Investors…….What’s In it For You?
Several opportunities exist to profi t from the
advent of solar energy, thanks largely to the
Ontario Power Associations (OPA) new Feed
in Tariff program. The program is similar
to those off ered by Germany, Spain and
Denmark where solar energy accounts for a
signifi cant percentage of energy production.
The Feed in Tariff (FIT) is there to encourage
Ontario building owners, investors, solar
power installers and others to help increase
the reliance on renewable energy forms and
decrease our dependence on coal. The OPA
off ers a 20 year commitment to investors
through the FIT program.
Property owners may lease their roofs
through Anderson Commercial Realty and
simply allow the installation of solar panels.
This requires no capital expenditure and
results in steady cash fl ow over a 20 year
contract life with Ontario Power Authority.
This scenario could be attractive to every
property owner, including those whose
buildings are “under-leased” or underperforming
as rental properties. Although they
aren’t sharing in the profi ts of solar energy
production directly, their contribution is
recognized as a positive step in the greening
of Ontario.
Profi t from Ontario FIT Program
There may be some advantages for property
owners to buy their own solar system, thus
benefi ting from the feed in tariff directly. By
selling the power back to the grid and realizing
between 63.5 and 80.2 cents per kwh
produced, they stand to make a considerable
profi t.
A 250kw solar PV system, a typical size for a
commercial building rooftop, can generate
up to 26,00 kw/m. The FIT program contract
price is 71.3 cents/kwh for the 20 year period.
The total investment for a system this size is
approximately $1,500,000 CDN with the 30%
equity equating to $450,000. A before tax
return on investment of 19-24% is feasible.
Yet another opportunity presents itself.
Property owners at some point will be faced
with replacing their roofs, which can be an
enormous expense. Anderson Commercial
is working on programs that can
potentially off set the cost by up
to a third of the value if the owner
chooses a roof lease. Dave Anderson,
President of Anderson Commercial
Realty Inc. explains “if a
building needs a roof replacement
the owner could look at having
the funds paid up front rather than
monthly for the next twenty years,”
Anderson says. “They could take a
onetime cheque and those monthly
payments would be discounted
back to a net present value, for
example, if a landlord was to lease
a roof to solar energy investors for
$10,000 per annum, they could receive
a cheque of roughly $100,000
rather than accept the $833.33
monthly leasing fee over the next
240 months. That money could be
used immediately toward a roof
replacement.”
Anderson’s Senior Vice President
Doug Finlay is one of the specialists
in the industry and he off ers
encouragement to potential investors.
“The dollar amount per kwh is
known, the length of the program
and the “payer” are known (i.e. the
Ontario government through the
Ontario Power Authority),” Finlay
declares. “These can be turned
into steady and solid investment
vehicles for institutional and private
invests alike.”
There’s an Economic Opportunity to
be Had!
and says “it’s great to be able to participate
in the solar business by the use of rooftops.
Mostly, rooftops are considered dead, unusable
space, “he points out also, “Opportu-
nities to make money from rooftops have
been rare until recently. They have pretty
A Salute to
Gary Hapke
If you’re at all an active member of “The Chamber”,
or I might even extend it to, simply a
member of the
Cambridge Business Community, you will have
come across, heard of, or even come to know
Gary Hapke, Community Manager for Sco-
tiabank here in Cambridge. For 8 years now,
Gary has demonstrated what it takes to be not
only a successful banker, but how to achieve
success as an individual. Gary, as many know,
after a successful 33 years with Scotiabank is
retiring (eff ective January 1st). Now many of us
have been around the block a few times and
believe me there aren’t too many people
who have a retirement reception at their
place of business and has the Mayor show
up to thank them for their contribution to
the community. Gary has not only made
a diff erence for business folks as their
banker, he has truly made a diff erence in
people’s lives, across the spectrum. Just
a word of caution for Gary’s replacement
Bruce Campbell, you’ve some big shoes
to fi ll kiddo, but as Gary would tell you,
“The Chamber’s” here to help.
Along with the incredible James Cunningham
as emcee, about 120 Scotiabank folks as
well as community friends of Gary’s, joined in
a celebration, or roast maybe, in sending him
off on a wonderful life of retirement. Emcee,
James Cunningham had a diary of photo’s
from Gary’s past, that wooed the audience at
his worldly experiences as a young man touring
the Middle East and Europe. Gary, we are
very happy you got your hair cut before you
came to Cambridge. Many of his friends in the
bank, former co-workers, bosses and friends
came up to pay tribute, well, sort of. Some of
the stories would have surprised, no, shocked
you to hear about Gary’s antics at Scotiabank
conferences, and one that stuck out most was
the story about Gary throwing $10,000 in cash
in the garbage. All in all, it appeared that Scotiabank
persevered with our old pal Gary, got
their $10,000 back (thanks to the Janitor, and
I bet he’s on Gary’s Christmas list every year),
and they even said how sad it will be to see
Gary take his pension and leave. It was a fond
farewell, probably the best retirement party
of the year, thanks to the comedy of James
Cunningham, author of Funny Money which
Gary himself got involved with Scotiabank as a
youth program on fi nancial literacy.
All the best in your leisure years Mr. Hapke,
we at the Chamber salute you, and to all those
who will miss Gary, as the President/CEO of the
Canadian Chamber
- Strengthens
Canadian Business
by: Honourable Perrin Beatty
As part of your membership with the Cambridge
Chamber of Commerce, you are also an affiliate
member of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
The Canadian Chamber is a powerful organization
that has insurmountable influence on public policy.
