The seven core international human rights treaties are the International Covenant on Civil <strong>and</strong> Political Rights (ICCPR),<br />

International Covenant on Economic, Social <strong>and</strong> Cultural Rights (ICESCR), the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms<br />

of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), the Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against <strong>Wo<strong>men</strong></strong> (CEDAW),<br />

the UN Convention against Torture (CAT), the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) <strong>and</strong> the Migrant Workers<br />

Convention (MWC).<br />

2. Examples of optional protocols<br />

• Second Optional Protocol to the ICCPR aiming at the abolition of the death penalty.<br />

• Optional Protocol to the CRC on the sale of children, child prostitution <strong>and</strong> child pornography.<br />

• Optional Protocol to the CAT aiming to establish a system of regular independent visits to places where people are<br />
