My hair is curly like tangled vines.
My fingers are long like my grandfather’s.
My heart holds love that is impossible to describe.
My braces are silver like train tracks.
My glasses are stylish like today’s fashion.
Our Friends- the Circles
There have been reports of giant round
tires rolling around in the city and heading over
to New Jersey. They’ve been rolling right over
cars and buildings. They are moving so fast,
about 30 miles per hour. So watch out.
They have a circumference of 1,570
feet, a diameter of 500 feet, and a radius of half
as much, 250 feet. The wheels are bigger than
almost every building. There have been a lot of
complaints about these tires, saying we should
just get rid of all circles!
Let’s hope we can get rid of these giant
tires before people actually start thinking about
getting rid of circles.
Cirgals
Once upon a time in the 1970’s there were three
gangs. The king of the land was named Cirgals, he controlled
the gangs and the land. The first gang was called the Radius
Rockets. They were short with short hair. The second gang
was called the Circumference Comets. They were round and
had thick hair. Finally, the last gang was called the Diameter
Dangers. They were tall and had long hair.
All the gangs loved to eat pie, except in Cirgals’
world where pie was spelled pi. They had a tradition in
which all three gangs had a contest in the arena. They had a
math contest to see who should own the arena.
In the past years the Radius gang had won, so they
got a two over the right shoulder of their symbol. This stands
for a crown – Radius Squared. They would never have won
if it weren’t for the pi they had eaten before the contest.
Because of this, the arena is called Pi Times Radius
Squared. This is the story of the three gangs of Cirgals’
world.
Soccer
Soccer is fun; you shoot, you score. It’s not about winning
Or losing, but how you play the game.
It’s rough; it’s competitive
But if you’re skilled it won’t matter. Why is offense given
the spotlight
When defense does the work?
Soccer is a team effort; one player doesn’t make a team.
Winning isn’t everything in soccer,
Just your team’s reputation.
Losing helps you win by learning from mistakes.
Skilled players still use the basic four.
Defense is the backbone of a team.
Effort is key; without it the team is useless.
Your team is judged by your reputation
And the way your team plays.
Win or lose?
Skilled players don’t care.
The whole team shares the guilt when a goal is scored.
The key of winning is trying one’s best
And scoring the goals.
Interview with Mrs. Circle of Geo, Metry
Q: Why did you choose to live in Geo?
A: I absolutely LOVE Geo! It has many young and new features that make my children, Ray Dias and
Ay Rea very happy! They play many sports that are kid-friendly for my young little “Cheerios,” such as basketball,
baseball, soccer, ping-pong, lacrosse, and tennis.
Q: What is you husband’s job that provides you with all of this round fortune?
A: My husband, Mr. Circle, works as a dye and woodworker at Circumf Erence, a ruler shop. This may
seem like an easy job to you, but it is actually very hard. Circumf Erence sells rulers that go up to 60 meters
long. His company lengthens the height of the rulers, and they color them, too! It takes my husband twice as
long as Ray Dias, our son, to dye a meter! This is probably because Ray Dias is short, and moves on his.
Q: What was you maiden name before you married Mr. Circle?
A: My maiden name was Circle Cutin Half.
Q: Why did you name your daughter Ay Rea?
A: I named my daughter Ay Rea because she loves to measure things, such as length and width, and Ay
Rea seems like a smart name for that type of hobby she has.
Q: What are your children’s hobbies?
A: Well, Ay Rea loves to eat pi, at the same time as making a replica doll of Ray Dias, her brother.
Q: What about Ray Dias? What are his hobbies?
A: Oh! Whoopsies! Sometimes Ay Rea a gives me a feeling that makes my life so whole that I forget
about her little brother, Ray Dias! Well, Ray Dias is a smart little boy, although sometimes he does only half
of what he is supposed to do. What he makes is a “dye a meter,” as he calls it. He never completely dyes the
whole thing. One day he does half, and then the next he does the same thing again with Ay Rea as his helper to
dye the other meter! When Ay Rea helps Ray Dias, he can fully dye a meter!