The Honourable Perrin Beatty is the President and
CEO of the Canadian Chamber and an extensive
career in developing, analyzing and arguing public
policy. Below is his latest speech to the Finance Committee
of Parliament voicing your concerns and best
interests. To support the Cambridge and Canadian
Chamber’s position on the following, write to your
Member of Parliament.
Thank you, Mr. Chair. It gives me great pleasure
to come before this Committee to present the
views of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce
as you proceed with pre-budget consultations.
As many of you know, the Canadian Chamber
network is the most broadly-based business
association in Canada representing close to
200,000 businesses of all sizes, in all sectors of
the economy and in all regions of the country.
Our members create the jobs, pay the taxes,
power the growth and contribute the leadership
that provides the quality of life we enjoy in our
country. We led the call for our political leaders
to work together on a clear strategy to stimulate
the economy, ensure access to aff ordable
credit and lay the foundations for long-term
economic growth and competitiveness. And
we saw results. Canada’s economy weathered
the fi nancial and economic crisis better than
most industrialized countries and staged an
impressive turnaround. In just four quarters, the
economy recovered all the output and jobs lost
during the recession. No other G7 country can
make such a claim. After the dramatic bounce
back, second quarter GDP results provided
telltale signs of a slowing recovery, and recent
data further confi rmation.
The near-term global economic outlook
remains uncertain, and our economy faces
strong headwinds from weak U.S. demand and
www.cambridgechamber.com
overstretched Canadian households. Continued
vigilance and leadership are required to
secure the recovery and jobs. In our submission
we urged the federal government to follow
through on delivering existing stimulus plans.
The steady fi scal course is essential to reinforce
consumer and investor confi dence.
We also stressed the importance of returning
to budget balance over the medium term. Left
unchecked, high and growing government
debt will drive up interest rates, drain national
savings and threaten our future economic prosperity.
The October economic and fi scal update
reiterated the government’s pledge to balance
its book by fi scal 2015–16. This outcome cannot
be taken for granted. The government will have
to follow through with its commitments to
allow temporary stimulus measures to expire
come March 31, 2011, and constrain growth in
program spending to an average of about two
per cent per year starting in fi scal 2011–12.
The window of opportunity to bring indebtedness
down is rapidly closing as an aging
population and slower growth in the labour
force will exert signifi cant pressures on the
public purse. To meet the challenges, we must
address long-standing structural impediments
to growth. Now more than ever, leadership and
courage are needed to dismantle internal barriers
to trade and mobility, foreign investment
restrictions, overlapping regulations, and work
disincentives in the income-support system
(like Employment Insurance).
Additionally, a better designed and more effi -
cient tax system would lift the economy’s longterm
growth potential. High marginal personal
income tax rates discourage people from working,
saving, and investing, and entrepreneurs
from taking on risk. With growth in Canada’s
labour force slowing, our personal income tax
system must be competitive so we can maintain,
attract and develop one of the most skilled
and productive workforces in the world. This
is why it is so crucial that we maintain a strong
focus on expenditure restraint to recapture our
fi scal fl exibility to deliver meaningful personal
income tax cuts.
Increasing business income taxes or reneging
on promised corporate tax rate reductions
to raise additional revenue is economically
destructive. Businesses have a critical role to
play in sustaining economic growth by initiating
new investments and hiring to expand productive
capacity. Loose talk about canceling the
reductions may cause companies to pull back.
Businesses require certainty and predictability
from their government to operate and invest
with confi dence. Parliamentarians must keep
their word. It has been estimated that giving up
the planned three-point reduction in the federal
general corporate income tax rate would result
in a long-run loss of $47 billion in capital investment
and 233,000 jobs. (School of Public Policy,
University of Calgary).
We also need to ensure Canada’s tax system
is fair, simple and effi cient. It costs businesses
tens of billions of dollars each year to comply
with their tax obligations, the lion’s share of
the burden carried by small and medium-sized
enterprises. These costs are the result of excessive
paperwork due to the complexity of the
tax system, frequent changes in tax legislation,
diff erent rules across jurisdictions and dealing
with multiple audits (federal and provincial/territorial).
For businesses under common ownership and
control, the lack a formal system for transferring
losses between related companies
imposes heavy administration and compliance
costs. More than two thirds of OECD-member
countries permit consolidated tax returns for
groups of related companies. Canada is the only
G7 country that does not. The cost and time associated
with tax compliance stifl es investment,
productivity and economic growth.
Improvements can also be made to Canada’s
Employment Insurance program. Over time,
premium rates must be stabilized so that the EI
program counteracts, or mitigates the negative
eff ects of economic cycles. This is why the
Canadian Chamber is calling on the government
to smooth out premium increases by amending
the rate setting formula with a view of balancing
the EI Account over the business cycle of up
to ten years.
Time is of the essence. We must act now
purposefully and thoughtfully to address both
the immediate and longer-term economic
and budgetary challenges. What is at stake is
nothing less than the future prosperity of every
Canadian.
Search Engine Optimization
(SEO) is one of the most talked
about – and least understood –
marketing topics today.
And it’s no wonder – there are literally
tens of billions of pages on the web. If you
want your company to be found through
a routine search (and “found” means, at
worst, showing up in the first couple pages
of search returns), you have to create and
maintain your website in such a way that
the search engines know what you offer
and where to find you.
