THE NORTHBROOK TOWER Northbrook native who wrote Hollywood films dies after long battle with ALS Scott Lew knew how to find the silver lining in anything, even after being diagnosed with ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. His outgoing personality was immediately evident to anyone who met him. He liked to crack jokes, as was shown in the first minutes of a documentary about his life, “Living With Lew,” produced in 2008. “There’s a nice flash of the bald spot there,” Lew joked in the film as he spun in his wheelchair. “Actually the cool thing about me becoming more and more gimpy is I really don’t care about my hair loss at all.” Such was the humor with which he faced his predicament. The screenwriter was diagnosed in 2003 with ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease. Lew, a Glenbrook North alum, died Feb. 25 at the age of 48 in his Valley Glen, Calif. home, after battling his illness for 14 years. “He was determined,” said Michael Lew, Scott’s father, “to achieve as much as he could, to do as much as he could and with Ann’s help he not only lasted for 15 years, he made two movies and wrote some TV programs. He achieved what some people don’t achieve in a lifetime.” Scott Lew took advantage of every day he had toward the end, submitting his last script in January.
