From the Vicarage
March 2017
March is here and with it comes Lent and time for us to
prepare for the great festival of Easter. Lent has rather faded
from our experience compared with the old days when
penitence and fasting were simply a part of peoples lives.
Even in the church most of us nod in the direction of Lent
rather then give it our full commitment – the language of
sackcloth and ashes makes us a bit embarrassed perhaps, in
the wider secular world it has become a sort of comic trope –
“woe, woe and thrice woe” – or worse, is seen as something
slightly sinister and unhealthy. What those miss and what we
sometimes forget, is that it is not self denial simply for its own
sake but a way of us preparing ourselves properly for what
lies ahead. Here our preparation is both corporate, by
attending, if you can, the Wednesday evening services at
seven and individual – through filling Smartie tubes with 20p
pieces. Pray more, give more and make a sacrifice of some
kind (whiskey for me again and a promise to try to do better
than I did last year) are the themes of the season
What lies ahead is Easter the Great Feast when woe is turned
to joy, light to darkness and us to heaven. That’s something
worth preparing for.
Yours in Christ
Fr Richard
Choir visit to
Peterborough
Congratulations to all the choir of
St Mary’s Church for singing choral
evensong so well as the Visiting Choir
at Peterborough Cathedral on
Saturday 11th February.
The choir received a warm welcome
from everyone at the Cathedral. There
were many positive comments about
the service and the choir have been
invited to sing choral evensong there
again in February 2018.
Confirmation
This year we are invited on Holy
Saturday (15th April at 8.00 pm)
to the cathedral for the Easter Vigil,
the service we normally hold in
St Mary’s Church on the evening
before Easter Day.
To join, instead, the bishops and the
community there for this most solemn
liturgy this year would be, I think, not
only a splendid opportunity to
participate in the cathedral's
celebration of Easter but also to
confirm candidates, a tradition which
goes right back to the earliest days of
the church.
There are two candidates so far who
would like to do this.
If you would like to get confirmed, or
know of anyone who would like to get
confirmed, please contact Fr Richard,
and he will make the necessary
arrangements for instruction before
the day.
Women’s World Day of
Prayer
Churches Working Together.
This year we are off to the Philippines
a country with a population of over
100 million. We will learn about life in
the Philippines, sing a number of
hymns and say a few prayers. On 8th
November, 2013 a typhoon swept
through the Philippines causing
devastation. Over 6,000 people died,
2,000 are still reported as missing
7
7
and thousands lost their homes. We
listen to these and other stories of
hardship and find out how the people
have coped with their adversities and
losses.
Join us this year at the Wesleyan
Chapel at 2.00 pm on Friday 3rd
March 2017.
Some facts about the
Philippines
The population of the Philippines is
100 million with a very mixed
ethnicity.
Their flag is flown in two different
ways. In times of peace it is flown
with the blue side on top and in times
of war the red is flown on top.
The country was named Philippines
after King Philip the 2nd of Spain.
The country became independent in
1946. Filipinos send more text
messages than any other country in
the world.
They only have two seasons, the
rainy season and the summer. It can
rain for 2 weeks nonstop in the rainy
season.
Their staple food is rice eaten for
breakfast, dinner and tea.
They speak 175 different languages
and dialects. The country is made up
of 7000 islands with many volcanoes
that erupt.
Water buffaloes are the national
animal and are used in many places
where there are no tractors. The
Philippines experience many
typhoons that cause massive
damage.
Many houses are built of strong
bamboo and on stilts.

In My Day
the ramblings of Hubert James
In my day it was about this time of
year that you had to watch out for a
cold snap. A frosty morning could
catch you out not to mention
surprising the wild life.
But I’ll mention them anyway
because when the Sparrows, Tits
and Robins found their regular
water supply frozen, they’d turn to
the milk bottles on your step.
Course, in my day, milk came in
bottles and was delivered early
each morning by someone we liked
to call the milkman.
And once he’d dropped off your two
pints (pints weren’t just for beer in
my day) your bottles were
unattended and so easy pickings
for the birds. Nobody knows which
bird first came up with the idea of
pecking through the foil bottle lid to
get at the cream, but once they
made the discovery, there was no
stopping them.
Course, it led to a small moral
dilemma.
When you opened the front door
and found the top inch of milk
missing, you’d be annoyed
because that was the thick creamy
bit that went on your cornflakes.
11
11
But when you thought about it, you
didn’t want to begrudge the poor
bird its sustenance.
Mind you, if you wanted to stay at
the top of the food chain, you knew
you had to stop the birds pilfering.
Now for years we had a milkman
called Jock McCurd he drove his
milk float from the dairy in Gold
Street (which is where the term; top
of Gold Street milk, or Gold Top,
came from) . If you ever got stuck
behind Jock when he was going
home and you were going to work,
you’d curse electric vehicles. Jock
reckoned that one summer he read
War and Peace between Finedon
and the Dairy.
He was a bit special, very well
educated. He did some story
writing on the side and it was him
that came up with the idea of little
plastic caps to cover the bottle tops
and make them bird proof.
Old Jock kept delivering milk way
after the supermarkets took over.
He reckoned he’d been a Milky all
his life and they’d have to carry him
off in a milk crate.
He started up in Scotland with a
horse and cart. For years he
worked around Aberdeen and was
milkman by Royal Appointment up
there.
He managed to keep working even
though his business was making a
loss because he had income from
his autobiography, the best seller;
‘Dairy of a Nobody’ and from a
pension paid to him by the Royal
Family. He reckoned he was living
off Balmoral earnings.

