celebrate spring!
Wow! East Gwillimbury has come alive this Spring...
Just take a look through this issue and see all that we have to offer, gardening
and cleaning to spring specials and celebrations. We have a thriving business
community, don’t we? Not to mention a very generous one. Neighbours
helping each other, that’s what community spirit is all about.
I look forward to everything the season has to offer. From tending to the garden, spending hours
watching and photographing horses grazing on spring grass, and making plans for summer! As
for the magazine we are working on some new and exciting things... watch for updates.
I still can’t believe we have been doing this for 12 years... does anyone remember the very
beginning? It was originally called “The Business Bulletin” and we quickly removed ‘business’ as
it wasn’t just all about that. It was only 8 pages and that yellow paper, need I say more. It takes
time to evolve into something you can be proud of... and I am. I hope that you look forward to
each issue. When I meet someone within the community I usually hear, “Oh, it’s great! I read it
cover to cover”. Thank you to all our readers for your continued interest and to our advertisers that
have confidence in a local magazine!
This month is a special birthday in our home. Sam’s turning 16, it felt like only a few months ago
I wrote about her becoming a teenager! A few grey hairs have appeared since then (well more
than a few, I’m in denial). I wish her the most wonderful year; she’s fabulous, thoughtful, athletic
and so much fun to be with! Happy Birthday Sam.
Take care – Christine Benns, Editor
AUTHOR READING ANNE MICHAELS
Fugitive Pieces (1996) is Anne Michaels' popular first
novel. It reached number one on the bestseller list in
Canada and remained there for more than two years. The
novel has garnered a long list of Canadian and
international awards and has been made into a critically
acclaimed movie.
The Winter Vault (2009) is her long awaited second novel.
Set in both Canada and Egypt with flashbacks to post-war
Europe, it concerns two of the great engineering projects
of the last century; the moving of the great temple at Abu
Simbel in Egypt and the creation of the St. Lawrence
Seaway in Canada. It is also a love story. Intensely
moving and lyrical, The Winter Vault contains all the
elements for which Anne Michaels is celebrated.
Anne Michaels also wrote three highly acclaimed poetry
collections: The Weight of Oranges (1986), which won the
Commonwealth Prize for the Americas; Miner’s Pond
(1991), which received the Canadian Authors Association
Award and was shortlisted for the Governor General’s
Award and the Trillium Award; and Skin Divers (1999).
RECIPES from The Good Egg
T
hese tarts are filled with one of my favourite things – custard. Based on Portuguese
custard tarts, which are hard to find if you don’t live near a Portuguese bakery, these
tarts are best eaten the day they are made. Use the best farm-fresh eggs you can get your
hands on. You may be surprised at how easy it is to find fresh eggs around East Gwillimbury
- look for road-side signs. If you haven’t tried it before,
packaged puff pastry is easy to use and the tart shells
come out flaky and golden every time.
Rustic Custard Tarts
2 rolls (1 package) puff pastry, thawed in the fridge
2 cups milk
5 large egg yolks
1 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup all purpose flour
¼ tsp fine sea salt
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. You will need two 12-spot muffin pans.
Unroll the puff pastry sheets. Starting at the short end, roll each sheet into
a log. Slice each log into 12 even pieces.
On a well-floured board, roll out each piece very thin, about 5 inches in
diameter. Carefully tuck each piece of pastry into the muffin spots, forming
24 tart shells. Place in the refrigerator until the custard is ready.
Warm the milk over medium heat in a large saucepan.
Whisk the egg yolks, sugar, flour and salt together in a medium bowl.
When the milk begins to steam, but not boil, add ¼ cup hot milk to the egg yolk mixture, whisking quickly.
Add another ¼ cup hot milk into the egg yolk mixture.
Stir the tempered egg yolk mixture into the pan with the remaining hot milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring
constantly, until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes.
Remove the custard from the heat. Evenly distribute the custard into the prepared tart shells, about 2
tablespoons of custard per tart.
Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the custard has cooked and the tops begin to brown in spots. Remove from the
oven and allow to cool for 5 minutes. Remove the tarts from the pan and set on a wire rack to cool
completely. These tarts are best eaten within a day of baking. If they last longer than one day, keep covered
in the refrigerator.
Makes 24 tarts.
POETRY by Ken Gould
POETRY FLIES ON WINGS THAT SOAR
ABOVE THE PAGE TO ROAR IN SPACE
AND REAPPEAR IN ENDLESS FORMS
TO THOSE WHO BELIEVE
THAT WORDS ALONE CAN CREATE MAGIC
In 1957, a group of homeowners broke ground on
Morton Avenue in Sharon, and collectively worked at
building homes for their growing families. The
journey of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic
Elementary School began with these committed
families, and the desire that their children attend a
Catholic elementary school in the area.
The resolve which allowed these resilient folks to work
a full week at their full-time jobs and then bring them
to Sharon to build their future family homes on the
weekend, was transferred to building a two room
school house in 1959. Our Lady of Good Counsel
Elementary School was born. Subsequent additions
took place in 1960, 1964, and 1981 as the student
population grew from its original 61 students in 1959.
Over the past 50 years, the school has consistently
been blessed with superb community partnerships, an
active parent community, a strong bond between home
and church, a dedicated and talented teaching staff,
and a thoughtful, engaged student body. Evidence of
the many accomplishments are all around us, and all
who have had the privileged of being part of this
school community directly or indirectly are
encouraged to attend the 50th Anniversary Celebration
of an old friend and wonderful lady.
*ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS*
April 2010 | The Bulletin 11

We asked Susan...
Q: “I’m bored, can we redecorate my room? Has anyone experienced this over
the March Break?
A: Last month my daughter asked if we could redecorate her room to a more dramatic “tween” look and I was
perplexed with how this was going to play out. Luckily enough I was on Cityline – Décor Day recently and I
asked Mary Dobson, the guru of decorating “How do you handle working with your own daughter on a
decorating job?”
Mary suggested that since I was “in the business”, it would be difficult not taking the lead and she said that I
should listen to what my daughter had to say and let her have choices during the process.
To start, I would suggest flipping through decorating magazines and take some time to talk about style, from
modern to romantic, trendy to traditional, your tween will have fun discovering what constitutes her “favourite
look”. Really trendy colours for 2010 are metallics, navy, teal, cobalt, apple green complimented with yellow.
Gray has become the new neutral base for texture as well as colour.
Fabric and texture are an important part of decorating a room and velvet is becoming a big “trend” setter, the
shinier the better. We have seen many fabrics with raised patterns in bold colours and velvet textures as well as
very large floral designs becoming popular. The number one patterns are geometric designs such as squares and
circles. For a contemporary look, lean towards designs with tree branches and vines or the retro look with
lattice patterns.
There are a number of areas that need to be addressed such as the flooring, furnishings, bedding, draperies and
of course, the colour on the walls! Making these choices have to stand up to all activities such as hanging out
with their friends, doing homework, playing, talking
endlessly with their friends and having sleepovers.
Susan Crema-Martin
A tween room is their haven, their retreat and we know
that tweens are fickle. What they dig one day, they’ll
ditch the next. So it is important to talk through the
choices with your tween and get a good sense of what
they like in colours, styles and hone in on their look – not
yours. It is also a great time to get to know more about her
and a great way to help her get to know more about
herself. Your tween will love his/her room which makes
a statement about who they are and what they are like.
was represented by a team from Sharon &
Queensville Public Schools at the Timbits
Provincial Elementary School Curling
Championships in Cambridge. The team
was the youngest at the event with players
ranging from grade 2 to grade 6. It was a
tremendous learning experience, and the
team was thrilled to defeat a grade 7 team
from Parry Sound. Curling season is now
over, but the team is looking forward to next
year! Team members included Claire and
Charlie Randell, Josh and Sarah Mau, and
Grant Beetlestone. Coach, Cory Randell.
fitness
Put Some “Spring” in
Your Step
It’s no surprise how important physical activity and exercise are to our overall health ~ a stronger heart and lungs,
a reduced risk of cardiovascular and other diseases, and increased energy to name just a few valuable outcomes.
