Oral Assessment<br />
Directions: This test targets those students who have developing verbal skills—both oral<br />
and written. Ask the questions below and have students record their answers, or record<br />
the answers they supply.<br />
Preparation: Base-ten blocks, at least 50 ones cubes, and counters are needed for<br />
this assessment. For questions 1–5, write the following addition facts on the board or on<br />
index cards, one fact to a card.<br />
5 + 5 = 10 6 + 4 = 10 4 + 6 = 10 8 + 2 = 10.<br />
1. Have students use ones cubes and base-ten blocks to represent each of the<br />
addition facts. Have students keep the models for use in questions 2–5.<br />
2. Using the model addition facts, have students identify the addition fact that<br />
contains doubles.<br />
3. Ask, Which two addition facts have the same addends? What do these<br />
addition facts show?<br />
4. Ask, Which addition fact can help you find the sum of 5 + 6? How does<br />
it help?<br />
5. Ask, Which addition fact can help you find the sum of 8 + 7 + 2? How does<br />
it help?<br />
6. Have students use a number line to show how to find 8 + 4 by counting on.<br />
7. Ask students to model and then to solve the following problem.<br />
Karl picks one basket of apples. His brother Earl picks four baskets. Their<br />
oldest brother, Frank, picks eight baskets. How many baskets of apples did<br />
the brothers pick in all?<br />
