Peter Cottontail and tons of fun activities for all ages! Egg

will be Saturday, April 29 th . You won’t have
to haul your items far; it will take place in
YOUR OWN garage! Just be ready to open
your garage at 7 AM.
We’ll be creating a map of all the garage sales in the community. To be
added to the map, please email your address to mevrard@canyongate.
com and include a short list (five words or less) of the types of items you
are selling. No additions will be accepted after Wednesday, April 26 th .
The maps will be handed out at the onsite offices the day of the event.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, also called RodeoHouston or
abbreviated HLSR, is one of the largest live entertainment and livestock
exhibitions. It also includes one of the richest regular-season rodeo events.
It has been held at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, since 2003. It was previously
held in the Astrodome. It is considered to be the city’s “signature
event,” much like New Orleans’s Mardi Gras, Dallas’s Texas State Fair, San
Diego’s Comic-Con and New York City’s New Year’s Eve at Times Square.

RULES OF THE ROAD FOR WESTHEIMER LAKES AND
WESTHEIMER LAKES NORTH
This is a reminder... The operation of motorized vehicles (ATV’s, dirt
bikes, golf carts, etc.) other than mowing equipment on pathways or
trails maintained by the Association or any other Common Area within
the community is not allowed.
According to the Texas department of public safety:
• ATV’s are not allowed on a street and an operator crossing a street must
have a valid driver’s license.
• Golf carts are not allowed to be operated on any roadways, sidewalks
or common areas. This includes the Rec Center, SplashPad, lake areas
and playgrounds.
• Mopeds and motor assisted scooters are treated as regular bicycles.
All vehicles used on roads must obey traffic laws including stop signs
and speed limits. For additional information on this subject, go to www.

DID YOU KNOW… ATV’s and Golf Carts on common areas of the community
require your money to repair these areas when damaged.

HOW TO REPORT VANDALISM
Dear Residents:
We received information about recent actions of vandalism in the community
and we encourage all the residents to make sure that all garage
doors as well as vehicles are locked.
Also, all the residents within the community have the opportunity to
contact our Patrol Service Company, SEAL Security Solutions, to its 24/7
dedicated hotline for the residents at Westheimer Lakes in order to report
any suspicious activity. The hotline can be reached at 832-956-1956.

If you would like to use the Gazebo and/or Veranda area, you may rope it
off by providing your own ropes, but you cannot close off any common
area used for entrance/exit to building or fitness center (or back pool
gate during pool season).

Furniture cannot be moved without approval from the Board of Directors
prior to the rental date.
No tape, ticky tack, pushpins, staples, etc. or confetti may
be used in decorating.
All trash must be cleaned up and taken home by resident.

cleaning materials needed
(including but not limited to broom, mop, vacuum cleaner,
trash bags, etc.)
Occupancy Limit is no more than 60 persons, including the Resident.

A contract must be entered into between S.E.A.L. Security Solutions, LLC
and the responsible renting party. One courtesy officer will be required
for a minimum of 4 hours at $32/hr. + tax. Resident must contact S.E.A.L.

for the event 2 weeks in advance. Payment will need to be collected no
later than 7 days prior to the event.
All persons must vacate the Facility no later than 11:45 PM.
Please allow a minimum of one week prior to event for approval of

BOARD APPROVED COMMITTEES AND DESCRIPTIONS
SOCIAL COMMITTEE
Assist the community in creating, implementing and supporting
events and activities. These events include, “Egg”stravaganza, Cookies
with Santa and more!
LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE
The primary role is to support a social club for landscaping ideas,
also known as the Garden Club. They are responsible for inviting
horticulture guest speakers for community events and sharing a
general interest in landscaping. They also assist with the Holiday
Decoration Yard Contest.
COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE
To assist the community in creating, implementing and supporting
communication efforts including the newsletter, intranet and section
leaders and block captains. They also assist with the Holiday
Decoration Yard Contest.
TRAFFIC/SAFETY COMMITTEE
Assists with safety and awareness within the community, making
recommendations to the Board for placement of stop signs and
speed humps.
ADOPT A SCHOOL COMMITTEE
Provides recommendations to the Board of Directors for the donation
of AAS funds to the schools within that community for educational
school items, such as computers, library books, etc. These funds also
may be allotted for enhancements within the community such as
sidewalks, playground areas or other improvements that will benefit
the students of the community.

