Background<br />
Patients’ lack of adherence to care plans and treatment<br />
regimens is a largely unsolved issue in healthcare<br />
and a major source of poor outcomes and high costs.<br />
Patient engagement is critical to increasing adherence,<br />
improving outcomes, and reducing the cost burden of<br />
poorly-managed care. The MerckEngage Program was<br />
built to address unmet needs in medication adherence,<br />
based on market research with patients, healthcare<br />
providers (HCPs), and caregivers.<br />
Program Details<br />
MerckEngage is a multi-channel behavior change<br />
platform for patients that is designed to help improve<br />
patient engagement, adherence and health outcomes<br />
by providing easy access to information, tools, and<br />
resources for healthier living.<br />
The platform, which was originally launched in 2010<br />
and relaunched in 2015, has the following features:<br />
• Assists patients in making small positive changes<br />
to their health over time by using behavioral<br />
science principles<br />
• Provides disease information so that patients better<br />
understand their conditions<br />
• Enables HCPs to engage their patients in health<br />
management between office visits<br />
• Supports unbranded therapeutic content, as well as<br />
non-therapeutic content in areas such as Caregiving,<br />
Health Insurance, Recipes, Fitness, and Preparing<br />
for Health Care Visits<br />
• Is available in English and Spanish<br />
Value Delivered<br />
• Over 11MM visits to the website to date (since<br />
February 2010)<br />
• More than 60,000 consumers registered with the<br />
program (registration is not required)<br />
• Over 130,000 followers on the associated Facebook<br />
page and over 19,000 followers on the associated<br />
Twitter channel<br />
• Positive user feedback scores about user interface,<br />
as well as comprehensive information and tools<br />
Path Forward<br />
• MerckEngage is continuously updated to ensure<br />
usability and fresh content, based on biweekly<br />
consumer usability testing<br />
• A customizable MerckEngage app will be launching<br />
in Q4 2016<br />
• Merck will continue to analyze data from Merck-<br />
Engage to determine the effect of the program on<br />
medication adherence rates and clinical outcomes<br />
• Offers resources to help caregivers manage their<br />
own health and the health of others in their care<br />