Is McDonalds Good for America?
I strongly believe that McDonalds is a good thing for America. I am qualified to discuss this topic for many reasons.
First, I have been to many McDonalds restaurants and have seen how many good things that they do. Second,
I have thoroughly researched this topic and have determined that the restaurant chain is good for America.
In this paper I will have about ten different reasons why McDonalds is good for America. Some of the reasons
why McDonalds is good for America include that they create many jobs, sell affordable food, and sell a variety
of food at low prices.
First, McDonalds creates many jobs not just domestically, but around the world. McDonalds employs about
390,000 people in the United States alone and 1.5 million people globally. Since McDonalds is able to employ
this many people while being profitable, people around the world must eat their food a lot.
Another major thing is that McDonalds pays an astonishing amount of taxes to the United States government
and governments globally. In 2007 McDonalds paid approximately 1.25 billion dollars in taxes and approximately
1.8 billion dollars in taxes last year. This represents nearly a 50% increase from 2007 to 2008. This
money goes toward funding many government projects, such as public schools and defense.
When you think about McDonalds, one of the first things that comes into your head is the affordability. Mc-
Donalds provides food at low prices. Many customers eat at McDonalds to save money. McDonalds provides a
dollar menu, which allows you to get certain foods for only one dollar. This helps many people purchase meals
at a low cost.
McDonalds also provides a variety of food at a low cost to people. McDonalds’ menu ranges from burgers and
chicken nuggets to salads and breakfast sandwiches. Many people, poor or not, eat at McDonalds because of its
low prices. This is just another reason why McDonalds is good for America. McDonalds is able to be a global
company because of its low prices. McDonalds is so successful that it has over 31,000 restaurants in 119 countries
and is on six continents.
McDonalds does not just make jobs by hiring people. McDonalds creates indirect jobs. Many of those jobs
occur in the farming industry. Many people are employed because of the demand for certain foods that McDonalds
creates, and with more demand farmers make more food and then hire more people.
Many people who can afford to eat at other, more expensive, places choose not to. Many choose not to eat at
those places because the McDonalds food tastes better than food from other restaurants. Many, if not all people
in this room, have eaten at McDonalds at one time or another. There is another reason why people who can afford
to eat at more expensive places than McDonalds choose not to. Those people choose to eat at McDonalds
because McDonalds is fast. At McDonalds you can drive up to the restaurant, order you food, pick it up, and
leave within five minutes.
Despite all of the positive things McDonalds has, it like many other companies has flaws. It is a widely known
fact the McDonalds food is bad for you. I believe that McDonalds is being unfairly treate d about this issue.
First, McDonalds recommends that people do not eat their food more than one a week. It is not a coincidence
that the same people angry with McDonalds for making them fat eat at McDonalds more than once a week.
This is not fair for McDonalds. Also, McDonalds is not being treated fairly in that if you eat anything in

excess you can become sick. This is true for anything, even fruits and vegetables. If you eat too many
oranges you are eating too much vitamin C, which can impair your vision.
17
McDonalds is also faced with an issue of killing animals for their food. I believe that it is absurd to blame
McDonalds for killing the animals for their food. Even if McDonalds did not exist there still would be
great amounts, if not more, animals being killed. McDonalds, which kills many animals instead of smaller
companies killing the same amount or more, is better than having many small companies kill the animals.
McDonalds is better because little, if not any, of the food goes to waste. This is true because if there is
not as much demand in one area for a certain food McDonalds can transport the food to another area with
higher demand for the product, where as smaller companies might let that food go to waste.
One last supposed negative of McDonalds is that they use excessive amounts of paper for packaging their
foods. I again believe that this accusation against McDonalds is absurd. Yes, it is true that McDonalds
uses paper to package their foods. However, this is an invalid argument because many other companies
use paper in their products or to package their products. Companies that make books use hundreds of
sheets of paper for one book, but people are bothered about the fact that McDonalds uses one sheet of
paper or one cardboard box per product. Even though McDonalds’ patrons have a few complaints, that is
what comes with being a big company.
