I want to express a very warm welcome to the graduates, families and friends who join us today. 

Convocation is the University’s most important ceremony, for it is here that we celebrate the 

accomplishments of our students and the contributions of their loved ones to their success. You 

should be proud of this day, and of the commitment and sacrifice that it represents. 

We at the University of Saskatchewan salute you – our graduates – and we extend to you our 

very best wishes for the future. We hope that you will stay in touch with us through our University 

of Saskatchewan alumni family, and that we will have the opportunity to welcome you ‘home’ to 

our campus many times in the years ahead.

2001 Spring Convocation 

The word “Convocation” arises from the Latin “con” 

meaning “together,” and “vocare” meaning “to call.” 

Our Convocation ceremony is a calling together of the 

new graduates of the University of Saskatchewan, 

symbolizing the historical practice of calling together all 

former graduates. In current 

times, the major functions of 

Convocation are the election of 

representatives to University 

governing bodies and the 

admission of candidates to 

degrees. The Chancellor, elected 

by convocation as its Chair, is 

the highest official and spokesperson 

of the University. 

The Convocation ceremony 

marks the transition from the 

role of student to the holder of a 

degree with its accompanying 

rights and privileges. Candidates 

for degrees, known as 

graduands, having completed 

the requirements of a course of 

study, are recommended by 

college faculties and the 

University Council to receive 

degrees from the University of 

Saskatchewan. 

The ceremony, solemnized in the presence of the 

University community and family and friends of the 

graduands, consists of three parts: a procession marking 

the leaving of the old status and entering the new; the 

President’s statement to the graduands, the Secretary’s 

petition and the Chancellor’s 

consent for their admission; 

followed by individual presentation 

by their Dean and admission by the 

Chancellor to the degrees to which 

they are entitled. As graduates are 

admitted to their degrees, a 

graduation hood, which has a 

colour symbolizing a particular 

degree, is placed over each 

graduate’s head. A banner 

displaying the University crest is 

hung above the stage, as a symbol 

of the University’s authority to 

confer degrees. 

We honour and welcome this year’s graduates! 

Following the conferring of degrees 

and acceptance of each graduate as 

a member of Convocation, a 

reception is held – a celebration on 

the occasion of the formal transition 

from the role of learner to the role 

of producer and contributor in the 

field of the graduate’s choice. 


The Chancellor 

Margaret (Peggy) L. McKercher 

Peggy McKercher was elected chancellor of the 

University of Saskatchewan in July 1995. In her 

role as Chancellor she serves as a member of the Board 

of Governors and as Chair of University Senate. She 

also serves on the Senate Honorary 

Degree Committee and Chairs the 

Senate Executive Committee. 

Mrs. McKercher is a University of 

Saskatchewan graduate and former 

faculty member. She served as 

University representative and Chair of 

the Meewasin Valley Authority in 

Saskatoon from 1979 to 1995. She 

also served as Vice-Chair of 

Wanuskewin Heritage Park, developed 

and built by Meewasin which houses 

a state of the art University of 

Saskatchewan Archaeological lab 

interpreting 6000 years of Plains 

Indian history. She is a Board 

member of the National Capital Commissions’ 

Canadiana Fund and a member of the Board of 

Directors of the Institute for Society and Humanity. 

She is also a member of the Saskatchewan Arts Board 

and a member of the Advisory Board for the Trans 

Canada Trail Foundation. 

Mrs. McKercher has served on the Mayor’s South 

Downtown Task Force, the Saskatchewan Medical 

Research Foundation, the Saskatchewan Order of Merit 

Advisory Committee, the Jeux Canada Games Board 

of Directors, ParticipACTION Board of Directors, 

Canadian Water Resources Board of Directors, and 

chaired the Sherbrooke Community 

Centre Fund Raising Campaign. She 

was the first woman to be elected to 

the Rural Municipality of Corman Park 

Council and served as Deputy Reeve 

and on numerous committees. 

Mrs. McKercher was honoured as 

Saskatoon Citizen of the Year in 1989. 

