If
this period of relative stability
in the exchange rate continues,
the currency will only
have a small influence on the
fuel price at month end," the
AA concluded.
even know what to do at this point
because they still have to get the
rest of the passengers seated to
take off; the blode is causing a
problem with boarding now, so the
stewardess gets the copilot.
The copilot goes up to the blonde
and whispers in her ear. She
immediately gets up and goes to her
seat in the coach section. The head
stewardess asks the copilot in
amazement what he said to get her
to move to her correct seat. The
copilot replies, "I told her the front
half of the airplane wasn't going to
Jamaica."
FRIDAY 17 MARCH 2017 THE BUGLE 11
Transnet's widespread cat
poisoining condemned,
appeal for witnesses
TRANSNET'S proposed
method of eradicating cats in
and around various premises
owned by the company has
met with shock, anger and
absolute condemnation by
the National Council of SP-
CAs.
The NSPCA asks what kind
of people would advocate
cruelty to living creatures on
this scale? The brutal, pitiless
and ruthless treatment of cats
who will suffer or have
already suffered terribly, prior
to death is inconceivable.
Yet, the “knock-on” effect
extends to the secondary
poisoning and the suffering
of other creatures: - including
owls and other scavengers.
Do they care? We think not.
Mirriam Tenyane, the compliance
officer for Transnet, has
allegedly commissioned a
poisoning protocol to operate
nationally at Transnet sites
where there are feral cats.
Poisoning animals is a contravention
of the Animals Protection
Act No 71 of 1962.
The NSPCA issued a warning
in terms of the Animals
Protection Act to Ms Tenyane
on Friday 10 March 2017, in
which the need to stop
poisoning cats with immediate
effect was emphasised,
failing which, criminal charges
in terms of the Animals
Protection Act may be laid.
Correspondence was submitted
to the Executive Director
of Transnet, requesting an
urgent meeting to discuss the
matter. To date, the NSPCA
has received no response or
feedback despite additional
telephone calls having been
made and emails sent.
Whilst it is acknowledged that
problems may arise with
regard to homeless or “feral”
populations
of
animals, HUMANE methods
of control, handling and
resolution must be employed.
The NSPCA assures all
concerned individuals that we
shall pursue this matter
relentlessly and steadfastly.
An urgent and heartfelt appeal
is made to welfare
organisations and caring
individuals, including employees
of Transnet, to come
forward with any evidence of
cruelty, poisoning or the
mistreatment of any animal
by Transnet. Signed affidavits
are required.
reminded us of a previous
time that we spoke about it.
After everyone had given his
or her opinion, one fella, who
had been quiet all the time
submitted his piece of profound
magic to the conversation,
and it went like this : “I
don't have a medical aid. I
CRIME RUN: Scenes from the SAPS Cluster crime programme in Dimbaza
all times,' said King police at the Dimbaza Complex about
spokesperson Captain Siphokazi crime in their area and how to
Mawisa.
prevent it.
Pamphlets were distributed in 'Police walked 4.5km from
the area and the King Cluster Polar Park, Dimbaza to the
Commander Brigadier Ngubelanga
addressed the community
Dimbaza police station,' said
FRIDAY 17 MARCH 2017 THE BUGLE 15
Ice Box and Klippies set for top place at Sunset Bowls
THE excitement is palpable and
expectations are high ahead of the final
round of the Pick ‘n Pay-sponsored
Sunset Bowls set for last night.
It will be a straight shoot-out for the final
positions with The Ice Box skipped by
PJ Mauer, in first place and Klippies
skipped by Bronwyn Penny fighting it
out for top spot.
Both teams are on 14 points going into
the final round with The Ice Box sitting
on a shot profit of plus 39 and Klippies
on plus 36.
Rhona Westmann of the Klippies team
said her side was wary of the Ice Box
side.
“The side and especially Rodney Vermaak
are bowling well so we have to
be at our very best,’’ she said.
Klippies have done well to fight their
way to the top after sitting in the top five
for most of the series while the Old
Dalian Union, who for a while were
sitting at the top, have now dropped to
fourth place, one position behind thirdplaced
the Fatcats. Both these sides are
on 12 points.
The TNT Junior team of Josh Turner,
Andrew Lentz and Ethan Grunewald,
playing in the event for the first time are
also on 12 points and in fifth place
Don't Say This To A Cop
1. I can't reach my license unless you hold
my beer.
2. Sorry, Officer, I didn't realize my radar
detector wasn't plugged in..
3. Aren't you the guy from the Village People?
4. Hey, you must've been doin' about 125
mph to keep up with me! Good job!
5. You're not gonna check the trunk, are you?
6. I pay your salary!
7. So, uh, you on the take, or what?
8. Gee, Officer! That's terrific. The last officer
only gave me a warning, too!
9. Do you know why you pulled me over?
Okay, just so one of us does.
10. I was trying to keep up with traffic. Yes, I
know there is no other car around-that's how
far ahead of me they are.
11. Well, when I reached down to pick up my
bag of money from the bank robbery, my gun
fell off my lap and got lodged between the
brake pedal and the gas pedal, forcing me to
speed out of control.
12. Hey, is that a 9 mm? That's nothing
compared to this .44 magnum.
Catch The Rabbit
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD),
The FBI, and the CIA are all trying to prove
that they are the best at apprehending
criminals. The President decides to give
them a test. He releases a rabbit into a forest
and each of them has to catch it.
The CIA goes in. They place animal
informants throughout the forest. They
question all plant and mineral witnesses.
After three months of extensive
investigations they conclude that rabbits do
not exist.
The FBI goes in. After two weeks with no
leads they burn the forest, killing everything
in it, including the rabbit, and they make no
apologies. The rabbit had it coming.
The LAPD goes in. They come out two hours
later with a badly beaten bear. The bear is
yelling: "Okay! Okay! I'm a rabbit! I'm a rabbit!"
followed by the Central side also on 12
points.
Last week early rain threatened to
disrupt but by the time players took to
the greens it had pretty much cleared –
again a gift from the Gods.
Unlike the preliminary rounds where two
games were played each Thursday over
seven ends, the final round will be just
one game with 14 ends played.
The highlight of last nights event was
the prizegiving which is held after the
final round. It is always well attended
with each team member receiving a
prize.
It will also be a sad farewell to Sandy
and Tony Elliott who for years have
convened the event with Sandy organising
the teams and Tony seeing to the
scoring.
