CHENEYS RESTAURANT OPEN TO ALL THE COMMUNITY!
As a parent it is often frustrating
to find most cafes and restaurants
in accessible or unsuitable for
youngsters. However, Cheney’s
restaurant and community café
based in Seaford is bucking that
trend. Opened in May 2016
within Cheney’s Lodge retirement
apartments, the restaurant
has been quietly building its
reputation as a hidden gem.
Owned by Sussex Housing &
Care, a not for profit housing
association for older people in
Sussex, Cheneys boasts fresh,
modern décor and a relaxed yet
welcoming atmosphere. The
restaurant was opened with the
aim to not only offer a catering
service to residents, but to also
connect the older community
with the wider public. Community
spaces such as Cheneys, present
opportunities for a variety of
social groups to interact and
engage with each other.
Cheneys offers many child
friendly facilities including
the availability of high chairs,
accessible toilets and a spacious
dining environment with no
tricky steps to manoeuvre with
heavy buggies! The restaurant
also benefits from a beautifully
secluded courtyard for sitting
out in the summer months.
Open Tuesday – Friday 8.30am –
Cheneys offers a wide selection
of premium London hotel
restaurants, regularly bakes
mouth-wateringly delicious cakes
at only £3 a slice to enjoy with
your tea or coffee. Roast dinners
with all the trimmings are served
weekly on Wednesdays and
Ask Alison...
Alison Waterhouse has worked with children with Additional Educational Needs for the past
22 years in both mainstream and the private sector. Initially, she trained as a Special Needs
Teacher and has worked in a variety of schools and educational settings. Alison now works as
an Independent Educational Consultant for Special Educational Needs and Emotional Well
being in both the Independent sector and mainstream. She is involved in staff training for Young
Minds and Releasing Potential and she has an Educational Psychotherapy practice.
For more information, please visit www.alisonwaterhouse.co.uk.
In her regular “question and answer” page, Alison uses her experience to help readers & their
children with educational concerns or problems. If there’s something you’d like to ask Alison,
email your question to : alison@familybuzz.co.uk
Over the past year I have had numerous phone calls,
emails and conversations with teachers, parents and
grandparents worried about children and young people
all wanting to help them in whichever way they could.
During these conversations I have often recommended
books to share with children as a way into conversations
and exploring the difficulties that they face. In my work
as an Educational Psychotherapist and Consultant for
SEN and Wellbeing I often use books when working with
both children and parents and so this article is going to
concentrate on those books and ways of using them.
As children and young people grow and develop they
meet a range of obstacles and dilemmas along the way.
These are important for them to explore and overcome.
With every obstacle and dilemma comes an opportunity
for learning and growth. If as adults we do the work
for our children we steal their learning opportunity and
prevent them from growing. They need our help not for
us to do the work for them!
One of the biggest areas I get asked for guidance
in is the area of anger and how to support children
who seem to have no ability to manage this. We all
experience this emotion – some far stronger than
others but it is a natural emotion and one that can be
helpful in creating great change as it comes with an
amazing amount of energy. One of the best books to
share with young children is the Red Beast by K.I. Al-
Ghani and Haitham Al-Ghani. This is a wonderful book
that talks about the ‘beast’ inside us all. It explains
that some of us have a light sleeping beast and others
a deep sleeper. Thus they wake up due to different
things. It shares how to quieten the beast but best
of all it starts the conversation about how the child
feels. Where does its beast sleep? For some children it
is in their hands – hence fist clenching, for others it is
in their feet – hence the need to run for others it is in
their heads – hence the real explosions. Once you have
established that we all have a beast and where their
lives you can then start to explore what wakes their
beast and how to calm it. This allows for you to share
ways and talk to others in the family about how they
calm their beast. This can then lead onto some great
art work or play together when you can try out your
strategies and see what works and how it feels, what
helps them and what makes things worse.
A book for older children 10+ is Starving the Anger
Gremlin by Kate Collins-Donnelly. This focuses on
strategies to work through in learning to manage the
gremlin. It is based on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
and again allows adults and children to work together
to understand what is going on for the young person,
how this feels, their thoughts and feelings and then
develop ways of working on this together.
