In Remembrance Stoakley W. Swanson `52 died May 9, 2009. Stoakley was a professor Emeritus of Marketing in the Business School at Sacramento State University. He was at Wayland for four years and served as president of his class; he received the Edwin Putnam Brown award at graduation. Friends will remember him for his critical — and often contrarian — thinking that imbued his observations with illustrative quotations and aphorisms, characteristic of his unique personality. In 1981, he became a faculty member at Sacramento State where he was active in campus affairs, serving as Chair of the Marketing Department and as a faculty senator for both local and statewide offices. He was a key member of the California Faculty Association where he participated with the collective bargaining team in negotiating the faculty union’s first system-wide contract in the mid- 1980’s, and later left the party as an Independent. He retired from the faculty at Sacramento State in December 1997. Connie M. Koehne H`66 (former faculty) died January 8, 2009. Connie started piano lessons at four years old with her father as her teacher. She attended Marycrest College, Davenport, Iowa, and graduated with a B.A. in music from DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois. After college, she toured as an accompanist with her brother Richard. She became the staff pianist at Mount St. Mary’s On-the- Fox Academy. She also was the first pianist with the Elgin Symphony Orchestra and taught at Elgin Academy, where she met her husband, Bill. In 1965, they moved to Beaver Dam because Wayland Academy offered Bill a teaching position. Shortly, her accompanying ability was discovered. She began playing for liturgies throughout the area, especially St. Patrick’s Church. Connie also taught private piano lessons until she retired in 2004. In 1973, Bill passed away, and Connie decided to stay in Beaver Dam. At that time she became Chair of the Music Department at Wayland. Connie retired from Wayland in 1991 and continued to play for liturgies, weddings, and funerals well into 2008. William G. Ellis H`67, former President of Wayland Academy and New England College, and Dean of the School of Business and Legal Studies at Concordia University, died March 3, 2009. An alumnus of Williston Northampton School in Massachusetts, Ellis received his B.S. from Babson College in 1962, and an Ed. D. from Pennsylvania State University in 1968. He also held master’s degrees from Suffolk University (Business Administration, 1963), Westfield State College (Education, 1965), and Concordia University Wisconsin (Administration, 1991), and completed professional programs at The University of Chicago, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Harvard University. During a career in higher education that spanned more than 46 years, Bill distinguished himself as visionary and a leader, serving as Chair of Business and Director of Continuing Education at Castleton State College in Vermont (1969-72), Executive Vice President at the College of St. Joseph in Vermont (1972-73), and Academic Vice President and Dean of the Graduate School at Thomas College in Waterville, Maine (1973-82). In 1982, Ellis was named President of Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Over the next 13 years, he fostered the Academy’s capital campaigns, improved its physical plant and endowment, developed innovative academic programs, and advanced athletics. Following his tenure at Wayland, Dr. Ellis became President of New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. In 1997, he and wife Nancy returned to Wisconsin, where he served as Dean of the School of Business and Legal Studies at Concordia University through June 2008. Upon his retirement, Concordia named him Dean Emeritus. He was awarded the Exceptional Service Award by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (1994), the Distinguished Service Citation by Wayland Academy (1995), and was twice named Business Professor of the Year by his students at Concordia University (1999, 2007). In 2001, he received the Excellence in Education award from Penn State University’s College of Education, the highest honor bestowed upon a College of Education alumnus for significant contributions to the field of education. An active community member, William Ellis served as Director of Bank One of Beaver Dam, Director and Board Chair of Beaver Dam Community Hospitals, Inc., Director of Westra Construction Corporation, and served consecutive terms as President of the Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce. While at Thomas College, he served as Corporator for Maine Savings Bank and First Consumers Savings Bank. He also served as head tennis coach at Babson College, where he had been a standout tennis and squash player, winning the small college New England singles championship in tennis. He later served as head tennis coach at Thomas College, where he produced two NAIA New England singles champions, and Wayland Academy, leading the boys tennis team to two undefeated seasons and producing a state singles champion. www.wayland.org 39