Even though McDonalds has its negatives, its positives outweigh the negatives. McDonalds is fast and
cheap, which is what makes it successful. McDonalds contributes more to American society than it takes
away.
Dear President Obama,
Dear Mr. President,
Today is no different than another. Each passing moment is another one lost. The sorry state of
our domestic and foreign affairs need to be looked at this moment. I agreed with you on almost all the
issues you spoke about in the campaign, but America needs you to act right now.
As everyone knows our economy is the worst it’s been in our lifetime. Our unemployed rate is
through the roof and the stock market is almost as low as the income of American car companies. What
you spoke about in the campaign about regulation, middle class tax cuts, new green jobs and a bail out
for the auto industry are all very important things that should be done.
I’m an 11-year-old kid. I don’t want a failing economy when I grow up. I want a world that is
clean, and I want a health care system that works! I want a world of peace. I want a good economy.
I write this letter today not as a 6th grader, not as a resident of New Jersey, but I write as an
American - an American who refuses to give up hope and refuses to lower his full potential. But Mr.
President if you don’t follow through on your campaign promises, I might have to. The American
dream is greater than it’s ever been. That glimpse of light and hope is irresistible and I see it right now.
But the path to get there has shrunk and it is your job- you said- to get prosperity and bring it back
safely to future generations.
So, Mr. President, I write to you to answer your call to a new spirit, a new era of sacrifice so we
can bring back more prosperity and freedom to future worlds. God Bless you and may God bless the
United States of America.
18
I am a 6th grade student currently attending the
Morristown-Beard Prep School. My name is Tyler Smith.
As an American citizen, I am proud of my country for
electing you as our president. It is a truly historic event.
This election shows how far our country has come.
The economy has taken a turn for the worse in the
past year. It is in all of the newspapers every day. Although
my family did not suffer any loss, we know that many
Americans have. I hope that with bringing much needed
change, you can lead America out of its crisis.
Sincerely,
Tyler Smith
Things Borrowed From Ancient Rome
The U.S. founding fathers learned of and borrowed many things from the Roman
Republic. This includes consuls, which we are somewhat like our president, except
in Rome there were two consuls, so no one person would get too much power.
Consuls only served for one year, but they ran the city and army. Also, there
were three parts to Rome’s government, just like there are three branches in our government.
The Romans had magistrates, Senate, and Assemblies and Tribunes compared to
our federal court system, president, and congress.
We also borrowed the word “veto,” Latin for “I forbid.” Today our presidents
can veto a bill. Also, just like in the Roman Republic we have a civic duty, because if
we don’t participate, our government can’t work. Just like the Romans, we have laws to
make sure one person or branch of government doesn’t get too powerful.
The Roman Senate and the Assemblies and Tribunes met, just as our Congress
does today.
The Outsiders
There once was a boy named Ponyboy
Who lived in a gang with his homeboys.
He was a Greaser
Against the Socs, who were meaner
Now Pony had a friend, you see
His name was Johnny, who couldn’t hurt a bee.
But the day the Socs had Johnny beat,
He carried a pocket knife after feeling the rivalry heat
When Johnny and Pony were spotted by Socs, one day
They didn’t have the choice to run away.
It looked like Pony’s life would have its last day.
But Johnny gave him a stab
And that old Soc fell as if he fell out of a cab.
The two Greasers had to run away
Or else the cops would get them in disarray
So they ran to the mountains that were so far away
That no one could ever catch ‘em if they stayed for days.
Now the rest of the story you must read because I’m no re-writer in anyway
You better read the book yourself one day!
He was a player and a b-baller indeed
He liked basketball and that was cool about him
by Jon Schreer
One if the most important ideas behind the founding of our country, is our democratic
government. Our government today can be traced back to Ancient Rome. The
Romans never had a written constitution like we do, but our idea for three branches of
government is similar to the model that they used in 400 B.C.E.
