More ways to interact with the newspaper
CHRIS PULLAM
chris@glenviewlantern.com
Welcome to The
Glenview Lantern’s
third, and
final, edition of “Ways To
Interact With The Newspaper.”
Two weeks ago in this
space, I asked for Pet of
the Week submissions.
Now I have more than
30 submissions sitting in
my email, and I’m set for
nearly eight months.
Last week, I encouraged
readers to vote for Glenbrook
South and Loyola
Academy students during
our Athlete of the Month
contests, which pits every
Athlete of the Week from
all seven of our North
Shore publications against
each other, and I’m expecting
big things come
April.
So, what’s our topic this
week?
Letters to the Editor.
You’ll find three entries
(the most in my year as
editor!) across this twopage
spread.
Basically, this space is
reserved for residents who
want to discuss hot topics
with their neighbors using
our weekly medium.
Since The Lantern is, in
fact, a newspaper, I will
fact-check statistics. But I
will not censor opinions.
In order to submit a
Letter to the Editor, you
must reside in Glenview,
provide your first and last
name, keep your content
to fewer than 400 words,
and send to Chris@GlenviewLantern.com.
Let’s get the conversations
started!
An intriguing number from this week’s edition
Twelve local acts
competed over
the weekend at
Glenview’s Got
Talent, Page 3
letters
From Page 24
sisting. This points to a lack
of commitment to the ultimate
goal.
Instead of publishing
“feel good” outlines for
affordable housing, the
Village needs to model behaviors
that can be replicated
by private and public
entities. The Park Place
development sits directly
behind the fire station and
yet many firemen cannot
afford a house in Glenview.
Wouldn’t it be great if two
or three of those 26 units
were actually affordable?
The Bess Hardware location
is the other ‘appropriate
for affordable housing’
property recently purchased
by the Village and being
marketed by the Village.
The Village should work
with any potential developers
to incorporate 10 percent
of those units for affordable
housing extending the incentives
they have outlined
in the comprehensive plan.
If it does not, it will be a
clear flag that they are not
serious about making Glenview
a diverse and welcoming
community.
Glenview Resident
Resident oppose boating on
Lake Glenview
Boating might look like
a good idea, however, the
plan is unsafe and poses
considerable risk to people,
habitat and wildlife. No
on-site rescue boat. No one
supervising activities or
checking permits (except
occasionally). No one to
enforce the rules. The water
is not safe for swimming or
wading.
The Glenview Park
Board could not answer:
How many boats is too
many? What would prevent
large groups or classes?
How to keep people off the
islands? How to prevent
people from getting in and
out at other locations? How
to prevent people bringing
alcohol? How to monitor if
people where catching fish
and not releasing them?
How to prevent people from
harming wildlife? How to
know if people even had
permits? How to keep boaters
safe from hazards? How
to ensure the safety of wildlife
and habitat?
There will be conscientious
boaters and there will
also be those that do not
respect the rules and will
cause damage, it is naive to
think otherwise. The plan
now is to get a permit for
each boat, not boater. How
can you be sure that everyone
has read and understood
the rules if only the boats
need permits?
This is a small lake and
that puts extra stress on migrating
birds as they have
nowhere to hide or get away
from people. Some have
flown thousands of miles
and could have hundreds
more to go. They would be
flushed repeatedly and ultimately
tire, perhaps leading
to death.
One day at Lake Glenview
I saw a boy kicking
out the decorative panels on
the bridge. He didn’t stop
until I said something and
called the police, by then,
however, the damage was
done. While we hope people
follow the rules, every day I
see people who don’t think
the rules apply to them.
I’m an 18-year resident
of Glenview and naturalist
photographer. I have been
documenting the wildlife at
Lake Glenview since it was
built. I have seen Lake Glenview
evolve into a beautiful
natural area that is enjoyed
by people and wildlife alike.
I served four years on the
Natural Resource Committee
of Glenview. For the last
30 years I’ve worked with
The Nature Conservancy,
Lake Forest Open Lands,
The Chicago Botanic Garden,
Chicago Wilderness
and many other nature organizations.
I have experience
with nature and wildlife and
am not making these recommendations
lightly.
Respectfully,