Not to be served, but to serve
T
he first day of March: St David's
Day, when the Welsh celebrate
their great patron saint. A
teaching, preaching, doctrinally
orthodox, church-planting bishop.
Three cheers! (And he was Welsh.)
This year the first day of March is
also Ash Wednesday, the first day of
Lent. As I have written before, and
almost certainly will do again, I am a
strong believer in the Christian Year.
It serves us well as a teaching tool, as
a liturgical framework, and as an aid
to the disciplines of our discipleship.
Lent matters.
I gave up coffee one Lent: a
memorable but painful experience,
which taught me to my horror that I
was addicted to caffeine. In my mid
teens I once succeeded in giving up
sweets right through Lent - for me at
that time a remarkable achievement:
at least, I thought so at the time. But
what I actually did was put the sweets
I would have eaten into a drawer.
Once Easter came, the sweets went
quite quickly. Maybe that was an act
of self-discipline. But it wasn't a
sacrifice; merely deferred gratification.
In retrospect, it boosted my ego rather
than my spiritual growth.
Lent can and should be a time to get
our spiritual disciplines on track:
giving, prayer, and fasting (in that
order) are the great three in the
Sermon on the Mount. All three are
examples of self-denial, indicators
that we are trusting in and relying on
God rather than ourselves. But when
you get into them in depth, they are
more about serving others than
growing ourselves. The danger of
the Lenten disciplines is that we
can be too introspective. Like
Jesus, we are here not to be
served, but to serve.
Have a good Lent, as we walk the
way of the cross together. May
your Lent, and mine, be an
opportunity to give ourselves in
service to our lord, and to one
another.
With Lenten blessings
Church of England launches new educational foundation
T
he Church of England
Foundation for Educational
Leadership will provide
leadership development training for
those holding key roles in education,
and is a major intervention by the
Church in the education sector.
In advance of the launch, it has
announced the names of the four
trustees of the new charity:

Professor Joy Carter DL (Chair);
Vice-Chancellor of Winchester University

The Revd Nigel Genders; Chief
Education Officer for the Church of
England

The Rt Revd Rachel Treweek;
Bishop of Gloucester

Professor Bill Lucas; Acclaimed
researcher and writer about education
and learning
Speaking about the new trustees
the Foundation’s Director, James
Townsend, said: “We are thrilled that
the work of the Foundation for
Educational Leadership will be
supported by an experienced and
visionary Board of Trustees, reflecting
a powerful partnership between
dioceses, universities and school
leaders.
“I am looking forward to working with
Joy, Nigel, Bishop Rachel and Bill as
we seek to ensure that all leaders in
education have access to the very
highest quality leadership
development – especially those
serving pupils in rural and
disadvantaged areas.”
The Chair of Trustees, Professor
Joy Carter, said: “The next few years
will be an important time for our
education system as we equip a new
generation of young people to shape
the values and priorities of our
society, and contribute meaningfully to
a complex and globalised world.
“To do this, we need to ensure our
leaders in schools, Multi-Academy
Trusts and diocesan education teams
are fully supported in their
development. The Board is committed
to ensuring the success of the
Foundation for Educational
Leadership in doing so.”
Further trustees will be recruited to
the Foundation in due course.
Come to the Bishop’s Bible Day on 18 March
T
his year the theme is The
Old Testament for the
church and the world
today.
The day is for anyone who uses
the Bible; in their ministry, in
church, in school, at work, in the
community and at home.
There are two talks from
Bishop Donald, and a choice of
two workshops during the day.
For a list of workshops or to
book, ring 01604 887049 or
email: bookings@peterboroughdiocese.org.uk
More information can be found at:
http://www.peterboroughdiocese.org.uk/discipleship/-3.
The Bible day is free of charge but
F
ollowing on from the very popular
series of Roadshows in 2014,
Bishop Donald would like to
invite you to the 2017
Roadshows.
Bishop Donald said:
“I believe that God cares
passionately about his
church and that he wants
it to be alive and joyful; to
grow and flourish. The
purpose of the
Roadshows is to share
with the whole diocese
this vision for God’s
church in order to
encourage and invigorate
the parishes throughout
the diocese.
During these Roadshows I will be
talking about many aspects of what it
means to be alive to God as Anglicans
in this part of the world. We will be
considering the training and cost of
ministry - both lay and ordained. We
Bishop’s Roadshows 2017
14
donations are very much appreciated
from those who feel able to contribute
towards the costs.
will be thinking about the place of
schools in our parishes and other
ways of how we can support your
parishes to thrive and grow.
I very much hope that
clergy, licensed lay ministers,
churchwardens, and PCC
treasurers, will come to these
Roadshows, but the invitation
is open to all PCC members,
and indeed to all
churchgoers. Please spread
the word as widely as
possible, and come join me
one Saturday morning.
There are two more
Roadshows: April 29 and
May 6.
Please contact
Suzanne.carter@peterboroughdiocese.org.uk
to choose an event
date and to give numbers of those
attending.
