to see the numerous changes to the tournament
as the mountain resort builds up
to next year’s World Championships.
We are happy to see a steady stream of
news flowing in from the countries with
teams participating in this year’s world
An overview of the Dominican Republic
national team’s preparations for Japan
This will be the fifth time for the current
Pan American Games queens at
the women’s World Championships.
Their best result came in Japan in
1998 when they finished in eleventh
place. Other participations include
Mexico 1974 (21 st ), Moscow 1978
(19 th ) and Germany 2002 (13 th ).
How they qualified
One of six teams from their Continental
Confederation entering the event, the
Dominicans, currently ranked 11 th in the
world), finished second to Cuba in the
NORCECA-E Qualifying Round in Santiago,
Dominican Republic.
Goals
The team’s chances of advancing to the
second round look very realistic this time.
Among their rivals in Pool B, the Dominicans
have consistently dominated Mexico
and have also collected victories over Germany
and Azerbaijan. They last defeated
Germany at last year’s World Grand Prix
and beat the Germans away during the
2001 edition of the Bremen International
Tournament.
An interview with Poland’s
Katarzyna Skowronska
Katarzyna ‘Kasia’ Skowronska is one
of the rising stars of women’s volleyball.
The 22-year-old Pole took part
in a Question and Answer session with
the official website of the FIVB World
Championships Japan 2006:
• What are your general comments
on the Poland team, for example your
strong points and weak points?
K.S.: I can’t tell you all our strong points,
because we need to have some surprises
for the World Championship. For sure
we need to work a lot on defence and
on producing consistent form. The most
important thing is that we are still young
and we create a
real team.
• Sometimes
the Poland
team is excellent,
but the
next day is not
so good. Why
is this?
K.S.: That’s a
mental problem,
and shows why
it is so impor-
Japan’s “golden girls” from the 1976 Montréal
Olympic Games look to the future
The magical memories of Montreal
are still alive in Japan, and have led
to the establishment of a non-profit
organisation to spread the volleyball
gospel. The 12 members of Japan’s
gold medal-winning women’s squad at
the 1976 Olympic Games have teamed
up again to form NPO Volleyball Montreal,
and have been joined by media
representatives and support staff who
were also involved in the epic campaign
Registered with the Tokyo city government
and with office space at the Japan Volleyball
Association headquarters in Sendagaya,
near the National Stadium built for
the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, NPO Volleyball
Montreal will have several aims, according
to team member and chief executive
Yuko Arakida. “The first will be to hold volleyball
clinics and schools for kids, middleschool
students and mama-sans,” says
Yuko, the term ‘mama-sans’ referring to
the hugely popular circuit for mothers and
older players. “The second is to organise
media training for the top athletes, not
only in volleyball, so they can learn how to
handle the media and conduct interviews
with the press and TV. We also plan to give
fiVB World Volley news no.4 June 2006
tant to be consistent. We need to learn
also that we are able to overcome even the
strongest teams like China or Brazil. We
didn’t win against them until now and it’s
still in our heads.
• In Pool A, what will it be like to play
Japan at home in Tokyo? What is the
atmosphere like for Japan’s opponents,
and does the noise intimidate you or
inspire you?
K.S.: It’ nice to play in a gym which is full
of people. Japan’s fans expect a good game
and they appreciate good action no matter
whether it’s from Japan or the other team.
I hope it will be the same atmosphere in
Poland on the World Grand Prix this year.
• You play three Asian teams in Pool
A at the World Championships: Japan,
Korea and Chinese Taipei. How is their
volleyball style different to the European
style?
K.S.: They play really fast volleyball and
they have the best defence of all teams
all over the world. Now I know this style
because of my play in Italy with Miyuki
Takahashi. We need to be very careful
about their excellent counter-attacks. The
players have got really good technical
skills and because of that they are really
precise. In my opinion in Europe we have
the better block.
• What do you expect from Kenya and
Costa Rica?
K.S.: I don’t know these teams at all, but
talks to kids and hopefully give them the
inspiration to succeed in whatever they
choose to do.”
In order to fund their activities, NPO Volleyball
Montreal will be seeking sponsorship
within the volleyball community, and
has already been supplied with an attractive
uniform by Japanese sportswear giant
Mizuno. The group has around 50 members
and plans to expand to include other
volleyball Olympians from Japan’s glorious
past.
Volleyball
I think that at the World Championships
there are no weak teams. We will not disregard
them for sure.
• How high do you think Poland can finish
in the World Championships?
K.S.: I dream about a medal. We are able
to do this. I really believe this…
• You are only 22 years old. What is
your goal in life, both in volleyball and
away from volleyball?
K.S.: Carpe diem…catch your every day
like it would be the last…
• Describe your shoulder tattoo, and
why you have it?