it clean. Some need to be reminded.

habits. Keeping your neighborhood
clean is a habit that takes
conscious effort.
GOLF BALLS
Hitting golf balls is meant for the
golf course only. It can cause damage
not only to personal property
but to people as well. Please respect
your neighbors and refrain
from hitting golf balls inside the
community.
NO TRESPASSING ON
RESIDENTS PRIVATE
PROPERTY
There have been complaints about
children crossing through residents’
private yards to get to the
facilities. Please let children know
that they cannot cross private
property. If this should occur more
than once, we ask homeowners’
to contact the proper authorities.
BASKETBALL GOALS
Basketball is a fun sport that many
like to play. As a reminder, please
make sure that all basketball goals
are kept in an upright position in
your driveway. Basketball goals
should not be left in the street at
anytime or left on the side of your
home when not in use. Leaving
Basketball goals in the street can
be a nuisance to drivers in the
community and a hazard should
there be a need for an emergency
vehicle to gain access to your
street. Please note this is also a
violation of deed restrictions and
if you receive violation letters regarding
this matter you could be
sent to the attorney and be liable
for those charges.
UNWANTED SOLICITORS
NO SOLICITING signs are posted
throughout the entrances of the
community. If this continues to
be a growing issue at your residence
and would like to place a
NO SOLICITING sign in your yard,
you may certainly do so. Please be
sure that the sign is placed by your
front door and place only (1) sign
at your home.
If you feel in danger and think the
solicitor will be in the community
long enough to call the authorities,
we suggest you call the local
Police Department.
KEEP OUR LAKES CLEAN
Please help us keep our community
beautiful by NOT THROWING
trash and debris around or into
the lakes. In addition, there is NO
SWIMMING, BOATING OR FISHING
in the LAKES.
NO DUMPING IN EMPTY LOTS
Please help us keep our community
clean by NOT DUMPING trash
and debris onto empty lots. Neighbors
please report violators and
be ready to provide license plate
number and photo or any other
pertinent information.

Please be patient when approaching the EZ
Tag barrier arm and obey the signs. After
stopping at the stop sign, proceed slowly and
wait until the barrier arm opens fully. Bumping
or hitting the barrier arm causes costly
and unnecesary repairs to the Association.
If there is a car in front of you, please remain
at the stop sign until the car has gone through
the arm and the arm is closed. The barrier
arm closes after each vehicle every time.

The Canyon Springs and Canyon Falls Gates
EZ Tag Entry lanes are for registered resident
entry only via electronic EZ Tags (Harris
County EZ TAG or Community fast pass tags
for community use only). Electronic entry
tags, including credit card size Access Cards
and telephone home number registration
services are available to all Canyon Springs
and Canyon Falls residents at the SplashPad
office Tuesday through Saturday. Call 832-
222-2355 for more details.
The entry will remain open during the day
while sales and construction of new homes
are in operation and gates will close at night.
The gated areas may be accessed three (3)
ways; with EZ Tag or fast pass tags, Access
Card (reader is located at the dial up box in
the left lane) or you may dial the home code
on the telephone 10 key pad. If someone is
home to answer, access may then be granted.
If you experience difficulty, the gate attendant’s
office may be called by pressing #0001
on the 10 keypad.
In the event the gates do not open, please
call the gate attendant and they can open
the gate during the evening hours of 7:30
PM until 5 AM. Report all gate malfunctions
to either 832-222-2650 or at 832-222-2355, if
no one is available, please leave a message
with your name, phone number and a brief
description of the situation. The gate repairs
will be called into the gate service company.

GENERAL VIOLATIONS
1 st letter: Notifying owner of violation and
giving them (30 days) to cease and desist.
(Legally no further letters can go out for this
violation until the (30 days) has expired.)
2 nd letter: After the (30 days) has expired from
the 1 st letter a 2 nd letter notifying the owner
of violation will be sent. (Please note that
depending on what the violation is the board
can send the account to the attorney when
the (30 days) has expired from this letter.)
3 rd letter: This letter is optional to the board
and depending on what the violation is they
do not always feel the need to send a 3 rd letter.

