By Kelly Tries
February 11. The theme is Catholic Schools:
iLearn, iBelieve, iPray.
How we teach, what we teach and the systems
for our schools to be effective in the face of the fast
paced technological changes and social media of
our time. What has not changed are the spiritual
and principles based upon truth are timeless. Please
come and celebrate with our students, families and
staffs as they celebrate this February!

THE
BISHOP’S
MESSAGE
Most Reverend David J. Monroe
Bishop of Kamloops
IN MEMORIAM: Father Patrick Skaria, O.S.A. (1941-2011)
Father Patrick Skaria, O.S.A.
died on December 30, 2011 at
Marylake Monastery, King City,
Ontario.
He was born in Kerela, India
on February 13, 1941. He joined
the Order of Saint Augustine in
India and later went to the Philippines
for his Novitiate in Manila
in 1971. He professed his vows on
April 30, 1972 and was ordained
to the priesthood on June 28, 1975.
Father came to Canada in the
mid-1980s and helped at Sacred
Heart Parish in Delta, BC. He then
worked in several dioceses in
British Columbia, including the
Diocese of Kamloops where he
served at Enderby, Pemberton and
Mount Currie until he went to the
Diocese of Nelson in 2005.
When Father retired in 2010 he
stayed at the rectory of Christ the
Servant parish in Cranbrook, BC.
In November 2011, while
dealing with his ill health, he went
to Marylake Shrine where he died
on Dec. 30. The funeral Mass was
cellebrated on January 3, 2012 at
Marylake Shrine. §
On December 27, 2011 Pope
Benedict XVI sent a message
to Cardinal Antonio Maria
Rouco Varela, the archbishop
of Madrid, Spain. In the message
the Holy Father said:
“It is in the family that we learn
to live together, that faith is
transmitted, values are strengthened
and freedom is channeled
to ensure that one day children
will be fully aware of their own
vocation and dignity, and that of
others. The warmth of the home
and domestic example can teach
much more than words can say.”
Our secondary patron, the Curé
of Ars, Saint John Vianney,
visited the families of his parish
and wrote and preached about
the necessity of the example of
the mother and father for the
proper formation of the children.
The Curé told the people that the
home is where children should
hear about God and His Saints,
where they learn the meaning of
the birth of Jesus, the meaning
of the life, teachings and sufferings
of Jesus, and the meaning
of His resurrection and our hope
to be with Him in heaven.
“If we wish to see any improvement
in the state community or
the family, the family must, in
common with the Church, educate
the children in Christianity,”
Saint John Vianney tells us.
When the Curé came to Ars there
was no school for the children,
so he sent two women to Lyons
to be trained as teachers and
when they returned he began the
first school in Ars to assist the
parents in teaching the children
the Catholic faith.
This issue of The Diocesan
News is dedicated especially to
the Catholic education of our
children in the Diocese of Kam-
loops and, now that we have a
distance-learning school [page
19], our teachers can reach out
to those families where children
cannot even consider attending
one of our five Catholic schools.
Pope Benedict, recognizing the
importance of the family and
the importance of the Catholic
faith, has established that beginning
October 11th this year the
Church will have the ‘Year of
Faith’. The Pope wants families
and all members of the Church
to have the “aspiration to profess
the faith in fullness and with
renewed conviction, with confidence
and hope” and that
believers’ “witness of life may
grow in credibility”.
Yours in Christ,
Bl. Kateri Tekakwitha’s canonization could be as early as this spring
By Michael Swan,
The Catholic Register
(CCN) – When Canada’s first
aboriginal saint is canonized, it
will be an answered prayer for
native people across Canada and
beyond.
“There’s a natural sense of
pride and joy” among native
people, said Whitehorse Bishop
Gary Gordon.
On hearing the news that
Pope Benedict XVI had cleared
the way for Blessed Kateri
Tekakwitha to be canonized,
perhaps as early as Spring 2012,
Bishop Gordon planned to phone
his old friend Steve Point, the
lieutenant-governor of British
Columbia. Point is a former
elected chief of the Skowkale First
Nation.
