A Mission of Giving<br />
<strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> recognizes that we cannot be everything to all<br />
people, but we would like to be “something” for some people.<br />
We want to represent hope for a family facing significant health<br />
challenges and provide the support they need to get through a very<br />
rough period in their lives. No matter the issues, we want to be known<br />
for always standing by families with sick children and our partner<br />
organizations who serve them.<br />
As you look to be “something” to somebody, we encourage you to treat<br />
each person you encounter gently and with compassion.<br />
Recognizing that as humans we are fragile and our hearts can be easily<br />
broken through a painful act or unkind word. Compassion is the emotion<br />
we experience when we become aware of, and feel the pain of others.<br />
Compassion allows us to shift our focus from ourselves and our own<br />
suffering to that of others, and to make an effort to relieve them from<br />
that suffering.<br />
And that is what this Spring/Summer Newsletter is all about — acts of<br />
compassion. All of you are helping our very fragile and most vulnerable<br />
families and their children. Nothing can be more welcoming than your<br />
thoughtful gifts, whether they are prayers, kind notes, or financial in nature,<br />
to help those who are less fortunate.<br />
As the years come and go, the compassion you have extended to others<br />
will continue to live on through those you brought hope and comfort to.<br />

Charitable Gift<br />
Annuities<br />
Payments You Can Rely On<br />
Charitable Gift Annuities (CGAs) are the most popular life-income gift<br />
arrangement available to donors today. Why are CGAs so appealing?<br />
Most gift annuity donors are very caring people who want to make a<br />
difference in their community. They are retired, want to increase their<br />
available cash, seek the security of fixed payments, and like to save<br />

Violence Prevention<br />
last July, CHI Mission and Ministry funded a one-year<br />
planning grant for <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> to address child<br />
abuse prevention in Douglas County. As a result of this<br />
grant, the Violence Prevention Coalition was formed. In<br />
the past nine months, the coalition has gathered participants<br />
from more than 30 Douglas County agencies and<br />
organizations to focus community efforts around child<br />
abuse prevention. Members come from public and private<br />
sectors, as well as the not-for-profit and faith-based<br />
communities. The coalition also continues to grow.<br />
Facilitating this planning process is Dr. Marcia Hall,<br />
PhD. Dr. Hall has been involved in violence<br />
prevention efforts for over 30 years and was the<br />
lead writer and consultant on the State of Oregon<br />
Violence Against Women Prevention Plan. She<br />
has also worked as a trauma counselor for<br />
children, teens and adults.<br />
The Coalition started the planning process by<br />
conducting a rapid assessment of community<br />
gaps and strengths in the area of child abuse<br />
prevention. They have spent several months<br />
gathering agency utilization data; seeking input<br />
from the community through public forums that have<br />
been held throughout the county and developing an<br />
anonymous phone line for the community to leave<br />
comments. understanding the current status of both the<br />
need and existing services has been essential to the<br />
development of the longer-term comprehensive plan.<br />
utilizing the social-ecological model as a framework, a<br />
framework which shows the interaction between the<br />
individual, relationship, community and societal factors of<br />

abuse and its prevention, the coalition refers to the World<br />
Health Organization’s Preventing Child Maltreatment<br />
Guide, the Oregon Violence Against Women Prevention<br />
Plan and the Department of Justice’s Community<br />
Strategies to Reduce Child Abuse and Neglect Report<br />
as guides for this process.<br />
To date, the Child Abuse Prevention Coalition has<br />
identified the need for and facilitated the training of eight<br />
additional Sexual Abuse Nurse Examiners (SANE),<br />
understanding the<br />
current status of<br />
both the need and<br />
existing services has<br />

development of the<br />

comprehensive plan.<br />
bringing the total to nine, to increase<br />
the capacity to respond to abuse<br />
situations. The coalition also provided<br />
funding to support the renovation of a<br />
room in <strong>Mercy</strong> Medical Center’s<br />
Emergency Department to provide a<br />
more appropriate and comforting place<br />
to care for children in trauma.<br />
In July 2011, the Coalition will begin<br />
the one-year design phase and start<br />
implementing strategies, including<br />
developing and conducting specific skill-<br />
building education for targeted high-risk<br />
children, youth and adults; repairing foster homes to<br />
increase foster care capacity; developing a multi-disciplinary<br />
interagency coalition; policy and protocol development<br />
focused on prevention capacities and capabilities;<br />
conducting interagency trainings; creating a deferral to<br />
parenting class program for parents in lieu of truancy fines;<br />
and conducting media and social media campaigns with<br />
peer-to-peer messaging. The Child Abuse Prevention<br />
Coalition is eager to put into place a model for longlasting,<br />
sustainable community change in Douglas County.

<strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> kicks off dental clinics in the<br />
Riddle School District.<br />
Thanks to Sylvia and students from uCC, the first dental clinic saw almost 100 children! This was a great start to a<br />
very much needed service for our Douglas County children.<br />
About Sylvia and the Dental program<br />

Energetic, dynamic and committed to prevention. These are some of the best words to describe Sylvia Simpson,<br />
<strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong>’s new dental health liaison and dental clinic coordinator.<br />
Sylvia and her husband Tracy, a former Myrtle Creek resident, recently moved to Roseburg with their two children,<br />
after both retiring from careers in the Air Force.<br />
As a new recruit, Sylvia signed up to become a dental tech. In this role, she worked closely with military families and<br />
found her focus of prevention. Sylvia was then selected to attend dental hygienist school and became a<br />
registered dental hygienist. Over the years, she really made the most of her training both in her profession and in the<br />
military, and prior to her retirement, she was the superintendent of the Dental Squadron at her base in Mountain<br />
Home, Idaho.
The Air Force’s loss is truly our community’s gain.<br />
With a heart for teaching prevention, the opportunity to head up <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong>’s new dental initiative is a<br />
perfect fit.<br />
Why the focus on dental health?<br />
In a needs assessment conducted by the Healthy kids Outreach Program (HkOP), children reported tooth pain as<br />
the third most prevalent health problem, following colds and flu.<br />
lead by Sylvia, <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong>’s first dental clinics kicked off in Douglas County Schools this past spring. At the<br />
first dental screening, 91 children were screened for existing dental issues. Several students were identified who<br />
needed immediate care from a dentist; several more were scheduled for sealants. All of the children who attended<br />
the screenings received a fluoride varnish and education on the proper way to brush and floss their teeth.<br />
“The goal of our dental clinics is to provide kids with the tools they need for prevention and to ultimately make<br />
more costly treatments in the future unnecessary,” says Sylvia.<br />