The patricians created a government with three parts. Every part had its own
rights, power, and privileges. Their government had the magistrates, senate, and assemblies.
This plan allowed people of all different classes to have a say in their government.
It also had restrictions called checks and balances to prevent any one part from getting
too strong and overpowering the others.
The Roman government expected its people to participate. Although everyone
was not allowed to vote, everyone was expected to carry out his civic duty in some way.
Our Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches resemble the Roman plan.
Finally, many of our laws are based on this time period as well. The law of the
12 tables that protected the rights of all Romans is similar to our laws.
I also hope that you can do something about our health care because people cannot afford
health care and are losing a lot of money. Also, hopefully you can get us out of the Iraq War. If you do
get us out, just get us out safely.
I hope that you change so much in our world! I hope you do a great job for our country and
help our country. I think you will do a great job and help our country!
If I Were A Founding Father- Benjamin Franklin
36
I, Nathaniel Franklin, was born on January 17, 1706, in colonial Boston. I grew up in a very poor
Puritan household. My family could only afford one year of school for me. I ended up teaching myself
to read and write because I loved to learn. When I was fifteen, one of my many brothers started The New
England Courant. Newspaper work piqued my interest. Then when I was seventeen, I ran away to Philadelphia.
My Dad, Josiah, was a soap maker and candle maker. He had eighteen children with two wives. I
was the ninth of eleven kids my dad had with his second wife, my mom. Then when I was twenty-two I
had my first and only son, William Franklin.
Times were changing. I gave a lot to the new nation. I invented a lot of items because I loved
tinkering and solving problems. I invented the first freestanding stove, the Franklin stove. This stove was
a lot warmer than a stove built into the wall. I suspect that it will be used for years to come. I invented
the bifocals to help people like me with vision issues. I also invented the two-faced clock. One face
measured the seconds, and the other face measured the minutes and hours. Another thing that I invented
was the swim fin. I made the swim fin by ripping the feet off a duck and tying them to my feet. The most
shocking thing I did was to put a key on a kite and fly it in a thunderstorm. That led to my invention,
the lightning rod. This invention prevented people’s houses and city buildings from catching on fire by
absorbing the energy from a lightning bolt.
The governor of Pennsylvania sent me to London to get printing equipment. He double-crossed
me, and I ended up staying several months stuck in London. I spent those months staying with a friend.
That friend ended up becoming my wife. We returned to Philadelphia where I continued my work in
many areas. I believed that political order should encourage power based on worthiness, honor and hard
work. In another part of my life, I lived in England for fifteen years as a spokesman for all colonies. I was
a natural philosopher. I also was a politician and a statesman. In government meetings, I was the one
who just could not stay serious and dull; I was full of life, even as I aged.
I believed in good works. If God loved all of his creatures, the only way to show
gratitude was to serve your fellow man. I persuaded the assembly of lawmakers to put aside a fair amount
of money for defense. At the time, the assembly was Quaker-dominated. I also ended up going to France
and trying to get the French to fight with us in the revolutionary war. I was always looking for ways to
expand the colony.
One of the ways I expanded the colony was sharing the news with everyone. That news was in the
most popular newspaper in all the colonies, The Pennsylvania Gazette. Back when I was fifteen I really
wanted to write for the newspaper, so I wrote letters to my brother’s newspaper in the name of a widow,
Silence Dogood. Then I came out with the Poor Richard’s Almanac. That was almost as popular as the
Holy Bible. It contained odds and ends, like the moon schedule and the weather forecast and it even explained
when the ocean tide would be high or low.
When I was forty-eight, I retired to live off the income from my business, which was managed by
others for twenty years. On April 17, 1790, I, Nathaniel Franklin, came to the end of my illustrious life.
