The Big Game
It was the championship game,
And almost the whole town came.
We were playing our archenemy,
The Lincoln Park Lenape.
It was the bottom of the ninth inning,
And we weren’t winning.
We were down by one,
And knew what had to be done.
There were two outs,
But never any doubts.
First up was Lindsay,
And then it was me.
Third was Jenny,
And then it was Kelsey.
Lindsay got a single,
And heard the crowd jingle.
A smile appeared on her face,
As she stole second base.
A tingle went down my spine,
As I hit it down the right field line.
Lindsay came around to score.
And it sure wasn’t a bore.
Then without any trouble,
Jenny hit a double.
She moved me to third,
Where I was as alert as a bird.
All this suspense,
Was making me tense.
For, I knew that I was the winning run,
That would start all the fun.
Staying nice and tall,
The pitcher released the ball.
It was low,
And bounced off the catcher’s toe.
I broke from third base,
Like a detective who just found the answer to a case.
Without a care,
I flung my body into the air.
And the Lenape coach threw a fit,
As I slid under the catcher’s mitt.