Other awards include the Rosalie 

Early Memorial Award, the 

Saskatchewan Report Award for 

Dedication of Excellence, the 

Governor General’s Canada 125 

Award, and the Ernst and Young, Bank 

of Montreal Award for Socially 

Responsible Entrepreneur of the Year, 

Western Canada for 1994. On March 1, 1995 she was 

invested with the Order of Canada. 

As a student Peggy was well known in University 

athletics and student government. She is a member 

of the Athletic Wall of Fame, University of 

Saskatchewan and a recipient of the Spirit of Youth 

Award. 

Peggy’s term as Chancellor ends this June. 


Honorary Doctor of Laws 

Henry Woolf 

Henry Woolf has made an enormous 

contribution to the world of fine arts and 

particularly drama throughout Saskatchewan and 

worldwide. He is well known as an actor, director, 

playwright and University 

Professor. He has appeared in 

hundreds of plays, movies and TV 

productions. He has either acted 

or directed in plays in London, 

Paris, New York and particularly 

Saskatoon. His career in the 

theatre has spanned nearly fifty 

years and he is not finished yet. He 

is still very active in the theatre and 

is traveling to London for a spring 

production. 

One of his first major plays that he 

acted in was Rhinocerous with Sir 

Lawrence Olivier and directed by 

Orson Wells in London, England. 

He continued his artistic career in England and 

Continental Europe until the mid 1970s when he 

took up a teaching post at the University of Alberta 

Drama Department. By 1983, Henry Woolf joined 

the Drama Department at the University of 

Saskatchewan and became its head in 1995. In this 

role, he directed over one hundred plays. 

Very soon after his arrival in Saskatoon, Henry Woolf 

became a founding member of The 

Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan 

Festival. The festival has received 

many awards and is a popular 

destination for thousands of local 

and international fans of the arts and 

theatre. In 1994, the University of 

Saskatchewan awarded Henry 

Woolf the “Master Teacher Award.” 

He was and is a popular figure on 

campus and throughout the City of 

Saskatoon. On his retirement from 

the Drama Department in 1997, he 

was awarded the status of 

“Professor Emeritus.” Even though 

he is now retired, he is very involved 

with the festival every summer and 

still finds time to act in or direct a play each summer 

in England. He is a popular speaker at university 

conferences and is a role model for the University of 

Sask-atchewan. He is truly an entertainer who 

continues to bring credit to the University of 

Saskatchewan. 



Donald (Don) John Listwin 

Don Listwin was born and raised in Saskatoon and 

attended Evan Hardy Collegiate. He entered the College 

of Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan in 

September 1976. While at university he played Huskie 

Volleyball in the 1976-80 seasons. When 

on the team the University of Saskatchewan 

Huskies won two Canada West 

titles and a CIAU National Championship 

in 1978/79. He graduated from the 

College of Engineering in 1980 with a B.E. 

in Electrical Engineering and he credits 

Mr. Jerry Huff, a professor in the College 

of Engineering, with introducing him to 

his chosen field. Upon graduation, Mr. 

Listwin joined Develcon Electronics Ltd. 

in Saskatoon, where he led the company’s 

expansion to Silicon Valley in the early 

1980s. 

Throughout his career, Mr. Listwin has 

established a strong track record for 

producing results, driving exponential 

growth and shaping new markets both 

at home and abroad. He also has been 

recognized for aggressively pursuing and securing strategic 

acquisition opportunities. In 1990, after nine years with 

Develcon, he joined Cisco Systems, the worldwide leader in 

networking for the Internet. He held a variety of leadership 

positions during his 10 years at Cisco Systems and was 

eventually promoted to Executive Vice President, reporting 

directly to the CEO. While at Cisco Systems, he led many of 

the company’s leading growth strategies, such as entry into 

IBM Internetworking, the access market, and the telecommunications 

service provider market. He also 

spearheaded Cisco’s strategy to build the company’s “New 

World” communications network, a network based entirely 

on Internet technology. While developing this new business 

strategy, Mr. Listwin invented the concept of the Internet 

ecosystem, a new business model for defining success in 

the Internet economy. 

Currently, Mr. Listwin is President and 

CEO of Openwave Systems, where his 

focus is on developing and growing 

Openwave, the worldwide leader of open 

Internet-based communication infrastructure 

software. Openwave is the 

company formed by the merger between 

Software.com and Phone.com, two 

leading telecommunications software 

companies. Openwave provides the 

software that makes the mobile Internet 

work. Under his leadership, Openwave 

has continued to grow its customer base 

worldwide and build shareholder value. 

