Arts and culture-seekers will find a
wealth of art galleries, theatre, music,
festivals and literature in a wide range
of genres.
The town prides itself on its thriving
creative scene, with potters, jewellers
and glassmakers working alongside
clothing designers, sculptors and
specialist food and drink producers.
Lyme Regis has always had a
fascination for artists, writers and
dramatists, a lure which has drawn
creative people here for centuries.
The town’s spectacular scenery has
inspired many famous artists and
authors to create some of their
most renowned works, including
JRR Tolkien, Jane Austen, and James
McNeill Whistler. Lyme resident John
Fowles wrote ‘The French Lieutenant’s
Woman’, which was adapted for film
in 1982 featuring the classic scene of
Meryl Streep on the Cobb.
Today, the town has a buzzing arts
community and regular art exhibitions
are held at the Town Mill and the
museum. During ArtsFest, artists
open the doors to their studios for the
public to wander in.
The Marine Theatre offers a wide
variety of performances, including
contemporary music, opera, children’s
entertainment and lectures.