ADOPT-A-SCHOOL
Westheimer Lakes P.O.A. presented Adopt-A-School Program donations
to Foster High School. The Lamar CISD school received a check
for $5,000 to the Robotics Club, an investment in the future of our
students.
Fostering support for our community’s children through local programs
and activities is the goal of the Adopt-A-School Fund. The
Fund is established through contributions from homeowners, the
developer and builders in the Westheimer Lakes Community at the
time of closing and continues to be fed through subsequent home
sales and purchases in the community.
Funding requests for this program are submitted to and reviewed by
the board for approval. Suggestions for donations to programs and
activities benefiting the children of Westheimer Lakes should be submitted
to First Service Residential at contactus.tx@fsresidential.com.

process ensures that all residents
have access to the amenities such
as the pool, automobile stickers
and EZ Tag enrollment (no cost
with a Harris County EZ Tag) for
entry into the EZ Tag lanes at the
gated sections. Some electronic
tag fees are applicable. Your proof
of resident ownership will be
needed to properly complete your

ANIMAL / PET CONTROL
Please respect your neighbors’ yards and their personal space…
remember that pets must be confined to a fenced backyard or within
the house and must not be allowed to bark all night long or cause
a nuisance to neighbors. They must be on a leash at all times when
away from this contained environment. It is also the pet owner’s
responsibility, when walking their pet within the subdivision, to
keep ALL areas free of pet debris. Please remember that cats must
also be confined.

SCOOPAGE PET POOPAGE
It may not be a fabulous way to walk, but please have courtesy to
please scoop when your pet poops during your walks. Throughout
the community trails, you will find areas to toss your pet’s poopage
and in some areas, there are also bags. Carry your own grocery bags
- you’ll be recycling at the same time! Many of your neighbors work
hard with their lawncare and landscaping. Come with a scooper and
a recycled grocery bag or anything else. Picking up after your pets
shows your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.
Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard
to maintaining their grass!
STOP THAT BARKING!
Dogs left alone all day get bored and restless and many find relief in
barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. But, nothing
is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog
is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement
ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will
thank you!
Training. Always the first recommendation
for any behavioral problem! Help is
as close as the Yellow Pages. Training not
only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised
how much it helps you, too. You may get
some insight into why your dog barks so
much or what it is trying to communicate.
Citronella collars. A humane alternative
to the electric-shock, anti-barking collar
and costs about the same. Available on
the web and in pet stores.
Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing
an outspoken dog indoors or confining
it to a crate can cut down on the
disturbance to neighbors.
Reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help
muffle street noise or leave a radio on
to mask it. Disconnect telephones and
doorbells before leaving your home if
they upset your dog or make it bark.
Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship—a
cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a
pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a
day-care facility once or twice a week.
Doggy Door. Dogs left loose inside the home that have access to a
doggy door can go outside and bark constantly without the owner
knowing they went outside. Consider locking the door when away
from home.

HOUSTON WING - COMMEMORATIVE AIR FORCE
2017 OPEN HOUSE & VINTAGE AIRCRAFT FLY-IN
April 22-23, 2017 will be a weekend dedicated in recognition of
the 70 th anniversary the formation of the United States Air Force,
as the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Houston Wing presents
its annual Open House at the West Houston Airport. This event
provides a rare opportunity for the public of all ages to immerse
themselves in the sights and sounds of WWII and other authentic
vintage military aircraft, which played a huge role in our American
history.
In addition to aircraft, several historic military vehicles will be on
display as well as a very unique anti-aircraft gun trailer exhibit
from the Battleship Texas. Our hangar’s WWII museum will also
be open and docents will be available to help all ages enjoy the
museum’s
displays.

NATURE PROGRAMS FOR PRESCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN
SATURDAYS IN NATURE
This program is held on the second Saturday of each month at the
Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary. Arrive anytime between 9 and 11:30
AM. The program ends at 12 noon. A guided nature walk will begin at
10 AM. No reservations required. Donations are encouraged. This is
a “whole family” program; parents or other adult guardians should
participate with their children. Upcoming programs include March
program on Wildflower Walk(Cone Seed Starter).
THE TITMOUSE CLUB
The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5
sponsored by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. The program is
offered every Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 10 to 11 AM, from
mid-September until mid-May at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary,
440 Wilchester Boulevard. Each week features a different nature theme