“I’m gonna say to him,” the
Bishop said, ‘Steve, we’ve got to
go to Rome!’”
Pope Benedict XVI signed
the decree Dec. 19 recognizing
the miracle in Blessed Kateri
Tekakwitha’s cause for sainthood
and clearing the way for her
canonization.
Bl. Kateri Tekakwitha, “the
Lily of the Mohawks,” is the
young Indian maiden who, despite
objections from some in her
own clan, came to know and love
Christ.
She was born in 1656 in a
village on the Mohawk River
called Ossernenon, now Auriesville,
New York. Her father was a
Mohawk chief and her mother a
Christian Algonquin raised among
the French.
CANADIAN REACTION
“Awesome!” was the word from
Grace Esquega, director of the
Kitchitwa Kateri, a Church for
aboriginal Catholics in Thunder
Bay, Ont. Esquega repeated the
word several times when Fr. Larry
Croker called to give her the news.
“There have been prayer
circles. People have been in touch
SAINTLY SAYINGS
with the devotion for years. There
will just be great joy over it, finally
after all this time,” said Croker.
In northwestern Ontario,
native rendezvous weekends and
music ministries have been
organized around devotion to
Blessed Kateri since the 1970s.
At the Martyrs’ Shrine in
Midland, ON where a couple of
statues of Blessed Kateri are very
popular, manager John Zurakowski
predicts the annual First
Nations’ pilgrimage will attract
new participants.
“The First Nations pilgrimage
will grow because now it’s one of
their own elevated to sainthood,”
Zurakowski said.
In missions across Canada the
beatification will demonstrate that
the Church is truly with the people,
said Catholic Missions In Canada
president Fr. Philip Kennedy. “In
the minds of the First Nations
people she’s already a saint. She’s
already someone to whom they
can appeal for sympathy with their
troubles, for help with discriminations.
She’s gone through what
Jerome Emiliani
c. 1481-1537
February 8
Jerome enlisted in the Venetian army in 1511. He was captured
and chained in a dungeon, but promised himself to God if released.
That he later was able to walk out of his prison was considered
miraculous.
He was ordained in 1518. When the plague struck, he cared
for the sick and opened an orphanage. In 1532, he and two fellow
priests formed the Clerks Regular Somaschi, now known as the
Somascan Fathers. Jerome was declared the patron saint of
orphaned and abandoned children in 1928.
(Fill the spaces to see the words)
they are going through.” Bl. Kateri
is significant not only for aboriginal
Catholics but also for native
Lutherans and Anglicans, he said.
Her status as a role model in the
spiritual life also crosses borders.
“When I went to a mission
conference in Guatemala they had
a huge picture of her, like a threestorey
high picture,” Kennedy
said.
Documentation for her sainthood
cause was sent to the Vatican
in 1932. She was declared venerable
in 1942, the first step to
sainthood that recognizes the
candidate’s heroic virtues. Two
miracles that occur after death are
generally needed for a sainthood
cause to move forward. After a
first miracle is confirmed by the
Church, the candidate is beatified.
Kateri was beatified by Pope John
Paul II in 1980, giving her the title
“Blessed”. Her feast day is April
17 in Canada & July 14 in the U.S.
Documentation for the final
miracle needed for her canonization
was sent to the Vatican in July
2009. It involved the recovery of
a young boy in Seattle whose face
had been disfigured by flesheating
bacteria and who almost
died from the disease; he recovered
completely and the Vatican
confirmed the work of a tribunal
that determined there was no
medical explanation for it.
Blessed Kateri
has another
namesake
Blessed Francisco
and Jacinta Marto
20th Century
February 20
“The Indian people in the
United States and Canada have
longed for the canonization of
Blessed Kateri from the moment
of her beatification,” Archbishop
Charles Chaput of Philadelphia
told Catholic News Service at
the Vatican in December. §
BAPTISM – DEC. 30, 2011. Kateri Tekakwitha Muriella, daughter
of Cathedral parishioners Frank and Odette Caputo, was
baptized at St. Joseph’s by Rev. Andrew L’Heureux, rector of
Sacred Heart Cathedral. Fr. Andrew and Frank met and became
friends at Camp Kateri (Kamloops Diocese) in 1994.