Openwave’s Canadian customers include 

Bell Mobility, Nortel Networks, Rogers 

AT&T and Telus. 

His primary philanthropic activity is 

serving as the chairman of the Board of 

Directors for NetAid, an on-going, 

worldwide Internet-based program that empowers 

individuals to help eradicate poverty in developing nations. 

Under his direction, Cisco Systems, along with the United 

Nations Development Programme, founded NetAid 

(www.netaid.org) in 1999. NetAid is not meant simply to be 

a fundraiser, but rather promotes the use of the Web to end 

poverty throughout the world. 

Mr. Listwin also serves on the Board of Directors for 

Openwave, JDS Uniphase, TIBCO, MarketItRight.com and 

Harvard University’s Belfer Center for Science and 

International Affairs. 

Don and his family reside in Los Altos Hills, California. 



Margaret W. Thompson 

Margaret Thompson was born in Cheshire, England, 

and came to Saskatchewan with her family in 1926 

as a six-year-old. After completing teacher training at 

the Saskatoon Normal School and teaching for two years 

in rural schools, she attended the University of 

Saskatchewan, graduating in 1943 with 

an Honours degree in Biology. She 

received a Ph.D. degree in Zoology, 

specializing in Human Genetics, from 

the University of Toronto in 1948. 

After her graduate training, Dr. 

Thompson spent two years in teaching 

positions at the University of Western 

Ontario, and then moved to the 

University of Alberta, where she 

became an Assistant Professor of 

Zoology and a Scientific Associate of 

the University Hospital, Edmonton. In 

1963 she joined the University of 

Toronto and the Hospital for Sick 

Children, where she reached the rank 

of Professor in the Department of 

Medical Genetics and Microbiology and the Department 

of Pediatrics. She is now Professor Emeritus, University 

of Toronto, and Honorary Consultant, Hospital for Sick 

Children. 

Dr. Thompson’s professional career has been devoted to 

human genetics and its relevance to childhood diseases, 

particularly muscular dystrophy. With her late husband 

Dr. James Thompson she co-authored Genetics in 

Medicine, a textbook now in its sixth edition. She is a 

founding member of the Genetics 

Society of Canada, the Canadian 

College of Medical Geneticists and the 

American Society of Human Genetics, 

and is an Honorary Fellow of the 

American Board of Medical Genetics. 

She has received the Presidential 

Award of the Genetics Society of 

Canada and the Founders Award of the 

Canadian College of Medical Geneticists 

and, in 1995, was the first 

recipient of an Award for Excellence in 

Education from the American Society 

of Human Genetics. In 1988 she was 

named a Member of the Order of 

Canada. 

The University of Saskatchewan is 

pleased to honour Dr. Margaret Thompson, one of our 

distinguished graduates. 


Master Teacher Award 

Keith Taylor 

The Master Teacher Award was established to 

emphasize the importance of teaching at the 

University of Saskatchewan and to recognize and honour 

those faculty members who excel in teaching. The 

Selection Committee has named 

Professor Keith Taylor of the Department 

of Mathematics to be the recipient 

of this prestigious award at this 

Convocation. Professor Taylor earned 

his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics 

at St. Francis Xavier University in 1971 

and his Ph.D. at the University of 

Alberta in 1976, joining the Department 

of Mathematics at this university in 

1977. In July, 1987, he was promoted 

to Full Professor. 

Professor Taylor is the finest example 

of what a university professor ought to 

be. He is not content to restrict his 

expertise to the specialties of his 

discipline but is eager to share his love 

of mathematics with all seekers. Students or scholars 

or laymen of any stripe, Professor Taylor meets each at 

just the right level to create a challenge unperturbed by 

discomfort. 

A glance at Professor Taylor’s curriculum vitae confirms 

his achievements as an investigative researcher. Having 

published over 30 papers in refereed journals, he reveals 

his standing among his peers by the many invited 

lectures he has presented all over the world. He has, 

moreover, been appointed or elected to several official 

positions in the Canadian Mathematics Society, 

including Vice-President and Meeting Director. 

