The Glenbrook girls
looked like they were in
a big hurry to get to the
finals of the Illinois State
High School Hockey
Championships.
By the start of the third
period of their semifinal
game with Fenwick on
March 6 at The Edge Ice
Arena in Bensenville, they
had activated the running
clock. Fifteen minutes later,
they skated off the ice
with a 7-0 victory.
“I’m really proud of these
girls,” Glenbrook coach
Steve Hamelin said. “Our
goal was to make the upper
division (after winning the
lower level Founder’s Cup
title last season). This is an
opportunity for them, their
schools and their community.”
The nucleus of the team
— which will take a 21-1-
2 record to the state final
game against defending
champion Loyola Academy
— comes from Glenbrook
South.
Players from Glenbrook
North include Nicole
Knudson, Jojo Chobak,
Chloe Carroll, Eleni Tasiopoulos,
Sophie Sperber
and Koby Wilcox.
One player, All-State
forward Hannah Jensen, is
a junior at Regina Dominican.
Jensen and five other All-
State players — forwards
Caitlin Schneider, Katerina
Poulos and Knudson; defenseman
Allie Karakosta;
and goaltender Chobak —
were the major contributors
to the compelling semifinal
conquest.

Schneider scored three
goals. Jensen contributed
two goals and an assist.
Knudson added a goal
and two assists, Karakosta
scored a goal and
Poulos assisted on two
goals.
At the other end of the
ice Chobak stopped 22
shots, several of which
were difficult saves.
“In the past we’ve had
some close games with
them so I had no idea what
to expect,” Chobak said.
“It was important for us to
get that big early lead.”
Chobak had reason to be
concerned. In a game on
Feb. 25, Glenbrook had to
go all-out to secure a 3-2
victory against Fenwick
(11-8-5).
But this time, goals by
Knudson, Karakosta and
Schneider put the state’s
top-ranked team on top,
3-0. By the end of the second
period, Glenbrook’s
lead had increased to 6-0,
activating the running
clock.
“Playing for the state
championship is a really
big deal,” Schneider said.
“This is my first year playing
high school hockey.
Allie, who is the other senior
on our team, told me
(before the season) ‘You
have to play, you have to
play.’
“I said ‘OK, I’ll do it’
and now I’m really glad I
did.”
Like Chobak, Hamelin
went into the contest very
aware of Fenwick’s capabilities.
“They were a team I was
concerned with,” said the
first-year head coach, who
was an assistant coach last
season. “They can score
goals.
“We kept it simple. We
have a lot of talent and
we’re much better as a
team than as individuals.
We moved the puck
around and created opportunities.
Caitlin showed
why she’s a special hockey
player and Jojo was stellar
in goal — her ground
game and positioning were
tremendous.”