Two of the three Fatima visionaries, this sister and brother were
beatified in 2000. With their cousin, Lucia dos Santos, they had
monthly visions of Mary at Fatima, Portugal, from May to October
1917. Mary asked the shepherd children to promote devotion to
her Immaculate Heart and pray the rosary daily. Both Martos
children died of influenza, Francisco at age 10 in 1919, and Jacinta
at age 9 in 1920. Their cousin, who became a Carmelite nun, died
in 2005 at age 97. Fatima is among the world’s great Marian shrines
and pilgrimage sites.
December 4 – Sunday
I celebrated the Mass at Blessed
mountain sheep have come from the hills
to trim what is left of the lawn – and at
Saint Joseph’s Church on the Kamloops
very good care of the church and the
surroundings with new trees and benches
facing the church so that summer visitors
WYD Rio 2013
The Canadian Bishops have established an age
requirement for the next World Youth Day and we will
adhere to that age requirement without exception. The
minimum age requirement will be 17 years. This means
that the young person must be 17 at the time of World
Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro (July 23-28, 2013). Due to
the complexities of Brazil no one under the age of 17
should apply for World Youth Day 2013. Further to this
Diocesan
president-elect
presents
workshop
By Kasia Ryan, Vernon
Catherine L’Heureux of St. James,
Vernon presented her first leadership
workshop on Oct. 22 at Our Lady of the
Valley Church, Coldstream.
Sponsored by the O.L.O.V. council, this
CWL workshop was open to the ladies of
all parishes in the area: Coldstream, Vernon,
Lumby, Armstrong, Enderby, Salmon Arm
and Blind Bay.
It has been many years since I attended
a workshop of any kind. With a busy life
style and three children I chose to take the
time out and attend this workshop. I was
very impressed with Catherine’s credentials.
As president-elect for the Diocesan CWL
Council, she is in charge of leadership
training at the diocesan level. She has
completed her gold level in Toastmasters
and is currently the leader of the Catholic
Girls League based at St. James, Vernon.
To me, she shows true leadership and a
devout love of our faith.
The workshop was extremely informative
and interactive. I learnt so much and
definitely feel more confident now that
I have the tools and skills to put into action.
It was warm and comforting to share this
day with other CWL members, to socialize
with these wonderful women who were so
friendly and kind. I encourage all CWL
members in our Diocese to take a workshop
like this. I always thought I was and
would be a follower, but after attending this
workshop, I am now, and can be with
courage, a leader. Thank you Catherine
L’Heureux for sharing your well prepared
presentation. §
‘ASANTENI SANA’ – A message from Brother Anthony Canterucci, CPPS
On Feb. 25, 2012 CPPS Mission
Projects will celebrate its tenth annual
‘Windmills, Wells and Water’ fundraising
dinner at Thompson Rivers University.
I would like to thank the people of the
Diocese of Kamloops for opening their
hearts to embrace me, my fellow missionaries
and the mission work we do for the
people of Tanzania. You should be proud of
the many projects you have supported and
the remarkable difference these projects
have made to the people living in our
mission territory. The water supplied by our
windmills and water systems; the medical
dispensary for the people of Iymbu; the tons
of food supplies; and the education provided
at St. Gaspar Elementary School have
impacted the lives of thousands of people.
In addition to these projects, some
volunteers have been busy sewing clothing
and knitting toques to send to the children
in our mission territory. Anne Smith, Anne
Heistad and Betty Holland have sewn more
than 100 sundresses over the past two years.
and chaperones from your Diocese every
time they travel to the mission field and
given to the children living in the many
orphanages supported by our mission. Two
lay missionaries from your Diocese, Steve
Faliszewski and Maddison Irwin, have been
working in the mission field for almost a
year now. Their enthusiasm and energy have
brought new life to the mission projects. We
are grateful to have them working with us.
