NEWBURYPORT — It is
not unusual for fights to erupt
between real estate developers and
endangered snails and turtles and
birds.
But the battle over 38 new homes
on what has been a near-pristine
golf course is shaping up to be one
between the rights of a property
owner and the future water supply
for this city’s human residents.
On a vote of six to two, the city
Planning Board earlier this month
approved a proposal by a New
Hampshire developer to create
home sites on 13 acres of what is
now the nine-hole Evergreen Golf
GROVELAND – Ellen Alden,
helping her daughter with a school
project several years ago, went
looking in her attic at her Andover
home for a childhood photo of
herself.
What the one-time fourth
grade teacher and mother of three
children found there opened a new
opportunity for her and gave her a
rare insight into the challenges that
many immigrants face in coming to
the U.S.
In the attic, she found 12 cardboard
boxes her parents had stored there.
In one was a small wooden box that
contained several tintype photos
and well-preserved letters between
her great grandfather, Florence
Burke, and her great grandmother,
Ellen Burke.
There were 19 letters written in
pencil, mostly from Florence to
Ellen, only three from Ellen to her
husband.
Alden has printed copies of
the letters in a historical novel,
Faithfully Yours, that is based on
the Burkes’ story.
What Alden came to appreciate
in reading their letters was “the
great sacrifices first generations
of immigrants make for their
families,” she told an audience last
week at the Langley-Adams Public
Library.
The couple were Irish immigrants,
who left County Cork during the
devastating potato famine of 1848.
Ellen was the first to make the
hard journey from Ireland to West
Springfield. Her future husband
followed shortly after.
In Massachusetts, Florence, a
starving Irish tenant farmer, became
an American tenant farmer with a
dream of owning his own land and
Those homes would be close to
the city’s water well No. 2, which
provides about 20 percent of the
drinking supply for this city and
other communities. The 24-inch
well, installed in 1958, pumps
water from a shallow 56 feet below
ground. The well is so clean its water
can be pumped into the distribution
system without treatment other
than adding fluoride and adjusting
the acidity levels.
More importantly it may be the
last site in this city, which is rapidly
being built out, where a new well
Faithfully Yours – an Irish Immigrant Story
Continued from page 1
becoming a U.S. citizen.
But that dream was frustrated.
No bank would lend an immigrant
money. So he worked others land,
hoping to save enough one day to
buy his own acreage.
Then the American Civil War
came. As it dragged on for four years
in 1864, the war presented Florence
and Ellen with an opportunity, but
one that was very risky.
When a landowner and town
leader, Julian Day, was notified that
he was to be drafted into President
Abraham Lincoln’s army, he offered
Florence the chance to take his
place. In return, Day gave Florence
$300 and a small portion of his land
that had a house on it. He promised
to build a road to the property.
By serving in the army and
becoming a landowner, Florence
would gain respect and earn his
citizenship.
So at 35, he enlisted, taking the
wealthy landowner’s place and
agreeing to fight a war for a country
where he was not a citizen.
According to his letters, Alden
said, her great grandfather left for
the war confident that his service
would end soon and he would
return to his family and the land.
What he did not know was that
Lincoln had named General U.S.
Grant to head the army and mount
an offensive to end the war.
Burke’s letters home soon asked
what he had gotten himself into.
His last letters showed his growing
desperation.
Ellen and the children stayed to
work the land that turned out to
be barren. Day never built her the
promised road. As a result, her life,
alone raising three children, was
hard.
His life, at first, was routine:
training, cleaning, marching. Then
the Union Army offensive started.
Being an Irish immigrant, he was
pushed to the front lines.
On June 16, 1864, Florence
wrote to his wife. “Last night, we
crossed the James River on a large,
rickety pontoon boat. It seems we’re
marching south, toward Petersburg.
Grant aims to cut off supplies and
starve the Rebs into submission, or
force them to fight in the open. He
still commands us to press forward
trusting that our superior resources
will besiege Lee.”
He closed his last letter, “Dearest
Ellen, all I want you to do is
keep good courage and mind the
children and keep them in school.
That is the wish of an absent father
to his family. My love to you and
the boys, goodnight.”
As he did in every letter, his
salutation was “Yours Faithfully.”
Alden used that phrase as the title
to her historical novel.
In the days after he mailed that
letter, Florence was killed, his body
found in a trench in a field, one
of the 550,052 who died in the
war. The army returned his body
to Springfield at a cost to Ellen of
$100.
“Florence Burke’s gamble did
pay off,” Alden wrote in her novel.