The big question becomes are we doing enough to reap these significant health benefits? Now that the snow is
off the ground, it’s time to head outside and make activity a priority this spring.
For any sort of physical improvements, you need to work your body harder than usual. Ideally you should be
participating in a moderate-intensity activity for a minimum of 30 minutes per day (e.g. walking, urban poling,
biking, swimming, and aerobic and exercise classes) to increase the health and function of your heart, lungs, and
circulatory system.
It always helps if you choose an activity that you feel comfortable doing or learning, but don’t let a little
insecurity keep you from trying something new. If not already the case, what’s important is to incorporate
physical activity into a part of your regular daily routine. Here are some tips to help you excel at your activity
of choice.
Warm it up. Your entire body needs to be gradually warmed up to prepare for the upcoming demands of the
aerobic activity. During a warm-up your heart rate gradually elevates so it can meet the increased need for
oxygen and your muscles gradually prepare to help you hit your peak performance. For the first five minutes,
start out slowly and then your overall workout will be much more effective.
Ramp it up. If you're looking for results you need to put the effort into the activity. While you don't want to
overdo it, you do want to get your heart rate elevated into its target zone. If looking for a beneficial outcome,
longer periods of moderately-intense workouts are most effective. Short periods of high-intensity training are
fine when integrated into a circuit training workout or when used for athletic training. The days of "no pain, no
gain" are gone, as too much intensity will only lead to soreness and burnout.
Chug-a-lug. The body depends on water for survival. If we don’t get enough water, our bodies won’t function
at an optimal level, especially when exercising. Keep yourself hydrated before, during and after activity.
According to the Mayo Clinic, when engaging in any moderate activity that makes you sweat, you should drink
1–3 cups of water to compensate for the loss. Those involved in more vigorous, intense activities should consider
sports drinks which replace sodium and electrolytes.
Slow it down. Just as your body needs to warm-up, it also needs a cool-down period. Take some time to
gradually let your heart-rate lower. Stopping aerobic activity abruptly can cause a number of problems and make
you feel light-headed.
18 The Bulletin | April 2010
by Kim Mortson

Stretch it out. It's always a good idea to stretch for a
few minutes after exercise and concentrate on the
muscles that have been used during the activity.
Muscles that remain flexible are far less likely to be
injured than ones that are tight.
Switch it up. If trying out a new activity, start with
small, realistic goals that lead to larger goals. Consider
keeping a journal to review how you’ve progressed and
to evaluate what does and
doesn’t work. Take pictures
of yourself to see how
you’ve changed over time.
And aim to connect with
your exercise on a deeper
level as opposed to
thinking it’s a “must-do” on
your long list of tasks.
Remember, every journey
begins with a first step.
hort happenings...
April is an exciting time in the garden, full of promise.
The early spring bulbs have used the food stored in
their underground reserves to get through the winter
and they are beginning to provide welcome splashes of
colour. In my garden it starts with snowdrops,
crocuses, scilla, grape hyacinths and other delicate
small bulbs then moves on to tulips, daffodils,
hyacinths and alliums.
Many of the most interesting and brilliant summer
flowers also store their food in bulbs, corms and tubers:
lilies, dahlias, gladioli, begonias, canna and calla lilies
and many others. These need to be planted in the
spring. On April 20th Nikola Warnock will speak at
the Mount Albert Garden and Horticultural Society
meeting on the topic “Garden Design with Bulbs,
Corms and Tubers”. Having seen Nikola’s wonderful
garden I know we’re in for a treat as she gives us ideas
on incorporating these diverse beauties into our
gardens and caring for them. We will also be holding
our annual photography competition at this meeting.
The junior gardeners will be transplanting cuttings and
seedlings that evening, in preparation for our Spring
Plant Sale on May 29th. They meet from 7 – 7:30pm
and welcome new members aged 6 – 16.