Both of these young people were students
on summer trips prior to making this long
term commitment. Had they not had the
opportunity to come to Tanzania for a
summer, they would likely not be working
here with us today. Thank you for making
the summer projects possible for young
people like Maddison and Steve. On behalf
of the people of Tanzania and the Missionaries
of the Precious Blood, thank you –
YOUNG ADULT RETREAT: ‘Wandering Warriors and Damsels in Distress’
By Lindsay Richey, St. Joseph’s Parish,
Armstrong
In the days leading up to Christmas the
Diocese of Kamloops gathered its youth to
a familiar place. Cache Creek is home of
the Immaculate Heart of Mary Shrine and
Centre, which hosted a group of about 20
young Catholic men and women for a retreat
led by Fr. Andrew L’Heureux of Sacred
Heart Cathedral in Kamloops, partnered by
Diocesan Youth & Young Adult Coordinator
Adele Huculak.
Entitled ‘Wandering Warriors and
Damsels in Distress,’ the retreat addressed
our unique and individual roles as men and
women, how and where we find our identity
as men and women as well as where to draw
the line that differentiates men from women.
Through discussion, we observed that
society is attempting to blur the line that
makes men and women different. It is of
vital importance to recognize the differences
that do exist between men and women and
to look at the ways in which these differences
complement one another. The title of
the retreat was very appropriate for the topic
we were discussing.
Without the ability to recognize who we
are as men and women and without seeking
for this identity through God we will remain
damsels in distress and wandering warriors.
I found this retreat to be a highly enriching
experience. I was given the opportunity
to acknowledge the individual dignity
I possess as a woman and to look at the
merits and grace given to both men and
Lay Enrichment Weekend: ‘The Word Made Flesh’
By Margaret Onneken
People from all over the Diocese came
to Cache Creek – teenagers to grandparent
age – to listen to presenter Fr. Derrick
Cameron the weekend of Dec. 2-4 and
discuss the topic.
It is still like God sending out His
message, crying out in the wilderness of our
lives and hearts – “open up, I wish to enter,
with my message of Hope, Love and Light,”
shining in the dark of our times and days.
It was perfect timing – The Advent of
Our Lord – to step away from our everyday,
our surroundings and busy schedules to
reflect upon “the Word became Flesh”.
By the time you read this, Christmas
has past and I hope we have all opened
the doors of our hearts to welcome the
precious Lord coming to us in the Eucharist
with all His love for us. He wishes to fill
our lives with His presence through the
“Holy Eucharist and manifests Himself
through us, as a Light, with Love and Hope
for all to see. May His presence shine
through you, throughout this year 2012 as
a Gift to you; and for all to see.
I wish with these words to thank – in
the name of all attending this retreat – the
Diocese and Father Derrick for planting the
hunger for the Lord anew. May the Lord of
Love, Hope and Light bless you throughout
the year. §
RISE UP 2011
Conference
By Sr. Analisa Baracena, SFIC
The Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO)
Rise Up 2011 National Conference in
Vancouver was held at the Hyatt Regency
from Dec. 28, 2011 to Jan. 1, 2012 with the
theme, John Paul II: Inspired by his Legacy.
More than 500 courageous young adult
participants from across Canada came to
experience this wonderful, inspiring and
enriching five-day event. As many as 16 of
us were from Kamloops Diocese. The
opening session about ‘John Paul the Great’
given by Fr. Raymond De Sousa served as
a great invitation and encouragement for all
of us to open wide the door of our heart to
Christ without any worries, hesitations or
fears. Our readiness to open our hearts to a
deeper relationship with Christ led us into
the following day when the speakers talked
about accepting Jesus in our lives and how
having an authentic relationship with Him
will surely bring us joy, peace and freedom.
The second day culminated in Adoration,
Praise & Worship and the Sacrament of
Reconciliation with 45 priests available to
hear confessions. Presentations on the third
day focused more on the Mission. We were
reminded that our commitment to evangelization
can be traced to the early Church.