BIRDING

There are many different levels of bird watching from the casual observer
to professionals whose goal is to see as many of the 8,850 species as
possible. In North America there are approximately 800 species. Some
people use nothing more than the naked eye to observe and others
spend thousands of dollars on binoculars, telescopes, cameras, video
and audio equipment, tripods and field guides. “Birding” as it’s sometimes
called, is also a competitive event and there are both national
and international organizations.
Some of the best bird watching, perhaps in the world, is in the Houston
area. Approximately 570 types of birds either call this area home and
are permanent residents or are migratory and just pass through on their
way to some other destination.
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is a great resource for anyone interested
in birds. If you ever have a problem identifying a bird, their free Merlin
Bird ID app is a must-have. According to Cornell, “If you can snap a bird
photo with your phone - or even take a photo of another photo - chances
are Merlin can help you ID it.”
Birds face the same threat as almost all other wild animals and that is
habitat loss. Trees, brush and grasslands are being destroyed to make
way for roads and buildings. The best way to help our feathered friends
is to replace some of what has been lost. Plant trees and shrubs using
native plants, minimize pesticide use, set up nest boxes, provide water
and keep your cats indoors. Leave some dying and/or dead trees on your
property. Many species depend on cavities in these trees for nest sites.
Next to habitat loss, the next highest cause of bird deaths is collisions
with windows. Covering windows with screening or applying decals or
tape to windows can help significantly. Make sure to check the web for
instructions on how to apply these safeguards.

of an Athletic Hall of Honor to recognize
the efforts and contributions of former
student athletes, athletic teams, coaches and
special merit individuals who have brought
distinction, honor and excellence to themselves
and to the District.
Nominations are now being accepted
through March 15, 2017. Submissions will
be reviewed by the Katy ISD Athletic Hall of
Honor Honorary Board and voted on by the
Katy ISD Athletic Hall of Honor Committee.
Once submitted, a nominee’s application will
remain active for five years with the Honorary
Board. Due to the sheer volume of alumni
worthy of such an honor, nominations will
be accepted annually.
The Hall of Honor Committee has already selected
the following four state championship
teams to be honored in the inaugural class of
the Athletic Hall of Honor:

KATY ISD ANNOUNCES NEW CAMPUS
ATHLETIC COORDINATORS FOR
MORTON RANCH
Katy ISD is pleased to announce the addition
of Ron Counter and B.J. William Gotte as
our new Campus Athletic Coordinator/Head
Football Coach’s for Morton Ranch High
School and Paetow High School.
Both positions were approved unanimously
during the Katy ISD Board of Trustees January
Work Study meeting.
Coach Counter comes to Morton Ranch High
from Stafford High where he was the head
football coach and athletic director for the
last four years. During his time at Stafford,
Coach Counter led the program into the
playoffs four years in a row. Prior to Stafford,
Coach Counter made coaching stops
at Strake Jesuit High, Round Rock Westwood
High, Spring Woods High, Alief Hastings High
and Klein Oak High. Coach Counter has also
received several “Coach of the Year” honors.
For Coach Gotte, moving to Paetow High
School means staying close to home. Growing
up he attended Cimarron Elementary,
West Memorial Junior High and graduated
“class of ‘97” at Katy High School, which
is where he also began his career in 2001.
Coach Gotte made stops at Deer Park High,
La Marque High and Flower Mound Marcus
High prior to returning to Katy High in 2009.
His role as an Offensive Coordinator at Katy
High School has played an integral part in
winning three state championships.
The Katy ISD Athletic Department is excited to
welcome both coaches to these new endeavors
within the Katy ISD family. Both coaches
began their new journey on February 1 st .