His descendents “stayed in school,”
attending Brown University and
Boston University law school.
Because of the Burkes’ great
sacrifices, future generations of the
family did well in America, Alden
said. One became a judge; another
a dentist and professor, another
worked for the U.S. government
in Washington and her own father
was the head of a school.
They were all “educated,
successful and considered true
Americans,” she wrote.
Alden and her family traveled to
County Cork for her to research
the Irish background of the Burkes’
life. There she met John O’Sullivan,
a local historian, who helped her in
her research of Cork County history
and wrote a forward to her novel.
She also thanked the New
England Irish Cultural Center and
Ancestry.com for their resources in
tracking the Burkes’ life story.
New Homes Versus Future Water Supply
Continued from page 1
supply.
The controversy erupted when
Ethel Vitale, the longtime golf
course owner, died at age 90.
Her heirs offered the property
to developer James Goodwin of
Newton, N.H., who has been
described by his attorney and
former mayor Lisa Mead as “very
responsible.”
The proposal would leave 22 acres
of open space for walking trails, and
if built, the nearest home would be
700 feet from the well, almost twice
the state required setback.
But that has not reassured city
officials, concerned about the future
water supply.
“When I’m told that this is the
last available site for a new well in
the city, I have to look at the bigger
picture,” planning director Andrew
Port said in his office last week.
Once houses are built on this site,
the state will not approve it for a
future well, he said.
In a January memo to the
Planning Board, Port wrote:
“Development of the Evergreen site
now could permanently prohibit a
future City well if not coordinated
and addressed adequately at this
time.”
The project is opposed by Mayor
Donna Holaday and every city
council member, who may have to
face the expensive option of buying
all or at least 13 of the home sites
to protect the city’s future water
supply.
“Hopefully there is still time to
protect this vital resource,” wrote
city councilor Robert Cronin last
week to his constituents.
If the city needs to replace well
No. 2, former water treatment
plant supervisor Paul Colby “felt
confident that the City would
be able to replace the existing #2
well entirely on City’s property
– without concern for state setback
requirements,” Port wrote in his
memo.
But Colby and his team argue
that the city should acquire all or
part of the golf course as a site for a
future well, he wrote.
The Planning Board, which has
the authority to grant a special
permit for the project, voted before
the city’s water commission and
board of health gave their final
opinions on its impact on the city’s
water supply. The Conservation
Commission has not granted its
approval.
The planning board, facing a
deadline under state law, could
have been sued by the developer
if it had refused or postponed the
vote to grant a special permit.
In approving the project the
Planning Board wrote: “The
proposed development will not
overload public water, drainage or
sewer systems, proved that certain
It imposed 13 pages of rules on
the development and the future
homeowners. They involve the use
of fertilizers and pesticides in lawn
maintenance and sodium for snow
and ice in winter.
Cronin complained that there
is no mechanism to determine if
these rules will be followed. “The
conditions place many monetary
conditions on the homeowner’s
association, trash, plowing, lighting
and street trees, but this type
of condition does nothing that
definitively protects our water,” he
wrote.
Sewer lines, needed for the homes,
will be in or near the underground
water that flows to the water
supply, he said. “This is troubling
to me. We are wagering the city
will succeed at the impossible task
of oversight of the covenants of this
construction but in perpetuity.”
AERIAL ACROBATS:
WOODCOCKS AND MORE!
The American woodcock, with its
remarkable physical adaptations and
its spectacular courtship behavior,
is always a treat to observe. With
the first hints of spring, these small
birds appear on their breeding fields.
The resulting courtship display is not
to be missed! After a series of nasal
peent calls, the male springs into
to the ground like a falling leaf, often
landing at almost the exact point of
takeoff. During this program, we
expect to observe this impressive
display and discuss the many unique
adaptations of this unlikely shorebird.
We will also search for other earlyspring
migrants that are active in the
evening. Thu, Mar 16, 2017 6:30
ROWLEY - Works of artist Patty deGrandpre on display at Rowley Public Library - Patty deGrandpre became
an artist by drawing houses without walls; it came naturally to her to focus on what was inside. Her unbound
visions from childhood have since grown into mature works of abstract art. Patty’s unique compositions and
color combinations aim to make the viewers look closer and look again, as she hopes they might discover a little
more each time. She often creates her artworks in pairs and families using a combination of paint, pastel, and
ink with unconventional mediums such as carbon paper, blue print paper, vellum, drafting film, ammonia, and
her typewriter. Her work will be on display through March at the Rowley Public Library, 141 Main Street in
Health & Wellness
By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD
I understand that periodontal
disease is a major cause of tooth
loss in adults, but is there anything
I can do about it?