K.S.: It’s a dragon which I put on on my
18 th birthday… he’s strong - that’s the
reason.
• The Japanese fans like your play and
your character. What do you like about
Japan as a country from your visits
here?
K.S.: I like Japan because it’s modern,
huge and powerful. The country has a specific
character and specific culture. When
I’m thinking about Japan I can see a lot of
colors.
• Will you continue to play in Italy for
Minetti Infoplus Vicenza, or will you
play in Japan’s V League in the future?
K.S.: I don’t know yet what I will be doing
in the future. To play in Japan it’s a big
adventure, but I like adventures. I think
I would like to play there some day… we
will see what life brings.
Nine of the 12 ‘golden girls’ from Montreal
attended the press conference, among
them captain Takako Iida, who becomes
the first president, and Echiko Maeda and
Takako Shirai, the two vice presidents.
The nine other members are Mariko
Okamoto, Noriko Matsuda, Kiyomi Kato,
Yuko Arakida, Katsuko Kanesaka, Hiromi
Yano, Shoko Takayanagi, Mariko Yoshida
and Juri Yokoyama. With the players living
in various parts of Japan, for example
Hokkaido in the north and Kyushu in the
south, NPO Volleyball Montreal will be
able to reach deep into the community.
The seeds for the new venture were sown
eight years ago, when the 12 players were
invited to a reunion at the FIVB
World Championships in Japan
on November 3, 1998. After that
they agreed to meet socially every
two years on the same date, and
two years ago decided to take the
movement one step further and
give something back to society.
Japan’s ‘Class of 76’ at the Montreal
Olympics is regarded as
one of the strongest teams of all
time. They demolished Hungary,
Peru and Canada in Group A, all
in straight sets, before beating
Korea in the semi-finals and the
Soviet Union in the final, again
without dropping a set.

Brazilians claim top spot in Modena to start
the 2006 SWATCH FIVB World Tour
For the start of this 15 th season on the
women’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour
Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larrisa
Franca of Brazil validated their 2005
points championship by defeating
reigning Olympic and World champions
Misty May-Treanor and Kerri
Walsh of the United States for the gold
medal at the USD 200,000 Play Station
Portable Italian Open on the Foro
Boario centre court.
Played on a picture-perfect day with an
over-flowing crowd of 3.500 with a sprinkling
of Brazilian supporters, the second-seeded
Juliana and Larissa scored a
21-19 and 27-25 win in 55 minutes over
the top-seeded May-Treanor and Walsh to
share the USD 32,000 first-place prize in
the season opening event on the 15-stop
women’s international tour.
It was the second win in the last three
meetings for the young Brazilians over
May-Treanor and Walsh. The two teams
split a pair of title matches in Mexico and
South Africa as both tandems each won
six SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medals
in 2005. Overall, the Americans have
won six of the eight meetings, including a
victory in the finals at the 2005 SWATCH
FIVB World Championships last June in
Berlin.
22-year old Juliana said: “We have been
working hard to beat Misty and Kerri and
make ourselves the top team in the world
entering the Beijing Olympic Games in
2008. They are such a talented team, but
we made the plays to win the match today.
We are almost perfect this season, but we
still have a lot of room for improvement.”
Larissa added the SWATCH most outstanding
player trophy to her gold medal
and assorted gifts from the Italian pro-
moter. “The Americans are considered
the best, but we were better today. Except
for a slow start, we played extremely well.
This was a perfect place to launch our
season as the Italians were great hosts,”
the 24-year old Larissa added. “We look
forward to coming back since Italy has
been a great place to play for us.”
The win was the second Italian title for
Juliana and Larissa as the pair captured
the Play Station Portable Italian Open in
June 2005 in Milan where they defeated
Vasso Karadassiou and Vassiliki Arvaniti of
Greece in the final. The Greeks eventually
won the 2005 European Championships
May-Treanor and Walsh, who defeated
the Brazilians in the 2005 SWATCH FIVB
World Tour season final in Cape Town
after losing a three-setter in Acapulco a
month earlier, split USD 22,000 for the silver
medal finish. The Americans are now
21-8 in SWATCH finals with Juliana and
Larissa are 8-7.
The Americans jumped to a 10-6 edge in
the first set before Juliana and Larissa
tied the match at 17-17 and 18-18 before
scoring three of the last four points. In the
second set, the Brazilians raced to 6-2, 7-
3, 8-4, 11-7, 12-8 and 14-10 leads before
May-Treanor and Walsh tied the match at
16-16 on an interference call on Juliana
after a long rally. The Americans served
once for set point at 21-20, but Juliana and
Larissa were able to regain the advantage
at 22-21 and were able to overcome a dig
by May-Treanor to put away the second
set.
President Dr. Amr Elwani’s whistle-stop tour
of the CAVB zones
On his brief tour of the continent
in April to visit the
different zones of the continent,
CAVB President Dr.