On Saturday, May 1st we will be out and about in the
six community gardens we maintain, getting started on
weeding, cleaning up and dividing plants which have
outgrown their space.
The Literacy Garden which has been created at the
Holland Landing Community Centre with the
assistance of a Trillium Foundation grant is almost
complete; the donated benches will be installed as soon
as the ground has thoroughly thawed. The opening
celebration will be held on May 15th from 11am
until 1pm.
Looking farther ahead, we are planning a bus trip to
two beautiful gardens: Plant Paradise Country Garden
in Albion, where we will have a guided tour and
catered lunch, and Lost Horizons Garden and Nursery
in Acton. The date is Saturday July 10th and the cost is
$50 per person. It promises to be a great day; we’d be
delighted to have you join us.
We are an enthusiastic group of gardeners, from
beginners to experienced, from all over East
Gwillimbury. We meet the third Tuesday of the month
from February to November at 7:30 pm at Mount
Albert Community Centre, 53 Main Street, Mount
Albert. We welcome visitors and new members.
Visitors pay just $2 per meeting.
Thank you
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of
you (and there are so many) who helped sell tickets,
gather silent auction items, donated food, time and
money as well as setting up and tearing down to make
the benefit for Mark & Connie Potter such an
overwhelming success.
Mark, Connie and their families, I know are touched by
all your generosity and once again Mount Albert
continues to show how very much they care when it
comes to helping others in need. You have indeed
touched their hearts and made us proud to be part of
such an amazing community.
THANK YOU ALL
Dean Sinclair and Cathy Morton
On February 27, at the Mount Albert Community
Center Cathy Morton and Dean Sinclair put on a
benefit dance/fundraiser for my son Mark Potter and
his family, he has terminal cancer and is on a clinical
drug trial in New York. Mark was born and raised in
Mount Albert and continues to reside here with his
wife Connie and their 2 sons
Dallas and Mark Jr.
The response from the town and
community was overwhelming
and close to 600 tickets were
sold with over 80 silent auction
gift donated. From the hall to the
music to the food and door
prizes, everything was donated. I
have lived in Mount Albert since
1979 and worked in town since
1989 and have always loved our
community. When Mark needed
help everyone was there and I am
so proud of this town.
Gearing
Up for Golf
Okay all you golf dreamers, it’s time to stop tormenting your house pets with your indoor practice.
Golf season is nigh and the ground frost will be all but a distant memory soon. All that planning and dreaming
over these winter months – and the new clubs you got from Santa – can soon be put into practice on the real
thing! Your vast green wonderland of peace and tranquility awaits.
The key to a successful season is different for each golfer but actively caring for your physical health, will give
you the best chances to achieve success.
Most golfers take more than 90 strokes – plus one or two extra practice swings for each stroke. It adds up – not
only the tally on the scorecard but also the toll on your body during the round from taking all those hacks – I
mean swings.
Mark Sharpe, C.P.G.A. Professional and Director of Golf at Pheasant Run Golf Course, says,
“Be concerned for your general health and fitness. What you eat and how you exercise is all a collective part
of performance in playing golf – and being comfortable on the golf course.”
There are a few key things to remember on the course. Do take a few minutes to do a full body warm-up
(stretches and a brisk walk) before hitting your first ball. This is especially important in cooler weather. It’s also
important to stay loose throughout the round.
If you are walking the course, make sure that your carry bag is properly fit to your body (your local CPGA pro
can help). Adjust the two shoulder straps so that the bag’s weight is borne not only by your shoulders but also
by your hips – the bag should rest just below the small of your back. This will help you avoid undue stress on
your lower back, neck and shoulders – before you even take a swing.
The golf swing itself can be a recipe for back pain and injury. Even the touring pros sometimes develop back
injuries on the driving range or on the course, and they’ve got better swings than we do. That means it’s even
more important for amateur golfers to develop sound swing technique and exercise regime to help avoid injury.
Be mindful that among the many body parts involved in the golf swing, the lower back is at particular risk. This
risk increases for golfers who don’t have much flexibility in their mid-back (thoracic spine) or in their hips
(or both).