But it is as a teacher that Professor Taylor truly excels. 

In his more than twenty years here, Taylor’s Readiness 

Course provided an avenue for incoming 

students to raise their skills to 

their level courses. His sensitivity to 

issues of accessibility led to the 

development of interactive learning 

modules on the World Wide Web, 

accessed thousands of times a day. 

Professor Taylor is also the faculty 

member responsible for the Math Help 

Centre. His able leadership has 

developed the Centre into an attractive 

resource for our students. His 

involvement with enrichment programmes 

in the school system has 

stimulated many young people, and he 

has worked tirelessly to raise the 

profile of mathematics among Native 

communities in the North. Yet, after all this, he modestly 

declares that he is only doing what any professor ought 

to do. 

Professor Keith Taylor has shown himself to be an 

excellent emissary of his discipline, touching everyone 

he encounters with his serene fervour for mathematics. 

With the dedication he has displayed and the legacy he 

is building, the University of Saskatchewan is indeed 

fortunate to have such a fine teacher on its staff. He is 

most deserving of this honour. 


Distinguished Researcher Award 

David Christensen 

The Distinguished Researcher Award recognizes a 

faculty member’s contribution to scholarship through 

the creation, expansion and critique of knowledge. The 

University has selected David Christensen, Professor of 

Animal and Poultry Science, as the 

Spring 2001 recipient of this award. 

Professor Christensen earned a B.S.A 

(1958) at the University of Saskatchewan, 

Master of Science degree (1960) and a 

Ph.D. (1963) at McGill University. In 

1965, he returned to the U of S as an 

Assistant Professor. He has been a 

tenured professor here since 1976, and 

served an 11-year term as Head of the 

Department of Animal and Poultry 

Science. 

Professor Christensen is internationally 

recognized for his work in dairy cow 

nutrition and has had a significant impact 

on Western Canadian agriculture. Early 

in his career, he helped establish the 

Saskatchewan Feed Testing Laboratory. 

This initiative brought scientific nutrition information and 

ration formulation to the farm. 

Professor Christensen was one of the first nutritionists to 

appreciate the extent and economic impact of trace mineral 

deficiencies in cattle in Western Canada. Trace mineral 

supplementation is now widespread, primarily as the result 

of a 10-year research program led by Professor Christensen. 

More recently, he has been active in the development of 

new, high-value feedstuffs based on Saskatchewan 

commodities for use on Canadian farms and for export. 

His research is critical to the development of new export 

markets for Saskatchewan feed products. 

Professor Christensen teaches nutrition and dairy 

management to undergraduate, graduate, vocational and 

veterinary students. Forty-one graduate students have 

completed graduate degrees under his supervision, and he 

currently supervises seven graduate 

students. 

He has published 115 refereed articles 

and presented 46 major invited papers at 

national and international conferences, as 

well as over 200 invited lectures around 

the world. 

Professor Christensen has been involved 

with most of the animal science producer 

groups in Saskatchewan and has served 

on the province’s Advisory Committee on 

Animal Science. He is a Fellow of the 

Agricultural Institute of Canada and has 

received their International Recognition 

Award. 

Among the other awards he has 

received is the J. W. George Ivany 

Internationalization Award, which Professor Christensen 

received for his work in bringing U of S agricultural research 

to the world. He has been active as a lecturer, consultant 

and project manager in over 20 countries in Africa, Central 

America, the Middle East, and Asia. 

Professor Christensen excels in teaching, research, 

technology transfer and extension, industry and community 

development, and international development. He has 

contributed greatly to agriculture not only in Saskatchewan, 

but around the world and has been a highly effective 

international ambassador for the University and the 

province. He is a worthy recipient of this award. 


President’s Service Award 

Grace Milashenko 

In recognition of 33 years of outstanding service to 

students, colleagues and the U of S, Extension Division 

Program Co-ordinator Grace Milashenko is being honoured 

with the President’s Service Award at Spring Convocation 

2001. 

Grace’s nominator and a host of 

nomination supporters attest to what a 

tireless and exceptional leader she has 

been since she began with the University 

in 1968 as a secretary in the Extension 

Division. Her technical and administrative 

talents were apparent to all, and she rose 

within the Division to become secretary 

to the Director, later increasing her 

responsibilities as a program co-ordinator. 