Full-blown, high-level SEO is little more
than a dream for most Small to Medium
Enterprises (SMEs). There are many
individuals and companies
who make their entire income
from providing this service
– and some of those incomes are very
significant – with initial setup charges that
can easily go into the tens of thousands
and monthly charges that make your
ASK THE MARKETING EXPERT
Real-World SEO
By Brian Butcher
hydro bill look like petty cash. But what
makes sense for the average SME? Is there a
real-world solution? Is it realistic to expect,
as everyone does, that your site will appear
on that all-important first page?
Fortunately, many of the most effective
“techniques” for improving search results are
fairly straightforward (although
not necessarily quick or easy). If
you are building or maintaining
your site yourself, the tips that
follow may help. If you’re hiring
an outside firm, find out if they
cover these basics first and
judge how far you can go by
how much they’ll charge you.
But be realistic. You won’t get
improved rankings for a couple
hours work or a couple hundred
bucks.
Targeted Keywords & Phrases
It’s critical that you find out what buyers
search for when they are looking for your
product. Take some time and experiment
with Google’s Keyword Tool to learn what
terms are most frequently searched for your
product – then narrow the field. Everyone’s
advertising the keyword “Widgets” but you’ll
rank much better in relevant search if you
target “low intensity hypersonic widgets”
instead. Once you’ve identified effective
keyword strings, use them in you text, titles
and links.
Content Is King!
If you don’t do anything else when
creating or redeveloping your site, pay
close attention to this one. The old days of
fooling search engines into thinking there
was something of value on your site are
over. Search crawlers actually read every
word of your site and judge for themselves
whether or not it’s worth displaying high up
in their results (based, of course, on what
search term the user has input). If you sell
hypersonic widgets, make sure the term
“hypersonic widgets” is included in your text,
and probably more than once.
Title Tags That Make Sense
A Title Tags is that line of html code that
specifies the title of each page. You’ll see it
across the top of your browser window and
search engines pay attention to
it. It’s also the first line that will
appear in an individual search
result. Include your company
name and a relevant reference
to what you would like to be
ranked from the page – “low
intensity hypersonic widgets.”
But beware: a title tag longer
than 65 characters will be
truncated in the search result.
Crosslinks That Make Sense
Crawlers are big on links and effective
crosslinks affect ranking. When was the last
time you searched the term “click here”? No
one else does either. Make your link say what
your prospect will be looking for. Build your
keywords into your crosslinks. Instead of “For
instructions, click here” try “Get operating
instructions for low intensity hypersonic
widget.”
Promote the Likelihood of Quality
Links
Quality links to your website are probably the
most influential factor in determining search
engine rank. If everyone else thinks your
site is worth a look, the search engines will
agree. They will rank your pages as extremely
important if many external pages (and pages
within your site) link to them. So brag a
little. Encourage partners, friends, suppliers,
customers, directories – anyone you can – to
include links to your site on theirs. If there is
ever a good reason to get involved in social
media, this is it. The more places your urls
(page addresses) appear, the more important
they are to the search engines.
Limit Flash and Avoid Frames
Flash websites can be beautiful and very effective at getting your
message across, but you will be much further ahead to use Flash
elements sparingly within your html site. Although the ability of search
engines to index content from Flash pages is evolving and improving, for
now a full Flash site is, for the most part, unsearchable by the crawlers.
Unless you know how to create effective workaround code, it’s probably
best to avoid it. And Frames are pretty much search engine suicide.
Crawlers will only index the frame entry page and not the content frame.
Besides, Frames are ugly, pose printing problems and just so ‘yesterday’.
Think ‘Accessibility’
Most of the enhancements that lead to greater web accessibility for
users with various disabilities also greatly assist search engines in
properly identifying and reading the content of your website. If you have
an image of your product that has an alt tag in the html (an invisible
command to display a graphic) with a description like "product image"
or, worse yet, no alt tag at all, both search engines and users who can't
properly see your imagery will have no idea what that image is. Actually
describe the photo as you would to a person sitting on the other side of
the computer monitor, "photo of a hypersonic widget being used to blow
up the death star" is much more descriptive for the search engine.
It’s All About ROI
Search Engine Optimization has become a huge industry, with huge
costs often attached. But the bottom line for your business has never
www.cambridgechamber.com
changed – it’s all about Return On Investment. If you decide you need to
invest in SEO, you will either spend time or money. If you spend wisely
on SEO, it should bring back returns that are substantially higher than
the costs. Just don’t expect miracles. Unless you truly are a one-of-a-kind
company with a one-of-a-kind product, there’s a lot of competition on
those billions of pages. And since those pages change every day, as do
the technologies and strategies of the search engines, SEO is a moving
target that has to be monitored and maintained to remain effective.
Great women are not considered so because
of personal achievements, but for
the effect their efforts have had on the
lives of countless others. From daring
feats of bravery to the understated ways
of a compassionate heart, great women
possess a common strength of character.
Through their passion and persistence,
they have advanced womanhood and the
world.
~ Peggy Anderson
The Secrets of
Successful Women
in Business
Learn about others – ask a lot of questions, listen
to the answers and commit them to memory (or at
least your BlackBerry). Relationships will fl ourish if
you demonstrate your ability to care about people’s
lives and interests beyond the scope of the business
deal you are discussing. I think women have a particular
strength in this area.
