The <strong>Fuzzy</strong> <strong>Wuzzy</strong> <strong>Angels</strong> <strong>Commemorative</strong> <strong>Medallion</strong> is a symbol of Australia’s<br />

appreciation <strong>for</strong> the care and assistance extended by PNG civilians to Australian<br />

servicemen in Papua and New Guinea during World War II. Many Australians,<br />

wounded and suffering terrible illnesses, owe their lives to these civilians who<br />

came to be affectionately known as ‘<strong>Fuzzy</strong> <strong>Wuzzy</strong> <strong>Angels</strong>’.<br />

The in<strong>for</strong>mation in this <strong>for</strong>m:<br />

• is sought, and required, to assess your eligibility <strong>for</strong> the <strong>Fuzzy</strong> <strong>Wuzzy</strong><br />

<strong>Angels</strong> <strong>Commemorative</strong> <strong>Medallion</strong>;<br />

• will be used <strong>for</strong> the purpose of assessing your claim <strong>for</strong> the medallion;<br />

• may be released by the Australian Government to the Papua New Guinea<br />

Government, religious leaders or village/tribal leaders, where necessary,<br />

in assessing your claim <strong>for</strong> the medallion; and<br />

• will be held by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, but may be released<br />

to the Australian War Memorial <strong>for</strong> the purpose of historical research.<br />

NOTE: The <strong>Fuzzy</strong> <strong>Wuzzy</strong> <strong>Angels</strong> <strong>Commemorative</strong> <strong>Medallion</strong> is not a part of the Australian<br />

Honours and Awards System. Eligibility <strong>for</strong> the medallion does not provide<br />

eligibility to any other entitlements from the Australian Government.<br />

• A living Papua New Guinea civilian who assisted Australian servicemen<br />

during World War II.<br />

• A surviving widow/widower of a Papua New Guinea civilian who assisted<br />

Australian servicemen during World War II.<br />

For the purposes of issuing the <strong>Fuzzy</strong> <strong>Wuzzy</strong> <strong>Angels</strong> <strong>Commemorative</strong><br />

<strong>Medallion</strong> a <strong>Fuzzy</strong> <strong>Wuzzy</strong> Angel is a person who:<br />

• is an indigenous Papua New Guinean;<br />

• assisted Australian servicemen in what is now known as Papua New<br />

Guinea during World War II;<br />

• was no younger than 10 years old at the time of rendering assistance;<br />

and<br />

• was a civilian at the time of rendering assistance.<br />

Carriers, stretcher bearers, cooks, drivers, building labourers,<br />

maintenance workers on air strips<br />

For the purposes of issuing the medallion, a widow/widower of a <strong>Fuzzy</strong><br />

<strong>Wuzzy</strong> Angel is someone who was married (via Customary Marriage or<br />

Statutory Marriage) to a <strong>Fuzzy</strong> <strong>Wuzzy</strong> Angel who is now deceased.<br />

To be eligible to receive the medallion, a person must be a living <strong>Fuzzy</strong> <strong>Wuzzy</strong> Angel<br />

(as described above) or the living widow or widower of a <strong>Fuzzy</strong> <strong>Wuzzy</strong> Angel.<br />
