DEHN - Isolating Spark Gaps
Process plants such as refineries, oil, gas and product pipelines belong to the largest and most sophisticated building
structures. They form the lifelines for regions and entire countries. Reliability, quality and efficiency are important
factors for the oil and gas industry to establish themselves on the market. Therefore safe operation of all electrical
and electronic installations and systems is the most important aspect.
Due to the large size, location and construction as well as the use of modern measuring and control technology, the
reliability of these installations is threatened by surges due to lightning or switching operations. The repair costs for
replacing damaged systems are considerably higher than the costs of installing lightning protection systems and
surge protective devices, not to mention the revenue lost due to operational downtime.
DEHN also offers practical protection against lightning and surges for the cathodic corrosion protection system.
Decades of .. experience in lightning and surge protection for petrochemical systems as well as intensive research by
DEHN + SOHNE have led to the development of comprehensive protection solutions. This allows a substantial
reduction of lightning damage e.g. at isolating pipe flanges, CP installations and control rooms. More importantly,
consequential production failures and operational downtime due to lightning are reduced to a minimum.
..
DEHN + SOHNE offers ATEX and IEC/Ex approved isolating spark gap products for use in EX Zones 1, 2, 21 and 22.
EXFS 100 / EXFS 100 KU LIGHTNING EQUIPOTENTIAL BONDING
For explosion-hazard areas ISOLATING SPARK GAPS (Zones 1, 2, 21, 22)
ATEX-certified isolating spark gap for lightning
equipotential bonding according to IEC 62305 with
low sparkover voltage.
EXFS 100: Isolating spark gap for use in explosion-hazard areas with plastic coating and M10 connecting nut.
EXFS 100 KU: Isolating spark gap for use in explosion-hazard areas with 2m connection cable for above / underground installation.
The Ex isolating spark gaps of the EXFS 100 / EXFS 100 KU product family are used
when conductive installation components situated in explosion-hazard areas
cannot be connected directly with each other. The spark gaps with low
sparkover voltage are especially efficient for isolated installation components
with little insulation resistance. No special regulations have to be observed for
safe application in zone 1 with gases or zone 21 with dusts. With a maximum
lightning impulse current of 100 kA (10/350 us), EXFS 100 and EXFS 100 KU meet
class H according to EN 50164-3 “Lightning Protection Components (LPC) - Part 3:
Requirements for isolating spark gaps”. The ATEX-certified spark gaps EXFS 100
and EXFS 100 KU provide approved safety according to harmonised European
standards. For connecting EXFS 100 spark gaps, prewired connecting cables with
different lengths are available as accessories. Flat and angled connection
brackets make it easier to connect the spark gaps to pipe flanges. EXFS 100 KU
types are enclosed by a damp-proof plastic coating and are ideally suited for
underground installation at insulation couplings.
Corrosion-resistant zinc diecasting enclosure with plastic cover and
flexible conductor connection.
For bridging insulating pieces, insulation flanges etc. in cathodically
corrosion protected pipe sections.
Heavy-duty device.
Ex isolating spark gaps of the EXFS L / EXFS KU product family are used when the direct interconnection of electrically conductive
installation components in Ex areas is not acceptable. As, for example, in the case of cathodically corrosion protected pipeline sections.
ATEX-certified EXFS L and EXFS KU spark gaps provide approved and tested safety in accordance with harmonised European standards.
The arc-resistant tungsten-copper electrodes ensure a long service life of the Ex spark gaps. The approved type EXFS L with flexible
conductor connection quickly adapts to any application environment. The prewired spark gaps provide connecting cables with different
lengths with cable lugs, screws and M10 nut. The flat or angled connection brackets allow for easy connection of the spark gap to
pipeline flanges. The EXFS KU type is enclosed in a damp-proof PVC enclosure and is ideal for underground installation at insulating
couplings.
Each cable going out of the CP rectifier (measuring and anode electrical circuit) is led via a lightning current and surge
arrester especially adjusted to CP installations. Thus, the partial lightning currents coming from the pipeline as well as
surges caused by switching operations can be controlled safely. It is recommended to install the lightning current and
surge arresters into a separate steel enclosure in order to prevent any threats to the CP installation due to overloads
e.g. via overhead lines.