Balancing work/family life is tricky. I never have as
much time as I would like to have with my children
so I make sure that the time I do have is quality
time. I work hard but I also play hard.
Balance in our lives is one of the toughest things
to achieve. If we strive for it, it will make all of
our accomplishments more rewarding. Having
the ability to say we're happy with our personal
relationships, proud of our successes in the
workplace and that we've been able to "give
back" to the community is the ultimate success
we could hope for.
Have passion for all that you do. Your actions
will speak volumes and encourage those surrounding
you to strive for the same goals and
successes. Believe that you can make a diff erence.
Do"small" things great and the rest will
10 Tips To Avoid
Work At Home
Mom Burnout
Working from home is a great way to stay home
with your kids while still supplementing the
family’s income. On the flipside, it can be challenging
to be mother and employee at the same
time. Your stress level will rise quickly when you
have deadlines to keep or phone calls to make
while your little ones are acting out. Implement
a few of the ideas below to prevent Work at
Home Mom Burnout.
1. Don’t work more than you have to. Money
isn’t everything. You family needs a happy and
sane mom.
2. Create a schedule or to-do list both for work
and your personal life. Just realize that you
won’t always get everything done and don’t
worry if you don’t. There’s always tomorrow.
3. Designate an errand day. Spend one day a
week running around town getting everything
done for the week. This is when you will grocery
shop, drop things off at the drycleaner, go to
the post office and anything else you need to
do.
4. Enjoy your kids. Take some time to play with
them every day. Have a picnic lunch in the
yard, take them on a little field trip or just play
catch for a while. You’re a work at home mom
because you want to spend time with your kids.
Work and house chores can wait while you play.
5. Go out on a date with your husband. Make
date night a regular occurrence and connect
with your husband.
6. Have lunch with a girlfriend. We need some
adult conversation every now and then. Make
time to stay in touch with your friends.
7. Call a friend. If you are having a bad day, call a
good friend and just talk for a little while. You’ll
be relaxed and rejuvenated when you get back.
8. Get some exercise. Go for a walk, join a gym,
or try a Pilate’s class. Exercise will not only keep
you in shape, it’s also a great de-stressor.
9. Play some upbeat music and dance around
the living room. Who cares if your kids and the
neighbors think you’ve lost it? You are having
fun and are releasing all that build up physical
energy.
10. If you own a business, stick to one until it
more or less runs itself. Don’t burn yourself out
by trying to run several businesses at the same
time.
Start implementing a few of these ideas today
and watch your stress level go down. You will
prevent work at home mom burnout and get
to enjoy life more. Your family will appreciate
spending time with a fun and relaxed mom.
Belong, Engage,
Lead and Prosper.
Everyone wants to Belong, whether it’s belonging
to a service club, group of friends, or just a
family, belonging is a
sense of having a
stake in something
bigger
than yourself.
Belonging to
the Chamber is
like belonging to
a family. We share common interest, like the
economy, legislation and we even share the
need to connect with others whom we belong
with. A wise person once said, people do business
with people they know. Well the Chamber
has known that for years, and we’ve even built
in a core practice that commits this organization
in developing programs that hinge on
connecting people with people so they can get
to know one another.
Belonging from a community perspective is
about uniting our voices, to ensure business can
www.cambridgechamber.com
continue to be vibrant, so jobs can be created
and kept, and prosperity can be generated for
this and advanced generations. We’ve got a lot
going for us in Cambridge, we have a fantastic
location, we have a diverse economic structure
and we have a Chamber of Commerce that
is committed to growing our community in a
manner that speaks to prosperity, health and
safety.
Belonging to the Chamber strengthens our
voice and empowers the business community
to keep our community progressive. We’ve a lot
of work to do yet, that’s why we invite you to
Belong, be part of our corporate family, get to
know more like-minded entrepreneurs and help
us build the community we all want.
We might be going out on a bit of a limb, but
the fact is, size matters! In this world of disjointed
government policy, a time when getting new
customers is a huge challenge and getting help
with business issues is more diffi cult than ever.
The Chamber Network can be your best business
tool. Our strength is in our numbers, the
more members we have, the more opportunities
there are for us to make those all important
connections for you, the stronger our voice is
in challenging anti-business legislation, at any
level of government and our access to resources
to help you and your business, becomes even
greater.
You are our advocate on the street, while we
have dedicated staff out there pounding on
doors and building our membership, the best
way for us to get new members is by having
YOU, our committed and dedicated member,
refer your peers and friends to membership in
the Chamber. You know it all too well, there is
nothing better than a referral.
In fact, you are probably doing yourself and your
business a great service, we can help them, they
know you were the one to recommend us, a big
circle of infl uence and as we grow, our infl uence
grows dramatically. We have a better position in
local, provincial and Federal governments and
here is where we need your help.
Refer a member today, tell them why you
BELONG and why they should as well. You know
we are here, you know we can help, you know
we off er great savings on our affi nity programs.
We want to grow, we want to build our strength
in numbers to make an even greater impact on
our business community. So? Size does matter
and you can make a real diff erence.
Canadian Chamber
of Commerce
Economic Update:
Employment Report
Statistics Canada reported this morning that
15,200 net jobs were created in November. The
details of the report were less encouraging.
Over the past year, part-time employment has
grown at a faster pace than full time employment,
and this trend continued in November.
Public sector employment rose by a solid
21,100. The private sector shed jobs (-11,500)
and more Canadians became self-employed
(+5,700).