March is National Nutrition Month and the 2017 National Nutrition
Month theme is “Put Your Best Fork Forward.” Below are 17 Food,
Nutrition and Health Tips from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Dedicate yourself to a healthy lifestyle in 2017 with these food,
nutrition and physical activity tips.
Eat Breakfast
Start your morning with a healthy breakfast that includes lean
protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Try making a breakfast
burrito with scrambled eggs, low-fat cheese, salsa and a whole
wheat tortilla or a parfait with low-fat plain yogurt, fruit and whole
grain cereal.
Make Half Your Plate Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and veggies add color, flavor and texture plus vitamins, minerals
and fiber to your plate. Make 2 cups of fruit and 2 ½ cups of
vegetables your daily goal. Experiment with different types, including
fresh, frozen and canned.
Watch Portion Sizes
Get out the measuring cups and see how close your portions are
to the recommended serving size. Use half your plate for fruits and
vegetables and the other half for grains and lean protein foods. To
complete the meal, add a serving of fat-free or low-fat milk or yogurt.
Be Active
Regular physical activity has so many health benefits. Start by doing
what exercise you can for at least 10 minutes at a time. Children and
teens should get 60 or more minutes of physical activity per day and
adults should get two hours and 30 minutes per week. You don’t have
to hit the gym - take a walk after dinner or play a game of catch or
basketball.
Fix Healthy Snacks
Healthy snacks can sustain your energy levels between meals, especially
when they include a combination of foods. Choose from two or
more of the MyPlate food groups: grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy and
protein. Try raw veggies with low-fat cottage cheese, or a tablespoon
of peanut butter with an apple or banana.
Enact Family Meal Time
Plan to eat as a family at least a few times each week. Set a regular
mealtime. Turn off the TV, phones and other electronic devices to
encourage mealtime talk. Get kids involved in meal planning and
cooking and use this time to teach them about good nutrition.
Banish Brown Bag Boredom
Whether it’s a lunch for work or school, prevent brown bag boredom
with easy-to-fix, healthy lunch ideas. Try a whole-wheat pita pocket
with veggies and hummus or a low sodium vegetable soup with whole
grain crackers or a salad of mixed greens with low-fat dressing and
a hard boiled egg.
Drink More Water
Quench your thirst by drinking water instead of sugary drinks. Stay
well hydrated by drinking plenty of water if you are active, live or
work in hot conditions or are an older adult.
Explore New Foods and Flavors
Add more nutrition and eating pleasure by expanding your range of
food choices. When shopping, make a point of selecting a fruit, vegetable
or whole grain that’s new to you or your family. Try different
versions of familiar foods like purple asparagus, Honeycrisp apples,
broccoli or quinoa.
Eat Seafood Twice a Week
Seafood - fish and shellfish - contains a range of nutrients including
healthy omega-3 fats. Salmon, trout, oysters and sardines are higher
in omega-3s and lower in mercury.
Cut Back on Added Sugars
Foods and drinks with added sugars can contribute empty calories
and little or no nutrition. Reviewing ingredients on the food label
can help you identify sources of added sugar.

Experiment with more plant-based meals
Expand the variety in your menus with budget friendly meatless
meals. Many recipes that use meat and poultry can be made without.
Eating a variety of plant foods can help. Vegetables, beans and

BANANA CREAM PIE MADE EASY
You could make this on National Banana Cream Pie Day March 2 nd !
INGREDIENTS:
3 cups heavy cream
1/2 cup crushed ice
1 (3.5 ounce) package instant banana pudding mix
1 (3.4 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix
3 bananas, sliced
1 (9 inch) pie shell, baked
1 cup heavy cream
DIRECTIONS:
Using an electric mixer, whip 3 cups heavy cream on low speed until it starts to thicken. Add
crushed ice and continue to whip another 4 minutes. Increase speed and add vanilla and
banana pudding mixes, whipping until pudding mixes are blended fully with the cream and
the mixture thickens. Increase speed to high and beat until mixture is stiff.
Line the bottom and half way up the sides of pie crust with banana slices.
Cover bananas with half of the banana cream mixture and top completely
with banana slices. Top with the remaining banana cream mixture. In a
small bowl, whip 1 cup cream until stiff peaks form. Using a pastry bag,
pipe cream onto top of pie, covering completely. Refrigerate 1 hour before

HONEY CHICKEN KABOBS
You could make this on National Something on a Stick Day March 28 th !
INGREDIENTS:
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/3 cup honey
1/3 cup soy sauce
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
8 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cut into 1 inch cubes
2 cloves garlic
5 small onions, cut into 2 inch pieces
2 red bell peppers, cut into 2 inch pieces
skewers
DIRECTIONS:
In a large bowl, whisk together oil, honey, soy sauce and pepper. Before adding chicken,
reserve a small amount of marinade to brush onto kabobs while cooking. Place the chicken,
garlic, onions and peppers in the bowl and marinate in the refrigerator at least 2 hours (the
longer the better).
Preheat the grill for high heat. Drain marinade from the chicken and vegetables and discard
marinade. Thread chicken and vegetables alternately onto the skewers. Lightly oil the grill
grate. Place the skewers on the grill. Cook for 12 to 15 minutes, until chicken juices run clear.