Inspired by the short story “The Most Dangerous Game”

Steve and Joe
44
One day, a long time ago, on a round planet on a circular
street there lived a circle named Steve. He lived in a town
of loops and wheels where only circles lived, until one day,
a square family moved into Steve’s neighborhood. This was
very unusual because until then shapes tended to live separately
with their own kind. That square family did not fit in. They
stuck out in the crowd.
When Steve got to school and saw the square in the
hall, he stared at him for a long time. Later on that day at
recess, the square sat alone on the steps. Steve decided to go
over to him. He sat down next to the square and said, “Hi, my
name is Steve. What’s yours?” The square looked at him and
said, “I am Joe.”
They talked for a while and then Steve said, “Do you
want to play ball with me and my friends?” Joe said that he
would, and Steve took him to the field and introduced him to
the other circles. Steve’s friends did not want to play with Joe
at first, but when they got to know him, they liked him a lot.
Steve yelled out “Let’s play ball!” and everyone had a great
time.
At the end of the game Joe thanked Steve for including him.
Steve realized that it doesn’t matter if you have circumference,
radius, and area or if you have length and width;
it’s what is inside that really counts.
The Line Who Became a Circle
One day there was a line that lived in a place called Linetown. His name was Mr. Line and he was a
lineman on the Linetown football team. One day they had a game against the Squareville team, and Mr. Line
was ready to play.
Later, in the 3rd quarter of the game, Squareville was on offense. Mr. Line was called in to play on the
defensive line. The Squareville players were really tough and strong. So when the quarterback called hike, the
offensive line rushed forward, knocking Mr. Line down. All of a sudden everything went black and Mr. Line
passed out.
Mr. Line woke up in the hospital with doctors looking down at him. One of them said, “You took one
nasty fall there, kid.”
“I agree,” another said. Mr. Line was to stay in the hospital for four days. Mr. line was upset; he would
have to miss practice and he felt so much pain.
Four days later and Mr. Line was out of the hospital, the doctors advised that he could not play football
for at least three months so that his injury could heal. As he was walking home, people were staring at him.
Some laughed and some had weird expressions on their faces. When Mr. Line got home he looked in the mirror,
and Wow! to his surprise, he was a circle! No wonder people laughed. However, he wasn’t laughing. He
was so upset. He thought he would never show his face in public again.
The next day some people had said that he should move to Circle City. He thought about it, but he
decided to go back to the hospital. When he got to the hospital, he asked the doctors if he could have surgery.
Unfortunately, the doctors told him that there was no way to perform surgery to return back to a line. So Mr.
Line made his decision, he quit the football team and moved to the Circle City.
In Circle City Mr. Line found a wonderful life. Nobody made fun of him. He got a job as a car tire and
he lived happily ever after as a circle named Mr. Line.
Keep Practicing Day After Day
I watch them play everyday
I wonder what it will take to be like them someday
They are so skilled they give me the chills
And they say, “Keep practicing, day after day.”
The Storm
The Wind
Moving through the air
It is calm and graceful
It slowly picks up grains of sand one by one
It gently rustles the leaves on the palm trees
Whoosh, quietly goes the wind
Moving and swirling
Gracefully it moves about the air
Grains of sand are floating in the air
Rustling the leaves and bushes
Whoosh, the wind is never stopping
Swirling paths of wind fly by
Air moves quickly while
The wind carries it along
Floating all around me
Leaves of all colors play in the wind
Wind is everlasting
by Kathryn Movsovich
Nimbostratus clouds approaching
The thunder cracks in the distance
The increasing winds force me to hike harder
My knees are on the rail
Looks like I might be ridin’ some waves
‘Cause I know a storm’s brewing
Clouds lay over our heads
Cracks run down the sides of people’s boats
Increasing tides push my boat backwards
My boat is on an angle
Waves crash down as loud as the thunder
Crackling in the sky
Heads spinning round and round like a whirlpool
Boats smash, and coaches tow the kids in
Backwards sailors are screaming
On land I can see the parents looking worried
The sky suddenly becomes blue as the clouds dart away.
I think to myself, just another storm in Bay Head!
