Letter from the Co-Chairs 

Welcome to Old Bags! As we look forward to this wonderful evening of fabulous handbags and friends, we’d like to 

reflect on our journey this year. In one of the worst economic climates in the history of many of our lives, friends, family members, 

business owners, and even celebrities opened their hearts and closets to donate to our 4 th Annual Old Bags auction to help find 

children forever families. Because of them, many who are here tonight, our auction is a resounding success. For that we are 

grateful! 

We share this success with a committee of dedicated and hardworking women from the St. Louis community; they are the 

ones wearing the pink gerbera daisies. We thank each of them for all their hard work, enthusiasm, and commitment to Old 

Bags and the Coalition. Without them, tonight would not be possible. These women worked for months to put together 

everything you see here tonight. They are truly a blessing and a fantastic group of women whom we now call friends. Speaking of 

friends, we would like to give a special thanks to our fearless leader, Debbie Genung, Director of Development for the Coalition. 

She is not only the face of Old Bags, but one of the hardest working women in foster and adoptive care. Thank you so much, 

Debbie, for all of your guidance and assistance, but most of all for being an inspiration to our group and making us try a little bit 

harder to raise money for this amazing organization! 

We would also like to take a moment to thank the volunteers who are working here tonight. Thank you so much for your 

help. Thanks also to the Zoo and Lake Forest Confections for tying a nice bow around the evening with the wonderful food and 

desserts we will no doubt enjoy. 

Finally, we would like to thank our guests for coming tonight. We hope our hard work has paid off and that you enjoy 

the evening. We tried to collect something for everyone, so please take your time – but not too long as those sections close quickly 

– and find the purchase you’ve been waiting for. We hope you walk away with not only a great buy, but a desire to help us find 

forever families for children!

Another year and more good news to share! The past year has been great for the 

Coalition – our new Extreme Recruitment® program has been featured in the New York 

Times and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and our phones rang with inquiries from “The 

Oprah Show”, “60 Minutes” and Time Magazine. Why the interest? Extreme 

Recruitment® works! We now find homes for children (the hardest-to-place older youth, 

sibling groups and children with emotional, developmental, or physical concerns) in 12- 

20 weeks instead of the 24 months it used to take. 

Extreme Recruitment® has the potential to revolutionize the child welfare system. Foster 

care was designed to provide a safe, temporary place for abused children. Sadly, 

many of our kids are spending entire childhoods in foster care. Extreme Recruitment® is 

changing that. Coalition staff members have already traveled across the country to 

train other child welfare professionals in this new model. Funds raised this evening will 

directly support the Extreme Recruitment® program. 

There are many people to thank: Co-chairs Susan Block and Jackie Olinger and all the 

committee members. These women are so dedicated to improving the lives of foster 

children. Thanks also to all the volunteers who are selling raffle tickets, staffing the 

tables, and working the bank, and the wonderful Zoo staff. Special thanks to our very 

generous sponsors and everyone who donated handbags. When you patronize these 

businesses, please thank them for supporting our kids! 

I hope you enjoy the fourth annual Old Bags Party, visiting with friends, bidding on

THERE ARE 4 SECTIONS IN THE AUCTION: 

Auction Terms & Set-Up 

1. Green Section, the first section to close, is located on the lower level to the left. It will close 

at 7:30PM. 

2. Pink Section, the second section to close, is located on the upper level. It will close at 

8:00PM. 

3. Celebrity Section¸ the third section to close, is a section of handbags autographed by 

celebrities. It will close at 8:15PM. 

4. White Section, the fourth section to close, is located on the lower level to the right. It will 

close at 8:40PM. 

Starting bids are printed on each bid sheet. Bids must start at the minimum bid. 

Bids must be raised by a minimum of $10.00. 

Announcements will be given to alert you of section closings 10, 5 and 2 minutes prior to the 

closing of each section. 

If you have secured the winning bid, you may not remove the auction item until it is released 

by an auction worker. Once the auction worker returns to the table with the winning bid 

number and amount circled and enumerated, the auction worker will checkout the item from 

the table for the winner. The winner must sign the bid sheet acknowledging their bid and 

receipt of the item. Items must either be paid for through Express Pay or with the Bank by 

cash, check or charge, prior to removal of the item from the table. 

BUY-NOW BAGS 

Buy-Now bags are $30.00 each, and are located on the lower level behind the staircase. If you 

see a bag you like, take it immediately for only $30.00! 

MYSTERY BAGS 

Mystery bags are located on the upper level inside the Painted Giraffe. Buy one for only $25.00 

for a chance to win a brand new Kate Spade “Ellie” canvas tote valued at $275.00 which is 

hidden inside one of the bags. Inside select bags are also miscellaneous gift certificates. There

Meet Lewis - 

Coalition Success Stories 

Lewis and his brothers and sisters came into care six years ago. Now 15, he is the last sibling left 

in foster care. He lives in a group home – an institution where his caregivers rotate in shifts. He can’t 

connect with adults because they constantly drop in and out of his life. His case was referred to Extreme 

Recruitment®, and his recruiter, Liz, began the search for supportive family members for 

Lewis…someone he could connect with. Thanks to her efforts, he now visits his siblings and has met an 

aunt and some cousins. Although his aunt couldn’t adopt him, she happily welcomes him to every family 

celebration. He is so excited to be part of a family once again. 

In the spirit of Extreme Recruitment®, at the same time Liz was working with the aunt, she also 

sent Lewis’ information to adoption licensing workers statewide. A couple quickly responded, and Lewis 

will join their family in just a few weeks. After meeting his aunt and family, his new adoptive parents 

said, “Lewis is not entering our family – we are entering his.” 

Meet Michael – 

Michael is 17, and like many boys his age, he is trying to decide what he wants to do when he 

finishes school. Unlike most boys, though, he was facing the prospect of aging out of the foster care 

system with no one to help him as he transitions to adulthood. His Extreme Recruiter, Liz, has been 

working to find family members who can offer their support to Michael. She found his sister, Angela, 

who aged out of foster care 10-years ago. When Liz spoke with her, she was heartbroken thinking of 

Michael facing the lonely future she had faced before she turned 18. “I don’t want my brother to go 

through what I did,” she said. 

When Angela aged out of foster care at 18, she did not have a high school diploma, but she did 

have a will to succeed. She did whatever it took, working different jobs to remain independent. With no 

family or support system, she has struggled to make it on her own. Liz recently helped set up weekly 

visits between Michael and his sister, and Angela can’t wait to adopt Michael. “I want him to celebrate 

his 18th birthday knowing he has a family to count on,” she said. “He won’t have to be alone. I had to 

make my own luck, but I can help him make his.” 

Meet Marshaun and Joseph – 

Marshaun and Joseph, now 12 and 13, have lived in foster care since 2003. Joseph was very sick, 

and their mother was unable to properly care for them. The children were sent to live with different foster 

families, and they lost touch with their biological family. Recently, their cases were referred to the 

Coalition for the Extreme Recruitment® program. While researching, Gayle, the Extreme Recruiter, 

found a family physician who was very involved in their young lives due to Joseph’s medical needs. 

When the Recruiter called, the doctor said, “I recently ran into their Aunt Marcy. She brought Joseph to 

see me so many times, and she really loved those kids. She’s working at a hotel nearby.” The Recruiter 

immediately headed to the hotel and found Aunt Marcy, who was delighted to hear about the children she 

had tried so many times to find over the years. “Those are my babies,” she said. “When can I see them?” 

In a few short weeks, Extreme Recruitment® has reunited Marshaun and Joseph with their aunt, uncle and 

cousins; they will soon be adopted.