Clinically speaking, the golf swing is essentially the torquing of the upper body against the lower body. This
action puts a tremendous level of stress on the intervertebral discs in your lower back. While this torquing
action does help you hit the ball a long way, the tremendous stress of this action on the lower back – during a
singular instance or spread over the course of hundreds of swings – can cause painful or even debilitating injury
to a disc(s). Injuries range from tightness in the lower back (golfers who pop an Advil at the 10th hole!) All the
way to herniations and sprains (golfers who can’t stand up straight).
by Melanie Jung

The good news is that injuries to your lower back are
preventable. In addition to appropriate stretching and
core-strengthening regimens, a good way to protect your
back is to pull your navel in towards your spine while you
swing and keep your lower back in a ‘neutral’ position by
bending at your hips.
If you have suffered an injury playing golf, there’s more
good news – it’s treatable and there’s no need to suffer
long term. There’s professional help available. The
earlier a pain syndrome or injury is correctly diagnosed
and treated, often the quicker the recovery – and the
sooner you’ll be enjoying your time on the golf course.
Your local CPGA pro can help you prevent injury to your
scorecard. And your local Registered Physiotherapist can
help you prevent – and recover from – pain and injury to
your body, keeping you out on the course.
Actively care for your physical health this year. You’ll
give yourself the best chance for success on and off the
golf course.
tax
Tax Breaks
If a parent or grandparent (over 65) lives with you,
even if they are not your dependent.
If, at any time in the tax year, you (either alone or with another person) maintained a dwelling and you or your
spouse's or common-law partner's parent or grandparent aged 65 or older lived with you, you may be able to claim
the Caregiver Amount tax credit. This non-refundable tax credit is reduced when the net income of the parent
or grandparent exceeds a certain level.
The parent or grandparent must at the time have been a resident of Canada, and the tax credit is not available if
they were just visiting you.
This tax credit is also available when certain other dependent relatives are living with you (see below), but for
other relatives the tax credit is not available unless the relative is dependent on you due to mental or physical
infirmity.
If you are able to claim the caregiver amount for a dependent relative, and the dependent is eligible for the
disability tax credit, any unused portion of this credit may be transferable to you. If you cannot claim the
caregiver amount because the dependent's income is too high, you may still be able to transfer any unused portion
of the disability tax credit.
Tax credit may be available if dependent relative lives with you.
If, at any time in the tax year, you (either alone or with another person) maintained a dwelling where you and a
dependent relative lived, you may be able to claim the Caregiver Amount tax credit. The dependent must have
been 18 years of age or over, and dependent on you due to a mental or physical infirmity. This tax credit is
reduced if the dependent's income exceeds a certain level. The dependent must be your child or grandchild, or
you or your spouse or common-law partner's sibling, niece, nephew, aunt, or uncle (for parent or grandparent see
above). They must have been a resident of Canada, and the tax credit is not available if they were just
visiting you.
Eligible Dependant
An individual who cannot claim the married or common-law credit may claim the eligible dependant credit for a
wholly dependent person if all the following conditions are met at a point in time (the relevant time) during
the year:
1. The individual must not have a spouse or common law partner, or, if so, can neither have supported, nor lived
with, nor have been supported by his or her spouse or common-law partner.
2. The individual must support a dependant and live with the dependant in a self-contained domestic
establishment (the home) that he or she maintains (either alone or jointly with another person).
3. At the relevant time the supported person must be:
i) Related to the taxpayer by blood marriage, common-law partnership or adoption;
iii) Resident in Canada, unless the person is a child of the taxpayer; and,
iv) Wholly dependent for support on the individual, or on the individual and other person(s) who maintain
the home.
Under these circumstances, it is possible for a caregiver who is single, separated or divorced to be able to claim
both the Caregiver Amount tax credit AND claim the parent or grandparent as an eligible dependant.
Remember: Employees must file taxes and pay any amount owing to CRA by April 30, 2010. Self-employed
individuals can hold-off filing until June 15, 2010 but must also pay any amount owing to CRA by April 30, 2010.
