It was painted at a favorite spot of mine, Power’s Bluff State Natural Area and county park. It is known for its outstanding spring flora and 150 year old stone circles made by the Prairie Potowatomi. The circles were made by native people, who walked back to Wisconsin after their expulsion to Oklahoma. The prayer and dance circles were concurrent with the appearance of the Ghost Dance religion of the western states. While many people can paint a beautiful scene, my motivation for doing this painting, as with all my paintings, is to do much more than that. I am attempting to capture the intangible presence of these places through the suggestion of light, brush strokes, form, and color. The “presence” of these places evokes a certain emotional and instinctive response, which I am hoping can be seen and felt by others through my work. Cover Painting by Terrill Knaack