Gum disease—periodontal
disease—often progresses slowly,
without pain, over a long period
of time. This is one reason why it
is common among older adults.
The longer the disease goes
undetected and uncontrolled, the
more damage it causes to gums and
other supporting tissues. Although
periodontal disease is caused by
bacteria, other factors can increase
the risk or severity of the condition.
These include food left between the
teeth, smoking, smokeless (spit)
tobacco use, badly aligned teeth, illfitting
bridges or partial dentures,
poor diets and some systemic
diseases such as diabetes.
Although periodontal disease is
common, it can be controlled or
arrested. In its early stages, it can
be reversed. Treatment of advanced
cases may require surgery. Look for
these warning signs and see your
dentist if you notice any of them:
bleeding gums when you brush; red,
tender or swollen gums; gums that
Surgeons who are rude or
disrespectful can result in
patients having postoperative
complications, a recent study
in the JAMA Surgery journal
concluded.
The two-year study was a big
one, involving 32,125 patients.
Researchers examined the
records of all those patients,
looking for patterns of medical
complications within 30 days of
surgery. They correlated Patient
Advocacy Reporting data from
patients and family members
who had complained about
rude behavior with the data
from patients who experienced
Brighter Smiles...
Dental Changes with Age – Part 2
have pulled away from the teeth;
pus between your teeth and gums
when the gums are pressed; loose
teeth or teeth that are moving apart;
any change in your bite; any change
in the fit of your partial dentures;
constant bad breath or bad taste.
My dentures don’t feel as
comfortable as they once did.
Before I see the dentist, should I
try some different products myself
to try to improve them?
Your dentures were made to
fit precisely. If they are cared for
properly, they do not change
shape. They can become loose due
to natural changes in the gums
and bone supporting them. As the
jawbone begins to shrink, so do the
gums. In addition, the teeth wear
over time and become less effective
during chewing. Most dentures
should be replaced every 5-8 years.
When your dentures do not fit
properly, see your dentist as soon
as possible so adjustments can be
made. Professional relining of the
denture may extend its lifespan.
Do not try to change the fit of your
dentures yourself. This can damage
them and make them unrepairable.
If I have full dentures, do I really
need to see the dentist as often as
before?
Even if you no longer have
your natural teeth, you should
see your dentist once a year for an
oral examination. The dentist will
examine your mouth to check for
any problem with the gum ridges,
the tongue and the joints of the jaw,
Senior Scene
Rude Surgeon Should Raise Red Flags
surgical complication, medical
complications or readmission.
The end result: Nearly 14
percent of those patients had
complications such as surgicalsite
infections, pulmonary or
renal conditions, stroke, urinary
tract infections and more. Each
complaint in the preceding
two years increased the chances
of a patient experiencing
complications.
The problem extends to more
than the doctor being brusque
or rude to a patient. If a doctor
acts that way toward a nurse,
anesthesiologist or any member
of the medical staff, that person
might be hesitant to speak up if
something seems suspect during
the surgery.
Of course, malpractice is a big
worry for doctors and hospitals.
as well as screen for oral cancer. For a
variety of reasons, many older adults
are more susceptible to oral diseases,
including oral cancer. About 95
percent of all cancers are found in
people over age 40. However, many
of these cancers are treatable if
detected early. Oral tissues are also
checked for signs of other diseases
that can first manifest themselves in
the mouth.
I am currently taking medication
that my physician prescribed for
me. Can this affect my dental
treatment?
When your dentist asks for your
medical history, be sure to provide
complete, up-to-date information
on your health. Inform your dentist
if you have experienced recent
hospitalization or surgery, or if
you have recently been ill. Also tell
the dentist the names, doses and
frequency of any medications you
are taking, whether prescription
or over-the-counter products, and
the name of your physician. This
information will help the dentist
to select the most safe and effective
method of treatment for you.
Part of this study was to point
out to high-risk doctors just how
their interpersonal behaviors,
with patients as well as medical
staff, can cause negative physical
outcomes that can lead to those
lawsuits.
So, what can you do as a
patient? It’s tempting to read
comments that patients leave in
doctor-rating websites. Know,
however, that the worst doctors
can get glowing online reports,
real or not. Your best bet is to
schedule a consultation with your
potential surgeon. Ask a lot of
questions. A good doctor should
be glad to have an informed
patient and will happily tell you
what you want to know without
belittling you or being rude.