Since 1979 she has co-ordinated 

the Business Administration Certificate 

program (BAC), and upgraded her 

education by completing the 

BAC program herself. Now, as an 

Administrative Co-ordinator, she oversees 

BAC, the Certificate in Adult and 

Continuing Education (CACE), the Certificate in Teaching 

English as a Second Language (CERTESL), the Certificate 

in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), and Independent 

Studies. 

Grace’s colleagues extol her virtues: “Grace Milashenko 

personified what it means to give service ... She has been a 

leader, a part-time student, an advocate for part-time, adult, 

and distance learners, a defender of the disenfranchised, 

and a tireless worker on many boards and committees both 

within the University and outside of it.” 

Her co-workers remark that “students come first” with 

Grace. They also say she has been “a great ambassador to 

the business community”, “a delight to work with”, and 

has “a superior intellect that she demonstrated in all the 

work that fell within her responsibility”. “Grace’s 

professionalism, dedication, and commitment to the 

University of Saskatchewan have led to 

the enhancement of the Extension 

Division programs.” 

Besides her main work in Extension, 

Grace has served the University and the 

community as an active executive 

member and former President of the U 

of S Administrative & Supervisory 

Personnel Association (ASPA), Prairie 

representative and newsletter editor for 

the Canadian Association for Distance 

Education (CADE), national board 

member of the Canadian Association for 

Adult Education, a lay member of the 

Certified General Accountants (CGA) 

provincial board, board member of the 

Canadian Cancer Society, and an active 

volunteer with many other organizations 

such as the Saskatchewan Action Committee for the Status 

of Women, the Saskatoon Community Clinic, Planned 

Parenthood, the Northern Saskatchewan International 

Children’s Festival, and Jeux Canada Games. 

The U of S established the President’s Service Award in 

1995 to recognize exceptional contributions by nonacademic 

staff. It honours individuals who have enhanced 

the work environment by providing extraordinary service 

to the University community, who have inspired, supported 

and respected the endeavors of others, and who have 

achieved this distinction through dedication and 

commitment. 


Governor General’s Academic Medals 

These medals are awarded to the undergraduate student and graduate student with the highest academic standing. 

Jimmy Xavier Makaroff (Silver Medal) 

Jimmy Makaroff graduated from Evan Hardy Collegiate 

in Saskatoon in 1996. He graduated from Evan Hardy 

with Honours with Distinction. Jimmy enrolled in the 

College of Engineering in September 1996 to pursue a 

double degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer 

Science. He is graduating with a Bachelor of Science Fouryear 

Degree with a major in Computer Science with Great 

Distinction and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical 

Engineering with Great Distinction. 

Mr. Makaroff has been the recipient of numerous awards 

during his academic career. In High School he received 

the Saskatoon School Board Proficiency Scholarship in 

Grades 10, 11 and 12. In his graduating year he received 

the Governor General’s Bronze Medal, awards in 

Mathematics, Sciences and Business Education for the 

student receiving the highest grades in these subject areas 

and the Saskatchewan Education General Proficiency 

Award. Jimmy was also awarded a University of 

Saskatchewan Entrance Scholarship. 

His high scholastic record continued at University. He 

was awarded a University of Saskatchewan Undergraduate 

Scholarship three years in a row. As well, he 

received the following: the W.R. (Buck) Staples 

Scholarship, the Amoco Canada Engineering Awards, 

PanCanadian Petroleum Ltd. Scholarship, the Chevron 

Canada Resources Scholarship just to name a few. 

Jimmy Makaroff has accepted a position as Software 

Programmer at SED Systems in Saskatoon and begins 

this position in June. 

Mark Francis Tachie (Gold Medal) 

Mark Francis Tachie was born at Kpando in Ghana. He 

entered the University of Science and Technology in 

1989 following an outstanding secondary school career at 

Bishop Herman Secondary School, and graduated with B.Sc. 

(First Class Honours) in Mechanical Engineering in 1993. 

He entered the University of Saskatchewan in 1996, and 

completed his M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering one year 

later. He successfully defended his Ph.D. in November 2000. 