The unemployment rate edged down to 7.6% in
November from 7.9% in October. The main reason
for the 0.3 percentage points point drop: A
large number of people exited the labour force
(43,600), primarily youths.
The goods-producing sector as a whole shed
21,000 net positions as a result of a large drop
in manufacturing jobs. Payrolls jumped in the
services sector (+36,200) thanks to increased
hiring in retail and wholesale trade (+26,200),
health care and social assistance (28,400) and
accommodation and food services (16,600).
These gains were partly off set by declines in
fi nance, insurance and real estate (-22,900).
On a regional basis, only three provinces saw
job gains. There was a notable pickup in net
employment in Ontario (+31,200) and smaller
job gains in Saskatchewan (+1,200) and British
Columbia (+4,300). Employment in Quebec
edged down (-14,100). Employment levels were
fl at or slightly lower in the rest of the provinces.
Since November 2009, total employment has
risen by 318,200 (+1.9%). About 266,000 jobs
have been added by the private sector and
108,800 by the public sector. The number of
self-employed Canadians dropped by 56,300
over the same period.
Employment growth was very robust in the
fi rst half of 2010. In the second half of the year,
the economy is struggling to create new jobs.
Employers are more reluctant to hire given the
uncertainty in the economic outlook. Businesses
are also focusing on achieving productivity
gains from new equipment or new processes
rather than through new hires.
In the fi rst half of 2011, I expect monthly gains
in the order of 5,000–15,000 per month, consistent
with the sluggish pace of economic growth.
ASK THE EXPERT
Tech Tips for Small Business
Why text messaging makes sense for business
Because of its reputation as a casual tool for personal communication, texting for business use has been slow to catch on. But the benefi
ts of texting are attractive from a business perspective: real-time communication that’s faster than email, often more cost eff ective
than mobile voice, and ubiquitous even in industries where smartphones are underpenetrated.
Today, texting technology is evolving rapidly, making it even more valuable as a business communications tool. Consider these tips for
making the most of texting in your business:
Keep your costs under control, no matter
where you—and your contacts—may be
Often, a simple text message can replace an expensive
mobile voice call. If you text frequently,
ask your provider about text message add-on
packages for your monthly wireless plan that can
bring costs down to less than 1¢ per message.
If you do a lot of international texting, be sure
to ask your supplier for an international texting
package that can bring rates down to as low as
4¢ per message.
Text messaging and more
As texting technology advances, you can do a lot
more than just sending a simple text message.
With Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), you
can add images, audio or even video to your text
messages. The business applications are endless.
Some providers are now off ering enhanced
text messaging services that bring many of the
features typically associated with email to text
messaging, vastly increasing its capabilities.
With enhanced text messaging, you can send
texts to large groups at one time, add a personal
signature to your messages, and block unwanted
texts. Some services also let you forward texts to
another mobile device, save copies of your texts
by sending them to your email address, or set up
an out-of-offi ce auto-reply, an important consideration
when using text messaging for business.
Texting and Tweeting: a Natural Combination
If you use Facebook or Twitter to keep customers
updated on your business, you can post updates
to these sites directly from your mobile phone
with a simple text message. Even more importantly,
your customers can receive your tweets or
status updates via text message, ensuring they
stay up to date on what you want them to know,
wherever they may be.
Taking texting to the next level with
mobile marketing
Many mobile marketing initiatives involve sending
text or rich-media MMS messages promot-
ing a product, service, off er or event. While,
stringent guidelines require marketers to ensure
that recipients of marketing text messages “opt
in”, mobile marketing is an eff ective and costeffi
cient way of staying top-of-mind with existing
customers, and generating new cross-sell and
up-sell opportunities. Text messaging technology
can also be used for polling and inviting customers
to enter contests.
Texting goes beyond the cell phone
While the obvious form of text messaging
involves direct communication between two mobile
devices, the technology can be far more fl exible.
Consider the effi ciency of sending text messages
to fi eld staff directly from your computer.
Ask your provider about a free, downloadable
SMS plug-in that allows you to send text messages
right from Microsoft Outlook or Outlook
Express. Or, most providers will create an email
address associated with your wireless number,
and you can send emails via text message.
Smart new ways to text on your
smartphone
If you don’t subscribe to enhanced text messaging
services through your provider, smartphones
also off er applications that make texting more
valuable for your business. Visit Blackberry® App
World (appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/category/12),
Apple App store for iPhone (www.apple.
com/ca/iphone/business/apps-for-iphone/), or
other device and carrier app stores, and consider
applications such as these to help you make the
most of your business text messaging:
Archive your incoming and outgoing text
messages
Personalize messages to larger groups
Create templates for messages you send
frequently
Use text-to-speech technology to read your text
messages aloud.
Homecoming,
innovation &
vision.
If I had to choose three words to describe
my work with the Cambridge Chamber of
Commerce those would fi t the bill perfectly.
Homecoming? Not exactly a word you hear
in business all that often is it? But this is a
homecoming story because I’m a born and bred
Cambridge/Kitchener boy. I was educated and
now live in Hamilton but found myself drawn
back to the area for business. Just as I expected,
I rediscovered a vibrant, forward-thinking city
with impressive opportunities for business.
Once in town, I joined your Chamber of
Commerce for the same reasons you did. To
help my business grow, get connected and to
be inspired by exceptional and like-minded
business owners. I thought it would be like every
other Chamber I’ve been a part of. What I found
was very unique. Let me explain.
