ROOM forZOOM GAUGE YOUR USAGE BY BANDWIDTH, NOT THE TIME YOU SPEND ONLINE iPods, home networks, laptops, streaming HD, iPads, online gaming and everyday video blogs…just to name a few of the ways you use the internet. It seems like the whole world could use a little more “zoom” when it comes to all of the different online uses and devices that have become crucial to our everyday existence. Essentially, most users can be placed into three groups: moderate, average and power. MOdERAtE: While they may spend hours online, they engage in fairly light bandwidth activities. AVERAGE: These users routinely engage in online gaming, uploading or downloading large files or some streaming video and music. MODERATE USERS Robin and Zach are moderate online consumers because they tend to use the internet only for some basic web browsing and gathering information central to their lives. While they own a number of internetenabled devices in their home, they rarely use them simultaneously. They may catch a game on ESPN3, but otherwise stream little video into their home. “Zach got into watching Band of Brothers, but that has really been it,” said Robin. POWER USERS On the power end of the bandwidth spectrum is the Kennedy family. With four children, two of whom are teenagers, and an appetite for information, socializing and fun, the family can literally access it’s connection with six devices simultaneously. Aaron, the dad, does workrelated activity that may involve moving large amounts of data. The teen girls do a lot of Skyping as well as posting video messages on Facebook and downloading music. The younger kids play quite a few online games as well as tracking their favorite sports teams while the mom, Karen, focuses on shopping, photo file sharing and email. With ten online devices in the house, it’s not uncommon for all six family members to be connected at the same time. AVERAGE USERS The Albright family is an average-use household. With two young daughters, they stream movies or children’s programming about five times a week and catch kid classics on YouTube or Hulu. Chip, the dad, mostly uses the internet to follow his fantasy teams or favorite sports teams. His wife, Jen, is a work-at-home graphic designer and uses the internet to transport relatively large files. Both parents catch up on social media at night, primarily Facebook and Twitter, as well as surfing the web for information and entertainment. With two laptops, a Wii and two smartphones in the home, they may be poised to move into a heavier use category as their daughters grow.