The Church is committed to evangelization
as Pope Paul VI stated in his exhortation on
Evangelization in the Modern World
(Evangelii Nuntiandi, EN): “The church
exists in order to evangelize.” We were
encouraged to put our energies into
evangelizing – with lots of courage,
enthusiasm and boldness – most especially
those who do not know and have not yet
heard about Christ. Archbishop Michael
Miller presented the Decree on the
Missionary Activity of the Church (Mission
Ad Gentes, AG). He briefly discussed the
ST. JAMES, VERNON. The topic is Chastity as international speaker Jason
Evert draws a crowd of 225 on December 11.
CLOSING SESSION – Rise Up is an annual conference for young adults (18-35) hosted
by Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO), a Canadian university student movement.
tp@teniscipiva.com
Diocesan News, Roman Catholic Diocese of Kamloops – February, 2012
importance of the why, where, who and how
to evangelize. He clearly explained the
reasons we need to evangelize; this is
because Jesus commissioned us to proclaim
the Good News to the entire world. As we
personally experience the love of God, we
also are wanted to share it willingly with
others. The Church is missionary by nature
and we are all called to be missionaries. By
virtue of our baptism we must be ready to
respond to this mission. The Holy Spirit is
the Source of all these works and activities.
We evangelize as we spread the faith with
joy and respect. We proclaim the gospel in
promoting human life and in our apostolate
of presence. We do not impose, we can only
propose.
On the fourth day, two workshops were
available: Living our Apostolate; and
Personal Development. In the afternoon we
had the New Year anticipated Mass at Holy
Rosary Cathedral with Archbishop Miller,
followed by the New Year’s Eve banquet
and dance. The last day’s session was about
our personal legacy. The big challenge for
all of us was how to leave the place
encouraged, equipped, empowered in
introducing Christ to others and in bringing
Him with us, as Blessed Pope John Paul II
inspired us by his legacy. §
SPIRITUAL CLASSICS
A series of articles by Rev. Dale Normandeau,
Pastor of St. James Parish in Vernon
While various Catholic schools of
spirituality reflect a good deal of diversity
throughout our Church’s history, they also
hold a great deal in common. All authentic
Catholic forms of spirituality, despite their
differences, are rooted in a common deposit
of faith, as expressed in our Creeds. We all
worship One God in three Persons and
belong to one Church established by Christ.
These are some of the non-negotiable,
dogmatic tenets that we hold in common
even though they are lived out in a variety
of spiritual and liturgical configurations.
Another non-negotiable aspect of
Catholic spirituality is devotion to the
Blessed Virgin Mary, so says St. Louis de
Montfort. While the Catholic faith has a very
rich history of devotion to Mary and the
saints, St. Louis strongly reminds the reader
in his spiritual classic, True Devotion to
Mary, that devotion to Mary is not just
one devotional option among many.
Devotion to Mary is at the heart of Catholic
life and, for those seriously wanting to grow
in holiness, a necessary constituent of
Catholic spirituality.
St. Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort
was born in northwest France in 1673.
Ordained in 1700, he felt a call to preach on
Mary and the rosary. Although he lived only
another sixteen years after his ordination,
St. Louis de Montfort preached more than
200 missions throughout the region of
Brittany and established religious orders,
confraternities and schools while still
finding time to write books and hymns. He
died, probably of exhaustion, at the age of
forty-three.
He was canonized in 1947 and is
considered one of the pioneers in Mariology,
the theological study of Mary.
True Devotion to Mary is considered
to be the best book ever written on Marian
devotion and has been praised by every Pope
in modern times. St. Louis’ form of Marian
devotion has proved to be very popular
and was a major influence in the spiritual
lives of such towering spiritual figures as
Blessed Pope John Paul II, Blessed Mother
Teresa, St. Maximilian Kolbe and Frank
Duff, founder of the Legion of Mary.