The Cambridge Chamber of Commerce didn’t
want to simply maintain the status quo with
their membership. They wanted to take bold
steps forward, to revolutionize the way they
communicate with, interact with and serve
their members. In other words their goal
was to be one of the most dynamically
accessible and responsive Chambers
in the country. Mission
accomplished.
President of FPM3
MOBILE WEB
Here’s how it happened...
My company is FPM3. We are a full service
marketing fi rm that creates outstanding online
and social media applications. We have one
goal: helping clients experience phenomenal
business growth by helping them make deeper
online and social media connections to their
customer base. We do this by developing and
implementing extraordinarily smart, intuitive
and advanced online applications and products.
Sounds complex so let me translate: FPM3
creates online apps that humans like to use.
That’s it in a nutshell. We take highly complex
computer code and programs and turn them
into human friendly applications that build
business.
So what did my team at FPM3 do to help the
Cambridge Chamber of Commerce meet its goal
of improved communication for members? Here
are a few highlights:
THE MINGLE ® : The Mingle® is an exciting
video technology FPM3 created to enable a
virtual Chamber representative to appear on
their website. This virtual rep walks through
the screen and talks to the website visitor. The
Mingle® is a memorable and personal website
upgrade that’s surprisingly aff ordable.
LIVE CHAT: Visiting a website can feel like a
one-way street and can leave visitors with more
questions than answers. Now, with FPM3’s
live chat option, the Cambridge Chamber of
Commerce is a two way street. You log on to the
website, ask questions and get answers from
their online representative. A real person, in
real time. With no delay and no stock answers.
I invite you to visit the Chamber site today and
experience live chat for yourself.
MOBILE WEB: To better meet the needs of
members using smart phones, the Chamber
THE
MINGLE
LIVE CHAT
approved an exciting and proprietary mobile
web developed at FPM3. This mobile web
ensures the Chamber’s website works perfectly
when accessed through an iPhone, Blackberry
or Android cell phone. If desired, members who
are on the road can get turn by turn directions
to Chamber events from their exact location,
no matter where they are or how lost they may
be! Leading edge technology for a leading edge
Chamber of Commerce.
It’s quite a story of innovation, vision and
guts. And now your Cambridge Chamber of
Commerce is the fi rst in Canada and possibly in
North America to have these member-fi rst style
of mobile programs. I’m proud to have been a
part of it.
Wanting to keep doing business here in my
hometown, I’ve taken a bold step - FPM3 now
has a Cambridge offi ce. Sean Carter is our
Cambridge Managing Partner and ‘go to guy’.
Call us to welcome us to town and fi nd out how
you can grow your business online and through
social media at surprisingly low costs. We also
appreciate tips on where to get a great lunch.
Who says you can’t go home again? In my
experience when home is Cambridge, it’s
impossible to stay away!
DOLLARS & SENSE
www.cambridgechamber.com
It is NOT to good to be true.
If this is something that you are hearing about for the
first time please read to appreciate the tax benefits
you might be missing by not considering this type of
investment/savings account.
By having a TFSA, you can contribute up to $5,000
a year, earn tax-free investment income and even
make withdrawals without paying tax. It is an ideal
complement to your existing Retirement Saving Plan
(RSP) or Retirement Income Fund (RIF) – offering you an
additional tax-smart savings strategy.
Within your RSP or RIF, your investment earnings grow
on a tax-deferred basis, which means you don’t pay tax
on the earnings until you eventually withdraw them –
typically resulting in faster growth. But with the TFSA,
your investment earnings grow on a tax-free basis,
which means you never pay tax on them – not even at
the time of withdrawal. This tax-free growth enables
your savings to grow much faster than they otherwise
would.
A flexible savings tool
The TFSA is an extremely flexible savings account that
can meet a wide range of needs. It can help you:
lSave for short-term goals like financing home
renovations or long-term goals like retirement.
lBuild additional tax-advantaged retirement savings
above and beyond your RSP.
lEarn tax-free income on surplus RIF payments that you
don’t currently need.
lBoost a family member’s education savings beyond
their Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP).
lReduce your family’s overall taxes when you give
investable assets exposed to your higher
tax rate to your spouse or adult children
to contribute to their own TFSAs.
lShelter fully taxable interest income
that you are currently earning in a
taxable account.
lCreate a contingency fund for
emergencies or time-sensitive opportunities.
How does the TFSA work?
Any Canadian resident aged 18 and
older with a Social Insurance Number
can open a TFSA. In some provinces, you
have to wait until you turn 19 (British
Columbia, Yukon, Northwest Territories,
The Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA)
New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland &
Labrador). However, TFSA contribution room starts
accumulating at age 18 regardless of your province of
residence.
Making contributions
You can contribute up to $5,000 to your TFSA in 2009
and, in future years, this amount will be indexed to
inflation in $500 increments. You can also gift funds to
your spouse or adult child to contribute to their own
plans.
lThere is no income requirement to contribute to a
TFSA – you can make contributions even if you have no
income.
lWhile your contributions are not tax-deductible against
your income, as they are with an RSP, any investment
income they earn accumulates tax-free.
lIf you don’t use all of your available contribution room
in a given year, it carries forward indefinitely. There is no
age limit on how long you can contribute to your TFSA –
it’s a lifelong plan.