Worries and managing anxiety are a real challenge for
some children and young people. Anxiety can affect
every part of their lives and be quite debilitating for
both the children and young people and their families.
Anxiety is a natural emotion and one that our bodies
need to survive and keep us safe. For some children
and young people it is as if their anxiety setting is set
too low and small things that they should be able to
manage and tolerate become overwhelming. There are
some brilliant books to support children with talking
and learning to manage their anxieties.
One book I often use is called Scaredy Squirrel by
Melanie Watt. In this wonderful picture book you meet
Squirrel who is so frightened he can not go out of
his tree. It shows you his thought patterns and his
fears many of which are completely unlikely. Sharing
this book allows both the children and the adults to
talk about things that they are scared of and then the
conversation can look at how silly some of these things
are. Green Martians and Sharks are highly unlikely in
the squirrels woodland habitat!! By sharing the book
you are showing children that you take their thoughts
feelings and emotions seriously and that together
you can work on helping them learn to manage –
allowing them to grow and learn to manage a variety
of difficulties that they will have to face in life.
Another great book is The Huge bag of Worries by
Virginia Ironside and Frank Rodgers. This is a lovely
story about a little girls worries that take over her life.
After sharing the book with children you can then create
your own worry monsters and write and draw on them.
This allows children to put them in a box in the adults
safe keeping – the message being that we as adults will
help them manage the difficult things in life and will
endeavour to keep them safe. Once the worries have
learnt to be managed or have been overcome then the
monsters can be destroyed. I had one little boy I worked
with who loved this way of managing things and when
he had overcome his fears or worries he wanted to burn
his monsters so all that was left was a puff of smoke.
(I helped him do this so that he was well supervised)
The message became a really powerful one for him.
A lovely book for children 7+ is Frankie's Foibles by Kath
Grimshaw. This book shares the story of Frankie and
how he is able to overcome his Foibles (pesky worries
6
get buzzing online at www.familybuzz.co.uk

that are whispered in his ear) It is a lovely way to
help children understand that their self talk can
be really positive or really unhelpful and allows
them to start to chose which they want to hear.
For older young people a really good book is
Starving the Anxiety Gremlin by Kate Collins-
Donnelly this is a Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
book which allows you to work with a young
person to understand what they are going
through and help them start to manage their
fears and anxieties.
Another area that I get asked about a lot is when
a child experiences the loss of someone within
the family. There are a range of books that help
both adults and children talk about the death
and grief of a loved one. One of my favourites
is Badgers parting Gift by Susan Varley. This is
a book about a badger that dies and as all the
animals get together they are able to think and
share the gifts and memories that he left them.
It is a lovely book to share with children and
enables both children and adults to share their
stories about the person they have lost together.
It becomes a celebration of the person who has
died as well as a starting point in being able to
talk about them.
Another lovely book is A Sky of Diamonds
by Camille Gibbs. This is a book about a little
girl who loses her Mum and is supported by
her father to manage the different stages of
grief from disbelief to sadness and then finally
to reconciliation about the loss. She and her
father learn to cope with their loss using a range
of ways, this is a helpful book when wanting
to support children to cope and explore ways
that they can share their anger or sadness with
another.
Two further books that support families manage
the loss of a loved one are: Farewell, Grandpa
Elephant by Isabel Abedi and Aarvy Aardvark
Finds Hope by Donna R. O'Toole. Both books
support the sharing of the experience and
enable adults and children to talk and share
their feelings and thoughts.
The last book I have to share is How full is your
bucket by Tom Rath and Mary Reckmeyer. This is
a lovely book which looks at how our behaviour
can not only affect how we feel but how other
people feel as well. This is a wonderful book to
share with children and to start the exploration
about how we affect each other each and every
day. Children love the metaphor of the bucket
and this can lead to some really fantastic
conversations with children about not only their
behaviour but the behaviour of others.
The sharing of books and stories with a child,
young person or even another adult is a
wonderful joy and one that leads to amazing
conversations, explorations and sharing. It has
the power to inspire, energise, develop curiosity
and to heal.
What is Educational Psychotherapy?
