Meanwhile, Dr. Lake and Ms.
Hutchison [the Latin teachers] were
half-wizards. “A lifetime of studying
Latin for intellectual satisfaction? Who
are you kidding? You clearly just want
to do magic.”
For himself, Brendan realized that he
was much like the “half-crazed
Hermione Granger,” whose assiduous
dedication to studies made her nearly
catatonic at times.
Brendan’s profound panegyric to his
now-alma mater concluded with the
proclamation that, “for every struggle
there has been at Wayland, there has
been a rewarding time of hanging out
with friends, making bad jokes, and
doing absurd things to overcome the
daunting schedules and demands levied
upon us. In the end, I am somewhat
glad I didn’t go to Hogwarts. Most of
the people I’ve come to know here are
clearly Gryffindors, a few Ravenclaws
and Hufflepuffs as well. And even
some of the Slytherins really aren’t that
bad. Anyway, word on the street is that
Hogwarts got hit by the swine flu and
the recession pretty bad.”
The Valedictory speech allowed Addie
Rauschert to reflect on the four-year
process at Wayland. Freshman year,
she recalled, “the infamous breakfast
sign-in broke us in to the Wayland
ways. We learned to roll out of bed at
7:28, to drag our groggy bodies in
wrinkled, non-matching Wayland dress
code down to the dining hall, to make
it in time to sign our greatly desired
autographs by 7:30 a.m.”
Then sophomore year, “we rejoiced in
no longer being the youngest class;
finally we had someone we could push
around.”
“Junior Year we relished becoming
upperclassmen… The year flew by as we
Distinguished Service Citation recipient
and Trustee Emeritus Dick Kimberly `54
managed our schedules, played sports,
performed in theatre productions, and
began the college search.”
Then senior year came, and among
other things allowed that “we heard
back from colleges, deposited our
money, and now here we are, all
decked out in the Wayland red,
preparing to say good-bye to the place
that has been home to us for one, two,
three, or four years.” Rauschert ended
her speech with a big thank you to all
of the Wayland family.