Making withdrawals
You can withdraw as much as you want, whenever you
want, for whatever reason you want – and you pay no
taxes on the withdrawal. What’s more, any amounts you
withdraw are added to your available contribution room
for future years.
This type of account would be beneficial for almost
everyone so consult your advisor as to how you can
open an account or feel free to call our office at
At the beginning
of our 2010 fall
campaign, I asked
you a ques on,
“Could you please
support United Way?”
Thank you to all who answered that ques on
with a dona on to United Way. Thank you for
thinking of WE before ME. Underneath everything
we are, underneath everything we do
we are all people. Connected, interdependent,
UNITED. When we reach out a hand to one;
we infl uence the condi on of all. That is what
it means to LIVE UNITED.
As a Chamber member you play an important
role in our community. There is a quote about
when looking for people to help move a piano,
you can always fi nd lots of people willing to
move the stool. Fortunately for our community
we have some Chamber members, who
helped us move the piano.
As we start 2011, please remember to keep
United Way in your thoughts throughout the
year and share with others why you contribute
and the importance of doing so. If you don’t
already contribute, we hope this will be your
year.
The United Way of Cambridge and North Dumfries
funds 24 local agencies and 46 programs
and services that posi vely impact people’s
lives. Community Impact is about achieving
meaningful, long-term improvements to
quality of life in our community—addressing
not just the symptoms of problems but also
ge ng at the root causes. It’s about making
fundamental changes to community condi-
 ons.
United Way funded programs and services
help those who can use skill upgrading to
ensure equal opportunity employment, ensure
families can access counselling to guide them
through challenging situa ons and strengthen
their family rela onships, ensure children have
mentors in their lives to provide posi ve role
models, and ensure a safe place for newcomer
youth to celebrate diff erent cultures, build
friendships, and feel involved in the community.
They help people like Rifaat…
“THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE!”
Rifaat is 12 and a ends the Drop-in Rec Program
at the YMCA, simply called “The Z.” He
joined other members on a trip to a Toronto
Argonauts game. Like most of the group, Rifaat
had never been to a professional sports game,
or to Toronto. His name was drawn to go onto
the football fi eld and receive a jersey. There he
met Jeff Johnson, an Argo who took his jersey
and his gloves off and handed them to Rifaat,
saying “The jersey is for everybody at the Z,
but these are for you.” Rifaat said it was the
best day of his life.
Spiritual Health
I certainly hope that everyone had a wonderful and fulfi lling holiday
season. We have so much to be thankful for living in Canada. But who
are we to thank? In this issue, we are going to discuss a
topic that is very important, especially during this time
of year. It is essential that we stay healthy during these
chilly months, and I hope that some of this discussion
is pertinent to you. Overall health and wellness can be
measured by the following 5 pillars of health: Mental/
Emotional, Physical, Chemical/Nutritional, Financial and
this issue's topic, Spiritual Health. As always, I encourage
feedback on the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce
website, www.cambridgechamber.com. Share with me
what you've been doing to maintain your spiritual health,
both in the winter and year round.
Mental, physical and spiritual health are deeply intertwined, and aff ect
each other greatly. What is spiritual health? It is being connected with
your inner self, with your faith, with your belief systems. Being healthy
ASK THE DOCTOR
The Five Pillars of Health
By Dr. Mark Guker
spiritually helps us to demonstrate love, hope and a sense of caring for
ourselves and in turn, for others. It is important to note that we are
not talking about religion specifi cally here. Many people fi nd spiritual
fulfi llment in religion, but it is only one of many ways. In my line of
work, I am blessed to come in contact with people from many diff erent
backgrounds and as a result many diff erent spiritual beliefs. I
have always taken great interest in discovering the spiritual
beliefs of my patients and what is most important to them in
life. I was raised in a family where spiritual health or faith was
valued as important but was considered an individual matter
and belief. I have had many infl uential people in my life that
have shaped my spiritual health, and I know that I can lean on
these very special people whenever this aspect of my health
suff ers.
Spirituality can help us through the good and the bad in
life. I see many people with chronic or even terminal illness.
Those that seem to do better, that live a “fuller” life, are those with
good spiritual health. When one is connected, or spiritually healthy,
our physical and emotional pains are easier to deal with. We truly feel
32 www.cambridgechamber.com
Winter 2011

lighter, happier, more fulfi lled. Nourishing the soul is as important as
eating healthy, as keeping stress low and as exercising. Most people
unfortunately are unaware of the importance of spiritual health. We are
caught up in the whirlwind that is our life. We have bills to pay, hockey
practices to get to, and colleagues to be angry with. Often times it takes
a downturn in one’s health, or a serious loss for someone to become
concerned or aware of their spiritual health. I intend to use this forum as
a way to introduce to some people the importance of, and the path to,
spiritual health.
But how does one attain better spiritual health? Just as physical health
improvement, it does not occur overnight. I encourage people to start
slowly, but start today. Step 1: Tune into your inner self and fi nd out
what it is that makes you truly happy. What gives you inner peace,
strength, harmony? Many people fi nd this in daily rituals, such as going
to church, yoga or meditation. For some, it may be reading a book,
gardening, golfi ng or listening to music. Whatever this “thing” is, do it
often. Another important trait that I take from all of those in my life, who
are spiritually healthy, is to use humour and to be gracious. We should
laugh with the people in our life that we love, and we should be thankful
for those people. We need to use humour to lighten the burden of our
days. We need to be thankful for our health, for sunshine, for good food
and for good friends. When you start to employ
these two traits, you will feel an immediate
improvement in your spiritual health.
