Beach DReaMS The steamy setting of Miami has long been a popular stage for TV drama. Miami Vice. CSI Miami. Dexter. STARZ adds a twist to this venerable city by turning the clock back 50 years to when ties were narrow, minds were narrower and Miami was still the preferred playground of the rich and notorious. The series, premiering April 6, paints a rich portrait of a turbulent city at a pivotal time in history – with plenty of danger and intrigue mixed in. It’s Mad Men meeting Goodfellas – on the beach. As Miami prepares for New Year’s Eve 1958, the program immerses the audience in the luxury and mystique of the Miramar Playa, a beach hotel built, owned and operated by Ike Evans (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Shot on location in Miami, with approximately 200,000 square feet of studio space for replica ballrooms, lounges and cabanas, the imagery of Magic City transports the viewer to a time of mystique and power. hotel resort. The Butcher, a composite of real life organized crime figures that include Bugsy Siegal and Meyer Lansky, is the epitome of ruthlessness – gracious one moment and violent the next. The primary focus of Magic City is the Evans family, all of whom live in the hotel. Older son Stevie (Steven Strait) is Ike’s right hand, managing the hotel’s lounge and arranging special favors for guests. Younger son Danny (Christian Cooke) is the opposite of his older brother and a law student interested in being a district attorney. Daughter Lauren (Taylor Blackwell), just entering her teen years, is torn between memories of her deceased mother and the earnestness of her step mother, Vera (Olga Kurylenko), a former dancer in a Havana hotel/resort. The richness of the characters and south Florida setting allow Magic City to move slowly in time. The 8-episode first season spans just six months but it’s unlikely any viewer will grow impatient with the show’s pace because of the detailed authenticity of the characters and settings – with plenty more to come. “It would be great to get to 1961 and the Bay of Pigs,” said Glazer. “In that timeframe, the two fastest growing populations were the displaced Cuban community and the C.I.A., a fascinating time in American history.” Without a doubt, if the storyline progresses that far in subsequent seasons, Glazer’s ability to recall the city of his youth could result in a fascinating perspective. Although Magic City is set in a time more than half a century in the past, its themes of family, loyalty and greed enable it to be a contemporary drama as well.
