March 11 – 20, 2017
In Wigan borough
I
t’s time to get out your bonjour, your
c’est la vie and your joie de vivre: the French
Language and Francophonie week is in Wigan
Borough for its first edition!
Every year in March, French language lovers
from all over the world are invited to celebrate
the most romantic Romance language through
thousands of activities and events.
But what is the Francophonie?
Francophonie with a capital ‘F’ refers to the
world community of French speaking countries
represented by the International Organisation
of la Francophonie (IOF).
Francophonie with a lowercase ‘f’ refers to
those speakers who have the French language
in common. According to the IOF, French is the
9 th most widely spoken language on the planet
and the only one, together with English, to be
spoken on all five continents. With 274 million
speakers worldwide, French set to be the most
commonly spoken language by 2050.
T
EDITO
his year, and as part of our twinning
links with Angers (FR), the Twinning Office of
Wigan Council has decided to bring an
avalanche of ‘’Frenchness’’ in the Borough
through a variety of events: cinema, literature,
gastronomy, education, art…
This special event wouldn’t have been the same
without the support of local organisations,
institutions and individuals, who have turned
this week into a particularly delightful French
celebration. So to all, a huge thank you!
Take part in our exciting activities and let’s
make the Francophonie week a recurrent
event in Wigan Borough.
See you all very soon!
Synopsis
François is a young French teacher in a difficult
college. He does not hesitate to confront
Esmeralda, Souleymane, Khoumba and the
others in stimulating verbal jousts, as if the
language itself was a real stake. But learning
about democracy can sometimes involve real
risks.
WIGAN & ANGERS TWINNING
A Twinning? What for?
Wigan has been twinned with Angers for
nearly 30 years. This lasting friendship
began in the late 1970's as a cultural
exchange between two colleges and was made
official in 1988.
The twinning has continued to grow over the
years, and now involves a wide network of
organisations.
• Businesses
• Schools and colleges
• Activity clubs, including sports,
culture and dance
• Music bands and artists
• Community groups.
The Ambassadors
Each year, both cities choose an Ambassador
to work for twelve months at the Twinning
Office of its counterpart city.
Along with representing and promoting their
town, the Ambassadors have the task of
developing projects linking the twin cities
together.