Next, there are several important
steps that one must ensure that
he meets every day. Take some
time out of your busy schedule to
be quiet, and to be alone. This may
be used to read, or just to think. This is
the start of every meditation technique and is very
powerful for developing spiritual health. Next, be open. Open to new
things, open to share your life with others and open to your environment.
Have an open mind and talk to people in your life that you wouldn’t have
otherwise. It is amazing how much we can learn from people who are
www.cambridgechamber.com
so seemingly diff erent from us. Find commonality in mankind, it makes
you aware that you are not alone on this journey of life. Next, practice
forgiveness. Allow people in your life to make mistakes, as nobody is
perfect. Take the feeling that you get from forgiving someone and bottle
it. This is what improving spiritual health feels like. Have purpose. In our
offi ce we have a mission statement, which is readily available for patients/
visitors to read. Let people know why you live the way you do, and live
each and every moment with that purpose in mind.
Spiritual health is not something that one needs to spend money on. It
does not necessarily involve weekend getaways or self-help books. All
that we need to do is to become aware, and then use some of the tips
that I have shared. Once you identify the need for spiritual health, it
becomes a way of life. Be thankful, have a positive outlook, laugh and
be open. Understand that spiritual health is not something that comes
without hard work. Spiritual health takes place throughout one’s life, and
the fi rst step is to become aware. Find out what makes you happy – it will
be the most important discovery you will ever make. Love those around
you, and allow yourself to believe that some things are beyond measure,
and that it’s ok to believe in something that is not easily explainable.
The WOW Cambridge Customer Service
Program is open to entries for individuals in a
wide spectrum of our business sectors within
our community including industry, commerce,
tourism, the public sector and non-profit or
charitable organizations of all sizes.
Customer service has always been recognized
as the key to business success and is now the
most talked about issue in boardrooms across
the country. The role of those responsible for
the delivery and management of customer
service is vital within our marketplace. What
does your customer want? Satisfaction! How
do you ensure that? Excellent customer
service!
Each month the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce
will recognize an individual who has
gone above and beyond, providing what your
customer sees as extraordinary service in an
everyday situation.
These individuals and the businesses they
work for exemplify service excellence, and
most are completely surprised to be awarded
for what they believe is merely "doing their
job."
You will continually hear inspiring stories,
customers who have gone out of their way to
publicly say thanks for a job well done. Our
Annual Grand Winner and all other award winners
and nominees are raising the bar for their
competition and community peers. Increasing
the standard of service in our community can
and will give Cambridge, the Waterloo Region,
Newly elected and re-elected Regional Council will be debating once again the LRT/BRT Regional Transportation
proposal given the Provinces reduction in funding. What message do you have for Regional Councillors as they debate
this proposal/project in the coming months?
If the Conestoga Parkway was not built when it was, think of how
much worse our traffi c mess would be today than it already is. It
was visionary and expensive at the me. What if a north/south
expressway had been built around Cambridge?
I know this plan has been studied extensively and is part of a
master plan to intensify development and bring back the city core
areas. I would say that you always need to control costs but we
should proceed. It will never be more aff ordable than today.
Neil Bailey, Rela onship Manager, TD Commercial Banking
“At what point do poli cians act responsibly with money that they
neither earn or have to account for. Is this was visionary, where
was the vision when Hespeler Road was re-built over the last 10
years? Where was the vision when the highway 7&8 interchange
was rebuilt? Where is the vision in the changes to highway 8
from the 401 north, which I believe runs right by Fairview Mall?
So we are going to come along, with roads that we have re-built
over the last 10 years and are con nuing to re-build, and now say,
oops, we need to allow for the right of way for a LRT line and a
Rapid Bus System. That is not vision but rather a lack of it. This
region is nothing more than a fat piggy bank to the poli cians.”
Lorne C. Wallace C.A. B.Comm., Chief Execu ve Offi cer
Lone Wolf Real Estate Technologies
I'm not in favour of the Light Rail. I think it would be an expensive,
under-u lized project that would waste a lot of the tax payers'
money. They should put more money into increasing and improving
the present transit system instead.
Steve Walker
MEMBERS SPEAK OUT
My message to Regional Council would be to rethink the en re
proposal and develope an aff ordable rapid bus system for the Region.
Without the needed funding from the Feds and the Province
it is not appropriate to load the cost diff eren al on the backs of
tax payers. Also, in the case of Cambridge, it is totally unreasonable
to suggest that Cambridge taxpayers will contribute to an
LRT system that won't be built in Cambridge for another 15 to 20
years!
Karl Kiefer , Sunlife Advisor
There is no need for Cambridge tax payers to have their taxes increased
by 15 to 20% scheme to move people between Kitchener
and Waterloo by Streetcar. We have empty busses roaming
our streets now. The true cost of this debacle is being hidden.
Installing overhead power lines and pu ng rail lines on to already
busy King Street is only part of the cost. Employees will need to
be hired to manage the Streetcar System, Offi ce space will be
required, the system will need to be maintained and facili es to
house and maintain the Streetcars. There is not a public transit
system in Canada that is self sustaining. If Ken Seiling wants
Streetcars, I’m sure the new Mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford, would
gladly give him theirs. This is just another example of why we
need to get rid of Regional Government and go to a Management
Board model.