FALSE DEVOTION
Before describing what manifests true
devotion to Mary, St. Louis de Montfort
presents seven examples of what constitutes
false Marian devotion. In rapid order, he
St. Louis de Montfort’s ‘True Devotion to Mary’
condemns those devotees who arrogantly
disdain the devotion of the simple and
humble; those who believe Mary and Jesus
are in jealous competition with each other;
people who exercise external devotions but
do not mature in their conversion or grow
in virtue; the presumptive who believe
Mary will “bail them out” in the end; fickle
people who engage in multiple devotions
superficially; those who are devoted to Mary
but are not following the teachings of the
Church; and finally, anyone who is devoted
to Mary only as a means to get something
from her. These forms of devotion are false
because they do not lead to deeper conversion
via deeper union with Jesus. In fact,
St. Louis implies that these false devotions
may come from an evil source, as they may
alienate us from Jesus, rather than draw us
closer to him.
AUTHENTIC DEVOTION
Having described false devotion, St.
Louis then identifies those five conditions
that characterize authentic devotion to Mary.
He first reminds the reader that Jesus
Christ is the ultimate goal of devotion to
Mary. All true Marian devotion is radically
Christocentric and all true devotees of
Mary should be growing in a deeper love
and devotion to Jesus Christ. Failure to do
this would render the devotion as
false and delusional. This first
quality of authentic devotion is so
fundamental, in fact, that it is used
as a litmus test to discern the
validity of private apparitions of
Mary, of which there is an overabundance
today.
Secondly, the devotee needs to
acknowledge that he or she belongs
to Jesus and Mary as their slave.
This idea is not to be confused with
the contemptible practice of historical
slavery. It actually means that
he or she must totally give of themselves
to Jesus and Mary without
reservation, much like a married
couple who give themselves totally
(by self-donation) to each other.
We give to Mary everything – our
virtues, values, sins and vices – and
she takes it to Jesus to be purified.
Thirdly, we must acknowledge
our need for Mary in order
to die to ourselves. Renunciation
and mortification (which means
dying to self) is a necessary prerequisite to
all authentic Catholic spirituality. We must
constantly challenge and overcome selfishness
because of concupiscence and mixed
motives, in order to expunge it from our
mind and will. Mary is the best teacher of
mortification because she is untouched by
original sin and, therefore, free of all
concupiscence and selfishness. St. Louis
reminds the reader to also call on the Holy
Spirit, spouse of Mary, to reveal their
selfishness to themselves and counteract
that selfishness by mortification. Without
mortification, everything we do will be
marked by selfishness and will bear no fruit.
Fourthly, St. Louis de Montfort reminds
the devotee to acknowledge Mary as our
Mediatrix with our Mediator, Jesus Christ.
This aspect of Marian devotion may be the
hardest to appreciate, let alone understand.
This is not to say that we cannot go directly
to Jesus, who is the one mediator between
God and human beings, but that we need
one to approach Jesus, who is divine, on our
behalf. This is done not out of fear, but of
humility. It both acknowledges our sinfulness
and Mary’s potency as a Mediatrix.
She is a creature like us who, unlike us,
received the unique vocation to give birth
to Jesus – God and man – and nursed,
clothed and raised him. For that reason, He
will grant her every request. St. Louis goes
so far as to say “He is always lovingly
vanquished by the prayers of His dearest
Mother, who bore Him and nourished Him”.
Finally, we need Mary to help us
preserve the Graces we have received from
God. Since we are inconstant because of
fickleness and weakness, we often deviate
from our resolve to live a holy life. Moreover,
the evil one knows our weaknesses
and uses this knowledge to lead us into sin,
which is why temptation to sin is often
strongest when we are trying to avoid it.
Mary can help us to remain in God’s Grace
because of her state of sinlessness. The devil
cannot touch her or conquer her. We need
recourse to her as she is our strongest
spiritual ally.
The concluding part of True Devotion
to Mary consists of prayers and reflections
for a 33-day private retreat. St. Louis de
Montfort, realizing that his readers needed
a tangible way to flesh out the insights
found in his book, presented them with a
retreat to help them live out an authentic
devotion to Mary. The first twelve days is
a preliminary period which focuses on
ridding oneself of the spirit of the world,
with the following week then centring on
self-knowledge and sorrow for one’s sins.
The next week then leads the retreatant to
pray for a greater knowledge of Mary,
followed by praying for a greater knowledge
of Jesus the following week. This retreat
concludes with an Act of Consecration to
Jesus Christ, through His Mother Mary.