He is married to Rose-Marie, and they have a one-year old 

son, Sedem. 

In terms of engineering research, Dr. Tachie is keenly 

interested in complex near-wall turbulent flows. As part of 

his M.Sc. program, he implemented a methodology for 

performing concentration measurements in quasi-two 

dimensional shallow turbulent wake flow using digital 

processing of video images of dye patterns. For his Ph.D. 

research, he used a state-of-the-art two-component laser 

Doppler anemometer to obtain comprehensive velocity 

measurements in smooth and rough wall turbulent boundary 

layers and turbulent wall jets. This research is an attempt 

to clarify conflicting opinions in the literature by clearly 

demonstrating that wall roughness in a boundary layer has 

profound effects on the turbulence structure outside the 

roughness sublayer. His Ph.D research is also the first to 

provide a complete rough wall data set for the turbulent 

wall jet. Dr. Tachie has published his research extensively, 

including 12 journal papers (in print or accepted for 

publication) and 7 papers in conference proceedings to date. 

Dr. Tachie was awarded a University of Saskatchewan 

Graduate Scholarship (1997-1999), Natural Sciences and 

Engineering Research Council (NSERC) PSGB Scholarship 

(1999-2000), and NSERC Post-doctoral Fellowship tenable 

for two years. He was also the 1999 recipient of the Clarence 

F. Forsberg Memorial Scholarship. During his graduate 

program, he served as a sessional lecturer in the Department 

of Chemical Engineering in 1998 and in the Department of 

Mechanical Engineering in 2000. As part of his NSERC postdoctoral 

fellowship at the University of Toronto, Dr. Tachie 

is conducting measurements at the interface of porous 

media using particle image velocimetry.

History of the University of Saskatchewan 

The University of Saskatchewan was established by 

the University Act on April 3, 1907, only 18 months 

after Saskatchewan became a province. 

The people of the province, as well as their 

government, were instrumental in shaping the new 

University. The provincial government requested all 

residents who were graduates of a Canadian or British 

university to form the first Convocation and elect the 

University’s Senate. The Senate, in turn, elected five 

members to the first Board of Governors, while the 

province appointed three. In 1908, the Board selected 

Professor Walter Charles Murray, of Dalhousie 

University, as the first President. 

Classes in Arts and Science began in September, 1909, 

in downtown Saskatoon. Construction of the campus 

began in 1910 and the first buildings were occupied 

in the fall of 1912. They included the College Building 

(Administration Building), Saskatchewan Hall (a 

student residence), residences for the Dean of 

Agriculture and the President, a laboratory for 

Engineering, and a number of farm buildings. 

From the beginning, the University established an 

emphasis on research and teaching in a context of 

community service, and encouraged co-operation 

among departments and divisions in tackling common 

problems. The development of rust-resistant strains 

of wheat, for example, initiated by the University and 

federal and provincial research agencies, has been of 

untold value to the prairie economy. 

In 1909, the University had 70 students and 5 

professors, including the President. Today there are 

over 18,000 students studying in 13 colleges and 1 

school. This is the only university in Canada with five 

health-science colleges and a major teaching hospital 

on the same campus. The University offers Spring 

and Summer Session, Evening Courses, Independent 

Studies courses and Distance Education as well as 

on-campus daytime courses. 

The University of Saskatchewan overlooks the South 

Saskatchewan River from a 755 hectare site. The 

campus consists of 147 hectares with the remaining 

being a research park, the University farm and 

experimental plots. 

Most early buildings on campus are Collegiate Gothic 

in style and are constructed in a local dolomite, 

popularly known as greystone. Subsequently 

constructed buildings also have greystone, as well 

as Tyndall stone (pre-cut slabs quarried in Tyndall, 

Manitoba), concrete, brick, glass and aggregate 

facings. 

The University offers many points of interest for 

visitors: the Diefenbaker Canada Centre, Museum of 

Natural Sciences, Museum of Antiquities, Biology 

Museum, Pharmaceutical Museum, the Observatory, 

the Gordon Snelgrove Gallery, the St. Thomas More 

Gallery, Rugby Chapel, the Little Stone Schoolhouse, 

the Memorial Gates, Patterson Garden, and the 

Kenderdine Gallery.