For parents whose children are struggling at school,
stuck in their learning, anxious or depressed, who
have stopped thriving or are acting out, life can
become overwhelming, full of worry and confusion
as they try to find help for their children. Educational
Psychotherapy is a powerful approach to addressing
these issues. It is a way of meeting the child’s
individual learning needs, which in turn positively
affects their ability to cope within the classroom.
Educational Psychotherapy is a way of working with
children which combines teaching with therapeutic
exploration of the emotional factors triggered by
learning. It is recommended for children and young
people who have become ‘stuck’ due to complex
emotional barriers to learning and development.
Barriers to learning and development may manifest
themselves as:
• Poor attitudes to learning based on attachment
patterns,
• Failure to learn,
• Withdrawal,
• Difficult behaviour,
• Difficulty with social interactions and friendships,
• Violence or aggressive outbursts,
• Physical symptoms,
• Anxiety,
• Difficulties with transitions,
• Restlessness and an inability to focus,
• An inability to make good use of the learning
environment or the teacher.
Educational Psychotherapy produces real benefits
in children’s emotional well being and their
capacity to learn and engage with schools. By
helping children and young people overcome these
emotional barriers to learning, their self esteem,
resilience and skills for learning are strengthened
and engagement, positive relationships and sense
of well being are promoted.
Childcare
Choosing the right childcare provider for your child can be a
daunting task for parents, so to help out parents taking this
step for the first time, here are some tips and hints:
It's always a good idea to visit several child care providers, at
each one, look for:
• Trained and experienced staff, they should be ready to
learn and respond to the individual needs of your child.
• Children who seem happy and purposeful, busy and
engaged but comfortable in their surroundings.
• Safe and clean premises that offer a warm welcome.
• Planned and organised activities
While visiting a child care provider you should ask questions
to make sure you're making an informed choice. Questions
to consider are:
• What qualifications do the staff have?
• What is the ratio of staff to children and how many
children attend each day?
• Are food and nappies provided for the children?
• How is the children's behaviour managed, is there a
policy for discipline?
• Does each child have a key worker (one member
of staff who has main responsibility for each child)?
As well as asking questions of the child care provider, it's
also worth talking to other parents. They will have first hand
experience of using the services on offer and will be able to
offer first hand experience of what you can expect.
Before, during and after choosing a child care provider,
communication is key. Being able to comfortably discuss your
child's care with the caregivers is imperative, even more so in
the time before your child learns to speak for him/herself.
Hopefully these suggestions, along with checking the child
care provider's Ofsted report at www.ofsted.gov.uk, will help
you find the right place for your child to thrive!
Active Kids
Anyone who’s tried to keep up with a young
child will know that most are naturally physically
active and love to be on the go. What’s not always
obvious though is that encouraging your child
to be active on a regular basis can benefit their
health for their whole life. You’re never too young
to learn to love exercise and active children are
more likely to grow into active adults.
Regular exercise will help your child develop
strong muscles and bones, help them sleep and
make them more alert. The NHS recommend that
children between 5 & 18 have at least 1 hour of
exercise per day, though even gentle exercise
such as walking to school counts towards this.
As children grow it can be a challenge to give
them enough daily activity and some older
children can be reluctant to remain active. It’s
important to find activities they enjoy, as having
fun is the best motivation of all.
NIGHT TO REMEMBER RETURNS WITH NEW URBAN TREK
Registration has opened for Chestnut Tree’s eighth
annual Night to Remember midnight walk, with a
new 15-mile Urban Trek added to the choice of
walks.
Chestnut Mum Zoe, whose 7 year old son Connor
was cared for by Chestnut Tree until he passed
away at the hospice in 2006, has spoken out to
persuade others to take part. “The walk takes place
around the anniversary of us losing Connor so it
feels nice to do something enjoyable and which
makes such a difference to Chestnut Tree. There
is always a brilliant atmosphere on the night, with
the marshals spurring everyone on to the finish
line.”
“I really would encourage everyone to take part,
whether it’s the 5, 10 or 15 miles” says Zoe. “Every
mile walked and every pound raised in sponsorship
gives more families like ours the chance to make
memories and spend their final days with their
child supported by Chestnut Tree House.”
Registration for this ladies-only event is open now
at cth.nighttoremember.org.uk, with an early-bird
discounted entry fee of £15 for the first 500 ladies
to sign up online.