Amr Elwani focused on preparations
for the FIVB World Congress in October
as well as future competitions and
development in the different zones.
The first meeting headed by Dr. Elwani
was held with Mr. Emad Eldine Osman
from Sudan, President of CAVB Zone V
and was attended by five countries.
Mr. Osman suggested holding a zonal competition
in December 2006. “We hope to
have annual competitions for the nearby
countries of the zone which will decrease
the travel costs for many countries and
offer a good opportunity for international
experience for our teams” said Mr. Emad.
Kenya Volleyball President, Mr. Waithaka
Kioni, put forward a request to organize
a zonal competition for Juniors as well
as the proposed Four Nations Women’s
competition in July, which will be a good
opportunity for the African countries representing
the continent at this year’s World
Championships in Japan. Egypt, Kenya
and Cameroon will prepare for the big
event with Nigeria, another strong team.
Eritrea Volleyball Federation President, Mr.
Tecle Ghirmai, showed that his Federation
is willing to participate at international
level and had already demonstrated their
progress during the World Championship
Qualifications in Sudan for men and in
Kenya for women last year.
Djibouti Volleyball Federation President,
Mr. Elias Abdalla, stressed that his country
fiVB World Volley news no.4 June 2006
needs to participate in many more courses
to graduate more coaches and referees
who can help to develop Volleyball in the
country.
In the presence of representatives from
twelve countries, African Zones II and III
held a fruitful meeting in Cotonou, Benin,
headed by Elwani and attended by Benin
National Director of Sport Mr. Christopher
Houndevi and Secretary of Sports and Culture
Mr. Lougbenon.
The meeting discussed the Volleyball
development plans in the western area of
Africa in both technical and management
aspects with representatives from Benin,
Congo RD, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, Gambia,
Guinea, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal,
Sierra Leone and Togo.
The meeting also agreed to implement the
CAVB proposal for the first African Beach
Volleyball competition at club level and to
increase the material support to the countries
of this region.
At a press conference upon his arrival in
Benin, held at the VIP lounge in Benin
international airport, Dr. Amr Elwani
declared that he had a lot of programmes
to develop Volleyball in the Western part of
the continent with the great support of the
world Volleyball governing body FIVB and
its president Dr. Rubén Acosta.
“I’m coming here to implement our development
plans all over the continent and
we chose Benin after their great success
in hosting the last years Men’s African
Clubs Champions Championship”, said Dr.
Elwani in an interview for Golfe TV in
Benin. “I’m very proud of my visit to Benin
Botswana 27- 31 July 2005, where Botswana
won both categories as well as the
with participation of 11 clubs.
“We want to activate Volleyball in our
zone using the great push from both
FIVB and CAVB” said zone President, Mr.
S.D. Mosweu (Botswana). “We want to
go forwards through the efforts of the
National Federations of the zone and
also through asking CAVB to assist in the
technical aspects to ensure a good future”,
he added.

Jim Coleman Award as an
honor to the most outstanding
coach of the NORCECA’s
Men’s Continental Championships.
The Executive Committee and Board of
Administration of NORCECA unanimously
approved the proposal made by Mr. Doug
Beal, CEO of USA Volleyball and member
of both bodies of the North, Central
American and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation
of which Mr. Coleman was a
co-founder.
The award, in the form of a trophy, will be
presented every two years at the conclusion
of the men’s most important continental
tournament within NORCECA.
Mr. Coleman was a symbol of American
Volleyball particularly at the international
CEV Executive Committee
meeting in Istanbul
In its meeting in Istanbul
(TUR) on Saturday 22 nd
April 2006, the CEV Executive
Committee evaluated
the organisation of the European Cups’
season 2005/06 and prepared the new
arrangements for the coming season,
including:
• The introduction of a new ranking
system valid for 2007/08
• A test year 2006/07 with 24 men’s
teams and 16 women’s team participating
in the Indesit European Champions’
League
• The preparation for the Drawing of
Lots and following seminar from 23 rd
to 24 th June 2006 in Vienna (AUT).
It was also decided to present a ‘Fair Play’
award during the European Volleyball
Gala in Vienna (AUT), where Europe’s
best players will also be honoured. This
year’s ‘Fair Play’ prize will be awarded
to Marcus Nilsson from Paris Volley. The
23-year-old Swede supported the second
referee in the men’s CEV Cup semi-final
against the later champion Lube Macerata,
admitting to have touched the net during
a critical score at the end of the third
set, which finally decided the match in the
opponent’s favour.
In Beach Volleyball, a new ranking system
has been approved by the CEV Executive
Committee which will be valid from this
season onwards.
The new CEV ranking system will also
take into account the points gathered
during international FIVB events, so that
some top European players will also have
the opportunity to qualify for and compete
in European events.
